Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne announce today's winner of the Hudson's Canada's Pub Mystery Athlete of the Game to kick things off in hour three. Wilkins and Milne reiterate some of the previous hints they gave before connecting the dots.   Buying or Selling has the fellas discuss the bird William Nylander flipped to the camera last night in the press box. He did get fined for the move, but why even do it? Afterwards, they debate whether Drake Maye or Sam Darnold would be the better QB to start a franchise with...   The final segment for today, Jay and Reid unpack a special gift they received from the folks over at Prime Monday Night Hockey before dishing out the Words of the Day for the Edmonton Public Library!
Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne begin the hour by discussing the absolute dominance illustrated by Evan Bouchard against the Capitals. Three goals and six total points, all while being a part of every goal for the Oilers. How does that rank in Oilers history? How does Bouchard's stat line look compared to Team Canada's defencemen? Did Hockey Canada miss out on not taking Bouchard?   Locally, Elks QB Cody Fajardo pops by the program to talk about his offseason and the NFL Conference Championships. What goes into the mindset of being a QB? How difficult is it to play in the snow? What small/unnoticed things did Sam Darnold and Drake Maye do to get the win?   Reid and Jay go on to break down a specific moment between the Seahawks and Rams, moving on to the taunting penalty taken by Seattle's Tariq Woolen. They close out the hour by addressing some fan input in the River Cree Inbox and YouTube Nasty Chat.
A handful of changes for the Oilers ahead of their clash with the Ducks at home: Andrew Mangiapane gets the healthy scratch, Ike Howard returns to the AHL as Josh Samanski gets set to make his NHL debut, and Kasperi Kapanen suits back up! Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne debate Oilers loaning Ike Howard to the AHL, all while sharing the stats for Samanski, the projected lineups for the Oilers and Ducks, and the starters for either side.   We head into the locker room, firing away some Oilers audio clips, with Reid and Jay expressing their view of the team. Kasperi Kapanen took to the media ahead of his return to play, Josh Samanski answered some questions, and HC Kris Knoblauch also spoke!   As we always do in the opening hour of the show, the boys introduce the Off-Topic Topic for William Huff, talking about some of their favourite karaoke songs while asking fans for their input as well. Jay's Play of the Day for Play Alberta is next up, with the fellas giving away some tickets for tonight's game!
Over to football, nothing but storylines and exciting matchups in the NFL: The Broncos take on the Patriots, as the Seahawks meet the Rams! Who will win their matchups? Any expected upsets from Reid and Jay? What are the big things to know about each game? The fellas discuss.   Back to the Oilers, Wilkins and Milne break down some of the records the Oilers broke by allowing three goals in 37 seconds. How does that compare to NHL history? Who are some of the other teams to allow that many goals in such a short span?   The final segment of the week has Name the Animal, where producer Zach 'Koob' Kubusch wrangles a strange animal noise for the boys to guess. Words of the Day for the Edmonton Public Library closes the curtain on the program.
To start the hour, Ben Thomson of EST slides into the studio to test the boys during Benny's Blind Rankings. This week, Benny makes Wilkins and Milne blindly rank a top-five list related to the Winter Olympics. Which country has won the most gold medals?   After that, TSN's Farhan Lalji phones into the show to share the inside scoop on the Seahawks and Rams ahead of their NFC matchup. Will Sam Darnold continue to prove his worth and punch past Super Bowl Champion Matt Stafford? Will Kenneth Walker Jr. be able to carry the load with Zach Charbonnet out? What needs to go right for an LA win? Lalji breaks it all down, giving his take on the other game as well!   Following that up, the boys dig their teeth into the Oilers' 6-2 loss to the Penguins. They share their thoughts on the horrid start for Edmonton, which allowed three goals in 37 seconds, setting a franchise record for the fastest time to give up three goals.   Whose to blame for the lethargic 60 minutes of play? Should HC Kris Knoblauch have challenged Pittsburgh's opening goal? What did the team have to say about the game? Wilkins and Milne play some clips from the locker room as they drill deeper into the horrible loss.
