At the tail end of the ’90s, promo mixes weren’t about streams, algorithms, or playlists, they were weapons. Burned CDs passed hand-to-hand in dark booths, shoved into promoter pockets, traded on dancefloors. If you wanted bookings, you proved it in the mix. Two of mine from 1999 and 2000 ended up taking on lives of their own. They were part of a series I called Harder, Faster, Louder ! Raw, unapologetic snapshots of where my head was at musically: peak-hour pressure, acid-laced riffs, relentless kick drums, and that unmistakable late-90s hard house attitude. I could never keep copies of those two volumes around. They’d vanish as fast as I burned them. This episode rebuilds them, not as a nostalgia piece, but as a reconstruction. I pulled the core tracks, rebuilt the arc, and fused both mixes into a single set that captures the spirit of that era exactly as it felt: loud rooms, hot lights, and zero interest in subtlety. Yes, I was fully in my BK phase at the time, and it shows. Consider this a time capsule from when hard house ruled the floor and subtlety wasn’t invited. This is Harder, Faster, Louder — rebuilt. FFRR (Full Frequency Range Recordings) sits right at the fault line where Chicago house crossed the Atlantic and rewired the UK. While the name itself comes from Decca’s post-war high-fidelity recording tech, the label’s real cultural impact landed decades later, when London Records relaunched FFRR in the mid-to-late ’80s as a home for emerging club music. At that exact moment, Chicago house was exploding, raw, drum-machine-driven tracks from pioneers like Frankie Knuckles, Jamie Principle, Marshall Jefferson, and Lil’ Louis were reshaping dance floors, and the UK was hungry for it. FFRR became one of the key conduits for that sound. By licensing, releasing, and heavily promoting Chicago house records in Britain, the label helped translate a gritty, underground Black American club culture into a mainstream UK rave and house movement. Tracks like Baby Wants To Ride, French Kiss, and Tears didn’t just chart — they educated an entire generation of DJs and clubbers. In short: Chicago invented it, FFRR amplified it, and UK dance culture was never the same again. Tracklisting: 01. Club House - Deep in My Heart (Funky House Version) 02. This episode salutes one of the wildest and most instantly recognizable labels of the 90s underground: Tinrib Recordings. Founded by Captain Tinrib (Jon Bell) around 1995, this wasn’t your polished trance label, it was hard house with a grin and a gut punch. Tinrib fused hard house, acid techno, and hard trance with a hint of circus chaos into a sound that was as theatrical as it was floor-destroying. Everything about Tinrib screamed personality, from its cheeky artwork and nautical puns to its unapologetic wall-of-sound production. It was the sound of late-night warehouses and too-loud systems, where the fun was as important as the drop. This mix celebrates that era: the Captain, the crew, and the records that made the Tinrib fish swim forever upstream! Tracklisting: 01. D.R. Base - Piranha 02. D.R. Base vs Karim - Barracuda 03. D.R. In the 90's, North American record labels wanted their cut of club culture and while the artists were solid, the labels - in their infinite wisdom - wanted to make as much money as possible so they came up with the term "Electronica". An umbrella to sell a rapidly growing but hard-to-categorize movement: techno, house, trip-hop, drum & bass, and big-beat all living under one shiny word. Where “techno” sounded cold and niche, “electronica” was sleek, futuristic, and accessible, a way to present artists like The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Underworld, and Fatboy Slim as the next wave of pop culture rather than club subculture. It described a sound that fused analog grit with digital polish, where machines could feel human and rebellion could groove. It wasn’t just about beats; it was about a generation discovering that laptops and samplers could be as expressive as guitars and drums — and often a hell of a lot louder on the dance floor. So, we're going to revisit some of these seminal artists in this episode. Let's pack our bags, jump in our Delorean and head back in time to explore. Tracklisting: 01. Do you remember WEMF out of Toronto? Jon the Dentist does!  WEMF was one of the early big-deal outdoor electronic music festivals in Canada and ran annually from the mid-’90s onwards. It was originally formed as a collaboration between Destiny Productions and Boscaland Records (Jon the Dentist's label) and was called "The World Trance Music Festival" but quickly grew beyond just a trance festival.  