One evening, Josh Williams sat on the edge of his bed, gun in hand, and contemplated ending his life. “I was in a pit of despair that I can’t describe to you,” Williams said in his interview on “The Signal Sitdown.” After hearing some terrible news from doctors regarding a traumatic workplace injury, Williams had told his then-wife to take the kids to the store. “I sat on the edge of my bed with my gun, and I was ready to kill myself. And I wrote out my suicide note.” William’s three-year-old son, however, was left behind. Before Williams succumbed to despair and ended his life, his son walked in the room and said “Daddy, I’m hungry.” “I tucked my gun away, and I grabbed my kid, and I cried,” Williams said. “Man, I cried for hours.” When his wife returned home, Williams confronted her about leaving their three-year-old behind. “She said something kept telling her to leave him behind,” Williams recalled. “She couldn’t explain it.” “Now, later on, I know that was God working in his own mysterious ways, that he sent one of his foot soldiers in that day to save my life because he had a bigger assignment for me,” Williams told The Daily Signal. The worst thing that has ever happened to the Capitol Building? “Air conditioning,” says Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn. Burchett joined ”The Signal Sitdown” at the Republican Study Committee's new media row to discuss how a group he calls the “war pimps” came to dominate Washington—and what he’s doing to try to stop them. Installing air conditioning in the Capitol, Burchett said, gave members of Congress the wrong impression: “These guys think they need to be year round,” he said, “I do more work when I'm at home, brother. The question top of mind in Washington, D.C. right now is what is the United States trying to get out of ongoing operations in Venezuela?  Very rarely is it the case that the question occupying minds on Capitol Hill and in think tanks is the same question everyday Americans are asking. But what’s happening between America and Venezuela right now is a rare exception.  A recent CBS/YouGov poll found that 76% of Americans believe the administration needs to explain its position on the use of military force in Venezuela. The same poll found that 53% are in support of the strikes against the narco-terrorists looking to bring drugs into the United States, but 70% of Americans are against taking military action in Venezuela. On Tuesday, Trump told reporters at a cabinet meeting that "we're going to start doing those strikes on land” in Venezuela, too. The horrific slaughter of Christians in Nigeria has caught the attention of President Donald Trump and the United States government. Trump has tapped Rep. California voters greenlit Gov. Gavin Newsom’s war against President Donald Trump for control in the 2026 midterms.  Voters in California approved of Proposition 50, a ballot measure that allows Newsom and Democrats to take control of redistricting from the state’s independent commission, by an overwhelming margin—nearly 2-to-1. Democrat victory in the Proposition 50 fight, not to mention the other off-year elections, is the Left’s strongest sally yet in what has become known as the redistricting wars. Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation, joins “The Signal Sitdown” to discuss. “What Prop 50 does is it temporarily takes away the power from the independent redistricting commission to draw up congressional districts so the Legislature can do it, and they're going to use that power to redraw the congressional districts,” von Spakovsky told The Daily Signal. A 2008 referendum first established the independent redistricting commission that California voters rejected Tuesday. For the past half decade or more, conservative intellectuals have tried to answer the question: Where did woke come from?  Some believe it is rebranded cultural Marxism. Others say it came from academia with the postmodern rejection of objective truth ultimately leading to the weaponization of culture. Maybe it came from the global corporations because woke is the ideology of the new managerial elite in late-stage neo-liberalism. But perhaps “woke” and its offspring like “cancel culture” came from something called “The Great Feminization.”  Helen Andrews, author of “Boomers: The Men and Women Who Promised Freedom and Delivered Disaster,” recently wrote an essay called “The Great Feminization,” a term borrowed from the pseudonymous online writer J Stone, that explains how “woke” is “an epiphenomenon of demographic feminization.” She joins “The Signal Sitdown” this week to discuss. “We had a big fight called feminism in the 1970s over whether or not we thought women could be lawyers. While President Donald Trump did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize this year, he could be the odds on favorite to win the distinguished award in 2026 because of his work brokering peace deals or ceasefires in eight different conflicts this year.  Trump’s deal-making diplomacy comes as left-wing critics thought this level of success impossible because of Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s efforts to completely reform the State Department. The critics were wrong.  