Kelly calls Josh early in the morning, waking him up with her cheerful voice. They chat for a while, sharing small talk about life, and Josh is reminded of the strange connection they’ve shared for a while—both of them have eerily realistic, almost shared dreams. Kelly talks about her plans, expressing her passion for becoming a counselor someday, and how she wants to help others the way she wishes she could’ve been helped. As the conversation flows naturally, it’s easy to forget where Kelly is calling from. Just as Josh starts to relax, there’s a sudden pause, and Kelly says, “I have to go—they’re doing count.” It’s only then that reality hits—Kelly is calling from prison, and the brief, warm moment is cut short by the strict prison security policy. The call ends abruptly, leaving Josh staring at the phone, reminded of the distance between them despite how close they feel.
Josh and Kelly met through a social media group and quickly bonded. He never judged her, each sharing a strange connection—having the same vivid, identical dreams every night. The dreams felt too real to be a coincidence, like they were together. One day, Kelly said, “You need to see me.” Without hesitation, Josh packed his bags, feeling drawn to her, knowing something deeper was happening between them.
During their first face-to-face visitation, Kelly drops a bombshell—she’s pregnant. Somehow. She can’t explain it. The pregnancy seems impossible, especially since it happened after she was already in custody, and nothing occurred while she’s been inside. The mystery of it all leaves Josh stunned. As they talk, he notices the guards and other inmates eyeing her suspiciously, as if they, too, are aware something isn’t right. Kelly’s words hang heavy in the air, and Josh is left grappling with the impossibility of it all.
In their second visit, Kelly looks more anxious. She tells Josh that DNA testing and an investigation are underway to rule out any foul play. The uncertainty hangs over them like a dark cloud. Kelly confesses something even more unsettling—she feels like the baby knows more than she does, like it’s connected to something beyond her understanding. Her biggest fear now isn’t just the mystery surrounding the pregnancy, but the possibility of losing the baby permanently to the state. The stakes feel impossibly high, and both of them are left wondering what’s really going on.
Josh is confused. He’s had no physical contact with Kelly, yet DNA tests show he’s the father. It makes no sense. Kelly sends a message congratulating him, but Josh is torn—either it’s a miracle, or someone is scheming. He doesn’t know what to believe.
A satanic cult gathers, alarmed by rumors of an immaculate conception. They fear the birth of another messiah, especially with the presence of “creator DNA” mixed with Josh’s. Convinced this child threatens their plans, they begin plotting an attack on Kelly, using their influence to send minions within the prison to eliminate her and the unborn baby before it’s too late.
Months later, Kelly gives birth to a baby girl, and Josh visits, still confused. Father McCaffrey, sensing something ancient in the child, acknowledges Josh as the father and accepts the idea of an immaculate conception. He has no issue with the notion that a messianic child could be female, while Kelly avoids confronting her past. Despite the mystery, McCaffrey believes the child is destined for something extraordinary.
Whispers circulate about DNA specimens being switched, and suspicions arise that Kelly’s ex, who visited months ago, might be the real father. Sensing growing tension, Father McCaffrey and Kelly fear an impending confrontation. In a rush one night, with tensions rising, they flee the nursery, taking the baby to an old, unused chapel to keep her safe. In doing so, they narrowly avoid a deadly attack, escaping both danger and the mounting suspicions.
Father McCaffrey begins to question the DNA results, suspecting something is wrong. He confronts Kelly about her ex, but she denies any romantic involvement. Meanwhile, the state accepts the DNA tests, clearing them of any wrongdoing. However, under state law, Kelly may be forced to surrender the child. To protect her, the prison plans to transfer Kelly to another facility, believing she could be a divine mother. At the same time, the Vatican becomes deeply interested, intrigued by the miraculous combination of Josh’s DNA with “creator DNA.” The situation intensifies as Rome views the child’s birth as something extraordinary.
Handing over the baby to the state is a painful moment for Kelly. The Vatican, however, offers her freedom—but at a cost. Father McCaffrey confronts her, urging her to make peace with the truth and what has happened. Kelly is torn, worried about Josh paying the price for everything. McCaffrey reassures her, saying, “God provides.” Later, Kelly meets with a Vatican representative, Ms. Toscano, and wrestles with the decision. She wonders if she’s just trading one prison for another, as the Vatican requires her to make public appearances as part of her role as a “sacred mother.” Tosano reassures her, promising better conditions and a chance to be reunited with her daughter. But the title comes with responsibility—being a sacred mother is not without its obligations.
Kelly’s ex, Timmy, unexpectedly shows up and mocks her new title as the “sacred mother,” accusing her of scheming to get attention and money. He sneers, suggesting she’s playing a role for profit, and hints at a past indiscretion that could unravel everything. His threats linger, making it clear that he’s willing to expose whatever secrets Kelly might be hiding, potentially destroying the delicate situation she’s found herself in with the Vatican and the state. Kelly, cornered by his accusations, feels the weight of her past creeping up on her, threatening to ruin everything.
Josh grapples with shocking revelations about Kelly, an inmate he’s been corresponding with. DNA tests reveal he’s the father of her unborn child, despite them never meeting, and the presence of a mysterious strain hints at divine origins. As the Vatican takes interest, Kelly’s past with her ex, Timmy, adds tension and mystery. Josh consults lawyer Charles McSweeney, who plans further DNA testing to uncover the truth, while Kelly meets with Father McCaffrey and Vatican representative Toscano, who offer her support but seek assurance of the child’s origins.
In this episode of Penpals, Kelly gives birth under mysterious circumstances, and DNA tests reveal her penpal Josh as the child’s father, along with traces of primal DNA that attract the Vatican’s interest. They see Kelly as a sacred mother destined to confront dark forces that threaten her and her child. Meanwhile, her ex, Timmy, attempts to undermine her connection with the Vatican, while shadowy figures plot to exploit Josh’s doubts about his role in Kelly’s life. In a dark room, these figures conspire to manipulate Josh and isolate Kelly, aiming to keep them apart and prevent Kelly from becoming a rallying point due to her powerful connection to the primal DNA. The episode culminates with the narrator highlighting the precariousness of Kelly and Josh’s future as they face impending threats.
Kelly, an inmate, finds herself in a divine mystery as she becomes pregnant without physical contact, sharing vivid dreams and DNA with Josh, a man outside. The courtroom reveals baffling DNA test results: while Timmy, Kelly’s ex, is confirmed as the biological father, traces of Josh’s DNA, along with a primordial or creator DNA, also appear. With Timmy smugly claiming Kelly as his, the judge agrees to suspend support orders, until the matter is clarified. But true paternity remains unresolved.
After the court’s ambiguous DNA ruling, Josh is temporarily off the hook for Kelly’s child, while biological father Timmy—the ex who was around at the time—brags about his indiscretion and threatens to involve the Vatican, stirring up even more questions. Despite no physical contact, traces of Josh’s DNA remain through letters and calls, alongside a mysterious celestial DNA. Confronting Timmy in the courthouse hallway, Josh challenges him on his lack of care for Kelly. Timmy shrugs off responsibility, leaving Josh to grapple with his own commitment to her as he walks away, unsure if he’s truly ready to move on.
