This episode is part of my Luke Up series which celebrates James Gunn's Superman film and I’m thrilled to be joined by the amazing Trevor Newlin. Mr Handsome!
Trevor is a talented creature actor who’s brought some unforgettable characters to life — including a Wookiee, a Xenomorph, and most recently, the scene-stealing Mr. Handsome in Superman. We chat about his journey from theatre in Texas to the world of big-screen movie monsters, and how a life-changing moment with Doug Jones helped launch his career in suit performance.
He shares stories from the set, the creative process behind Mr. Handsome, and what it felt like when James Gunn himself praised his performance (yes — Groot comparisons were made!).
This episode is full of heart, laughs, and a behind-the-scenes look at the magic of practical effects, collaboration, and why Mr. Handsome might just be the most comfortable creature suit ever made.
I loved this conversation, and I hope you do too — let’s Luke Up and fly into another Superman adventure!

In this very special episode, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with the incredibly talented artist Howie Noel—someone whose love for Superman shines through in every piece of art he creates. We talked about his creative journey, the deeply personal experiences that fuel his work, and how a childhood love of Superman turned into something truly magical.
One of my favourite moments? Hearing how James Gunn himself saw Howie’s Superman artwork and shared it. As fans, we dream of moments like that—and for Howie, it was a beautiful reminder that our passions can reach people in ways we never expect.
We also spoke about what Superman means to us, why fan art matters, and how storytelling shapes the legacy of our heroes. It’s an honest, emotional, and uplifting conversation about art, fandom, and finding your place in a world full of capes, hope, and heart.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be sharing this episode with you. It’s something really special — a conversation I recorded a few years ago with the incredible Mark Waid. For a long time, I honestly thought this recording was gone forever… but recently, I stumbled across it, and it felt like finding a lost treasure.
Mark Waid has had such a huge impact on my love for comics, especially Superman. His stories — from Kingdom Come to Birthright — helped shape how I see these characters and what they stand for. In this chat, we talk about all of that: his creative process, his deep understanding of Superman, the evolution of Lex Luthor, and the emotional power of Lois Lane. But more than that, we talk about why these stories matter — and why they stay with us.
This conversation meant the world to me when we recorded it, and somehow, it means even more now. So, wherever you are, I hope you can settle in, take a moment, and enjoy this heartfelt conversation with one of the true legends of comics.
Thanks for tuning in to The Podcast of Steel. If this episode lifted your spirits, sparked your curiosity, or reminded you why we look up to heroes like Superman, I’d be so grateful if you could leave a review, give it a rating, and subscribe wherever you’re listening.
Every share, every comment, every click of that follow button helps this podcast soar a little higher. Together, we can keep spreading the messages of hope, strength, and truth — the very things Superman stands for. So until next time… stay strong, stay kind, and keep looking up.

It’s Superman Day, and as always, my cape is metaphorically (and sometimes literally) on. I’m Luke Bugg, also known as The Geek of Steel, and today I want to celebrate not just the Man of Steel himself, but the incredible journey I’ve had as a Superman fan.
My love for Superman didn’t start in the pages of a comic—it began with Smallville. That show lit a spark in me. Watching Clark Kent grow, struggle, and eventually step into his power was inspiring. That journey pulled me in and never let go. What started as a curiosity quickly turned into a full-blown passion, one that eventually led me to create The Geek of Steel—a place where I could share my love for the Last Son of Krypton with the world.
Over the years, this passion has taken me on some truly unforgettable adventures. I’ve been lucky enough to attend comic conventions, meet some of the incredible actors, writers, and artists who bring these stories to life, and most importantly, I’ve connected with a global community of fans who feel just as strongly as I do.
Being part of this fandom has changed my life. It’s helped me grow, given me purpose, and shown me the power of embracing who you are and what you love. That’s what Superman is about for me—hope, strength, kindness, and the courage to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard.
I’ve had the honour of being a voice for this community, and through Superman-related projects, I’ve formed emotional connections that go far deeper than just being a fan. There’s something truly powerful about the way stories—whether told in comics, books, films, or TV—can offer hope, escapism, and inspiration when we need it most.
As I look forward to what’s next—new Superman stories, films, and moments to “geek out”over—I also take a moment to look back. I reflect on the legacy of Superman, the incredible creators who brought him into the world, and what he continues to mean to people everywhere.
Superman means a lot to me. He’s more than just a hero in a cape—he’s a symbol of what we can all strive to be. And on Superman Day, I’m filled with nothing but gratitude. Gratitude for this community, for the opportunities I’ve had, and for the joy of being part of a fandom that truly feels like home.
Up, up, and away.
