There’s a quiet solitude that comes as one walks amongst the cornstalks—a sweet silence absorbed by the ever-present susurrus of leaf against leaf and silk twisting in the wind. The cornstalks were so tall, they damn near blocked out the sunlight, much less anyone or anything else. Rain poured from the sky, spilling from the clouds in a deluge that splattered against the earth and bore holes into the ground. The fire bloomed high into the night, eating rafters, wood, and everything that hid between those four walls. The caravan of refuges and Fowley’s alike stood quiet and uncertain amidst the judmental eyes of the Murkwood residents. The silence was overwhelming and stagnant, just like the air.
