Rock N LOL

We sat down with Kat Rivers to discuss her band, her experience in the Philly music scene, her French horn toting dad, and many more critical topics. Plus we play a new game "What the Vedder". All this and more on the podcast that explores the Philadelphia rock and standup communities. 

We are back with Season 2 of the Rock n LOL Podcast. This week's guest is comic Bradford Davis. We talk about his open mic that was canceled when management made certain topics off limits. We discuss Jimmy Kimmel's recent suspension, and a bit of the history of censorship in comedy.  Plus Chris finally puts his legal degree to good use with a dfiscussion of some landmark First Amendment cases that affect comedy and art in general. 

We return after a hiatus as we plan for the first ever Rock n LOL Fest on August 23 and 24 at The Gem in Spring City, PA.  This week we are joined by musical guest DelCobras, part of the greater Sacred Monsters Multiverse with Nick on drums. DelCobras is a pop punk, Philly-centric band with deep roots in the Philly music community. We talk about the evolution of DelCobras from its origins as Scoopski, we talk internet social media presence, and we delve deeply into Nick's brain, a mysterious place. 

Faint Halos joined us this week to talk about the band's journey which started during the pandemic. We talk about the creative process, getekeeping in Philly music, and Kid Rock Airlines. With a Wilco vibe, and a desire to create more community and get more people out to live shows, Paul talks about how the band has evolved in just a short time. Catch them wherever you stream music!

We are joined by Julie's Nonna because, well, it's our podcast and we do what we want. But ladies and gentlement, you are in for a treat. We covered everythign from T Swift to the McRib, to Nonna's monk boyfriend, to a budding romance between Chris and Nonna. There's just a lot to deal with in this episode. 

On this episode we meet Harrisburg area comic Dom Driscoll. He talks about his need to be heard and what drew him to standup. We talk about his van adventures, working in "da club", and hear from an amazing storyteller. Dom will be on the Lehigh Valley's Funniest show with Chris at Emmaus Theater on June 26. His van show will return this summer! Julie is fresh off releasing new music with Gun-Shy Butterfly. Catch the band's first show, and see Sacred Monsters too, on July 11 at Tin Can Bar. 

We make amends this week for calling Matt from the Ditches "Dan" from the Ditches. There's a deep discussion about the Burger King long chicken sandwich you won't want to miss. What can we say about this episode with Comic Eric Preston? We covered so much ground. Julie, your favorite co-host, is a guest for this episode. She and her bandmate Andrea formed Gun-Shy Butterfly last year and have been making a ton of music since. This is their first appearance on a podcast, and we will talk about this very unique musical partnership. Plus, debut two songs, (that's right, WORLD PREMIERS) off GSB's upcoming EP. Special thanks to Karen Schwarz who stepped in as cohost with Chris this week!

New format! We changed it up a little. Now you get to hear from us for a full episode every other week. This week, we talk about everything important with rock and comedy, especially Panera's seasonal soup offerings. Chris takes you through his first every standup set, and Julie takes you throught the beginning of the evolution of a song. Oh, and we discuss Katy Perry launching into the heavens on the world's largest Hitachi Magic Wand. All this and more. 

Our favorite band, Sludge, is finally in the studio with us. We became fans of Sludge when they became super fans of the podcast. On this epsiode, we talk to these high school grunge rockers about their band, their experience performing, and how Sludge came to be. Chris and Julie, meanwhile, have tales of woe that include a baby firing from both ends, and a McDonald's bathroom encroachment. 

This week Julie and Chris went to see Sludge at their show at a store in Lansdowne called Rock n' Roll Knife Fight. We got the opportunity to talk to the store owner, Richie, and he is our guest this week. In Richie's words, Rock n' Roll Knife Fight is punk Walmart. You can find shirts, posters, stickers, and stuff you just won't find anywhere else in the area. We learned you'll also find an amazing community of "weirdos" that supports local music.  We mentioned Kenny Rayy on this episode (@kennyrayymusic on Instagram) and we were lucky enough to get to see her open for Sludge. Keep an eye open, she might be on one of our future shows.

Sam from Rescue Pets joins us this week to talk about her journey to putting out her own music and the vulbnerability that entails. Sam was a huge reason we ended up at the Gem and we talk about how we failed her as a friend. We are also treated to Julie's favorite Rescue Pets tune, "Orbit" and the premier of "Hands and Knees". 

Bobby was a Mormon in the Navy in a landlocked state. How's that for an opener. Our guest this week performs in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Bobby talks about growing up without coffee, living in Kentucky, and escaping zombies at a private compound. He also talks about the difficulty creating opportunities for comics, runnign open mics, and running comedy shows, while trying to find the time for your own comedy.  Reminder, we have a great comedy lineup at the Gem in Spring City, PA on April 17 featuring TaTa Sherise, Romy Rosner, Walker Britt, and hosted by Karen Schwarz.

Steph is a local musician who has been with her band, Midheaven, since the early 2000s. She's also a childhood (and current) dfriend of cohost Julie Exter. Steph talks about her music, and her musical start with Julie. Not only are we sure that Steph will survive a zombie apocalypse, we are also sure that God's Hippie Bus needs to be recorded. Just listen. You'll see.

Comic Tata Sherise, this year's Phillie's Phunniest Winner was our guest this week. We explored the hard hitting topics regarding the Philadelphia comedy commynity including whether it smells like cheese at a swinger's club, what it's like to Crip Walk with Jim Gaffigan, and why you always want to get the titties out of the way.  We also discuss last week's comedy show at the Gem, Sacred Monsters shows in State College, and a very special announcement about our next comedy show at the Gem on April 17!

Eric was one of Chris's first comedy friends. And let's face it, he is one of Chris's only friends. Eric started comedy with the mindset that you have to create your own opportunities and that you can do that while building community.
