Those of us who love nature photography enjoy the outdoors and its endless beauty. But how much do we stop to reflect on what it’s telling us about its own place in the world, and what it can tell us about ourselves? Michele Sons has a message that's so needed in this increasingly virtual world, as she invites us to connect more fully with our surroundings. Michele also encourages us to approach our craft with a playful spirit and shares how she has developed her own vision through continuous curiosity. Her newest eBook is "DAWNLAND: Creative, Holistic Approaches to Photographing Acadia National Park." This eBook offers both technical and artistic approaches to photographing one of America's most visited national parks, along with Acadia's physical and cultural geography to facilitate connection to place, and creative prompts for your own expressive image-making.DAWNLAND: https://michelesons.myflodesk.com/dawnlandhttps://www.michelesons.com/https://www.instagram.com/michelesonsphotography/https://www.michelesons.com/theartofplaceHORIZONS PHOTOGRAPHY CONFERENCE: https://www.horizonsphoto.com/ Use discount code BETH100 to receive $100 off your registrationSocials:http://www.bethbuelowphotography.comhttps://www.instagram.com/bethbuelowphotohttps://bsky.app/profile/bethbuelow.bsky.socialhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/bethbuelow/Acknowledgements:Inspired Creator Grants: http://www.naturephotographyclasses.com/inspired-creatorVideo Editor Alex Armitage: http://www.alexarmitage.comMusic Composed by musicdoctor: https://audiojungle.net/user/musicdoctor/portfolio Hosted on Acast. How does someone go from the strictest of photographic arts – photojournalism – to building a body of work based on one of the most abstract forms of photography there is?I’m pleased to welcome Kaisa Siren to the conversation. From her home base in the Arctic Circle, Kaisa has explored both far afield and close to home. We chat about how she realized ICM as a way to balance her creative energy, making images with intention, and how ICM helps to make the invisible visible.Kaisa is a photographic artist and makes her soul landscape visible with Intentional Camera Movement using northern sceneries of Finland as her backdrop. She focuses on themes related to the seasons of Lapland, and the sensitivity of nature. She lives in row·vuh·nee·eh·mee, at the Arctic Circle in Lapland, Finland, where she works as a freelance photographer. She is widely published in various Finnish magazines and newspapers and has had several solo and group exhibitions in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, New York , Scotland and Germany. She has been a regular contributor to the ICMPhotoMag from its very beginning. She is a co-founder of ICMPhotomag Network Community and ICM Photo Academy, and teaches courses on ICM photography, both in person and on-line, and has been a co-leader of New Beginnings workshops from the start in 2021.ICM Photo Magazine Network: https://www.icmphotomag.network/Connect with Kaisa:http://www.artistkaisasiren.comhttp://www.instagram.com/icm_kaisasiren/https://www.facebook.com/KaisaSiren/Socials:http://www.bethbuelowphotography.comhttps://www.instagram.com/bethbuelowphotohttps://www.facebook.com/bethbuelowphotographyAcknowledgements:Inspired Creator Grants: http://www.naturephotographyclasses.com/inspired-creatorVideo Editor Alex Armitage: http://www.alexarmitage.comMusic Composed by musicdoctor: https://audiojungle.net/user/musicdoctor/portfolio Hosted on Acast. Ready for something a bit different that might make you rethink having people - or even yourself - in the frame? I'm joined by Sara Kushner, and we talk about how she got started putting herself in the frame, why her work can't be classified as glorified selfies, and what emotional, logistical, and technical aspects you want to consider if you're thinking about trying out self-portraiture.Even if you have no interest in putting yourself in front of the camera, you're still going to hear wisdom that will be useful when you are behind the camera.(PS: I had the delightful experience of meeting Sara at the Winter Women's Photography Conference in Estes Park, Colorado in early February. She's just as charming in person as she is online!)Episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2upzRyM4fHQ&list=PLaUQ33Eh9FrrOXCUorA4Co5JrOKDbhNZJ&index=1&t=69sSara Kushner is an environmental self-portrait photographer on a mission to make life a bit more playful. Through her lens, she celebrates the beauty of self-expression, body acceptance, and authenticity, inviting others to see the world in a new light. Her whimsical, vibrant self-portraits reflect her deep commitment to joy and her appreciation of the natural spaces in which she creates. Sara hopes her work will inspire others to embrace their true selves beyond societal expectations, while appreciating and celebrating the unparalleled beauty found in nature.BONUS: Discount code on Sara's limited edition prints: PIXELS5Connect with Sara:http://sarakushner.comhttp://sarakushner.com/shophttp://instagram.com/sara_at_playhttp://zesty-nutrition.comDid