At its peak it drew thousands, spanned multiple days, and offered a wide palette of trance, house, hardcore, goa-psy, drum’n’bass. In short: a key part of the golden-era rave / festival culture in Canada.  In this episode, Jon the Dentist will take us on a journey through his memories and music of that festival and how it came to be.  Tracklisting: 01. Prolekult was a UK underground label that thrived in the early–mid ’90s, known for pushing raw, uncompromising progressive techno and acid trance. Its releases carried a darker, edgier energy compared to mainstream club records of the time, often leaning into stripped-back grooves, hypnotic builds, and politically tinged artwork that gave the label a distinctive identity. Prolekult became a cult favorite for DJs who wanted something deeper and heavier for late-night sets, standing out alongside other imprints like Hooj Choons and Additive. Though relatively short-lived, the label’s catalog left a strong mark on the underground, and many of its 12"s are still highly sought after by collectors today - especially the coveted "Prolekulture" double LP!  Tracklisting: 01. Ollie Jaye is a veteran DJ whose rise to prominence came via a decade‑long residency at the iconic Hippo Club in Cardiff—one of the UK’s seminal hotspots for trance, hard‑house, and euphoric dance music. Ollie helped shape the club’s fierce identity and championed the era’s signature sound: uplifting, relentless, and unapologetically massive. But Ollie’s not just about nostalgia, he still throws down with that same electricity. Case in point? This mix! He drops an expertly sequenced blend that feels like a hug and a hands-in-the-air moment.  This isn’t just a playlist. It’s a love letter to the '90s, where piano riffs, gospel vocals, and thunderous breakbeats collided under strobe lights and UV paint. Ollie curated it with the same instinct and passion that once packed the Hippo Club, only now it’s bottled for your headphones. This is also a resurrection of Ollie's "Ode to Hippo" series he initially published a few years back. Do check out the Trance mixes if you can find them!  From Tin Tin Out to Dancin’ Divaz, CLS to JX, this mix is for anyone who’s ever danced with strangers at 3 a.m. and felt like they belonged. In the neon-drenched underground of the 1990s, hard trance exploded like a warehouse rave on steroids, faster, louder, and unapologetically euphoric. Born from the fusion of German techno precision and acid-fueled intensity, it pushed BPMs to nosebleed levels and flooded dance floors with relentless energy. Think thunderous kick drums, snarling synth stabs, hypnotic buildups, and breakdowns so dramatic they made the ceiling feel like it was about to lift off. Hard trance didn't just soundtrack the party, it was the party. From Frankfurt to London, Ibiza to Toronto, its adrenaline-pumping sound became a staple of late-night sets and all-night festivals. It gave ravers a second wind at 4 a.m. and inspired DJs to push the limits of sound system punishment. Its influence still echoes in today’s techno, hardstyle, and psytrance scenes, but nothing quite hits like the raw, unfiltered chaos of ‘90s hard trance. It wasn’t subtle, it was a full-body assault. And I loved it for that. I was particularly partial to the more plucky-pad ran records over the euro-sounding riffs so I've spent some time cultivating as many of those cuts as I could for all you 90's rave fiends!  Let's go! From their early new wave roots to the darker, moodier soundscapes of Violator and beyond, Depeche Mode became a staple not just on the radio, but in clubs around the world. Founded in 1990 by Alex Simons and Red Jerry (real name Jeremy Dickens), Hooj Choons was born out of London’s underground club scene with one mission: to release forward-thinking dance music that didn’t give a damn about trends. While Simons exited the label in the mid-90s, Red Jerry took the reins and led Hooj through its golden era—dropping genre-defining tracks that fused trance, house, and breakbeat into something deeper, darker, and smarter than the commercial charts could handle. Hooj sleeves became a mark of trust for DJs: if it was Hooj, it was going in the set. The label built a cult following with artists like Tilt, Medway, Lustral, Solar Stone, Killahurtz, and Lost Tribe, and later earned iconic status with its tongue-in-cheek compilation series “Some of