Description

On Whatever Comes Next I explore the world of independent and underground music making. I talk with music makers, producers and label owners to hear their stories. I like music with a sense of mystery. I like surprises and unique stories... and noise... and weirdness... and darkness... and I want to learn more.

Episode 101: Yowie

2025-10-0350:08

What is Yowie? The simple answer is that they’re an instrumental three-piece of drums and two guitars. Once you start trying to describe the music however, this is where the fun starts. My characterisation of listening to Taking Umbrage (the band’s new album, out today on SKiN GRAFT Records) is that it’s like the world has turned into Play-Doh and it’s swirling in a whirlpool that’s being fed through a meat grinder. Perhaps it’s best we turn to drummer and founding member Shawn “Defenestrator” guitarist Daniel “The Quidnunk” (who alongside guitarist Jack “Oakie Doke” currently complete the lineup) for a more sensible explanation of the band’s sound, how they construct their music and how the Yowie sound has evolved over the years. Oh, well how about that! Shawn and Daniel are right here to do just that, so let’s find out what they have to say. We also discuss the gorgeous artwork of Taking Umbrage, created by Arnulf Roedler, with the album available to buy right now from the link below. Taking Umbrage on bandcamp Yowie on facebook Yowie on Instagram Catch Yowie on tour in Europe: Wed.22.10.25 BE BRUSSELS - Magasin 4 Thu.23.10.25 FR - LILLE Centre Culturel Libertaire Fri.24.10.25 UK LONDON - Strongroom Sat.25.10.25 FR AMIENS - Accueil froid Sun.26.10.25 FR PARIS La cantine de Belleville Mon.27.10.25 OFF Tue.28.10.25 DK COPENHAGEN - Rahuset Wed.29.10.25 DE HAMBURG - Hafenklang Thu.30.10.25 DE BERLIN - K19 Fri.31.10.25 PL GDANSK - Klub Zak Sat.1.11.25 PL WOLOW - Nowa Forma Club Sun.2.11.25 CZ PRAGUE - Cafe V Lese Mon.3.11.25 CZ České Budějovice - Žižkárna Tue.4.11.25 OFF Wed.5.11.25 CH GENEVE - La Cave Thu.6.11.25 FR LYON - Les Capucins Fri.7.11.25 FR BESANCON - Les Passagers Du Zinc Sat.8.11.25 BE KORTRIJK - Sonic City FestivalSupport the show and get bonus content at Patreon Check out my latest album Real Silence on Drama Recorder Podcast artwork and logo: https://www.garjk.com/ Intro music: “Detachment” by Tom Osman This is a public episode. For episode 100 of Whatever Comes Next I wanted to do something special and thanks to Dave Brenner at Earsplit PR I was able to put this multi-interview episode discussion of DIY music together. My guests have decades of experience in the musical underground in pretty much any dimension of getting music out there you can imagine.I talk in turn with Dave Brenner (Earsplit PR/ Gridfailure), Greg Meisenberg (Nefarious Industries / A F*****g Elephant), Steve Austin (Today Is The Day / Supernova Records), Urlo, Lu & Poia (Malleus / Supernatural Cat / Ufomammut), Dan Emery (Black Matter Mastering / Thetan) and Andreas Kohl (Exile On Mainstream Records). What does DIY mean to them? How is the landscape for people in the musical underground now? What can we expect in the future? Thanks to all my guests for taking part.Earsplit PRGridfailure (new album) Nefarious Industries Today Is The Day (new album) MalleusSupernatural Cat Black Matter MasteringExile On Mainstream Records To support the show and get bonus content sign up on Patreon Check out my latest album Real Silence on Drama Recorder Podcast artwork and logo: https://www.garjk.com/Intro music: “Detachment” by Tom Osman This is a public episode. Pain Magazine brings together the two musical worlds of industrial-techno duo Maelstrom & Louisahhh and post-hardcore three-piece Birds In Row. Violent God (out on the 3rd of October on Humus Records) is the musical child birthed of this dark union. As lyrically violent and menacing as the music is, Violent God has its moments of not exactly light, but a certain sonic respite that glimmers as shards amongst malevolent, industrial beats, jagged, icy guitars and electronic textures that by turns envelope the listener or sound the alarm. But for all the sonic intensity of the music, Louisa Pillot and Bart Balboa (two fifths of Pain Magazine) make for charming and eloquent guests, as we delve into the creation of Violent God, as well as dissecting the violence of capitalism and the struggles of independent artists navigating their way between the jaws of the machine.Cover photo: Mae Ferron Photo 2: Jodie RoszakCheck out Violent God on bandcampPain Magazine on Humus RecordsPain Magazine on InstagramCheck out my latest album Real Silence on Drama Recorder Podcast artwork and logo: https://www.garjk.com/Intro music: "Detachment" by Tom Osman This is a public episode. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Grigg has been involved in numerous musical projects over the past 20 years. Back in 2007 Chris started black-metal project Woe—first solo, before expanding to a full band. With Woe most recently releasing their fifth full-length, Legacies of Frailty, in 2023, Chris has also found time to feature as the drummer for death-metal group Glorious Depravity (the band soon to be releasing their second album, Death Never Sleeps, on Transcending Obscurity Records.)And if that's not enough, in recent times Chris applied his skills from his day job as a programmer to create the independent music platform Ampwall.Chris joins me to discuss some of the history of Woe, from its inception, through his experiences working with Candlelight and the long process of getting the rights back to his music. New York based artist and illustrator Caroline Harrison's work with underground and extreme bands and musicians goes back almost 15 years designing the logo and and various cover art for death metal group Pyrrhon, but her journey as a visual artist goes back much further than that. More recently (and including a decade working at the sadly now closed Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn) Caroline has created artwork for bands like Pig Destroyer, KEN mode and Chat Pile, applying her particular style blending together beauty and ugliness. We discuss Caroline's early artistic and musical inspirations, years of balancing other jobs with artistic creation, the pros and cons of social media, the Ampwall platform and how it provides visual artists like Caroline (as well as musicians) with an alternative to bandcamp... and we talk about artist and Lovely Little Girls singer Gregory Jacobsen (who first suggested this interview—thanks Gregory!) Photo by Ebru YildizSee Caroline's work (with links to Ampwall and social media pages) Check out my latest album Real Silence on Drama RecorderPodcast artwork and logo: https://www.garjk.com/ Intro music: "Detachment" by Tom Osman This is a public episode. In a musical career that's spanned decades, many projects, several solo releases and becoming a published author Blake Fleming first made a name for himself in the 90s as the teenage drummer for post-hardcore group Dazzling Killmen. Having built an enduring relationship with SKiN GRAFT Records, the band split in 1995. Now 30 years later, as a new iteration of Dazzling Killmen gets back together (original members Blake, Nick Sakes and new recruits Ben Greenberg and Evan Jagles), SKiN GRAFT Records is set to release the long-out-of-print Dazzling Killmen debut Dig Out The Switch (originally recorded by Steve Albini and remastered by Andris Balins and Blake Fleming). Blake joins me to discuss his musical origins, the early days of Dazzling Killmen, working with Steve Albini and Jeff Tweedy on Dig Out The Switch, his solo career, writing The Book of Rhythm and some of his other ongoing projects. Speed of Light (released this coming Friday) is the second album by psychedelic-pop-rock project The Silver Snails and a record a decade in the making. Recorded between Italy and Portland, Oregon, the record (like The Silver Snails itself) is tied to no one specific place—with the project's architect Lucas Ward having lived and drawn influences from all over the world. Lucas joins me to discuss the record, the involvement of his wife (and occasionally also their children) in The Silver Snails, their music videos, his history with Portland and Elliott Smith, various insights into the costs of making music, and Lucas' goal to open hearts through music. Guitarist, editor and writer Jon Fine came up in the US indie-rock movement of the 1980s, most notably with rock trio B***h Magnet. In his engrossing memoir of a decade ago Your Band Sucks, Jon gives an entertaining and insightful look at how the indie-rock landscape evolved over those years and his part in it.Having at times extracted himself from an underground, DIY music world that doesn't always give back what is put into it, Fine is back and as energised as ever with his current instrumental-rock three-piece We Contain Multitudes (including former B***h Magnet drummer Orestes Morfin, as well as bassist Simon Kobayashi).Back in June the band released their great, weaving, winding (and rocking) debut Minako, and I interviewed Jon for New Noise MagazineNow Jon graciously sits down to talk with me again as we dive into the world of DIY music in more depth.Last month I bit the bullet and said, "ok, I'm really working on this book about underground, DIY music" and this episode is probably the most in depth discussion I've had about the realities of DIY music making.Of course we also talk We Contain Multitudes, Minako and what the band has planned for the future.Listen to or purchase Minako from Expert Work RecordsFollow We Contain Multitudes on InstagramThanks to Dan at Discipline PR for setting up the original interviewPodcast artwork and logo: https://www.garjk.com/Intro music: "Detachment" by Tom Osman This is a public episode. New York City's in this house of mourning (ITHOM) represents the dark side of the project's mastermind Ben. Episode 89: The Fremonts