It's a silly, but informative opening hour for the fellas as Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne share their initial thoughts on the Penguins' 6-2 smackdown of the Oilers, the NFL Conference Championships and a heck of a lot more!   Reid and Jay then engage in a discussion regarding Western Canada's disdain for Toronto, specifically the Maple Leafs. Is it justified? Has Toronto or the Maple Leafs done anything to garner any real reason to be hated? Where does it even come from? The fellas delve into it.   And Leafs HC Craig Berube shocked the media world this morning, showing up to his press conference sporting a gnarly shiner on his head, which required dozens of stitches. The boys use this as inspiration for today's Off-Topic Topic for William Huff, as they ask fans about the worst way they've injured themselves while exercising. And wrong answers only: How did Berube REALLY injure himself?
To start the final hour of the show, former Penguin, back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion and current radio analyst on Penguins Radio, Phil Bourque joins Reid Wilkins. He shares some stories from his time playing in the NHL, before breaking down the injuries and notes surrounding the Penguins squad.   Tom Gazzola, host of The Oil Stream and Hello Hockey on EST, also clicks in to get into an analytics talk with Reid Wilkins. Are they overused in the NHL? Which ones are the most important? And what does he think of the Oilers/Penguins matchup tonight?   Ben Thomson makes an appearance as he tests Reid with a bit of Canadian trivia before producer Zach Kubusch delivers Reid the Words of the Day for the Edmonton Public Library.
Locally, Oil Kings defenceman Ethan MacKenzie was a part of Team Canada at the World Junior Championship. He connects with Reid to discuss his experience playing in the tournament, before chatting about his time in Edmonton, and what it was like getting the call to represent his country. Wilkins also gets to know MacKenzie, asking him about his favourite NHL team, how he got into hockey and much more!   Into the locker room, Reid dives into The Oil... Understood for GCL Diesel dissecting some quotes from the Oilers. Mattias Ekholm, Kris Knoblauch, and Jack Roslovic took questions ahead of their clash with the Penguins. Wilkins notes some key stats surrounding the team and individual players, before glancing to the other side of the ice.   Buying or Selling is next up as Reid and producer Zachary Kubusch engage in a conversation about the greatest starting five you can form in the NHL using players from 2000 to today. Is Connor McDavid a no-brainer? Who starts in the net? Should Cale Makar be above Victor Hedman? The boys debate.
Reid Wilkins is flying solo on today’s program, teeing up the Oilers/Penguins contest, which gets going from Rogers Place tonight. How will the Oilers respond to their lacklustre game against the Devils on Tuesday? Wilkins plunges into the game, announcing the lineups and storylines, while going up and down Edmonton’s projected roster for the contest.   Joaquin Gage, former Oiler and co-host of EST Afternoons, pops in during the opening hour to chat all things Oilers! The conversation moves into a coaching-based discussion with some NFL coaching news breaking during the segment. Gager also answers some fun questions before sharing some stories!   And what's your dream 1v1 scenario? Jordan vs James? Nicklaus vs Woods? McDavid vs Crosby? That's our Off-Topic Topic for William Huff with Reid and producer Zach 'Koob' Kubusch sharing some fan responses throughout the hour.    An Oilers-based Jay's Play of the Day for Play Alberta brings the hour to a close!
With a big staff meeting planned after the show, all the main EST fellas are hanging around the studio. During hour three, YouTube Trev, Hernan Salas and EST's CEO, Dustin Nielson, pop by to talk all things Oilers, NFL, CFL and a whole lot more!   Host of EST Afternoons, Hernan Salas, joins the fellas! Nanso talks Oilers, previewing tonight's staff meeting as well. He goes on to gab about the NFL, with some big matchups this weekend.   YouTube Trev, Producer of The Nielson Show, then checks in to give his take on the Oilers losing 2-1 to the Devils, sharing his thoughts on Connor Ingram and Tristan Jarry, before the guys discuss the Vasily Podkolzin fight.   Dustin Nielson has a lot to say as he talks about the big EST Draft of Chores, before participating in the Words of the Day for the Edmonton Public Library.
