When we look at the news right now — Iran, the airports, the corruption, the measles — it's tempting to decide none of it matters because, individually, we can't fix any of it. Nihilism is tempting, and we talk about how sometimes nihilism represents pride, but maybe in the right dose, it’s more like humility. Either way, “nothing matters” is being proven wrong every day. Special elections are producing surprising results. Courts are holding tech companies accountable. And people are figuring it out when institutions fail (I’m especially moved by the story of an underground railroad set up to bring Ukrainian children home from Russia). I say in this episode that my emotional cocktail has a splash of nihilism in it. But the main ingredient is my conviction that our attention and our care and our efforts make a difference.  Plus: please clap for my favorite segue in the history of Pantsuit Politics. From: “perhaps we aren’t sleepwalking into a dystopian nightmare” to “are we in a smut renaissance?” facilitated by the shelving of an erotic chatbot. If this doesn’t end your Friday with joy, I don’t know what will. -Beth   Topics Discussed: Nihilism is Having A Moment  Signs of Hope Outside of Politics: Smut Renaissance Join us in Minneapolis for our live show this August! The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not give President Trump the authority to impose sweeping global tariffs. Sarah and Beth discuss how the tariff case is just one piece of a bigger and more troubling economic picture: a weakening dollar, a bond market under pressure, and a private credit sector showing signs of serious stress. There’s a theme in today’s episode of holding the breath, which is something I’ve been doing about unrest and possible US military action in Iran. Sarah and I discuss reporting that the administration seems increasingly likely to take what they term “kinetic” action (and what Reps. Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie and Senators Tim Kaine and Rand Paul would call acts of war).  Then there’s the way that our guest and friend Natalia Terfa describes holding her breath in Minneapolis. Even as Operation Metro Surge “winds down,” there are still agents and agitators. There is still fear and tension. There is damage left to repair after “it’s over,” and a sense that it’s not really over yet. We’re grateful to Natalia for her leadership on the ground and her willingness to discuss it with us today.  We often talk about outside of politics as an exhale, and we hope it is today. We talk about our very-non-sports-y Winter Olympics takes, with a special shout out to all of you who participated in the Spice Cabinet Opening Ceremonies.  If you’ve listened for a long time, you know that I love yoga. One of my favorite parts of a yoga class is taking a collective breath. It reminds me that we’re here. We’re alive, right now, and that’s its own form of miracle. It reminds me that we’re not alone. I hope this episode gives you that sense, too. -Beth  Topics Discussed: Unrest in Iran and Potential Military Action  On the Ground in Minneapolis with Natalia Terfa Outside of Politics: The Winter Olympics Ready to go deeper? Today, we're discussing the latest instance of large companies pre-emptively caving to the Trump Administration: Stephen Colbert's blocked interview with Texas Senate candidate James Tallarico. With that backdrop, the House of Representatives passed the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. Sarah and Beth discuss why this is a conversation about voter suppression disguised as election integrity. Next, we discuss the standoff between Anthropic and the Department of Defense over the use of Claude in military operations and domestic surveillance. Outside of politics, Sarah and Beth answer a listener's question about astrology and what it means to hold those frameworks loosely in an age of data and critical thinking. I was a legal secretary and I assumed I would go to law school at some point but I'd had to be an Alan Alda and one of my bosses was like that and her life was miserable I thought.

Beth and Sarah, Thank you so much for today's podcast! I live in the Quad Cities (Iowa) and am a proud Democrat. I was precinct captain for Warren at my caucus Monday night. It was so discouraging the rest of the week to listen to all of the podcasts that I typically listen to and hear all of the disgust and disappointment about Iowa. My husband and I are very, very busy people. We both work full time, we have 2 biological children, and we fostered to adopt 6 additional children. I make it a priority for not only myself but my children as well to learn about politics and democracy and how we can make our world a better place. My 13 year old daughter told me on Tuesday that there were so many memes on Facebook making fun of Iowans and she said that she now believes that Iowans votes don't count. Even Bernie Sanders made fun of the fact that "Iowans can't count but New Hampshire people sure can" at a recent rally. As we are going to and from band, play rehearsals, etc, we have been li

i dont see the contrast...its a hillary democrat and a gw bush repub. theyre the same thing except for regional diffs. they govern on visceral emotion and will bow to popular opinion/media pressure. the repub slightly reactionary, the hill dem adjusts policies with every poll

This podcast is very much in the vein of NPR's "Left, Right, and Center." That is to say that, much like LRC, it claims to offer more than 1 POV yet seems to be able to deliver anything but. These 2 ladies are clearly both from the Left, so am wondering why the deception??? Just own it.
