American Grooves Radio Hour, hosted by filmmaker and collector Joe Lauro, takes you on a deep dive into the music of pre-World War II America. It focuses on the Jazz, pioneering Blues, early Country, Gospel, Vaudeville and World Music which was being performed on the streets and in the taverns and nightclubs of pre-1935 America. ONLY original 78 rpm records from Joe’s world-renowned archive and the libraries of other notable collectors will be played. There will also be stories from the first generation of record collecting as well as backgrounds and information on the records and the artists. Part 2 of our continuing monthly series! - The infamous rare 78 collector magazine Pete Whelan's "78 QUARTERLY" published a beloved column in each of it's 12 issues titled THE RAREST OF THE RARE - collectors were asked to submit the records they felt qualified and everyone offered their opinions as to how many copies of the record might be out there - clearly a collector's "boys club" opinion page but informative still used today by certain dealers as a reference guide or barometer to a record's rarity. - The focus was COUNTRY BLUES, SKIFFLE, PIANO, and JAZZ records from the 1920s-early 30s - So, we are revisiting this column some 20 years after the last issue of 78 Quarterly was published with a monthly edition of AMERICAN GROOVES devoted to those alleged rarities! The first episode of American Grooves each month we will hit the letters covered by each issue of 78 QUARTERLY - this is our second show and covers C & D - 78s by Slim Duckett, Carmichaels' Collegians, Cookie's Gingersnaps, Jimmie Davis , are among the rarities played!

During the mid 1920s-mid-1930s the major record companies sent their portable recording equipment to several regions in search of local artists performing jazz, country, blues and ethnic music - the market for local music and music earmarked to different ethnic groups had exploded - Texas was one of te places they went - recordings were made in Dallas, San Antonio and El Paso and artists such as BOB WILLS, WHISTLIN' ALEX MOORE, THE RED HEADED FIDDLERS, TEXAS JUBILEE SINGERS, BILLIE MAXWELL, DON ALBERT's ORCHESTRA and many others were recorded - and featured in this episode ( 1st of 2!)
