In the early nineteenth century, a stretch of upstate New York became one of the most spiritually charged regions in American history. Known as the Burned Over District, this frontier landscape was shaped by relentless revivals, bold preachers, and a growing belief that individuals could choose salvation and reshape society. In this episode of the History of the Papacy Podcast, Steve Guerra is joined by historian John Fagant of the Buffalo Presidential Center (https://www.buffalopresidentialcenter.org) to explore how the Second Great Awakening transformed western New York into a proving ground for religious innovation. At the center of the story is Charles Grandison Finney, whose revival campaigns challenged older ideas of predestination and emphasized free will, moral responsibility, and action. The conversation traces how revival culture spilled beyond churches into abolitionism, women’s rights, education reform, and other movements that continue to shape American public life. What began as a regional religious phenomenon became a national turning point in how Americans understood faith, authority, and reform. #HistoryOfThePapacy #BurnedOverDistrict #SecondGreatAwakening #AmericanReligiousHistory #ChurchHistory #BuffaloHistory #UpstateNewYork #ReligiousReform Support the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? Catholic immigration reshaped the early United States long before Ellis Island. This episode follows the people pulled into the new nation through shifting borders, and the millions pushed across the Atlantic by famine, poverty, political upheaval, and limited opportunity. From the French traders of the Old Northwest to Mexican Tejanos, from German radicals to Irish famine survivors, we explore how faith, identity, and movement transformed a rapidly expanding country. #HistoryPodcast #CatholicHistory #USHistory #IrishImmigration #GermanImmigration #TexasHistory #EarlyAmerica #PapacyPodcastSupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? From early canal towns to rapidly expanding industrial cities, in this episode, we are joined by fellow Buffalonian John Fagant, trustee of the Buffalo Presidential Center to explore how Catholic immigrants and clergy shaped American communities during a time of major growth. Using the story of frontier-era Buffalo as a case study, we follow how the Erie Canal, massive migration from Ireland and Germany, parish building, and rising nativism transformed both urban life and the Catholic Church. The episode also looks at church–state conflicts, public schooling debates, social tensions, and the national political landscape leading up to the Civil War. This is a great look at how movement, growth, and faith changed the landscape of the United States.Listen wherever you get your podcasts. #HistoryPodcast #CatholicHistory #EarlyAmerica #ImmigrationHistory #UrbanHistory #USHistory #PapacyPodcastwww.buffalopresidentialcenter.orgSupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? In this episode of The History of the Papacy Podcast, Steve Guerra sits down with historian Andrew Hartman, author of Karl Marx in America, to explore how the revolutionary thinker’s ideas collided with the realities of 19th-century America. From Marx’s reflections on slavery and labor to his unlikely connection with Abraham Lincoln, the discussion reveals how debates about freedom, democracy, and class defined the American experience. In this episode of our American Catholic History series, we explore the dramatic rise and lasting impact of Anti-Masonry in the early United States. The strange and haunting story of William Morgan's disappearance in 1826 set off a political wildfire, leading to the creation of the Anti-Masonic Party, the nation’s first third party. We’ll trace how this populist movement emerged out of fear of secret societies, clashed with Catholic ideas, and became a launching pad for major figures like William Wirt, Millard Fillmore, Thaddeus Stevens, and William Seward. Though Catholics and Anti-Masons shared deep suspicions about Freemasonry, their goals and values rarely aligned.#CatholicHistory #AntiMasonry #Freemasonry #AmericanHistory #SecretSocieties #Masons #WilliamMorgan #KnowNothingParty #CatholicPodcast #HistoryPodcast #AmericanCatholicism Support the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? How do you build a church in a land that doesn’t want you? In this episode, we follow the early development of the Catholic Church in the United States—from Maryland’s founding as a Catholic refuge to the challenges of worship in secret and organizing without bishops. At the center of it all is John Carroll, a Jesuit priest who would become the first bishop in American history. Through political suspicion, missionary improvisation, and internal conflict, Carroll and his fellow Catholics carved out space for faith in a revolutionary new republic. #CatholicHistory #JohnCarroll #AmericanCatholics #PapacyPodcast #HistoryPodcast #FoundingEra #ChurchAndState #USHistory #ReligiousFreedomSupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? The story of the Catholic Church in the United States doesn't begin in 1776, but that’s where this series picks up. In this opening episode, we trace the long and winding road of Catholicism in North America—from Norse Greenland to the shores of Florida and set the stage for the Church’s role in a new and rapidly changing nation. This episode also offers a sweeping overview of American history between the Revolution and the Civil War to give you context for what’s to come.#CatholicHistory #USHistory #HistoryPodcast #CatholicChurch #AmericanRevolution #CatholicsInAmerica #ChurchAndStateSupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? Before the American Revolution took off, a wealthy Virginian aristocrat named Philip Ludwell III made a bold and baffling decision—he became an Eastern Orthodox Christian. In an age where Catholicism was suspect and Protestant conformity was king, Ludwell’s journey into Orthodoxy was more than unusual—it was nearly unthinkable. In this special episode, we follow Ludwell’s story from Williamsburg to London, into the Orthodox Church, and through the tangled legacies of religion, property, slavery, and family that carried all the way to Texas and the Civil War. This is the forgotten story of the most unlikely Founding Father. #OrthodoxHistory #PhilipLudwell #AmericanReligiousHistory #EarlyAmerica #HistoryPodcast #PapacyPodcast #ColonialAmerica #OrthodoxChurch #FoundingFathersSupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacy Buy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8E Have questions, comments or feedback? This a well researched podcast, Steve is really trying to cover the topic in the most complete way possible, and the actual episodes are entertaining. However I'm sorry but I am unable to keep listening to it. In average, the proper episode doesn't start before 5 minutes in. First: the ads, obnoxious, loud, sometimes airing twice in a row, or starting abruptly in the middle of a sentence. Second : the sponsors, then the Agora plug, then the Patreon plug, then if there is a guest, some discussion about podcasting.. It's exhausting.
