“New Amsterdam,” tells a captivating and compelling story of ambition, exploration, and adventure in the Dutch Colony of New Netherland.*Episode 5 - Line in the Sand*New Netherland's West India Company Director-General Pieter Stuyvesant was going through some things. After arriving in New Amsterdam, Stuyvesant went to work to straighten out the failing Dutch colony, and tried to undo the damage the previous Company Directors had done. But a group of residents of New Netherland were fed up with the Company's incompetent and dictatorial rulers and demanded a say in the Colony's government. The Council of Nine Men, who'd declared independence from Stuyvesant's government, sent delegates to the Dutch Republic to discuss the mismanagement of the Colony with the Republic's Government, the States General. “New Amsterdam,” tells a captivating and compelling story of ambition, exploration, and adventure in the Dutch Colony of New Netherland. *Episode 3 - This Means War* The Dutch West India Company, founded in 1621, had a lot on its plate. Their territory ranged from West-Africa to South America, the Caribbean plus a lone colony, New Netherland in North America. That north American colony was a money pit, and the wars fought to gain the southern territories for the sugar and salt trade were very expensive. Also, no one wanted to move to any of the colonies because of the company's trade and shipping monopoly. In the early 1640s, this monopoly was given up for both South- and North America, and just like that… everything changed. And no one was prepared.
