There’s a theme in today’s episode of holding the breath, which is something I’ve been doing about unrest and possible US military action in Iran. Sarah and I discuss reporting that the administration seems increasingly likely to take what they term “kinetic” action (and what Reps. Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie and Senators Tim Kaine and Rand Paul would call acts of war).  Then there’s the way that our guest and friend Natalia Terfa describes holding her breath in Minneapolis. Even as Operation Metro Surge “winds down,” there are still agents and agitators. There is still fear and tension. There is damage left to repair after “it’s over,” and a sense that it’s not really over yet. We’re grateful to Natalia for her leadership on the ground and her willingness to discuss it with us today.  We often talk about outside of politics as an exhale, and we hope it is today. We talk about our very-non-sports-y Winter Olympics takes, with a special shout out to all of you who participated in the Spice Cabinet Opening Ceremonies.  If you’ve listened for a long time, you know that I love yoga. One of my favorite parts of a yoga class is taking a collective breath. It reminds me that we’re here. We’re alive, right now, and that’s its own form of miracle. It reminds me that we’re not alone. I hope this episode gives you that sense, too. -Beth  Topics Discussed: Unrest in Iran and Potential Military Action  On the Ground in Minneapolis with Natalia Terfa Outside of Politics: The Winter Olympics Ready to go deeper? Today, we're discussing the latest instance of large companies pre-emptively caving to the Trump Administration: Stephen Colbert's blocked interview with Texas Senate candidate James Tallarico. With that backdrop, the House of Representatives passed the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. Sarah and Beth discuss why this is a conversation about voter suppression disguised as election integrity. Next, we discuss the standoff between Anthropic and the Department of Defense over the use of Claude in military operations and domestic surveillance. Outside of politics, Sarah and Beth answer a listener's question about astrology and what it means to hold those frameworks loosely in an age of data and critical thinking. Why does support for Israel fuel antisemitism on the right, while criticism of Israel fuels it on the left? The Atlantic's Yair Rosenberg returns to explain what he calls the "no-win dynamic" of prejudice—where any argument can be twisted to justify hatred. Sarah and Beth talk with Yair about his recent research revealing a surprising generational shift: younger Americans are significantly more likely to express antisemitic views than older generations, and age matters more than political party. He unpacks why this is happening—from the fading memory of World War II to the culture of edginess and transgression online—and explains why it's so hard to distinguish "a punchline from a punch." The conversation also moves beyond Israel as symbol to Israel as actual country, exploring the upcoming election, Netanyahu's grip on power, the internal battles over university diversity programs and film funding, and why understanding these complexities matters for productive conversations about the Middle East. Beth and Sarah, Thank you so much for today's podcast! I live in the Quad Cities (Iowa) and am a proud Democrat. I was precinct captain for Warren at my caucus Monday night. It was so discouraging the rest of the week to listen to all of the podcasts that I typically listen to and hear all of the disgust and disappointment about Iowa. My husband and I are very, very busy people. We both work full time, we have 2 biological children, and we fostered to adopt 6 additional children. I make it a priority for not only myself but my children as well to learn about politics and democracy and how we can make our world a better place. My 13 year old daughter told me on Tuesday that there were so many memes on Facebook making fun of Iowans and she said that she now believes that Iowans votes don't count. Even Bernie Sanders made fun of the fact that "Iowans can't count but New Hampshire people sure can" at a recent rally. As we are going to and from band, play rehearsals, etc, we have been li

This podcast is very much in the vein of NPR's "Left, Right, and Center." That is to say that, much like LRC, it claims to offer more than 1 POV yet seems to be able to deliver anything but. These 2 ladies are clearly both from the Left, so am wondering why the deception??? Just own it.
