For many anglers, the idea that winter is peak cat season can be shocking. Guide Brian Funnell, who fishes the James near Williamsburg, Virginia, knows their cold season habits well and takes many clients out long after summer crowds have departed. What he's learned on the James applies to moving water blue cats anywhere in the country.  Hosted by OL fishing editor Joe Cermele. Edited by Mike Pedersen / Eighty Five Audio. Ben Hervey-Murray is a surf guide based in Southern California, as well as the captain of the U.S. surf fishing team. Born in England, Hervey-Murray's experience with “finesse style” surf fishing has given him a serious leg up with perch, which require a simple — though different — approach. Anyone can find them and catch a mess of them this time of year. Here's how. Hosted by OL fishing editor Joe Cermele. Edited by Mike Pedersen / Eighty Five Audio. Guest is Ben Hervey-Murray. For many of us, river time becomes vise time in the winter. My old buddy, veteran trout guide, and owner of Cross Current Outfitters, Joe Demalderis has narrowed down some key patterns that will help tyers quickly master necessary mechanics. And, no — we’re not talking about making egg flies and San Juan worms. This episode is brought to you by Montana Department of Commerce. Hosted by OL Fishing Editor Joe Cermele. Edited by Mike Pedersen / Eighty Five Audio. Guest is Joe Demalderis. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
My friend and New Jersey-based charter captain Brett Taylor is as addicted to jigging for tautog as I am. This week, we break down how it all works, because fall and early winter are ‘tog season throughout much of their range. And once you learn to jig them, you’ll never want to use a traditional ‘tog rig again. This episode is brought to you by Montana Department of Commerce. Hosted by OL Fishing Editor Joe Cermele. Edited by Mike Pedersen / Eighty Five Audio. Guest is Capt. Brett Taylor. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
All underdogs have their cult followers. Burbot — and burbot fishermen — are especially fired up on the ice, and at night. Guide and Montana resident Rick Matney explains how once you’ve dialed in the bite, it can lead to hours of fun — and one heck of a good fish fry.  This episode is brought to you by Montana Department of Commerce. My good friend and former long-time Montana fly guide, Miles Nolte, takes pleasure in dissecting faux pas in the fly game — and that's exactly what we do in this episode. What you'll learn  is that a lot of the most hated trout flies on the market are actually matching natural hatches, and they’re all excellent patterns for fall action. This episode is brought to you by Montana Department of Commerce. Hosted by OL Fishing Editor Joe Cermele. Edited by Mike Pedersen / Eighty Five Audio. Guest is Miles Nolte. From New England through Delaware, fishing live menhaden is arguably the fastest way to score a striper weighing north of 30 pounds. But if you’re not used to obtaining and presenting such massive live baits, there can be a learning curve. My good friend Captain Eric Kerber drops simple tricks for fishing these baits that'll have you breaking the 40-pound mark by Thanksgiving. This episode is brought to you by Let's Get Real About Skin Cancer, an educational program about advanced non-melanoma skin cancers. Hosted by Outdoor Life fishing editor Joe Cermele. Guest is Capt. Eric Kerber. Edited by Mike Pedersen / Eighty Five Audio. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
You can get your feet wet — and even put that first muskie notch in your belt — with just a little bit of planning and gear that’s not as costly or specialized as you might think. Wisconsin-based guide Gavin Marquart breaks it all down in this week's episode. This episode is brought to you by Let's Get Real About Skin Cancer, an educational program about advanced non-melanoma skin cancers. Hosted by Outdoor Life fishing editor Joe Cermele. There is no better time to put a hurt on trophy-class crappie than the fall. My buddy Jason Sealock is a true crappie addict who has chased them all over the country, and a lot of his focus is on very large bodies of water. But even if you target crappies on small lakes and ponds (like I do) these lessons he lays out for a fall attack still apply.  This episode is brought to you by Let's Get Real About Skin Cancer, an educational program about advanced non-melanoma skin cancers. No body of still water can escape the dreaded fall turnover. But by understanding exactly what turnover is — and what it does to the fish — we can at least get a better handle on where to cast when things get wonky. Enter Shan O’Gorman, a trained biologist and legend in the bass world who will demystify this pesky phenomenon. This episode is brought to you by Victorinox. For most anglers, drum are a nuisance bycatch. The biggest reason drum get the cold shoulder? They’re not great on the plate — or are they? Guide Drew Price runs dedicated drum trips on Lake Champlain each season and spends a lot of his personal fishing time getting after them. Why? Because they’re reliable and pull a heck of a lot harder than bass and trout. Here's how to change your attitude. This episode is brought to you by Victorinox. Nothing is more blood-pressure-raising to me than pinning a big trout on an itty-bitty dry fly. Scoring the take is the fun part, no doubt, but after it happens I just assume the fish won’t make it to the net. It’s a bad attitude, I know, but fishing micro dry flies also means fishing hair-thin tippet. Joe Demalderis is a fly shop owner and veteran guide on the upper Delaware River, which straddles the border of New York and Pennsylvania. Come late summer, tiny insects like flying ants are common menu items, which means pretty technical dry fly fishing. But Demalderis has been playing this game for over 30 years. He and I recently sat down for episode 30 of the "Quick Strike" Podcast to rap about how physics and keeping calm are the answer to besting behemoths on micro dries.  This episode is brought to you by Victorinox. Party boat fluking is perfect for anglers of any skill level. But even though the fishing isn’t really complicated, there are some things you should know before jumping on deck. Payton Gepp, captain of New Jersey’s Big Mohawk, explains how to get the most out of your day before you ever climb aboard. Hosted by Outdoor Life fishing editor Joe Cermele. Surface flies made of spun deer hair have been catching bass for more than a century. Today, Brandon Bailes is one of the best hair bug tyers in the U.S. He’s renowned for his ability to spin intricate, detailed patterns that are as much art pieces as functional. In this episode, he explains how to get these old-school bugs drawing up big summer bass. Hosted by OL fishing editor Joe Cermele. Edited by Mike Pedersen / Eighty Five Audio.
