India and the United States of America recently, in a joint statement, announced a long-pending trade deal under which the US will export select agricultural products to India while Indian exports to the US will attract an 18% tariff, down from 25%. Tariffs on US exports to India, as announced by the White House, will be reduced to zero. The White House also stated that it would “monitor whether India resumes, directly or indirectly, importing oil from the Russian Federation” and that, if India fails to stop such imports, the US would “reimpose an additional ad valorem duty of 25 percent on Indian imports.” In this episode of Editorial, HW News Managing Editor Mr. Sujit Nair discusses whether India has compromised its sovereignty in its dealings with the United States. He also examines how former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi dealt with the US and then-President Lyndon B. Johnson when he halted PL-480 wheat exports to India, and how an Alabama newspaper, during Indira Gandhi’s visit to the US, carried the headline, “New Indian Leader Comes Begging.” Learn more about your ad choices. BJP’s Chhattisgarh government, led by CM Vishnu Deo Sai, spent ₹18.57 crore on TV advertisements in just three months. In July 2024, Maharashtra’s Mahayuti government spent ₹270 crore on a special publicity campaign ahead of the polls, while Assam’s Himanta Biswa Sarma government spent ₹370 crore on advertisements over the last four financial years. The central government, too, spent close to ₹1,000 crore on print advertisements between 2019 and 2024. While central and state governments spent massively on advertisements, the government admitted in the Rajya Sabha during the current Budget Session that 18,727 government schools were shut between 2020–21 and 2024–25, nearly 10 schools every day. During the same period, private unaided schools increased by 8,475 in just one year. In this episode of Editorial, HW News Managing Editor Mr Sujit Nair discusses the government’s priorities and questions why such enormous sums are being spent on advertisements when the same money could be used to improve government schools. US President Donald Trump announced the India–US trade deal on Truth Social, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to stop buying Russian oil and instead purchase significantly more oil from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela. Announcing a reduction in tariffs on Indian goods, Trump said, “Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%,” and expressed his gratitude over what he called “this wonderful announcement.” In return, Trump said India would reduce its tariffs on American products to 0%. He added that India would “BUY AMERICAN” at a much higher level, including purchases worth over $500 billion in U.S. energy, technology, agricultural, coal, and several other products. In this episode of Editorial, HW News’ Managing Editor Mr. Sujit Nair discusses the Indo–US trade deal and its possible consequences for India if the Modi government agrees to open the Indian market to American agricultural products. Mr. Nair opines that such a move would come at a heavy cost with Indian farmers likely to pay the price. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of 'Editorial', HW News’ Managing Editor Mr. Sujit Nair discusses the possible reasons as to why the Shiv Sena leader Balasaheb Thackeray was not conferred a Padma award while other leaders such as Shibu Soren from Jharkhand and V.S. Achuthanandan from Kerala were selected. Mr. Nair highlights that Balasaheb Thackeray despite belonging to the same Hindutva ideology that the BJP follows, was not considered for a Padma award, whereas leaders from a different ideological spectrum were honored. He argues that the current Modi government is using civilian awards for political purposes. According to him, a possible reason for not selecting Balasaheb Thackeray for a Padma award is that it could strengthen the political prospects of the Thackeray brothers, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, in Maharashtra who are political opponents of the BJP. Pollution is emerging as one of India’s biggest economic threats even greater than trade tariffs and global protectionism, according to Gita Gopinath, Harvard University professor and former IMF Chief Economist, speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF). At Davos, Gopinath warned that environmental degradation, air pollution, and climate risks pose a serious macroeconomic challenge for India impacting productivity, public health, and long-term growth more than external trade barriers. As India positions itself as a global manufacturing and investment hub, the economic cost of pollution could undermine growth, raise healthcare spending, and reduce workforce efficiency. In this episode of 'Editorial', HW News' Managing Editor Mr. Sujit Nair discusses how Gita Gopinath faced scathing criticism on social media for voicing her opinion regarding the massive pollution levels in India.