2025-07-2201:00:41

Stephanie Dodd and Justin Badger didn't always plan to form an indie-folk-cabaret duo, but life can lead us on all kinds of unexpected journeys. In the case of Dodd it took her from Fremont, Nebraska, while for Badger Fremont, California was the starting point. And so where The Fremonts took there name from becomes clear. Friday sees the re-issue of We Don't Live There and The Failure Cabaret, the duo's first two albums, partially rerecorded to improve on certain aspects that Dodd and Badger weren't satisfied with on the original recordings.Since the original release of their two albums, Dodd and Badger had also turned The Failure Cabaret into a stage show, emphasising the comic aspects of some of the marital trials and tribulations that inspired the songs on that album.Dodd and Badger join me to discuss how musicals, church, theatre and ska-punk form a part of their stories, the making (and remaking) of their albums, The Failure Cabaret show and exactly what they think about Boulder, Colorado.Photo: Eric LimonClosing track: "Ketamine Happy Hour"Visit The Fremonts for music, videos, news and linksCheck out my latest album Real Silence on Drama RecorderPodcast artwork and logo: https://www.garjk.com/Intro music: "Detachment" by Tom Osman This is a public episode. Pili Coït is at its core the musical duo (and couple) of Jessica Martin Maresco and Guilhem Meier. Almost immediately after meeting 19 years ago the pair started making music together. In 2017 with the creation of Pink Noise the musical entity of Pili Coït was born. Since then the duo have released Love Everywhere in 2021 and most recently a split EP with Yowie (both on SKiN GRAFT Records). For the latest release the pair have expanded to an eight-piece to become Pili Coït & Les Exocrines.Jessica and Guilhem join me to discuss music, life, love, travel and family.Closing track: "Min Neqba"Thanks to Mark at SKiN GRAFT RecordsFollow Pili Coït on facebookBuy their music on bandcampCheck out my latest album Real Silence on Drama RecorderPodcast artwork and logo: https://www.garjk.com/Intro music: "Detachment" by Tom Osman This is a public episode. If we are to follow official accounts, then Admission (released last week on SKiN GRAFT Records) is the 26th album by Chicago's Cheer-Accident. Word has it that the album may be the band's best ever. And while it would serve no one to get caught up in hyperbole, it is indeed a great album.Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Thymme Jones has been at the helm of the band since its inception in 1981. How much could really be covered in one hour? While 31 years is a mere blink of the eye for the universe, for a band it's a long gap between records. For Washington DC's Strange Boutique their 1994 record The Kindest Worlds was very much intended, at the time, to be their final farewell—with the various members all going on to separate projects. With the passing of guitarist Fred Smith in 2017 singer Monica Richards and bassist Steve Willett found themselves together again, remembering their compatriot and their time together as Strange Boutique. The seeds were sown for what would become Let The Lonely Heart Sing, out now on The Circle Music. Richards and Willett join me to discuss the return of the band, the record and some of their history, from early post-hardcore roots to playing with Killing Joke. Drummer and composer Charlie Werber made his name in the 2010s applying his distinctive drumming skills to underground, Chicago rock bands like Lovely Little Girls. More recently, a little state-hopping saw Charlie involved in other intriguing musical projects like CHIROMANCER (alongside composer, pianist and singer Evelyn Davis) and The Flying Luttenbachers. The newly-released Krater (mastered by Todd Rittmann) sees Charlie release music under his own name for the first time—the album a dichotomy, with one half purely the hypnotic, cyclical drumming of Charlie and the other featuring Daniel O'Sullivan (of Ulver, Miracle and many other projects). Charlie joins me to discuss the latest record and the unique story of where the impulse to create Krater arose.
