Most teachers' side hustles involve pursuits like flipping items online, providing a service like tutoring, or starting their own hot sauce brand.
Dr. Robert Stinson's side hustle involves getting hit in the face with chairs, being choke slammed through tables, and calling Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins his second boss.
In this episode, Robert talks about the ins and outs of being a good guy at school and a bad guy in the ring, the importance of work-life balance, and why so many professional wrestlers have had second lives as teachers.

Most side hustlers are looking for ways to grow their impact on social media...we want more followers, more likes, more shares - and ultimately more paying customers.
However, the majority of us are using social media all wrong. We treat it like a billboard instead of a conversation. We have taken the social out of social media.
In this episode, Drew Small, owner of BRDDG, a digital marketing agency based in Nashville, Tennessee, shares organic social media growth strategies that he has used to help clients gain almost 2 million followers and over 100 million impressions in 2023 alone.
The interview is taken from a previous discussion that I had with Drew for my other podcast, The Book Your Band Podcast and has been edited (with Drew's permission) to share on After School Empire. Although the original context of our discussion was how musicians can grow their following online, the strategies discussed also apply to teacher hustlers who want to grow their reach on social media.

Most teachers start side hustles because they want to supplement their income to either relieve stress over bills that are piling up, pay for their kids' extracurriculars, save for vacation, or even to fund hobbies they feel guilty paying for out of their paychecks.
Others, however, launch side hustles as part of an exit strategy. Due to a variety of factors, we know that there's been a mass exodus of teachers leaving the career over the last few years. And today's guest is one who deuced out of the classroom after being pushed to the brink by some really toxic administrators.
After seven years in the classroom, Liz Langs decided to take her tutoring side hustle and scale it into a full-time business.
On today's episode blitz shares her story and talks the ins and outs of growing a side hustle into a second career.

If I could describe researching a Disney vacation in one word, it would be "overwhelming."
Where resort should I book? Is a meal plan worth it? Which character dinner is best? Park hopping, After Hours events...and on and on and on.
Today's guest grew up going to Disney World and decided to combine her love for traveling and her extensive knowledge of the "house that Walt built" to launch a money making side hustle as a travel professional. More than a "travel agent", Hannah Sosebee views herself as a consultant, who offers advice, support, and expertise to minimize the stress that is a vacation at one of Orlando's famous theme parks (e.g., Disney and Universal).
In this episode, Hannah gives a peak into her world as a travel professional and shares how she balances her responsibilities between her job as an academic coach and her side hustle.

Unlocking Your Side Hustle Potential
In this episode, Tony dives into five critical questions to help you pinpoint the perfect side hustle:
What am I good at that others aren't?
Reflect on your unique talents and skills. Whether you're an organizational guru, tech-savvy, a baking pro, or have a knack for photography, identifying what you excel at is the first step toward leveraging those abilities for extra income.
What gaps can I fill?
Look around your community and listen to the needs and frustrations of people. Are there services lacking or products that are hard to find? For example, Tony discusses how noticing a demand for gentle cleaning for historic homes led him to start a profitable exterior cleaning business.
How can I improve existing products or services?
Consider what's already out there and how you can enhance it. Tony shares his own experience of developing a beard care line that catered to sensitive skin, which turned into a successful venture due to its unique value proposition.
What am I passionate about?
Turning your passions into a side hustle not only makes the work enjoyable but can also be incredibly fulfilling. Whether it's music, art, or any other interest, think about how you can monetize these passions.
What unique opportunities do I have access to?
Sometimes, the best opportunities are those that are unexpectedly available only to you. Tony recounts a story of how he capitalized on buying and flipping a collection from an estate sale, turning a modest investment into a significant profit.

Welcome to the very first episode of "After School Empire," where we're all about helping teachers, like you, make extra money after school by launching and growing their own income generating side hustles.
In this episode, we're diving deep into why having a side hustle isn't just a nice-to-have, but a must-have for teachers today. We're drawing inspiration from the hard-hitting 2018 Time Magazine series "I am a teacher in America," which brought to light the tough financial realities many educators face.
Introduction to Side Hustles
We start off by looking at the real-life struggles of teachers who are juggling multiple jobs, barely scraping by, and still not making enough. It's clear that something's got to give. That's where side hustles come in. Chris Guillebeau, a huge advocate for side hustles, says that everyone needs a secondary income stream, and we couldn't agree more—especially for teachers. Side hustles offer a fantastic way to use your talents and passions to pad your wallet and enrich your life outside the classroom.
What is a Side Hustle?
So, what exactly is a side hustle? It's anything you do alongside your main teaching gig to earn extra cash. But here's the cool part: unlike typical part-time jobs, side hustles give you the freedom to choose your projects, set your own schedule, and work as much or as little as you want. This flexibility is perfect for fitting into the busy life of a teacher.
Exploring Types of Side Hustles
Next, we break down six types of side hustles that are perfect for teachers:
Gig Economy: Think Uber or DoorDash. These can offer quick cash, but they often require more time than they might be worth.
Multi-Level Marketing (MLM): We discuss why these are usually not the best choice, mainly because they rely heavily on recruiting others and selling products, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea...also calling a spade a spade, they're mostly just pyramid schemes.
Passive Income: This category includes options like renting out property or investing in stocks. While 'passive' might suggest it's effortless, it typically requires upfront work and maintenance.
Ads-Based Ventures: From blogging to podcasting, these hustles can generate income through ads or sponsorships if you have the right audience.
Goods-Based Hustles: Whether it's selling crafts online or flipping items on eBay, this is all about monetizing physical or digital products.
Service-Based Hustles: Here's where many teachers shine, by offering tutoring, consulting, or even coaching services.
Empowering Teachers
This whole side hustle business isn’t just about extra cash; it’s about empowering you to take your skills and make them work for you in new and exciting ways. It's about crafting a life where you have more freedom and control, something every teacher deserves.
Looking Ahead
As we wrap up, we tease our next episode, which will be all about helping you figure out which side hustle might be the best fit for you. If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the possibilities or just unsure where to start, you won’t want to miss it!
