Description

Mind Your Movies is a podcast for and by movie fans. In each episode, Ryan and Shane discuss in detail two films centered on a specific topic (spoilers and all!). Sometimes they’re movies we love, and sometimes they’re just movies that have to be discussed. After our conversation, we choose a random topic for the next episode. We choose the next films live so you can watch along with us! Join us for some fun (and informative) conversations about movies!

This week, we are exploring the creepy side of stop motion. While we've talked about Fantastic Mr. Fox on the podcast before, stop motion can also be an avenue for artists and filmmakers to explore the creepier side of things. For example, Phil Tippet (the mastermind stop motion animator behind RoboCop, Star Wars, and Starship Troopers) worked for 30 years on his passion project, "Mad God", which is a grotesque, dialogue-free, atmosphere-rich, insane world. From Chile, we also watched "The Wolf House", which is equally unique (or perhaps moreso), by how it utilizes multiple media (paint, papier-mâché, etc) and how it is animated. Both of these movies are incredible works of art that you've certainly never seen anything like before. Watch with us this week, and remember to mind your movies!Find us elsewhere online...email: mindyourmoviespodcast@gmail.comLetterboxd: https://boxd.it/bfj3DInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mindyourmoviespodcastBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/mindyourmovies.bsky.socialSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1CNC8Z3vhTU4vrZqQvu7gQ?si=lsx3bfN-TweulWsiE1tekQ&nd=1&dlsi=2be1d2d675164b1fApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mind-your-movies/id1770671814Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/90b476c5-c477-4af6-b330-a0abcc59d013/mind-your-movies#podcast #movies #moviepodcast #mindyourmovies #scarymovie #creepy #atmosphere #stopmotion #madgod #thewolfhouse #letterboxd #philtippet
This week, we are talking about Darren Aronofsky's newest addition to his filmography, "Caught Stealing". For this episode, we had the chance to record in person immediately after seeing this in theaters. As is tradition for Aronofsky, "Caught Stealing" takes place in NYC, but this is a more crowd-pleasing movie than his previous films, which are great but dark movies. Here, he seems to be aiming at a more accessible movie that anyone can enjoy. While we do a brief no-spoilers section, we strongly recommend this one and dive into spoilers so that we can talk about the gritty, late 90s, NYC, "After Hours"-inspired film in full.Find us elsewhere online...email: mindyourmoviespodcast@gmail.comLetterboxd: https://boxd.it/bfj3DInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mindyourmoviespodcastBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/mindyourmovies.bsky.socialSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1CNC8Z3vhTU4vrZqQvu7gQ?si=lsx3bfN-TweulWsiE1tekQ&nd=1&dlsi=2be1d2d675164b1fApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mind-your-movies/id1770671814Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/90b476c5-c477-4af6-b330-a0abcc59d013/mind-your-movies#podcast #movies #moviepodcast #mindyourmovies #moviepodcast #moviereviews #cinema #cinephiles #cinemapodcast #movietheaters #movielocations #moviedirectors #moviefans #podcasters #filmlovers #films #aronofsky #darrenaronofsky #2025release #caughtstealing #newreleases #2025release #austinbutler #zoekravitz
Despite our screens being bombarded with semi-human singing cats, poorly CGI'ed alien tripods, and a terrifying amount of Amazon product placement, we survived watching our picks for the lowest-rated movies on Letterboxd. Ice Cube's phoned-in performance and the poor decision to use motion-capture CGI for anthropomorphic cats are just the beginning of the issues with these two movies. Of course, there are some laughs and some standouts in this mix here (looking at you, Taylor Swift), but overall the experiences that these movies offer are not quite worth your time. Of course, before jumping into our main features, we talk briefly about some movies we have seen recently, such as Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan", Steven Spielberg's "E.T.", and the absurd "Scary Movie". As for the feature films this week, whether you've suffered through these cinematic bruises or not, join us this week as we break down the bad, the worse, and the ugliest of these two flicks!Find us elsewhere online...email: mindyourmoviespodcast@gmail.comLetterboxd: https://boxd.it/bfj3DInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mindyourmoviespodcastBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/mindyourmovies.bsky.socialSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1CNC8Z3vhTU4vrZqQvu7gQ?si=lsx3bfN-TweulWsiE1tekQ&nd=1&dlsi=2be1d2d675164b1fApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mind-your-movies/id1770671814Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/90b476c5-c477-4af6-b330-a0abcc59d013/mind-your-movies#podcast #movies #moviepodcast #mindyourmovies #scarymovie #newreleases #paddington #badmovies #bestoftheworst #letterboxd #blackswan #darrenaronofsky #waroftheworlds #amazon #cats #together #taylorswift #musicals #aliens #invasionmovies
Ep 24.5: "Weapons" (2025)

