Study reveals whether women actually feel cold more than menIt's a stereotype universally acknowledged that a woman at room temperature must be in want of a coat. But is it a scientific truth? Sheer observations aside, very few controlled studies have investigated how male and female bodies withstand cold temperatures. A new study has surprised researchers at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), finding no sex difference in the perception of a cold room, and very few sex differences in our physiological response to it. During the trial, a group of 28 men and women spent five hours in a temperature-controlled room, wearing provided shirts, shorts or skirts, and socks. Each day, participants were physically monitored and surveyed on their comfortability as the temperature ranged between 17 ºC to 31 ºC. Contrary to what NIH researchers were expecting to find, women in the study had a slightly higher core body temperature in colder temperatures than men. There were no sex differences in glucose uptake, muscle electrical activity, skin temperature, or cold-induced thermogenesis. It seems that even though female participants were physically smaller than males, producing less body heat overall, their relatively higher body fat helped balance the scales. Based on their results, researchers at NIH say the female body's comfort zone for temperature bottoms out at roughly 22 °C – a degree lower than the average for male participants. This suggests that as temperatures drop, the female body doesn't have to expend energy for warmth as soon as the male body, giving women a more "arctic" thermal profile. But that sex difference, while it is significant, offers little advantage. As temperatures lower to 17 ºC, researchers found no sex differences in the onset of shivering or how comfortable or uncomfortable participants said they felt in the room. The study was published in PNAS.
How do some people run so fast? The science of speed explainedUsain Bolt, the world's fastest person, ran a 100-meter sprint at a speed of 23.35 miles per hour (37.57 kilometers per hour). That's mind-blowingly fast for a human. It's about the same speed as cruising in a car through your neighborhood or in a school zone. It might not seem that fast when you're in the car, but for a person? Few runners in the world can even come close. There are several reasons why some people can run very fast while others tend to run more slowly. Genetics – the traits you inherit from your parents – play a role, but so do your choices and experiences. One major factor that influences your ability to run fast is the structure of your body, including how your muscles work. The human body has more than 600 muscles that work together, allowing you to move in different directions and at various speeds. These muscles are made up of groups of fibers. There are two main types: fast twitch and slow twitch. Muscles have different mixes of these fiber types. For example, two muscles make up the calf: One is predominantly fast twitch – that's the gastrocnemius, used for sprinting and jumping. The other is mostly slow twitch – that's the soleus, used for walking and jogging. Fast-twitch muscle fibers are larger and help your body move quickly and generate significant force. Sprinters tend to have an abundance of fast-twitch muscle fibers. However, this muscle fiber type also tires quickly, which limits how long you can run at top speed to relatively short distances. Slow-twitch muscle fibers are smaller and help you run at slower speeds, but with greater endurance. Long-distance runners and competitive cyclists tend to have a lot of these muscles. How much you have of each type of muscle fiber – fast twitch and slow twitch – is mostly determined by your genes, so you'll have to work with what you're born with when it comes to muscle types. But exercises can help train those muscles. Physical ability isn't just about muscle. Your brain plays an important role, too. Your skeletal muscles are controlled by your brain – you think about your actions and then execute the movements. For example, you can control how long your stride is, how your arms move, how your feet hit the ground and even the techniques you use to breathe. You can teach your body to use the best running techniques. That includes proper posture, so your body is standing tall, and an economical stride, so your feet land below you rather than too far out in front, where they can slow you down. You can also improve your running form by using your whole body, with your arms pumping in opposition to the legs, running on your toes and maximizing the time spent in flight phase with both feet off the ground. Using proper running techniques helps the muscles create more force and work together, which helps you run faster.

The new policy is expected to ease pressure on the city in Northwest China to destock its housing inventories, said Zhang Hongwei, founder of Jingjian Consulting.

