Matt Thune is set to begin his first season at the helm of the women's basketball program at the University of Alaska Anchorage.  We discuss his journey in coaching, his experiences in various programs,  coaching philosophy, recruitment strategies, and more. Growing up in Indiana, basketball was a significant part of Thune's life.  Knowing he wanted to coach from an early age, he took a chance heading to the University of Louisville for graduate school.  Then Jeff Walz took a chance on him during a highly successful era for the program, including a run to national championship game.  Thune compares working for Walz to getting a doctorate in basketball. He believes in recruiting players that fit his coaching style, and emphasizes the importance of building confidence in players. Thune's coaching philosophy focuses on a fast-paced, aggressive style of play mixed with good old fashion work ethic learned from his dad.  He's ready to showcase that brand of basketball in his first season with the Seawolves.   We appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! Steven Keene emerged from the vibrant folk scene of Greenwich Village in the late ’80s and early ’90s.  Influenced by songwriting greats like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Woody Guthrie, Keene earned a reputation for his raw, poetic lyricism and commitment to craft over fame. His early work led to collaborations with former Dylan band members, and after a hiatus, he returned with renewed urgency, releasing Them and Us and Woke, tackling modern social issues with lyrical precision.   His new album, Notice Me, blends timeless storytelling with pointed commentary. The record features “This World is Your World,” a modern take on a Woodie Gutherie classic and ‘Thesauras,’ a playful, rapid-fire tribute to his songwriting heroes , recently featured in Rolling Stone.  Keene lives in the same New Jersey town as Bruce Springsteen and has a stake in a distillery making bourbon, two things that make him especially suited as guest on this particular podcast.  stevenkeene.com Rolling Stone feature on 'Thesauras' Steven Keene Facebook Page Steven Keene - Apple Music 'Thesaurus' video   We appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! Steve Gorman is a founding member of the iconic American rock n’ roll band The Black Crowes. In 2011, Gorman launched a sports talk radio show in Nashville, ’Steve Gorman SPORTS!’ that was eventually picked up for a five year run on Fox Sports Radio. In 2019, Steve Gorman started his show, Steve Gorman Rocks! which can be found on stati0ns nation wide.  For the past two years he has also hosted Gorman in the Morning after a move to Minneapolis. Brad Estes is the new President of Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, joining the reigning USL Champions about six months ago after a short stint away from the game.  He brings with him years of top level experience at the helm of perennial USL power Louisville City.  While with the Louisville side, he saw the club’s parent company Soccer Holdings Inc. construct a new soccer specific stadium, launch an academy program, and secure and build NWSL franchise Racing Louisville from the ground up.  A well rounded athlete growing up, Estes played high school and college football, but his business acumen is what now sets him apart in the sports world. We discuss some of his wide ranging experiences prior to starting as a sports executive that have proven beneficial in building winners.  Colorado Springs senior team is fighting for a playoff spot in the jam packed Western Conference, and recently announced new signing Kyle Vassell, who they hope will provide some extra punch in front of goal.  Already having experience with a Unified team, they are also partners in fielding a squad in the first ever Inspire Soccer League for individuals with intellectual impairment.  There are plenty of good things going on in Colorado Springs!     We appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! Walt Wells is the Head Football Coach at Eastern Kentucky University. He is a veteran of the sidelines having served more than 20 years as both an offensive line coach and coordinator. Besides his stops at Eastern Kentucky, Wells has also spent time at South Florida, Western Kentucky, New Mexico State, Tennessee, and Kentucky.  He has won championships and Coach of the Year honors, but his biggest win came in 2022, surviving a heart attack during the opening week of the season, with a 95% blockage of his widow-maker.  The fact that Wells is alive to share the story, much less still coaching, is nothing short of a miracle.  As he puts it, if anyone from his staff, to the athletic trainers, to the EMTs or the doctors had been having a bad day, he wouldn’t be here.  Whether you’re a football fan or not, I suggest at least skipping ahead to around the 24-minute mark and listening to Wells recount the experience and share a dose of perspective.  For those of you that do need your football fix, we also have plenty of discussion about his coaching journey and influences, and a preview of the 2025 Eastern Kentucky Colonels.    We appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast! Trip Rogers, the new Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Transylvania University, joins for a fun conversation.  Rogers is a veteran of the college game, having coached at the Division I, II, and III levels in both the assistant and lead roles.   For the past three years Rogers has coached with one of his best friends in Jay Hoffman, the Head Coach at Centre College.  We explore that relationship and what the opportunity meant on both a professional and personal level.  Ultimately, the chance to return to his hometown of Lexington and lead the program at Transylvania was too much for Rogers to pass up.  That means putting together a staff and learning a new roster in short time.  We talk about what it looks like to get settled with about three weeks until preseason starts. And as two soccer guys who also love the links, we had to talk a little bit of golf as well.      We appreciate you listening to the Tinman Podcast!