State Department Deputy Spokesman Tommy Pigott joins “The Signal Sitdown” to provide an inside look at the State Department overhaul and how Trump has managed to find pathways to peace all over the world. The Biden administration’s poor prioritization of America and its interests was painfully on display inside the State Department that Trump and Rubio inherited. Things were so bad, in fact, that Trump’s political appointees had a difficult time simply tracking down just how many people actually worked for the state department. There’s no end in sight for the current government shutdown, which entered its third week on Wednesday. While Democrats are clinging to their $1.5 trillion demands—and Republicans, for once, are refusing to capitulate—there has been a palpable shift in the government shutdown state of play. This week, Rep. Mike Haridopolos, R-Fla., joins “The Signal Sitdown” to discuss the evolving dynamics of shutdown politics. “Historically it should be a surprise,” that Democrats have opted to shut down the government, Haridopolos told The Daily Signal. “The Democrats historically have always got along with a clean [continuing resolution],” he added. That’s especially the case in recent history, as Democrats have voted upwards of a dozen times for a nearly identical continuing resolution that kept the government open and running on spending levels set during former President Joe Biden’s administration.  To add insult to injury, the continuing resolution that would last through Nov. 21 was negotiated by Republican and Democrat appropriators. “We negotiated this ahead of time,” Haridopolos told The Daily Signal. “[House Appropriations Chairman] Tom Cole sat down, of course, with the House appropriators and Democrat appropriators, and said, ‘We're going to have a clean [continuing resolution], what else do you need? We want to do it till January.” Democrats, however, wanted the continuing resolution to expire in November. “We acquiesced and said, ‘Okay, fine, November 21,’” Haridopolos continued. “We negotiated. The Democrats and their allies in the corporate media have been lying through their teeth about the government shutdown and their ridiculous demands to reopen the government. This week, Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., joins “The Signal Sitdown” to debunk the Left’s chosen narratives about the government shutdown. ”They're big mad about Donald Trump,” Johnson tells The Daily Signal. “That's the 'A' answer. The 'B' answer is that [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer has a base problem, and this is a base management exercise for him.” Johnson went on to explain why Schumer’s base pressured him into shutting down the government when the measures that the Senate is currently considering to end the shutdown are essentially appropriations levels set during the Biden administration, levels Congress voted to continue in March. “Chuck Schumer got rolled,” in that March funding battle, Johnson says. On Tuesday, the nomination of E.J. Antoni, the Chief Economist at The Heritage Foundation, to become the next Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was withdrawn. In his first long-form interview since his withdrawal, Antoni joins “The Signal Sitdown” for an inside look at life as a presidential nominee and the problems with our economic data that President Donald Trump is trying to solve. When Antoni met with the president in the Oval Office upon his nomination, the biggest piece of advice that Trump gave him was “always tell the truth.”  In the months since President Donald Trump nominated him for the position in August, Antoni has lived the unique life of a presidential nominee—constant meetings on Capitol Hill, continued preparation for the nominated role in the administration, and very little sleep. But, day after day, Antoni took the president’s words to heart and told Senators the hard truths about our economy and our economic data. Antoni explained why the BLS is in desperate need of reform, ”The problems were starting to surface, really, many, many years ago with things like people just not responding to government surveys anymore. There are few, if any, more qualified to talk about America’s scourge of left-wing violence and the organizations that commit it than Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon who heads the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. In the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University two weeks ago, President Donald Trump has activated his administration to confront these anarchists head on, going so far as to designate Antifa a “domestic terrorist organization.” For more than a decade prior to taking her post at the Department of Justice, Dhillon was suing Antifa members and institutions that suppressed free speech due to the threat of left-wing violence on behalf of clients across the country. The conservative movement lost “the best of us" last week after Charlie Kirk was assassinated for his conservative values and martyred for his unyielding faith in Jesus Christ.    Steve Deace, a BlazeTV host, joined “The Signal Sitdown” where he responded to the death of his personal friend and Turning Point USA founder.    Because Charlie was such a bright light, “the enemy wanted to take him out,” Deace said.     To honor Charlie’s memory, it’s time for conservatives to “get more aggressive,” Deace continued.    “We need to mourn, and it's OK to mourn," he said. "Frankly, his legacy demands that we do. “Personnel is policy” is an old truism in the conservative movement. After President Donald Trump won the 2024 election, one of the big question marks as he headed into his second term was whether or not those tasked with setting up his administration had fully appreciated that time-tested wisdom. In his first term, Trump saw his agenda undermined by deep state and Republican Party apparatchiks alike. That problem most clearly manifested at the top of the administration, with figures such as former National Security Advisor John Bolton, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley playing outsized roles. But the American Right’s personnel problem runs far deeper than the Cabinet. At every level, Trump was facing a shortage of staffers who believed in the president’s vision and were willing to enact it.  