The second interview in our "Proof of Heaven" series. Giovanni's Ring is the story of "Giovanni Rocco," a New Jersey police officer, known undercover as "Giovanni Gatto," who spent over twenty years in various undercover roles, penetrating biker gangs, drug cartels, white supremacist groups, and domestic and international terror groups. Most significantly, he was the mysterious agent at the epicenter of Operation Charlie Horse, a federal undercover operation that ultimately brought down ten members and associates of New Jersey's DeCavalcante Mafia family—the criminal organization otherwise known to law enforcement as "the real Sopranos." Giovanni spent nearly three years working his way into the DeCavalcante hierarchy. He was so convincing in his role that capo Charlie "the Hat" Stango (also known as Charlie "Beeps") began to treat him as his "right hand." Giovanni became so fully trusted that Stango went "on the record" for him with the family's administration and put him in charge of his own crew. Stango eventually assigned Giovanni the task of killing Luigi "the Dog" Oliveri, a troublesome made member of the crime family. In 1859, as America teetered on the edge of a civil war, Washington DC was a swirling mix of political tension and reckless partying and social life. Congressman Dan Sickles and his beautiful young wife were among the most popular party hosts in the city, until Congressman Sickles discovered that his best friend, US District Attorney Philip Barton Key, the dashing son of Francis Scott Key, had been having an affair for the past year with Sickle's wife Teresa. When Sickles saw Key outside his home in Lafayette Park using a handkerchief signal to invite her to their trysting place- he flew into a rage, grabbed three pistols, walked out into the park, and shot and mortally wounded Key. The story of Sgt. Don Dinwiddie, radioman on the B-17 GI Sheets, and his crew as they barely survived being shot down in German-held territory on Jan 29th, 1944,as told by author Terry Irwin. Today's history classes really don't teach the many ways that commen men with uncommon courage fought for our freedom in WWII- and this story is a great example. Saturday, January 29, 1944 -- it was the day that forever changed the life of T/Sgt. Don Dinwiddie, radioman on the G.I. Sheets, a B-17 bomber on a mission to destroy Nazi targets in Frankfurt, Germany. Hobbled by a bad engine and struggling to make it back to safety amidst enemy flak and German fighter planes, the G.I. Sheets was shot down over Belgium. Aided by members of the Belgian underground, Don evaded capture for nearly four months before being betrayed and handed over to the Germans; he finished the remainder of the war as a POW, spending the last eighty-six days behind enemy lines on a 600-mile forced march.
