Join Kevin and Landen on this episode of hunting stories. Kevin share's an intense British Columbia mountain hunt that turned into an unforgettable adventure. What began as a remote goat hunt in the Kootenays quickly escalated: hurricane-force winds shredded a tent off the mountain, a massive Billy goat tumbled and lost a horn, and a surprise encounter with a grizzly bear guarding an elk carcass left a lasting mental image. Despite wild weather, sketchy terrain, and close calls in grizzly country, the trip wrapped with two mountain goats, a six-point bull elk on the wall, and hard-earned lessons about camp setup, meat storage, and staying loud and safe in bear country. In this episode, the guys dive deep into the wild world of black bears—population realities, predator dynamics, and why hunting bears over bait is far more ethical and challenging than most people think. They break down how bear numbers are (imperfectly) counted across Canada, the massive ecological and economic impact of black bears, and how predation from mature boars and crop damage factor into wildlife management. From there, they walk through what it actually takes to run a DIY baited bear hunt: months of gathering grain, carcasses, and fryer grease, prepping barrels, endless trips, and long days of rebaiting and sitting on stand. Then they cap it off with the story of “Vico,” a nearly 500-pound color-phase boar they patterned for years—an intense, up-and-down hunt that includes missed chances, a hot sow, a sketchy nighttime tracking job on a wounded giant, and finally recovering the biggest, most dominant black bear they’ve ever laid eyes on. Kevin Toye, Landen Fidek, and Jake Loewen sit down remotely with author and conservationist Douglas Boze. Diving into the world of politics, the Hunt Source crew recaps recent accusations of collusion within the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. Doug, a born-and-raised Washingtonian, has been at the forefront of this issue since the same commissioners removed the spring black bear hunt back in 2022. John Stallone of Howl For Wildlife joins the show to break down Oregon’s Initiative Petition 28 and its far-reaching consequences. We discuss how this proposed measure could effectively end hunting and fishing, reshape wildlife management, and even make many common farming practices illegal. John explains why IP28 isn’t just an Oregon issue, but a potential blueprint that could impact outdoor traditions, food production, and conservation policy across the U.S. and Canada. https://www.howlforwildlife.org https://oregonhunters.org/legislative-news/ www.huntsource.net Hunt Source Radio is sponsored by AKU Outdoors. visit https://akuoutdoor.ca Use Promocode FOCUS Powere by ONX visit https://www.onxmaps.com/ Use Promocode HUNTSOURCE

Sparked by Derek’s Q&A. This podcast dives deep into how hunters evolve from costly trial‑and‑error to refined systems and rituals. Rather than a checklist, the episode feels like a field journal, blending humor, tension, and relief with habits like post‑season gear audits, careful drying and storage of down, and proactive repairs. Listeners are walked through season‑by‑season priorities, from fast, lightweight early‑season setups to late‑season redundancy in electronics and range gear, and urged to treat archery, rifle, and cold‑weather kits as complete, tested systems. The hosts share earned field hacks, including using trekking poles as tent supports, quickly cleaning bloody packs, and swapping pads at night, while discussing bino harnesses, tarps, and common failure points on long hunts. Ultimately, the episode focuses on a mindset of building processes, tracking failures, keeping redundancies on critical items, and practicing with backups to create smarter, cleaner, more successful seasons. On this week's episode Hunt Source Radio's Q&A, Derek dives into preparation that should replace luck in elk country. Framed like a field journal, it starts with the foundations: realistic shooting under wind, awkward positions, and real pressure. Conditioning is treated as a non-negotiable tool, expanding how far you can hunt and how clear you think when altitude fights back. Gear failures become lessons, shaping quiet, efficient systems. Calling is approached like learning an instrument—intentional, disciplined, precise. Strategy and cartridge choices (28 Nosler vs 7 PRC) pull it together into a September elk-killing blueprint. his episode is brought to you by AKU OUTDOORS Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/@huntsource Promo Codes https://akuoutdoor.ca/ Use code Focus and save 15% https://ollin.co/ Use promocode KTOYE and save 10% https://www.onxmaps.com/ Use promocode "huntsource" and save 20%
