If you’ve ever walked away from a conversation feeling spun, rattled, or subtly controlled, this episode is for you. Drawing directly from my experience as a trial lawyer, I break down the exact strategy I use in court to disarm manipulative and narcissistic behavior—without escalating, over-explaining, or losing your footing. You’ll learn how to stop their momentum, respond in a way that gives them nothing to grab onto, and use one powerful phrase that instantly puts you back in control of the conversation.

In this episode, I break down how to communicate clearly and confidently without crossing into rude or aggressive territory. You’ll learn why tone matters more than words, how to frame sentences so people actually listen, and why the most assertive communicators say less, not more. If you’ve ever been told you’re “too soft” or worried about coming off harsh, this one will change how you speak immediately.

To kick off 2026, I’m taking this podcast back to its roots — recording from my car — and answering real listener questions in an AMA. We talk about how to reopen communication after estrangement, how to handle confidence-shaking rumors at work, and one small habit that can immediately improve your relationships. If you want a grounded, practical way to start the year communicating with more clarity and confidence, this episode is for you.

One of the most powerful weapons in difficult conversations isn’t yelling, insults, or aggression — it’s confusion. In this episode, I break down how confusion gets weaponized to avoid accountability, derail clarity, and exhaust you into giving up. You’ll learn how to spot when confusion is genuine versus strategic, and exactly what to say to regain control, slow the conversation down, and protect your clarity without escalating the conflict.

Have you ever felt like other people understand power better than you do — like they know the rules of the game and you don’t? In this episode, I sit down with The 48 Laws of Power author Robert Greene to talk about what power really is, how to use it without becoming manipulative, and why feeling powerless can quietly wreck your life. We get into communication, self-love, boundaries, and how to spot people who don’t have your best interests at heart, plus a preview of his new book The Law of the Sublime and what surviving a near-death experience taught him about appreciating life.

Ever notice how someone else’s bad mood can instantly throw yours off? In this episode, I’m teaching you exactly how to keep negative energy from hijacking your day. You’ll learn the same three tools I use in real time: how to call out the tension in the room, how to separate someone’s tone from the truth in their message, and how to protect your presence instead of trying to fix their problems. If other people’s energy drains you, this episode gives you the reset you’ve been looking for.

In this episode, I’m breaking down how to have a calm, productive conversation with someone you disagree with on every level — whether it’s politics at the dinner table, opinions that make your stomach flip, or that one family member who loves stirring the pot. The goal isn’t to convert anyone. It’s to protect your peace, communicate with clarity, and walk away proud of how you showed up. I’ll walk you through the exact framework I use: stop arguing the opinion and identify the need underneath it, shift from proving to understanding, and learn to “water your own garden” so you’re not wasting emotional energy trying to fix someone else’s. If you’ve got holiday dinners coming up, this one’s your armor.

I don’t want what sounds nice—I want what’s real. This episode is about stripping away the polish in conversations and showing up with integrity and authenticity. I break down why perfection actually hurts communication, how authenticity and integrity differ, and why your presence will always matter more than your technique. If you’ve ever caught yourself performing instead of connecting, this episode will help you return to what’s true.

I sat down with my friend Jamie Kern Lima—founder of IT Cosmetics and New York Times bestselling author of Worthy—to talk about turning rejection into purpose. She shares how she transformed years of “no” into a billion-dollar yes, the mindset shifts that build real self-worth, and how to protect your energy by curating the right circle. If you’ve ever doubted yourself or felt like your confidence took a hit, this episode shows you how to get it back.

If you’ve ever felt a conversation slip out of your control, this episode is for you. I’m walking you through exactly how to shift the power dynamic back in your favor without getting loud or defensive. I’ll show you how to use smart reset questions, how to call out intent with “Did you mean…” phrases, and why silence is often your strongest move. These three tools will help you stay composed, confident, and in control—no matter who you’re talking to.

When someone comes at you with anger, judgment, or blame, it’s easy to take the bait. But real confidence shows up in your ability to stay calm when others lose control. In this episode, I break down how to regulate yourself when you’re under attack — the exact mental shift that stops defensiveness in its tracks. You’ll learn the “observe, don’t absorb” rule, simple breathing and grounding tools, and the one mindset that helps you stay cool no matter who’s trying to push your buttons.