Who invented coffee? Each day, millions of people brew a cup of coffee in the morning to help get their day started. As with most things in history, from milk to vegetables, someone had to be the first to think of roasting beans for their caffeine kick. According to legend, it was a 9th-century Ethiopian goat-herder named Kaldi who may have done as much for the beverage as Starbucks. Allegedly, Kaldi observed his goats behaving erratically after eating the red berries from a nearby Coffea arabica tree. He tried some of them himself and was soon acting as hyper as his herd. He then brought a batch to a monastery, where their stimulating effects during long hours of prayer were cause for concern. Coffee, the men observed, must be the devil’s work. The religious leaders there threw the tree’s beans onto a fire to destroy them—but the pleasing aroma that resulted convinced them to give coffee a second chance. Much like with tea, they put the roasted beans into warm water and coffee (the beverage) was born. Despite the legend, it’s thought that the practice of chewing coffee beans as a stimulant was around for centuries before Kaldi's alleged discovery. People would grind them to mix with butter and animal fat to preserve and eat on long journeys—basically, a precursor to the energy bar. Similarly, enslaved Sudanese peoples are thought to have chewed on coffee beans to help them survive their difficult voyages on trade routes. The story of Kaldi is difficult to pin down. What we do know is that true historical accounts of coffee consumption didn't materialize until much later, when devout Sufi in Yemen were said to use the drink to remain vigilant during religious rituals. The cultivation and trade of the beans for the drink began in Arabic countries in the 14th century and spread throughout Egypt, Syria, and Turkey. It’s said not a single coffee plant existed outside of Arabia or Africa until the 1600s, when a pilgrim named Baba Budan brought them back to India. In 1616, Pieter van der Broeck smuggled some coffee out of Mocha, Yemen, and brought it back to Amsterdam. Soon, the Dutch and their colonies—most notably Sri Lanka and Java—took over the European trade, followed by the French in the Caribbean, the Spanish in Central America, and the Portuguese in Brazil. The drink eventually made its way to America via British colonizers who docked in New York City. Today, the average American spends about $2000 a year on coffee. And while Kaldi may not be a household name like Folgers, he still gets his due. The St. Louis-based Kaldi’s Coffee takes its name from the most energetic goat herder in history.

One person was arrested on allegations of assault with a deadly weapon. On April 15, USC announced that valedictorian Asna Tabassum, who had been opposed by pro-Israel groups, would not be delivering the commencement speech after she faced criticism for her pro-Palestinian views.USC said that "tradition must give way to safety", after Tabassum faced threats of an "alarming tenor"."Although this should have been a time of celebration for my family, friends, professors, and classmates, ******** and ******* voices have subjected me to a campaign of racist hatred because of my uncompromising belief in human rights for all," Tabassum, who is Muslim, said in a statement."This is a security decision," USC Provost Andrew T. Guzman said to the Los Angeles Times. "This is not about the identity of the speaker, it's not about the things the valedictorian has said in the past. We have to put as our top priority ensuring that the campus and community is safe."More than 530 arrests have been made in the last week across major US universities related to the protests, according to a Reuters tally.College officials are worried the ongoing protests could disrupt their plans for commencement ceremonies next month, as they have at USC. Some universities called in police to break up the demonstrations, resulting in scuffles and arrests, while others appeared content to wait out student protests as the semester draws to a close. The current wave of protests was inspired by events at Columbia University in New York, where police cleared an encampment and arrested more than 100 people last week, only for students to put up tents again, in an area where many are set to graduate in front of families in a few weeks.Columbia has said it plans to continue negotiations with protesters through early Friday."There is a heavy police presence. I'm sure when you entered the campus, you are aware of all of the security around here," Althea C., a 21-year-old environmental biology student at Columbia University in New York, told China Daily. "But our movement is very strong."Professors were spontaneously standing in front of students against police officers on Monday night, wearing gowns and hoods, holding signs saying "Hands off our students"."It's very difficult to have complicated conversations when you have 100 of your students being hauled off with zip ties around their wrists by the NYPD," Nara Milanich, a history professor at Barnard College of Columbia University, told China Daily. As the encampment took place on the lawn, a small group of pro-Israel students also demonstrated on the steps."I want everyone to live in security to not have to fear for their lives. I do not wish war to be anywhere," said a pro-Israel student who requested anonymity. "I personally want an end to this war, and that includes the ceasing of rockets flying in Israel from every direction."At Emerson College in Boston, 108 people were arrested at an alleyway encampment. Some students protesting the war are demanding schools cut financial ties to Israel and divest from certain companies that they say have enabled the conflict. Some Jewish students say the protests have veered into ****** and have made them afraid to walk around campus. The University of Texas at Austin campus was much calmer Thursday after 57 people were jailed and charged with criminal trespass a day earlier. University officials pulled back barricades and allowed demonstrators onto the main square beneath the school's iconic clock tower. At Emory University in Atlanta, local and state police swept in to dismantle a camp, although the university said the protesters weren't students but rather outside activists. Jail records showed 22 people arrested by Emory police were charged with disorderly conduct."Several dozen protesters trespassed into Emory University's campus early Thursday morning and set up tents," the school wrote in response to an emailed request for comment. On the campus of Princeton University in New Jersey, officers swarmed a newly formed encampment, video footage on social media showed. But many colleges, including Harvard University, were choosing not to take immediate action against protesters who had set up tents, even though they were openly defying campus rules. Some colleges were making new rules, like Northwestern University, which hastily changed its student code of conduct Thursday morning to bar tents on its suburban Chicago campus.George Washington University in Washington DC said it would move its law school finals from a building next to the protest encampment to a new location, because of noise."We continue to follow reports about protests — including very alarming reports of ******* — on and around college campuses across the country," US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement.Student protesters also have demanded that the US government rein in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, which Palestinian health authorities said have killed more than 34,000 people.Israel is retaliating against an Oct 7 attack by Hamas that killed 1,200 people and led to 253 taken hostage, according to Israeli numbers.