The Oilers have to kickstart yet another win streak after being denied their third straight win for the ninth time this season following a 2-1 loss to the Devils. Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne explore the loss to express their view on the team’s overall play, the defensive execution in middle ice, and what they saw from the referees…   Did Vasily Podkolzin deserve 17 penalty minutes for dropping the gloves with New Jersey's Johnathan Kovacevic, right after he delivered a high hit on Connor McDavid? Reid and Jay debate the call, taking a bird's-eye view of the officiating of an instigator penalty in the NHL.   Within a fun first hour, we also have the Off-Topic Topic for William Huff, asking fans what their favourite sports book is, before Jay lays out the Play of the Day for Play Alberta!
Talking some Patriots football, Christopher Price from the Boston Globe clicks in with Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne to chat about Drake Maye's MVP-calibre season, their win over the Texans, before looking ahead to this weekend's clash against the Bo Nix-less Broncos. And can the Pats become a dynasty once again? Price breaks it down.   We then have The Oil... Understood as Reid and Jay dive into the NHL rulebook. Did the refs enforce the instigator penalty correctly on Vasily Podkolzin? Did Podkolzin have the right to stand up for his captain? The boys discuss that further, seeing what fans of the show had to say about the situation. The Podkolzin talk continues as Reid and Jay ask the question: Is Podkolzin a top-six player in the NHL?   Wilkins and Milne also get Fired Up for Gemco Fireplaces, highlighting a comment made by Oilers HC Kris Knoblauch as he spoke about his team's lack of urgency in the first and second periods, thinking it was "going to be easy." Reid and Jay also give props to Curtis Lazar as he hit 600 career NHL games.
For a Devils perspective on tonight's game, three-time Stanley Cup Champion and current Devils analyst on MSG Plus, Ken Daneyko, joins the show to give the inside scoop on the New Jersey franchise while sharing some personal stories of his time playing in the NHL! He chats about what former Oiler Connor Brown has been like with the team, the injury to Luke Hughes, and what it's like to witness a goalie tilt in the flesh!   Afterwards, the boys have Buying or Selling for Damon Bunting to buy or sell various sports takes. That includes the Oilers' final nine games before the Olympic break. How many points will they get before then? Plus, how important is coaching in sports?   Edmonton Public Library then presents the Words of the Day, which brings the show to a close!
‘Boom Boom’ Shawn Belle, former Oiler and gold and silver medalist with Team Canada at the World Junior Championship, slides into the show to talk shop. He talks about the impact of Curtis Lazar on the fourth line, the skilled play of Vasily Podkolzin in the top six, before chomping his teeth into tonight's action. He also touches on the goalie duel from yesterday, adding a story he has about a goalie entering a scrum.   The Oilers discussion continues as Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne highlight the workhorse mentality of Podkolzin. They debate the importance of practice and how showing up translates to the game. We pop into the locker room to hear what Podkolzin had to say about his preparation, before hearing what his teammates have to say about his work ethic.   And Curtis Lazar is playing career game 600, taking on his former team, the Devils! Wilkins and Milne chat about his continued impact on the fourth line as they wrap up the hour, naming the winner of today's Hudson's Canada's Pub Mystery Athlete of the Game as well!
It’s game two of an eight-game homestand for the Oilers as they play host to the Devils. Edmonton, having three goalies on the roster and an injury to Kasperi Kapanen, are forced to roster 11 forwards and seven defensemen for the contest. Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne share their thoughts on the game, airing some important statistics and headlines for both the Oilers and Devils.   And there was a BIG goalie tilt last night between Sergei Bobrovsky and Alex Nedeljkovic, marking the first NHL goalie fight since Mike Smith and Cam Talbot dropped the mitts in early 2020 during the Battle of Alberta. That leads to the Off-Topic Topic for William Huff, with Reid and Jay asking their fans what two positions in sports they would love to see fight. GM on GM, QB on QB, kicker on kicker?   Filling out the rest of the hour, Reid reads The Afternoon Headlines for 100.3 The BEAR, and Jay delivers his Play of the Day for Play Alberta, placing some dough on the Oilers game.
