Description

Social Justice Origin Stories is a storytelling project that highlights personal stories and defining moments that have inspired individuals and organizations to labor for equity and social justice. Through truth-telling: the honest sharing of their experiences, storytellers teach us about themselves, enabling us to learn about ourselves and our world through their stories. By reconnecting with pivotal moments of activation in their lives, they invite us to do the same.

At Social Justice Origin Stories, we believe that there's power in storytelling and that lived experience is experience. There's room enough for all of us to do this work. There are many ways to contribute, and our contributions don't need to be the same. We can enter and remain engaged in the work using the gifts that are special to us while supporting others and using theirs. We have the capacity to grow and change for the better when exposed to new information and experiences. We believe in our inherent worth and capabilities, and we possess the power to inspire and create change in ourselves and others. We can transcend the confines of the status quo to imagine and design more equitable and humanizing systems.

Every journey has a beginning. What's yours?

Dr. Byron Green-Calisch shares how he turned 14 years of higher education and leadership research into consulting, public media work, and activism in Florida. He shares how racialized campus crime alerts and gaps in leadership education shaped his scholarship and pushed him to claim roles as educator, activist, and healer, grounded in collective liberation and a desire to help the helpers. Byron also tells the origin story of the cookout moment that led him to co-found Justice Over Everything with State Rep. Michele Rayner, Esq., a coalition-based social justice center that leads with an intersectional approach dedicated to activating, fortifying, and uplifting communities in the margins of the margins. We talk about the importance of intergenerational work, supporting the helpers, and why creating spaces for activism and healing are necessary for lasting change. Drawing on her expertise in social work and education policy and her lived experience as a Black Biracial woman, Dr. Anissa L. Eddie shares how intentional racial socialization in the earliest years can disrupt anti-Blackness, foster radical self-love in Black children, counter the formation of harmful biases, and promote racial equity. No one gets to where they are by themselves, and this project would not exist without the collective wisdom of the storytellers who’ve shared their stories with us. This is Volume 1 of “In Community”, a special series from Social Justice Origin Stories. This annual series brings together the voices of storytellers whose stories were published in a given year. To everyone who has listened, watched, shared the stories, reflected on your own, and returned for more storytelling, thank you. Many thanks to the storytellers who have contributed to this project and have trusted me and this space with their sharing. Systems of oppression depend on silence, isolation, and the belief that change is impossible. Social Justice Origin Stories exists to challenge that belief by sharing stories of resistance, awakening, and commitment to equity and justice. These stories remind us that we're not powerless, we're not alone, and that the work of justice is sustained across time by people willing to imagine and design something better. Social Justice Origin Stories will return. Thank you for listening. 00:00 Introduction to Systems of Oppression 01:03 Honoring the Storytellers 01:17 Personal Reflections and Activism 02:13 Balancing Joy and Struggle 02:53 Understanding and Challenging Systems 04:49 The Role of Anger and Forgiveness 05:28 Healing and Spirituality 05:55 Rethinking Racism and Social Justice 12:27 Visibility and Representation 23:28 Power and Liberation 27:20 Championing the Journey 28:27 Community Intelligence and Kindness 29:53 The Power of Education 30:50 Planting Seeds of Change 32:08 Cross-Training for Social Justice 34:17 Embracing Neurodiversity 38:10 The Role of Storytelling 49:50 Fighting Systemic Racism 57:57 Conclusion: The Power of Collective Narratives Support the podcast by becoming a patron: https://www.patreon.com/SocialJusticeOriginStories Visit the Social Justice Origin Stories Project Website: https://socialjusticeoriginstories.com Subscribe to Social Justice Origin Stories on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SocialJusticeOriginStories Listen to Social Justice Origin Stories on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/social-justice-origin-stories/id1771268991 Listen to Social Justice Origin Stories on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5iBn70HzO4lFxk7sN3gwAf Follow Social Justice Origin Stories on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/socialjusticeoriginstories/ Follow Social Justice Origin Stories on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/sjoriginstories.bsky.social Like Social Justice Origin Stories on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61567841874653 LinkTree for more: https://linktr.ee/SocialJusticeOriginStories?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaZzPfl3gCm5NY9C_Y-glRzwDu-8BvHfkCJaQlDihfrQxbYWC1dnxgRL2kU_aem_kmgEcokBmDt8WaAtlWQMQQ Social Justice Origin Stories is produced, edited, and hosted by Relando Thompkins-Jones.
Randy Quansah, creator of Kujo's Kid Zone, shares a memory of an early experience with racism at school that sparked his journey of self-discovery and awareness of African history and identity. What began as sharing the lessons he learned with his daughter expanded into considering other kids and their families, which then became the inspiration behind his educational show for children. Randy talks about his dedication to educating children about African history, challenging Eurocentric narratives, the importance of cultural representation, and the necessary cycle of growth that comes from leaning and unlearning about ourselves and the world. His message to creatives is that you are more than enough. Randy wants listeners to understand the power of making the first moves towards implementing their big ideas, and encourages you to just start instead of waiting for perfection, knowing that the act of following your path will create opportunities for you to get to where you’re going. 00:00 Reflecting on Personal and Educational Journeys 01:09 Creating Kujo's Kid Zone 02:04 The Importance of Unlearning and Growth 06:15 The Power of Representation 07:17 Discovering Kujo's Kid Zone 09:38 Intentional Storytelling and Cultural Education 26:37 Challenges and Triumphs in Creative Pursuits 29:12 Exploring Iconic Film Studios 29:49 The Energy of Being Selected 30:43 Moments of Affirmation 32:14 Influences and Inspirations 33:30 The Impact of LeVar Burton 34:58 Gracie's Corner and Positive Change 38:54 The Journey of Authenticity 45:41 Reflections on Social Justice 51:55 Final Thoughts and Gratitude Follow Randy on Instagram @Kujoskidzoneshow Subscribe to Kujo’s Kid Zone on YouTube and YouTube Kids. Tracie Jae, human culture strategist and educator describes how her family both shielded her from, and prepared her to engage with racial injustice, and shares about the breadcrumbs that helped her to learn that racism shouldn’t be normal. She tells the story of the birth of her identity as The Quiet Rebel, and breaks down her more HUMAN (Honest, Urgent, Meaningful, Accountable, Nuanced) approach to equity conversations and explains why real social change starts with addressing harm, embracing difference, and staying curious about the stories missing from the narratives we’re told about ourselves