Some even replicated the song's lyrics while using the equipment. Many visitors said that the viral videos drew them to the area. Some visitors made special trips before leaving Chengdu, anxious to share their experience on social media and stay current with the trendy topic. However, the influx of young visitors perplexed the community's elderly residents. They found it unusual and annoying that so many people would line up to ride a see-saw machine. On April 5, according to a Jiupai News article, Nuomi appealed to his supporters on social media to be respectful and not disturb the residents. Survey finds generative AI proving major threat to the work of translatorsMore than a third of translators have lost work due to generative AI, a survey by the Society of Authors (SoA) has found. More than four in 10 translators said that their income has decreased because of generative AI, while more than three-quarters believe the emerging technology will negatively affect their future income. The SoA, the UK’s largest trade union for writers, illustrators and translators, ran the survey in January. It found that 37% of translators had used generative AI to support their work, and 8% used it because they were asked by their publisher or commissioning organisation. Thomas Bunstead, whose translations from Spanish include The Book of All Loves by Agustín Fernández Mallo, said it is important to draw a distinction between literary translators and “commercial” translators. “Though a third of translators have responded to the SoA survey saying they think they’ve lost work to AI already, literary translation remains in the hands of humans,” he said. “The work that has presumably been handed over to AI will be the kind of uncomplicated bread-and-butter stuff which doesn’t require so much nuance,” such as instruction manuals. "Idiomatic, knotty and complex writing,” is likely to remain with human translators, agrees Nichola Smalley, whose translations from Swedish and Norwegian include A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding by Amanda Svensson. “But perhaps the people translating crime and romance novels who are currently getting less work due to AI will all start getting into the complex stuff and we’ll all be fighting for space in that niche. I hope not!” Ian Giles, the co-chair of the Translators Association whose translations from Scandinavian languages into English include the forthcoming The Cuckoo by Camilla Läckberg, said that his income from commercial translation work has fallen significantly since the beginning of 2023. The loss of non-literary streams of income for literary translators will mean the “raising of the bar to entry into the industry, with only those with wealth able to translate literature for publication”. He also said that cost-cutting is not confined to non-literary translation – a publisher specialising in ebooks and audiobooks for which he previously translated has switched to a process known as post-editing, when an AI translator has a first go at translating a text before a human editor checks it and makes tweaks. Nuanxed, a company which facilitates translation via post-editing, said that while translators are “essential in maintaining high quality literature in translation”, their “methodologies will need to evolve alongside technological advancements”. CEO Robert Casten Carlberg said that “integrating AI into the translators’ toolbox” will enhance productivity “without sacrificing creativity or quality”. However, Smalley said there are concerns that post-editing can create “a lot more work” for translators, who have to carefully compare texts to catch misreadings and “poor or unidiomatic” style. “Colleagues who have done this kind of post-editing work say that it requires a far higher degree of attention, because the AI generated text often reads so plausibly,” she said. Bunstead said that “translators, like all freelancers, can go through lean periods. They won’t always know for certain the reasons why, but AI is currently the obvious explanation.” Of the 787 SoA members who responded – including writers of fiction and nonfiction, scriptwriters, poets and journalists, as well as illustrators and translators – 94% reported wanting credit or compensation when their work is used to develop generative AI tools. In light of the survey, the SoA said that there is an “urgent need” for government regulation of AI tools to ensure they are developed and used “ethically and lawfully”. "I'm certain that the act of creative and literary translation will live on in one shape or another,” said Giles. “For many there is a deep-seated desire to translate and I also believe there is an audience that desires human-translated content.”