Nick Solheim co-founded American Moment with Saurabh Sharma and Jake Mercier in 2021 to solve this problem beyond just a second Trump term. The American dream is in crisis. A study published by Pew Research last year found that only 42% of adults under 50 say the American dream is still attainable. The belief is bipartisan: Only 38% of Democrats under 50 and 48% of Republicans under 50 believe it is possible to achieve the American dream. President Donald Trump felt the storm gathering. He turned heads when he descended down the golden escalator of Trump Tower in 2015 and thundered that “sadly, the American dream is dead.” He captured that lightning in a bottle not once but twice, observing that under former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris, “you don’t hear about the American dream anymore—it’s dead.” And what’s the American dream without the white picket fence? Generations of Americans have grown up believing that owning a home has been a key tenet of living the American dream, but homes are increasingly unaffordable. For this monumental task, Trump has tapped Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner. Turner joined “The Signal Sitdown” this week to discuss a housing crisis that isn’t just about houses—it’s about the soul of our homeland. One reason why young Americans and their families feel the American dream slipping away is the increasing unaffordability of a home for the average American. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the average house cost about three times the yearly median wage in America. Today, the average house costs seven times the yearly median wage. Notre Dame Professor Patrick Deneen’s book, “Why Liberalism Failed,” was not a project undertaken to explain the Trump phenomenon after President Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the 2016 election. Nevertheless, it quickly entered the panoply of books, with Vice President JD Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy” among them, that provided insight into a new era of not only American but Western politics. The book’s success, even featured on former President Barack Obama’s list of recommended books, catapulted Deneen to one of the most prominent academic figures in the West and his ideas to the forefront of America’s most contentious political debates. Much has happened in the years since “Why Liberalism Failed” was published. Liberalism managed to claw back power, first through undermining Trump’s agenda at almost every turn from within, and then through the empty vessel of former President Joe Biden. Yet, Trump was able to mount a surprising return in 2024 with a new resolve to dismantle the forces of liberalism concentrated in Washington, D.C. You may not have ever heard the name of a man who was among the most profound intellectuals of the modern conservative movement in America. Frank S. Meyer was the man who came up with the idea of fusionism, an alliance between traditionalists and libertarians that underpinned the anti-communist bloc that composed the American Right for the latter half of the 20th century. Ironically enough, Meyer first came up with the idea of fusionism when he was an out-and-proud Communist, though he initially used the term as a unification of the American Founding and communist ideas a la Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States.”  Daniel Flynn, a Hoover Institute fellow and senior editor of “The American Spectator,” has spent the last few years writing a new biography of Meyer called “The Man Who Invented Conservatism.” His book brings to light new documents and information about Meyer’s life previously unknown, and he joined “The Signal Sitdown” to discuss the man-turned-missing-link in the conservative movement. Two months ago, violent riots broke out in America’s second largest city after immigration enforcement officers served legal warrants, signed by a judge, to individuals in this country illegally.  The rioters, which the media assured you were ‘mostly peaceful,’ laid siege to federal buildings, attacked law enforcement officers, lit cop cars on fire, and looted businesses for days—all while flying the flag of a foreign country. Of course, we’re talking about the Los Angeles riots, so we’ll let you guess what flag they were flying. These anarchists seemed well organized and well funded. Things got so out of control in Los Angeles, in fact, that the president called in 2,000 national guardsmen and hundreds of Marines. Yet, somehow, just two months later, the country has completely moved on. But it’s really worth reflecting on the LA riots and what inspired them because if anarchists can destroy city blocks under a foreign flag, you actually don’t have a sovereign country. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons comes on "The Signal Sitdown" this week to do just that. Lyons is an Air Force veteran with over 25 years of law enforcement experience, and almost 20 of those years have been with ICE. He knows what he’s talking about when it comes to enforcing federal law. And for Lyons and the agents under his command, the LA riots were just the tip of the iceberg.