and the world around us. 00:00 Introduction to Social Injustices 00:34 Understanding Difference and Community 02:19 The American Dream and Its Discontents 07:59 The Power of Storytelling 09:16 Meet Tracie Jae: The Quiet Rebel 11:53 Tracie Jae's Origin Stories 14:51 The Birth of the Quiet Rebel 17:42 Facing Racism and Injustice 28:24 A More Human Approach 37:51 Addressing Historical Harms and Honesty 38:35 Legislation and Hearts: Critical Race Theory 02:06 The Pine Tree and Cactus Seed Analogy 42:18 The Reality of American Identity 45:32 The Importance of Honest Conversations 04:52 The Shared Trauma and Healing 05:52 The Old House Analogy 53:05 Practical Applications and Human Connections 01:00:23 Sustaining Social Justice Work 01:00:54 The Role of Active Citizenship 01:02:48 Gratitude and Influences 01:04:34 Sustaining the Human Approach 01:09:39 Final Thoughts and Encouragement Follow Tracie on Linkedin: https://linkedin.com/in/traciejae Follow Tracie on Instagram @thequietrebelllc Visit Tracie's Website: https://thequietrebel.org Support the podcast by becoming a patron: https://www.patreon.com/SocialJusticeOriginStories Visit the Social Justice Origin Stories Project Website: https://socialjusticeoriginstories.com Subscribe to Social Justice Origin Stories on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SocialJusticeOriginStories Listen to Social Justice Origin Stories on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/social-justice-origin-stories/id1771268991 Listen to Social Justice Origin Stories on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5iBn70HzO4lFxk7sN3gwAf Follow Social Justice Origin Stories on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/socialjusticeoriginstories/ Follow Social Justice Origin Stories on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/sjoriginstories.bsky.social Like Social Justice Origin Stories on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61567841874653 LinkTree for more: https://linktr.ee/SocialJusticeOriginStories?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaZzPfl3gCm5NY9C_Y-glRzwDu-8BvHfkCJaQlDihfrQxbYWC1dnxgRL2kU_aem_kmgEcokBmDt8WaAtlWQMQQ Social Justice Origin Stories is produced, edited, and hosted by Relando Thompkins-Jones.
In this educational segment of Social Justice Origin Stories, Dr. Darryl B. Rice, Associate Professor of Management and Richard T. Farmer Associate Professor at Miami University, shares the research findings he and co-authors Dr. Tsedale Melaku and Dr. Jennifer R. Bishop write about in their forthcoming article: Jim Crow 2.0: Understanding Present-Day Anti-DEI Laws as A Function of Cross Generation Transmission of Systemic Anti-Black Racism in the special issue of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: on “The Backlash Against DEI Programs. Dr. Rice connects Jim Crow era anti-Black violence and modern anti-DEI legislation, and how social conservatism as a political ideology, and the use of the southern strategy across Trump’s presidential campaigns, exploits racial resentment against Black people, fueling current attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion. He talks about the inclusion tax: the disproportionate costs that are placed on Black people navigating predominantly white institutional and professional spaces, the impact of institutional capitulation to demands to roll back or end DEI policy, and how, by refusing to name and fight systemic anti-Black racism, organizations fail their Black employees. He also shares considerations for leaders and Black staff on resisting, advocating for equity, and protecting their psychological safety. 00:00 Introduction to Organizational Justice and DEI 01:07 Personal Motivations and Background 03:13 Systemic Racism and Historical Context 05:16 Research Findings and Political Implications 10:30 The Role of Social Justice and Advocacy 11:41 Interview with Dr. Darryl Rice 20:56 Understanding Anti-DEI Laws 28:32 The Southern Strategy and Its Impact 39:46 The DEI Attack on Higher Education 40:54 Impact on Black Women in the Workplace 43:52 Research Findings on Anti-DEI Laws 46:38 Advice for Organizational Leaders 54:11 The Inclusion Tax in Predominantly White Institutions 01:05:14 Personal Influences and Social Justice 01:11:00 Final Thoughts and Call to Action Connect with Darryl B. Beca Velázquez-Publes, Founder, Coach & Consultant at The Liberated Leader, opens up about the lessons she learned early on from her parents that made working for social justice a part of her DNA. She talks about the evolving nature of purpose and how her work with the Urban Core Collective solidified her social justice journey, allowing her to build a space that resisted norms in the nonprofit space and push collective growth edges to test new ways of being for work and in community. Chinyere Neale reflects on a time in her life when the frustration she often felt toward well-meaning but uninformed white people who considered themselves allies in racial justice work became a mirror for her own growth. After attending an LGBTQIA+ ally training at work one day, she came to a humbling realization that she also had the capacity to be well-meaning but uninformed in a different way. The experience expanded her understanding of privilege and oppression, and influenced her approach to life as a “never-ending classroom”. As a retired global public health educator from Detroit with a multifaceted career, Chinyere reflects on her upbringing in segregated Detroit, her passion for music and the arts, her role as a sexual health educator, and what led her to finally embrace being seen as a teacher. Her storytelling speaks to the importance of authenticity, keeping joy a priority in movement work, and remembering that we all have a role to play in working for social justice. 00:00 Introduction: Multifaceted Careers 01:13 The Journey to Becoming a Teacher 02:10 Social Justice Origin Stories: Project Overview 03:21 Introducing Today's Guest: Chinyere Neale 05:10 Chinyere's Background and Upbringing 07:11 Activism and Community Involvement 08:58 Realizing the Role of a Teacher 12:41 Experiences in Ally Training 25:05 Path to Sexual Health Education 31:29 Landing the Perfect Job 35:52 Reflecting on Career Transitions 38:20 Memorable Moments with Students 39:37 Impactful Student Stories 47:56 The Importance of Joy and Self-Care 54:43 The Role of Art and Music in Social Justice 56:18 Influences and Personal History 01:06:24 Advice for Future Generations 01:08:35 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Support the podcast by becoming a patron: https://www.patreon.com/SocialJusticeOriginStories Visit the Social Justice Origin Stories Project Website: https://socialjusticeoriginstories.com Subscribe to Social Justice Origin Stories on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SocialJusticeOriginStories Listen to Social Justice Origin Stories on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/social-justice-origin-stories/id1771268991 Listen to Social Justice Origin Stories on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5iBn70HzO4lFxk7sN3gwAf Follow Social Justice Origin Stories on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/socialjusticeoriginstories/ Follow Social Justice Origin Stories on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/sjoriginstories.bsky.social Like Social Justice Origin Stories on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61567841874653 LinkTree for more: https://linktr.ee/SocialJusticeOriginStories?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaZzPfl3gCm5NY9C_Y-glRzwDu-8BvHfkCJaQlDihfrQxbYWC1dnxgRL2kU_aem_kmgEcokBmDt8WaAtlWQMQQ Social Justice Origin Stories is produced, edited, and hosted by Relando Thompkins-Jones.