These Were Hooj.” Red Jerry’s own mixes and A&R instincts helped define what progressive dance music meant in the UK—and beyond. This isn’t trance the way the mainstream remembers it. This is progressive trance. In this mix, you'll hear meditative uplifts from Solar Stone, brooding grooves from Medway, twisted late-night spirals from LSG, and enough Red Jerry mixes to build a church. There are dubby versions, creeping Farmatronic edits, and vocal tracks that somehow felt more like mantras than lyrics. This is music made for moments—not for festivals, but for back rooms, closed-eye sets, and headphone pilgrimages. Built from layers, driven by groove, and remembered by the heads who never needed glowsticks to get high. Here it is, 2 hours of Hooj; 1991-1999 hits! 01. Diss-Cuss - Save the Day (Aquarius Mix) 02. Just in time for the weekend - let's get some 90's trance going! Additive Records was a UK-based sub-label of the legendary Positiva Records, and while it may not have had the flashiest branding, it played a critical role in shaping the underground-to-mainstream pipeline of late ’90s and early 2000s electronic music. Think of it as Positiva’s cooler, more discerning younger sibling — the one digging through crates while the big brother was cashing radio hits. Where Positiva was known for massive crossover dance anthems and polished commercial smashes, Additive was the vinyl-only proving ground — a boutique imprint designed to test the club viability of more progressive and experimental tracks. If a release did well on Additive, chances were good it might graduate to a full-blown Positiva release with the marketing machine behind it. This was music for DJs, pure and simple. High-quality 12” pressings, remixes that weren’t afraid to be 9 minutes long, and a catalogue full of gems that would heat up the dancefloor before most people even knew the name of the track. I knew it for trance, but it also churned out massive progressive house records (the real progressive house, not this modern "Prog House" stuff) so we'll warm up this episode with a few house cuts before breaking away into their better known trance cuts. Track listing: 01. White Trash - Acid People 02. Fletch - Space (Loudmouth Remix)

The Sound of the Hoover: A Tribute to the Raw Energy of Rave Few sounds in electronic music are as instantly recognizable and electrifying as the "Hoover" synth—an aggressive, howling lead that became a defining feature of early rave, techno, and hard house. The The Sound of the Hoover compilation series pays tribute to this legendary sound, compiling tracks that capture the raw intensity and dancefloor energy that defined an underground generation. The Sound of the Hoover compilation series is more than just a nostalgic throwback—it highlights an era before the mainstream club success of hard house, shining a light on the pioneering work of labels like TEC that paved the way. While Nukleuz and Tidy Trax later refined and popularized the sound, TEC embodied the raw, untamed energy of underground raving. For fans of classic rave music, high-intensity synths, and the unfiltered chaos of warehouse clubbing, The Sound of the Hoover remains essential listening—an electrifying tribute to one of dance music’s most legendary and enduring sounds. With some incredible productions, an extensive remix catalogue and one of the best live DJ sets at the time, DJ MISJAH was a force. A special treat for you fine folks! Recorded live in Saskatoon, Canada, circa 2001. This was an outdoor rave I put on for Canada Day. 9pm to 9am, although, the police shut it down around 7am due to noise complaints, it was one hell of a fun time! For those that don't know, Ollie started his production career by submitting a little known track called "Eden" to Jon the Dentist's BOSCA BEATS label. Jon snapped it up and the rest is history. They eventually collaborated on some of the biggest HARD TRANCE records at the time, including "The 4th Kingdom", "Feel So Good" and "Imagination". The latter 2 were snapped up by TIDY TRAX and given a proper release and remix cycle. Ollie and I first met in Vancouver while playing alongside Jon the Dentist for the Twisted Productions crew. We ended up DJing the same raves a few different times in Vancouver and eventually I flew him out to headline alongside Chris Liberator in Saskatoon. It contains a hefty dose of HARD TRANCE and HARD HOUSE with minimal chemical assistance. A few of the track ID's neither Ollie nor I could remember, as you'll see. Tracklisting: 01.
