Whispers in the Dark - A Mick & Mack Mystery
Halloween, 1950. The Royal Ontario Museum sleeps under a restless Toronto sky. Inside, a night watchman hears whispers that shouldn’t exist—voices that call his name.
Detectives Mick McCathie and Mack MacNeely arrive to find a museum poised between reason and superstition: a Lugosi-esque professor, a cursed manuscript, and a gallery of wax figures that seem just a breath too alive.
When the lights die during a séance, a vampire exhibit appears to move, a guard collapses with puncture wounds, and a page of history burns without a spark. Is it chemistry, trickery, or something older than both?
Whispers in the Dark available now!

Whispers in the Dark
This is Ontario Cold Cases—Whodunnit Wednesday and a Mick & Mack Mystery.
Halloween, 1950. In the Royal Ontario Museum, a night watchman hears his name whispered by empty halls.
A professor unveils a manuscript that warns: ‘On All Hallows’ Eve, the dead walk where their likenesses dwell.’
The lights go out. A wax vampire moves. A guard drops.
Science says ‘ink and mercury.’
Superstition says ‘curse.’
Mick and Mack say: follow the evidence—
even when it burns without a spark.
Whispers in the Dark.

The Vanishing of Barney Laflamme: A Cold Case Crippled at the Start
In May 1981, 24-year-old René Bernard Laflamme—known as "Barney"—vanished from Montreal just days before he was scheduled to begin a new life in British Columbia.
Barney was a man with a plan, deep family ties, and a one-way ticket West. His complete, abrupt silence since May 29th was immediately suspicious. But his final days were spent in the company of an unnamed man in Montreal—an associate characterized by family as "controlling and jealous"—with whom Barney had a heated financial dispute just before he disappeared.
Why was the lead suspect never properly investigated?
Host Jay Nicoll uncovers the tragic truth: the initial search for Barney was fatally compromised by "overlapping police turf" between the Ottawa and Montreal police, allowing critical evidence and the main person of interest to escape scrutiny.
Decades later, Barney's family is still fighting for the justice denied in 1981. This is the story of a preventable investigative failure.

Unresolved Disappearance: René Bernard Laflamme (Trailer)
In May 1981, 24-year-old René Bernard Laflamme vanished from Montreal.
He had an apartment waiting in B.C. He was expected home in Ottawa. His silence was immediate proof that something went desperately wrong.
The family gave police a prime suspect: a controlling associate who fought with René just before he disappeared.
But a tug-of-war between police forces wasted the critical first 72 hours, allowing the strongest lead to vanish.
This week, we expose the catastrophic bureaucratic friction that may have cost René Laflamme's case any hope of a resolution.

Amarillo’s Halloween Nightmare: The Murder of Sister Tadea Benz
Available Now!
On Halloween weekend 1981, the tranquility of the St. Francis Convent in Amarillo, Texas, was shattered by a brutal crime. 76-year-old Sister Tadea Benz was violently raped, stabbed, and manually strangled.
Police quickly arrested 17-year-old neighbor Johnny Frank Garrett. The prosecution presented overwhelming evidence—including fingerprints, pubic hairs, and a knife found under the victim’s bed—leading to a swift conviction and the death penalty.
But the certainty of the verdict masked a disturbing truth: the crime scene was compromised, and critical forensic evidence was consumed by the pathologist, preventing the defense from ever conducting potentially exculpatory blood-typing tests.
This episode of Historical True Crime Tuesday explores the controversial case that divided the Catholic Church, brought international attention (including a personal plea for clemency from Pope John Paul II), and ended with the execution of a juvenile offender whose guilt remains fiercely debated.
Join Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations as we unpack the compromised scene, the compelling physical evidence, and the profound questions of justice that hang over Amarillo's Halloween nightmare.
Because every case deserves answers—and every victim deserves justice.
