We’re joined today by Dr. Hillary McBride for a conversation about grief and its effect on our bodies. Joan and Jamie share a similar journey of leaving religion as Hillary, so the three discuss the grief over losing one’s identity in God. Hillary explains how important and routine it is for humans to change and reshape our ideas of reality, and it is in these repeated moments that we build our resilience and confidence to withstand the grief that accompanies us throughout all of life.

Today we have our first guest, Caroline Lee, who joins Jamie and Joan to discuss death doulas. Caroline offers a brief overview of her Bay Area practice and how she got started in this unique line of work. Similar to giving birth, Caroline describes the routine steps that precede death and her role as a doula in making those transitions as smooth as possible for her patients and their families. She also shares the ethereal aspects that oftentimes accompany someone’s passing. And Jamie asks Joan and Caroline to recount how their bodies feel when they care for a dying body. For such a weighty subject, their answers may be a bit surprising!
