Last year, we put out an episode about Ray’s lessons on inflation and recession–we think it will resonate with you now, especially. Linda is a democrat member of the Texas State House of Representatives. This week, she’s giving us an update from her political office, in a new segment we’re calling “Talk me off the lege”. Last week, Linda and the rest of the reps voted on a key piece of legislation: vouchers for private education. Families are being given vouchers that potentially drive funding away from public schools in Texas. Texas and fellow Texas House democrats voted against the legislation to protect families and support public education; republicans by and large voted for the legislation–and won. In this episode, Linda unpacks what happened in this legislative session, and the impact the passage of this legislation will have on Texas residents. Last week, it looked like the stock market was going to crash: it actually did crash, but it recovered by the end of that trading day. Linda explains what intraday trading is. We are witnessing Trump manipulate the stock market right now, using his Truth Social and X feeds to signal stock market drops and recoveries. This is, needless to say, unprecedented. Trump is reversing on tariffs, delaying them, and making exceptions for certain goods, which is adding to stock market volatility and chaos. Currently, Linda is not making new investments. She is waiting to buy when the market is less volatile. For now, stay strong, Investies! Don’t let your emotions get the better of you as you watch the market rise and drop and rebound again. Through her podcast and advocacy, Linda tackles the intersection of financial education, the economy, and geopolitics, helping diverse communities build wealth and secure their place in today’s financial landscape. Linda examines the most recent jobs report–and while we added 228,000 jobs to the market, the unemployment rate increased from 4.1% to 4.2%. Normally, positive jobs numbers would be reflected positively in the stock market, but the market isn’t celebrating at all. Trump’s tariffs and resulting reciprocal tariffs from trading partners like China are causing stock market chaos. Speaking of stock market chaos… We’ve been waiting and wondering if and when the market was going to crash. It is now. This is not the time to sell off your entire portfolio. This is the time to hold on–that will only cause the stock market to crash further. This is the time to invest in those blue chip stocks that you normally can’t afford. This is the time to hold fast and have patience, and manage your emotions as an investor. Remember: we’ve seen market crashes before. We’re currently headed towards a bear market, which means that yes, the stock market is crashing, or has crashed (depending on when you listen to this). And yes, the catalyst is Trump’s tariffs, and the possibility of a full-blown global trade war. Last week, the stock market made a “v-shaped” recovery–a steep recovery after a very steep drop. But are we actually in the clear? Linda analyzes why these gains aren’t sustainable, given Trump’s volatility as a leader. His ever-changing policy decisions on things like tariffs, immigration, and diplomacy have really serious implications for the economy, and for the stock market. We’re talking recession-level implications. Is this scary? Yes. But remember: millionaires are made in recessions. During moments of financial crisis, we can make strategic investments in blue chip stocks when they are down--and expand our portfolios exponentially. Linda Garcia, Texas House Representative, author of Wealth Warrior: 8 Steps for Communities of Color to Conquer the Stock Market, and founder of In Luz We Trust, is dedicated to empowering BIPOC and Latinx communities through financial literacy. Her podcast, Investies, tackles real-money topics, demystifies investing, and explores crucial areas like the stock market, money management, and the impact of interest rates on personal finances. Linda’s work advocates for financial independence, championing equity and representation for all, especially immigrants and marginalized communities. As a financial feminist, she encourages listeners—regardless of political affiliation, be it Republican or Democrat—to take control of their financial futures. Through her podcast and advocacy, Linda tackles the intersection of financial education, the economy, and geopolitics, helping diverse communities build wealth and secure their place in today’s financial landscape. This week, Linda discusses Trump’s economy, and his impacts on the stock market. As you are probably noticing, the market is still on a major roller coaster ride, thanks to Trump’s policy decisions–from DOGE to tariffs and beyond. Last, week the stock market neared correction territory after Trump enacted sweeping tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. After the stock market nearly tanked, Trump walked back the tariffs. We are in a limbo–will Trump eventually enact more tariffs? Are we heading towards a stock market crash? Trump’s capricious decisions are impacting all of us, republican and democrat alike, and the economy and stock market are suffering. Linda also unpacks a new jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While job numbers are up (yay!)unemployment numbers are up too (boo!), especially among Latinx folks. This doesn’t bode well for the economy and job seekers. Sweeping layoffs and firings across the country (especially from DOGE) will be especially represented in next month’s jobs report. Linda also shares updates on the latest update from Fed Chair Powell and his latest updates on rate hikes and stock market volatility, and why his comments impacted the market positively. This week, Linda unpacks recent stock market volatility, and its causes, which include layoffs and DOGE firings of federal workers, tariffs, and inflation. We are seeing a small rally in the market, however; but it’s unclear how long this will last. Linda also reviews the stock market’s performance in February. It’s no surprise that the Dow, the S&P 500, and the NASDAQ were all down in February. Linda helps us zoom out and look at larger trends in the market. She also provides advice for us as investors on how to approach our portfolios during all of this chaos in the stock market and the economy.  There are so many ways to make the stock market work for you as you gain more experience as an investor. Investies, we are now publishing new episodes every Tuesday! Thanks for tuning in. This week, Linda shares two committees she has joined in this legislative session: Pension, Investments, and Financial Services (PIFS), and Delivery of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The DOGE committee of which Linda is now a part is not the DOGE committee that Elon Musk is running on the federal level; instead, this is a committee that operates on a state level in Texas, and it reviews if Texas state agencies are running as efficiently as possible. Last Wednesday, the stock market was at an all time high. And then on Thursday and Friday, investors started selling off, which precipitated a sharp decline in the market. Trump’s trade war, and new tariffs, are the cause. Linda unpacks how this all went down–and advises us on what to do right now as investors. Linda also updates us on the latest in inflation. The CPI (consumer price index) measures the change in prices paid for goods and services–and it’s currently telling us that inflation is still a problem.  There are so many ways to make the stock market work for you as you gain more experience as an investor.
