🎙️ Ep 189 w/ Marie Walker - A Digital Nomad Reality Check: Marie’s Honest Story of Travel, Work & BurnoutIn this week’s episode, I sit down with my longtime podcasting friend and returning guest, Marie Walker, to pull back the curtain on what digital nomad life actually looks like. This is not a highlight reel. This is the real, messy, energising and exhausting truth of building a remote business while bouncing between continents. Marie opens up about leaving the USA with a plan, the crash-and-burn moments that forced her to return home, and the unexpected personal growth that came from rebuilding twice. We talk about the difference between backpacking and being a digital nomad, the pressure to stay productive while constantly uprooting your life, and the emotional toll of trying to create community in a new country every few months. Marie shares the honest lessons she’s learned from Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia and Korea, why she needed to end her 10-month trip early, and how burnout changed the way she approaches business, travel and lifestyle freedom. If you’re dreaming of working remotely around the world or already living the nomad lifestyle, this conversation gives you the reality check most digital nomad influencers skip. It’s raw, funny, vulnerable and full of valuable perspective from someone who has lived the ups and downs.Stick around to hear why Marie is now focused on rebuilding her foundations, where she’s heading next, and how she plans to approach digital nomad life differently moving forward. This episode is a must-listen for anyone considering taking their work on the road.Marie WalkerYour Girl Media - https://yourgirlmedia.com/Culture Cult Travel ShowApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/culture-cult-travel-show/id1603662928Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Gfk2meDfzfmJIxybvoE6cWant to travel with me to El Salvador? Magical Prague at Sunrise, My Cringe Oktoberfest Stories and Travel FitnessIn this week’s episode of Winging It Travel Podcast, I’m taking you through three very different parts of my travel life — the peaceful beauty of Prague at sunrise, the chaotic hilarity of my cringe Oktoberfest stories, and my personal reflections on something I call “travel fitness.”I start with my recent trip to Prague, one of Europe’s most enchanting cities. After a sleepless overnight flight from Vancouver, I landed just in time to experience something truly magical — the city waking up at dawn. With the sun rising over the Vltava River and not a tourist in sight, I wandered across the Charles Bridge, through the Old Town Square, and soaked in that golden early-morning glow that made the whole city feel timeless. It reminded me why I travel — those quiet, unplanned moments that make everything worth it.Then we move into a very different kind of travel experience — my cringe and hilarious Oktoberfest stories. I went to Oktoberfest for the first time back in 2014 at the end of my two-year backpacking trip, and to say it was messy would be an understatement. From falling off benches to accidentally soaking locals in beer, to somehow ending up cleaning my own disaster in a tent washroom — it was pure chaos. I also share what it was like to go back this year to meet some fellow travel creators, Chris and Sarah and Matt and Nat, and to see the festival from a slightly older (and more sober!) perspective. It’s a funny look back at my early travel days — the mistakes, the laughs, and the stories that stick with you forever. Finally, I wrap up with a reflection on something I’ve been thinking about lately — travel fitness. It’s not just about being physically fit; it’s about having the energy, curiosity, and adaptability to keep exploring day after day. After walking nearly 27,000 steps in Prague, I realised just how much “travel stamina” it takes to be on the move — from early mornings, long days, and constant new experiences. I share a few honest thoughts on how I try to keep that balance and stay ready for whatever comes next on the road. This episode is a mix of reflection, chaos, laughter, and travel insight — everything I love about sharing stories on this podcast. Whether you’re planning your next adventure, reminiscing about your own travel fails, or just dreaming of that next sunrise in a new city, I hope this episode inspires you to get out there and keep exploring.⏰ Episode Timestamps00:00 – Intro and what’s coming up in this episode01:10 – Why Prague blew me away at sunrise03:20 – First impressions of the city and staying on a boat hotel05:30 – Walking Prague’s empty streets and Charles Bridge at dawn08:00 – Meeting a fellow traveler and reflecting on Prague’s vibe10:30 – Travel tips: seeing Prague before the crowds11:00 – Heading to Oktoberfest and meeting YouTube travel creators12:45 – Throwback to my first Oktoberfest in 201415:00 – The infamous “bench collapse” story17:30 – Falling asleep at a Bayern Munich game19:40 – My worst Oktoberfest hangover ever21:30 – Revisiting Oktoberfest as an older, wiser traveler22:30 – What I’ve learned from embarrassing travel moments23:00 – Introducing “travel fitness” — my personal theory24:30 – Why travel stamina matters on long trips25:20 – Tips for building your travel fitness before your next adventure26:00 – Upcoming podcast news and future travel plans🔗 Links Mentioned🎥 Watch my vlogs on YouTube: a...

🎙 Why I Travel and Why You Should! – Revisited in 2025In this special episode of the Winging It Travel Podcast, I go back to where it all started—Episode One, recorded in early 2021. Back then, I shared my reasons for travelling, my biggest lessons on the road, and my advice for anyone thinking about packing a bag and exploring the world. Four years later, I’m revisiting those original thoughts to see if I still agree, if my perspective has shifted, or if I completely disagree with my younger self. From my predictions about post-COVID travel, to choosing Japan as my favourite country and Nepalese cuisine as my top food, to sharing stories from Mount Kinabalu and life on the road with no smartphone—this revisit is both a reflection and a reality check. I also revisit my advice for young travellers, my mindset about money and freedom, and my dream plans for campervan road trips across Canada, the USA, and Scotland.Whether you’re a long-time listener who’s been here since day one or a new traveller looking for inspiration, this episode is a time capsule of my journey and proof of how travel continues to shape me. If you’ve ever wondered why we travel, what we learn along the way, and how our perspectives evolve over time, this is the episode for you.🔔 Subscribe, leave a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review, and support the podcast via Buy Me A Coffee!Timetamps00:00 Revisiting the Past: A Time Capsule of Travel02:54 The Impact of COVID-19 on Travel05:49 Personal Journey: Who is James Hammond?08:38 Travel Experiences: Lessons Learned11:34 Travel Preferences: Favourites and Surprises14:51 Adventures and Challenges: Pushing Boundaries17:41 The Future of Travel: Generational Shifts20:39 The Evolution of Travel Goals and Mindset27:43 The Backpacker Vibe in Bangkok30:03 Living Without Technology: A Liberating Experience32:50 The Importance of Travelling Young36:12 Learning from Other Cultures39:06 Choosing the Hard Path: Embracing Challenges40:59 Future Travel Plans and Road Trips46:09 Comfort Foods and Culinary Adventures--------------------------------------------------------------Voyascape: Travel Podcast Network - https://voyascape.com/Winging It Travel Podcast - WebsitePlease leave a review and a 5-star rating wherever you get your podcasts!--------------------------------------------------------------Winging It Travel Podcast CreditsHost/Producer/Creator/Composer/Editor - James HammondContact me - jameshammondtravel@gmail.com Social Media - follow me on:InstagramTikTok Facebook --------------------------------------------------------------Support My Podcast - MembershipsPatreon - HereBuy Me A Coffee - HereAffiliate Links If you click one