Homework video from Paris was fabricatedThe Ministry of Public Security has debunked a video that sparked a nationwide search after it was widely circulated on social media. The video, depicting homework booklets supposedly lost by a Chinese first grader in Paris, was revealed to be a meticulously crafted ploy for online attention. The ministry's expose was part of a broader effort to combat online rumors. On Friday, it presented details of 10 prominent cases, highlighting the Paris homework incident as a prime example. The video was uploaded in February by a blogger surnamed Xu, from Zhejiang province. It showed a Parisian restaurant worker supposedly returning homework found in a restroom. The video said the homework belonged to Qin Lang from Class Eight, without specifying the school. That sparked a social media frenzy, with many netizens attempting to locate the child. However, the narrative quickly unraveled. A user claiming to be Qin Lang's uncle appeared in the comments section, providing an unverified school name. Subsequent investigations revealed the person making the comment, a person surnamed Yang from Jiangsu province, was another participant in the scheme to gain online attention and was not related to Xu.Further investigation by authorities exposed the entire charade. Police discovered that Xu, along with her company director, surnamed Xue, scripted the video, purchased generic homework booklets online and staged the entire scene.Facing administrative penalties and demands for public apologies, Xu admitted her initial lack of "legal awareness" but expressed remorse for the widespread attention and disruption caused by the video. Her social media accounts, boasting millions of followers across many platforms, have been suspended. The incident underscores China's intensifying efforts to combat online misinformation. In December, the ministry launched a nationwide campaign against online rumors. Over 80,000 leads and 10,000 cases have been investigated, with over 1,500 suspects apprehended and 10,700 individuals facing administrative penalties. The ministry has vowed to continue its crackdown, targeting individuals who spread rumors, fabricate news or exploit trending topics for personal gain. Law enforcement authorities will increase inspections of major social media, livestreaming and short video platforms to identify and address malicious online activity.

A special 'café' brings comfort to guests who have lost a loved oneMaking arrangements at a funeral parlor for a loved one lost can be an upsetting experience. One undertaker staffed by young people is trying to alleviate the agony by creating an environment where the bereaved can pour out their hearts about perceptions of life and death. Called Baiduren, or "Ferrymen" — a reference perhaps to Charon in Greek mythology, the ferryman who took souls across the river that separated the living and the dead. The Baiduren salon is decorated in a modern style, with soft lighting that contrasts with traditional funeral homes that are dim, full of funeral regalia and heavily scented by joss sticks.“摆渡人”的装饰风格现代,灯光柔和,与传统殡仪馆昏暗、充满丧葬用品和浓郁的香烛味形成鲜明对比。 Inside Baiduren, which looks by outward appearances like a café, relatives of the dead can tell staff stories that they may not be able to share with friends and family for number of reasons. A team of staff 40 years and younger lends their ears.“摆渡人”看上去就像一家咖啡馆,在这里,逝者的亲属可以向工作人员讲述因种种原因而无法与亲友分享的故事,店里的员工年龄都在40岁及以下,他们会认真倾听。 "Our job initially was funeral planning and handling related affairs like portrait design for customers, after a few years in business, we felt that we wanted to make a breakthrough in the industry because there are still so many stereotypes about and biases against funeral homes," said Xiaolin, leader of what Badiruen calls the "life experiencing project." On one wall of the salon, messages from customers are pinned. Reading through them, one senses that no matter how sad or desolate people may feel when they walk in the door, voicing emotions eases the pain by the time they leave. The salon, from the standpoint of both staff and customers, points to a change in how people — especially the young — view death and funerals. Its customers shun a common belief that the rituals of death are taboo to be shrouded in darkness.“咖啡馆”的顾客回避了一种普遍的观念,即死亡仪式是一种被掩盖在黑暗中的禁忌。 And those searching for jobs no longer regard undertakers as a profession to be avoided at all costs. Indeed, many on the team at Baiduren come from different career tracks, often never thinking they would end up in the funeral business when in college.