Ep 24.5: "Weapons" (2025)

2025-08-2101:16:20

Zach Cregger's newest addition to what we consider the horror genre is an absolute blast! Weapons is full of tension, scares, themes, and laughs, and we wholeheartedly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. We talk briefly about the movie as a whole without any spoilers for the first bit of this episode, and then transition to a spoiler-heavy conversation to dive deep into the film in all of its glory. From its mystery, its characters, its storytelling, and its enjoyment factor, we look at every aspect of the film and discuss its place among recent additions to the horror genre, such as "Together" with Alison Brie and Dave Franco, and Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance" that received some love during the Oscars last year. Weapons is an excellent original concept, and we are looking forward to Cregger's next steps into the world of cinema! (Resident Evil, here we come!).
Good parody movies can be hard to find, but we've found some of the funniest ones to talk about on this week's episode! This week we are looking at a faithful return to form for David Zucker and Leslie Nielsen's "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad" (1988), with Akiva Schaffer's 2025 "The Naked Gun" starring Liam Neeson, and a cult classic parody on the blaxploitation subgenre in Scott Sanders' dynamic "Black Dynamite" (2009) starring Michael Jai White! Both of these films are packed with nonstop laughter, and we enjoy quite a discussion on their cultural relevance, the hopeful rise of comedies, and the parody genre in general. Before we jump into our main features, we give some love to the new Zach Cregger film, "Weapons", and the new Michael Shanks release, "Together", starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, among other recent watches. But, at the end of our episode, we lock in our picks for our next full episode on "Letterboxd's Bottom 250"...So, join us as we unravel the conspiracy behind how these two movies are nefariously connected, address the controversy surrounding the crane cast in Schaffer's new film, and explore the lowest depths of Letterboxd's most hated movies. From the French New Wave's great Agnes Varda to today's Coralie Fargeat, female directors have long been an under-highlighted and incredibly important piece of cinema. Even as far as 1895, Alice Guy-Blaché was a pioneer filmmaker and one of the, if not the, first narrative directors of all time. Today, Ryan and Shane each picked out five of their favorite female-directed movies to recommend to you! New York City has long been an iconic location with its diverse neighborhoods and its fame as America's largest city. This week, we explore two iconic masterpieces made in the "Big Apple", watching Spike Lee deliver pizza on a scorching hot day in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, and Griffin Dunne get lost in a nightmarish string of coincidences in SoHo, Manhattan. Join us this week for Spike Lee's seminal "Do the Right Thing" and Martin Scorsese's underappreciated masterpiece "After Hours". Before we break into our main discussion, we discuss some of the movies we've seen recently, including the new "Fantastic Four: First Steps", "Smile 2", and Ari Aster's controversial "Eddington". While we have talked about Masahiro Shinoda's "Demon Pond" (1979) and Erik Skjoldbjærg's "Insomnia" (1997) on the podcast recently, we wanted to highlight some more under-the-radar non-English movies. In this episode, we each picked a movie with fewer than 50k, 40k, 30k, 20k, and 10k views on Letterboxd. Our picks span across the globe from Iran to Argentina and across genres from supernatural giallo to high-intensity action! If you are looking for a hidden gem and aren't afraid of subtitles, these are our picks for movies that deserve larger audiences! From "damned dirty apes" to "pure wild animal craziness", join us this week as we look at two iconic pieces of media that feature talking animals. Before we jump into our discussion on the original 1968 "Planet of the Apes" and Wes Anderson's truly fantastic "Fantastic Mr Fox", we discuss other things we've watched recently, including the new "F1" and "Superman" movies as well as Dario Argento's classic "Deep Red". It is a packed episode where we talk spoiler-free about those recent watches and dive deep into all of the things we loved and didn't love about our two main features. Don't forget to stick around until the end to hear us pick out our movies for next episode, and remember to mind your movies!