Hour three, Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne break down more of the Oilers' 6-0 and 5-0 wins over the Canucks and Blues to post back-to-back shutouts. They circle back to the NFL to debate the controversial officiating and the surprising outcomes on the field.   To get a pro perspective on it all, Edmonton Eskimos alumnus and Broncos fan Jed Roberts connects with the boys chat all things football and hockey. The boys pick his brain about the close calls and the injury to Nix, before asking him for his Super Bowl picks, and his thoughts on RNH reaching 1000 games played for the Oilers.   Words of the Day for the Edmonton Public Library sings the swan song on today's program!
Two games, two shutouts for the Oilers as they swept their weekend back-to-back. Plus, the NFL showed up BIG time, providing some gritty games, dazzling highlights and powerful playmaking over four Division Round games. Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne get into all the fun, recapping both wins for the Oilers over the Canucks and Blues, the Seahawks wrangling of the 49ers, the Broncos upset of the Bills and much more.   First off, Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram each picked up a shutout for the Oilers, all without Leon Draisaitl after he announced a personal leave of absence from the team. Are the Oilers starting to put things together, or was it just a favourable schedule? What does it mean for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to play 1000 games exclusively in orange and blue? Should they just alternate starts for Jarry and Ingram? The boys break it down, discussing the continued dominance of Ingram before giving some love to Curtis Lazar and what he's done on the fourth line.   In the NFL, there are a few discussion points: a possible miscall in overtime between the Bills and Broncos, Bo Nix's broken ankle, HC Sean McDermott being let go by Buffalo and the Patriots making it to the AFC Championship. Milne and Wilkins gloss over all the major moments from the weekend and the stories emerging today.
Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne have a loaded opening hour of the program, sharing their initial thoughts on the Oilers weekend sweep over the Canucks and Blues, the NFL Divisional Round with Reid's Seahawks getting past the 49ers, and the CFP National Championship going down tonight!   They kick things off by addressing a new trend they've seen online, before delivering a tattoo-based Off-Topic Topic for William Huff, engaging with their fan base. And to talk a bit of college football, EST's COO Matthew Iwanyk is our guest! He previews his Miami Hurricanes tilt against the Indiana Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff National Championship!   And we have some great supporters here at Edmonton Sports Talk, with one loyal fan in particular raising money to get a tattoo of Reid Wilkins' face on his body. No joke, loyal Nasty Cory B has a GoFundMe to try and raise nearly $2000, with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. Cory joins us during the first hour!
Down south, our neighbours in the States get going with the NFL Divisional Round! Both Reid and Jay make their picks for who will pass through to the Conference Championship Round. Which matchups will they keep their eye on? What are the big injury updates?   Matt Sekeres of the Sekeres & Price show in Vancouver then connects with the fellas to break the Canucks’ season. What’s the buzz around the Canucks? What’s led them to the NHL’s basement with 37 points in 47 games? Sekeres provides his insight on the trade rumours swirling around before tapping into the game tomorrow. He also expresses his view of where the fanbase sits with the franchise at the moment.   Following his time with the guys, we dip into the River Cree Inbox and YouTube Nasty Chat to get some fan insight on it all, before wrapping up with the Words of the Day for the Edmonton Public Library.
The Oilers were shut out 1-0 for the second time this season, losing to Ilya Sorokin and the Islanders. Reid Wilkins and Jay Milne recap the tough loss from last night, while debating if a team can "get goalied."   From Denver, Brandon Krisztal, who works for Guerilla Sports, joins the show to preview the big Broncos vs Bills AFC matchup. What needs to go right for Bo Nix and the Broncos to get through Josh Allen and the Bills? What should fans look out for during the game?   We then bring in the Athlete of the Week for Pasta Pantry, turning the spotlight to a local athlete who deserves praise for their athleticism! Molly McKee, a multisport athlete from Fort Saskatchewan, connects with us this week!