In this episode, I’m breaking down the small language habits that secretly make hard conversations harder. Most of us think we’re being clear or kind — but the words we use often fuel defensiveness instead of understanding. I’ll show you how to stop using “you” statements that sound like blame, cut out weak disclaimers that undercut your point, and reframe your message so it lands with strength and respect.

This one’s for the parents—or anyone raising little humans. I sit down with Dr. Becky Kennedy, clinical psychologist and bestselling author of Good Inside, to unpack what’s really behind kids’ “bad behavior.” We talk about the mindset shift every parent needs, the three words that can calm any meltdown, and how to hold firm boundaries without losing connection. If you’ve ever thought, “Why won’t my kid just listen?” — this conversation will change the way you see those moments forever.
If you want to check out Good Inside, the platform Dr. Becky built, you can head to goodinside.com and use the code JEFFERSON15 for 15% off your first membership. That’s JEFFERSON15, https://www.goodinside.com/ — offer expires December 31st, 2025.

Being nice won’t save you — especially in conflict. Too often, we think if we’re agreeable enough, people will treat us better or listen more. But that’s not how it works. In this episode, I talk about why “nice” people often get steamrolled in difficult conversations, the difference between being nice and being respectful, and how respectful firmness is actually the real power move.

Being told to “calm down” never actually makes you calmer. In this episode, I unpack what “calm” really means in conversation—and why it often backfires. Instead of aiming for a blank-slate calm, I’ll show you how to create a grounded connection—a way to stay present, regulate your emotions, and still lean into the conversation with honesty. And stick around until the end, because I’ll give you three powerful comebacks you can use the next time someone tells you to “calm down.”

A belittling comment is never about you—it’s about them. In this episode, I break down why people use belittling remarks as a grab for dominance, how to decode the real intent behind their words, and why it’s usually just a projection of their own insecurity. You’ll learn the exact questions to ask that shut down the power play, shift the spotlight back where it belongs, and keep you in control of the conversation.

I flew to Nashville, sat in Dr. John Delony’s studio, and we had the kind of friend-to-friend talk I wish everyone could hear. We got honest about anxiety—how I’ve felt it in my own body—and why our “imaginary fights” leave us overheated before a real conversation even starts. John shared the two moves that changed my playbook: bring calm (it spreads) and tell the truth (facts are kind). We dug into abandonment fears, childhood stuff that sneaks into marriage, and that gut-punch line: “You marry your unfinished business.” If you’ve ever felt anxious mid-conversation, or avoided a hard talk because you were scared of losing someone, this episode gives you practical steps to reset, reconnect, and talk like you actually want to be heard.

The ad approach on this show really distracts from the content, what a bummer.
💡
I love your podcast, and your TikTok reels. Is there anyway you can cut back on some of the commercials?
I have a question. If we always reframed our sentences starting with "I," wouldn't it seemed to act like a self-centered?
Man, you saved my confidence🙏🙏🌱🌱
Your insight and the gift you have in sharing your thoughts thru this podcast lift me up and enlighten my thoughts, and emotions. I am learning about me and how to communicate and use my words meaningfully.
💡
Mmm, why do these indicators of emotional immaturity sound familiar?? 1. Zero impulse control, 2. Insulted by what you say, but they say they're just joking, 3. Quickly move to insult you. 🤔🤔🤔
🎯
🎯
Your words really do magic 🎩 ✨️
Amazin infooooo........
Excellent advice on answering questions about your weaknesses, and the importance of mentioning that you’re working on it (if you are) with examples.
Excellent advice. I’ve been accused of being a narcissist moments before being told I’m crazy and need professional help. This happens most every time I disagree with one particular person. I’ve not heard it from anyone else. I guess I was nuts for thinking that the truth would prevail if I kept on trying to convince them. It’s a relief to know that’s never going to happen, and I can save my breath. Thank you!!
Great episode! It's true that how we respond to rude comments can really shift the energy of a conversation. I recently read something similar on Lebensupdates.de about how public figures handle pressure and emotional moments—it’s always interesting to see how these lessons apply to everyday life too.
I thought this was great. I heard you on Mel Robbins podcast & started listening to yours. I shared this with my Managers to help them handle situations with customers, staff & more that are rude, etc. it is especially difficult when the person attacks us verbally in front of a ton of people . Thank you.
Such great tools, there is so much power in 3 short sentences.
loved this episode! Thank you so much! I'll definitely purchase the book to learn more
Love the Let Them theory, good to be reminded of it often.
Oh yes. Yes, yes, yes! You're a rock star. Looking for your book.