What's the best movie house? What's the best apartment featured in a movie? What's the least deadly motel? Join us this week as Ryan and Shane discuss and draft houses, apartments, hotels, motels, and much more from a wide range of movies. What would you pick, and who ended up with the better lineup?
This week we’re talking about a revolutionary decade for cinema, the 1970’s. We each chose movies off the beaten path. First we discuss Alejandro Jodorowsky’s surreal classic The Holy Mountain. Then we discuss Masahiro Shinoda’s kabuki fairy tale Demon Pond.
In anticipation of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland reuniting for 28 Years Later, this week we’re taking a trip down memory lane and watching 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later!
This week we’re talking about one of the most prolific Hollywood directors of the 70’s, Robert Altman. Known for his naturalistic approach to dialogue, genre deconstructions, and cynical vision of American society, Altman is hugely influential and a pillar of New Hollywood. First we discuss M*A*S*H, Altman’s breakout success and a unique approach to a war film. We also discuss The Long Goodbye, an iconic neo-noir starring Elliott Gould as one of the coolest cats in cinema history. Join us for The Long GoodM*A*S*H!
Happy Friday the 13th! This week we’re creating a tier list of the Friday the 13th franchise. Which “final” Friday is our favorite? Which movie has the best Jason Voorhees design? Join us at Camp Crystal Lake to find out!
This week we’re talking about two movies with tiny budgets and massive cultural impact. First we discuss one of the most profitable movies of all-time, Paranormal Activity. Then we discuss a classic of 90’s American Independent Cinema, Clerks. Both movies find ingenious solutions to make a movie on relatively small budgets. This week, we are talking about all of the Star Wars movies as we rank them in our mutual tier list. Here, the two of us agree on a lot of overarching trends in the movie series, but debate slightly on specific placements. Is Empire Strikes Back the best movie? Is Solo worth watching? How bad was The Rise of Skywalker? Give us your Star Wars thoughts down below!
This week we’re talking about remakes! We discuss Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia (2002) and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead (2004). These movies have different approaches to creating a remake/reimagining and we think one was much more successful than the other. We also discuss the original George A. Romero Dawn of the Dead (1978) and the original Norwegian Insomnia (1997) alongside their remakes.
This week we’re creating a tier list for Stanley Kubrick’s filmography! We’ll be discussing all 13 of his feature films without any spoilers. Join us as we discuss the madness and genius of the great Stanley Kubrick.
This week we’re discussing Single Location Movies! Our first pick is the found footage horror movie [Rec] (2007). We’re also talking about Hitchcock’s classic thriller Rear Window (1954). Two very effective movies in their own unique ways, and emblematic of their eras in filmmaking. [Rec]’s digital found footage cinematography contrasts with Rear Window’s beautiful Technicolor cinematography, but both utilize their locations to maximize suspense. Join us for [Rec]ear Window!
This week we’re reviewing Ryan Coogler’s supernatural musical thriller Sinners. The film features standout performances from Michael B. Jordan as twin gangsters Smoke and Stack, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, and many more. We discuss film’s brilliant music, cinematography, and thematic storytelling. We begin without any spoilers, then get into a spoiler discussion toward the end of the episode.