you find this video valuable? When it comes to improving our photography, we often focus on a few areas: our creative vision, our technical and processing skills, and our gear. Those are all important, but they’re missing a critical element: YOU. In this conversation with Alister Benn, we talk about what it means to bring yourself to your photography, his evolution into creating autobiographical images, and what role story and context play in how we present our work. We have a million ways to plan out every aspect of our photography time, but my guest today invites us to leave room for the unexpected and in doing so, to be open to what pulls at our eyes and hearts.Wendy Bagnall is a photographic artist who lives in England. The natural landscape is the inspiration behind her work, which is an interpretation of what she sees. Wendy’s approach is unrestrictive and often with an abstract quality, augmenting the light, texture and topography of the landscape, creating pieces that aim to evoke an emotional connection with the viewer. http://www.wendybagnall.comhttps://www.instagram.com/wendybagnall_/Resources recommended by Wendyhttps://www.seantucker.photography/the-meaning-in-the-making (be sure to subscribe to Sean's outstanding YT channel, too! https://www.youtube.com/c/seantuckerphoto )Rachael Talibart: https://www.instagram.com/rachaeltalibart/Valda Bailey: https://www.instagram.com/valda_bailey_art/Vivian Maier: https://www.vivianmaier.com/Ellis O'Conner: https://www.instagram.com/ellisoconnor/Did you find this video valuable? Let's talk about a word we sometimes avoid when talking about our photography: PLAY. I embrace the concept even as I use every other word to describe the process. What's up with that?! Here's why play should be taken seriously and a few ideas to help shift our mindset. Mindfulness might be something of a buzzword, but when it comes to our photography, it’s worth the effort to make it a practice, and my guest today gives us some useful tips on how to do that. In this episode, I’m speaking with photographer Beth Young. As you might expect when you get two Beths together, we had a great time, talking about embracing slow photography, finding order in chaos, how constraints help us expand our creativity, and making sure social media isn’t the boss of us.Mentioned in this episode:Embrace the Shake (Phil Hansen): https://www.ted.com/talks/phil_hansen_embrace_the_shakeThe Paradox of Choice (Barry Schwartz): https://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_the_paradox_of_choiceAbout Beth Young: Residing in Sacramento, California, Beth Young is a practicing architect and prolific nature photographer passionate about capturing uplifting images that endeavor to communicate the therapeutic effects of photography, both for the photographer and the observer. By employing a palette of bright colors and warm light on the landscape, Beth’s uplifting imagery seeks to conjure feelings of hope, healing, and renewal with an emphasis on wellness and the human experience. Beth Young’s photography is shown in group and solo gallery exhibitions, and is featured in hospitals, clinics, cancer centers, and healthcare facilities across the country. It's interesting that, as someone who appreciates control, I've chosen both a photography approach (abstracts, intentional camera movement) and an artistic medium (alcohol inks) that require a willingness to lose control. Wisdom from Rick Rubin and "The Creative Act" gets us in the frame of mind to loosen our grip and trust the process. Of the photographers I've followed over the years, Stephanie Johnson has been on the most transformative journey. Our conversation explores the significance of imagination and curiosity in the creative process, using our cameras and post-processing as tools to achieve our vision. My favorite part of this chat was Stephanie sharing her insights on the importance of giving oneself permission to play and expand creative boundaries. Stephanie Johnson is a self-taught creative photographer, who is primarily focused on Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), multiple exposure, and creative photography techniques as a form of artistic expression. She has a deep passion for creating uniquely distinctive images by working with camera movement to reveal the essence of any given scene, and as a creative photographer, she is always seeking to push the boundaries of her own artistry. She brings an inter-connected, creative, and intuitive approach to her photography-as-art to visually express the essence of light, color, form, line, texture, mood, and emotion through the various in-camera creative techniques of ICM. Stephanie has a Bachelor of Arts degree and graduate work in English Literature and is the Founder, Creator, and Publisher of ICM Photography Magazine (ICMPhotoMag).View the images discussed in this episode here: www.bethbuelowphotography.com/pixels-episodes/crafting-stories-through-intentional-camera-movement-with-stephanie-johnson Hosted on Acast.
