Welcome to The [Inclusion] Conversation Podcast! Our guest this episode is Shelise Keum Mee Gieseke, educator, editor, and mentor, in conversation with our host, Grace Yung Foster. We are thrilled to close National Adoptee Awareness Month (#NAAM) with Shelise's voice and story. Her experience and perspective is a great way to wrap up this important month to elevate Adoptees and our narratives in a topic area we don't discuss enough - the workplace and job searching as an Adoptee. This podcast dives into the world of work, careers, and life for Adoptees, Fosters, our allies, parents, child welfare professionals, policy experts, and all within the Adoptee and Foster's orbit.Shelise has been involved in the adoption community for over a decade as an educator, editor, and mentor, including working at Adoption Mosaic as the Head of Operations until earlier this year, and now as a Course Facilitator, and also had the honor of editing the blog Land of Gazillion Adoptees and the Gazillion Voices online magazine.Shelise is an intercountry, South Korean, interracial adoptee. She was adopted as an infant and raised by a white family in Minnesota. She has three siblings who are her parents’ biological children. She has been to Korea to search for her family, but did not find them. In her free time she likes to watch k-dramas, go to taekwondo with her family, and pretend she is going to learn to speak Korean. We dive into Shelise’s journey as an Adoptee, her experiences as a person working in the Adoptee space and how she;s evolved, and not as a person who is job searching and what that is like for her as an Adoptee, and why we need resources like The Inclusion Initiative for this very reason - to support Adoptees and Fosters as they navigate the world of work. We end the show with “Rapid Fire” questions which brings levity and also some fun facts about our guest. This is an incredible episode and we hope you enjoy learning about our guest. She shares about her breakthrough policy work within the child welfare system in NY, and her many years of service in advocating for and legally representing Adoptees and Fosters who have been abandoned by their adoptive families - including those who experience formal and informal broken adoptions. One high-profile case she is involved in litigating is the case of Jonah Bevin, adopted son of Matt and Glenna Bevin. Matt Bevin is the former governor of Kentucky. The couple adopted Jonah from Ethiopia when he was five years old, and Jonah says he was abandoned by them when they sent him to a boarding school in Jamaica and stranded him there when the boarding school shut down, never coming to pick him up or helping him get back home. Jonah is one of hundreds of Adoptees that Dawn has represented and supported throughout her career. Dawn also talk about what we can do, how we can be allies, and the small steps of support that make a big difference. She urges us to take action and hold systems, institutions, and people accountable so that innocent and vulnerable youth in the adoption and foster care systems are treated fairly, humanely, and are seen as real people. We end the show with “Rapid Fire” questions which brings levity and also some fun facts about our guest. Welcome to The [Inclusion] Conversation Podcast!
We hope you enjoy this replay episode with former NFL athlete and Foster Alum, Gaelin Elmore. This conversation is relevant for the holiday season as so many Adoptees and Fosters struggle with the concept, and feeling, of truely belonging. This can be hard at home, in their communities, at work, and it especially can be hard to feel within their adoptive or foster families during this time.
This podcast dives into the world of work, careers, and life for Adoptees, Foster Care Alumni, our allies, parents, child welfare professionals, policy experts, and all within the Adoptee and Foster's orbit.
This episode features Gaelin Elmore, Keynote Speaker, Trainer, Consultant in conversation with our Founder & CEO, Grace Yung Foster, who is also the host of the show.
During this episode, we talk about Gaelin's story and journey, the complexities for Adoptees and Fosters around the idea and feeling of belonging, what allies can do, the dominant narratives of adoption/foster care and why they are harmful. Gaelin shares his wisdom, framework, and knowledge with us regarding how we can find a pathway to belonging, and the real work it takes to get there, no matter your environment.
