Speaking Up

Speaking Up

2025-11-0634:20

A key part of making progress on EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) is speaking up when something is wrong. Bad behaviour, prejudice and negative workplace culture has to be called out in order for it to be sorted out. But, it's hard to do. Being part of a network can help. You realise you are not alone and can call on the support and experience of others to raise issues, encourage change... and perhaps even empower you to make a move to another role or organisation where you can feel at home, valued and do your best work.In this episode Jo Butlin - who has tackled inequality and misogyny in her own career - joins hosts Lila and Perminder to give valuable advice to people on both sides of the speaking-up process. As an employee, how can you speak up and make sure your voice is heard so that unhelpful behaviours and attitudes are addressed? As a manager, what should you do when someone in your team speaks up to you?Plus, Jo reflects on the progress of the network she leads and co-founded - The WUN. In only 7 years it has assembled over 80 industry partners and more than 10,000 members, giving it real strength and influence. It exists to give women the confidence and skills they need to build lasting, fulfilling career in the utilities sector. EDI stands for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, but Inclusion is often the least discussed, least understood and least prioritised of the three. Paul has worked with and advised high profile organisations around the world with the aim of creating and sustaining environments where everyone can reach their human potential.Discussion points include:What Inclusion is (and what it isn't)How we all subconsciously adapt ourselves to "fit in" and where that can go wrongWhy progress on inclusion can totally transform workplace cultureCore steps that any size organisation can take to be more inclusiveWhy the recent EDI backlash might contain a positive opportunityAdvice for anyone feeling unhappy due to inclusion issuesSpecific advice for individuals and organisations in the UK water sectorTo find out more about Enolla Consulting, visit enollaconsulting.com Beneath The SurfaceThrough powerful stories and real-life examples, Beneath The Surface highlights EDI topics in the water sector, sharing personal experiences and best practices that inspire change. The UK water sector needs to - and is actively trying to - recruit and retain more young people, more women and more people from diverse backgrounds. But what is the experience from the other side? What's it like for the people the water sector would love to recruit and retain? Do they feel attracted to the industry? Do they find entering it easy? What about when they start work - do they feel welcome and comfortable? Can they see themselves building a happy and successful career? Or do they face barriers and challenges? There's no better way to find out than to actually ask real people for their lived experiences, views and opinions... so that's what we do in this episode. We speak to two young people - one (Malak) who is in her first year working in the water sector and the other (Saad) who is trying to get his first job in the sector. What follows is a fascinating conversation that reveals plenty of challenges, opportunities and insights that are like gold-dust to anyone involved in the effort to recruit - and support the careers of - the future young, diverse and gender-balanced workforce the water sector needs.Plus if you are someone who wants to get a job in the water sector, or you have new hires in your team... there is a whole lot of valuable knowledge in this episode.Malak Huseynli is a Process Commissioning Engineer at Evoqua Water Technologies / Xylem UK and you can find her on LinkedIn here.Saad Qazi is actively looking for a role in the UK water sector. Simon Frampton is Resourcing Manager at YTL UK, the group that owns Wessex Water.  Simon first became interested in neurodiversity after meeting an individual with autism who inspired him. That experience led him to begin to champion neurodiversity in his own workplace and then in the wider sector. Simon believes that more should be done to make the workplace more accessible and welcoming for neurodivergent people and that by doing so, the water sector can harness a vast untapped resource at a time when increased recruitment of skilled people is vital. In this fascinating discussion with hosts Lila Thompson (CEO, British Water) and Perminder Atwal (HR Business Partner at Xylem UK), Simon talks about how applying for jobs can be like cracking a code for those with neurodiversity. He also gives practical advice for senior leaders on how to improve recruitment and management processes.Simon also brings to life the scale of the challenge. People with autism, for example, are at a massive statistical disadvantage when it comes to applying for jobs, getting them and then being able to thrive once in position. This episode also busts myths and shares hope for what an improved sector - with greater opportunities for neurodiverse people - could look like.  Beneath The SurfaceThrough powerful stories and real-life examples, Beneath The Surface highlights EDI topics in the water sector, sharing personal experiences and best practices that inspire change. Episode 2 is all about leadership. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion can no longer be just a tick-box exercise that industry leaders feel they have to pay lip-service to or be "seen to be doing". Jason Tucker - an influential and respected figure at the top of sector - makes the exact opposite point: To deliver top performance, EDI must be right at the top of every C-Suite exec's priority list.Jason talks to hosts Lila and Perminder about how his career has taught him that a diverse, well-run team will outperform a less diverse team every time. It's about getting a variety of ways of thinking around the table. Granted, achieving EDI can be difficult. Yes, managing a truly diverse team can be more challenging than running a department full of very similar people... but the results are better. This episode is essential listening for people at every level of the water industry, but especially senior leaders. In Episode 1, Lila and Perminder set the tone for the honest and insightful conversations that will follow across the rest of the series, by sharing their own experiences relating to Gender Equality. Perminder draws comparisons between when she worked in manufacturing (where she tried to raise sexist behaviour with management and struggled to get it dealt with) and her later experiences in the water sector (which have been better, but still there are issues to address).Lila talks about the differences between working in an organisation in the UK where good standards may exist, but that challenges can be faced when representing the industry overseas. She also shares her concerns that many women in the water sector feel that their voices aren't valued, and that these women could be close to leaving the industry.Giving a male viewpoint are two industry figures (Steve Kaye from UKWIR and Garry Tabor from Smart Water Solutions) who both say that things have improved over the years, but there is still work to do.