Kelly Maxwell reflects on how coming out as a lesbian in the 1990s sparked a deeper examination of her whiteness and a lifelong commitment to understanding her relationship to privilege and oppression. She traces her journey from growing up in an almost exclusively white small town in Ohio to dedicating 17 years to social justice education through intergroup dialogue at The Program on Intergroup Relations at the University of Michigan. Kelly also shares stories from her family life as part of a multiracial, interracial, two-mom household, and how those dynamics shape her personal and professional values on justice. She speaks candidly about the tensions of institutional “neutrality,” and how she works to align her values with her responsibilities on campus and in her role as Board Chair of the Difficult Dialogues National Resource Center, a nonprofit that supports colleges and universities in using dialogic practice to create transformational change in the pursuit of equity and justice. After narrowly avoiding a car accident in a parking lot one day, Angie Freeman (they/them) reflects on how that experience, and their initial reaction in the moments before and after learning the other driver was Deaf, expanded their awareness of their unexamined privilege. The experience set them on a path to learn American Sign Language (ASL), learn more about the lived experiences of Deaf people, and sparked a journey of self-work to more deeply understand how privilege operates. This journey continues to inform their life and work today as a speaker and educator.   Angie also shares an example from their experiences as a Black, trans, and nonbinary parent that speaks to the importance of teaching children the expansiveness of gender identity and family structures from a young age.  Their storytelling invites us to start with ourselves, to focus on deconstructing the misinformation that’s reflected through our privileged identities, and to use the power we have in service of equity and justice.
