Calling all booklovers! We didn’t set out to record an episode about reading, but…it happened! In today’s episode, you’ll hear my sister, Elizabeth Carpenter, and I talk about one of our favorite topics: books! We actually don’t recommend a whole lot of books, but we focus on the value of reading and how it can benefit our spiritual lives. If you’ve ever wondered…Is reading fiction worth my time? Why do stories matter? Why did Jesus tell so many stories? How is reading a book different from reading a long Instagram caption or article online? How to choose books carefullyWhy books really are always better than movies! Stay tuned for a blog post of more book recommendations, but until then, here are the ones we mentioned today: Becoming Elisabeth ElliotBeing Elisabeth ElliotMissionary Series: Janet and Geoff Christian Heroes Gift Set 1-5Jane EyreThe Unselected Journals of Emma M. SEASON 1 FINALE !!! Can you believe it’s been almost half a year since our very first episode aired? My husband, Mohammed, is back on the podcast to wrap up our first season today! He opens up about how God brought him to the US over 10 years ago and divulges the details of our “how we met” story. You’ll realize quickly that it was nothing short of a miracle that God brought us–an unlikely couple from opposite sides of the world–together. We also reflect on our family’s word for the year and share how we’ve fought for unity in our cross-cultural marriage. Lastly, we offer our “two-cents” to both international students and Americans on how to build cross-cultural friendships that will last. If you’ve ever wondered: Is it possible to ruin God’s plan for my life? Is it too late for God to redeem my story? How can I pursue unity with my spouse? What is a cross-cultural marriage like? And yes, even, how did this girl meet her husband?? 😂Then this episode is for YOU!!!We hope the truths from this episode give you a sense of peace as you follow God in your daily life and leave you in awe of God’s providence & how He can use anything, even accidents, to accomplish His purposes. Have you ever heard of someone with 3 mama’s?? Well, now you have because today I’m joined by MINE! My mom, two older sisters, and I discuss what it means to “enjoy every stage” of motherhood and consider how the gospel affects how we mother and, particularly, how it offers hope when we blow it. We also share the scriptures we’re clinging to in our current stages of motherhood (two of us surprisingly, or unsurprisingly, maybe, have the same one!), along with some of our favorite memories of our mom (and she shares one about our grandmother!). We reminisce about moments we clearly remember from our childhoods, and we each imagine an ideal Mother’s Day.We also have a special message for those who are hurting this Mother’s Day. About 20 minutes into this show, we broach the subject of grief and loss in motherhood. If you’re in the thick of grief right now – whether from losing a child or longing for one – we want to tell you that we are so sorry. We understand how excruciating these losses and longings can be. The comfort we offer in this episode is simple: God is NEAR to the brokenhearted. He sees you. He loves you. He holds each and every tear of yours in a bottle, and one day, He will wipe them all away. We hope that whether this Mother’s Day finds you weeping or rejoicing, that this episode offers you gospel hope and leads you into more freedom in Christ. In today’s episode, I’m joined by my parents, Tim and Debbie Haire, and boy, are they both wells of wisdom–and stories, as you’ll hear! My mom has become the podcast’s most repeated and beloved guest, but this was my dad’s podcasting debut. In this thought-provoking conversation, he shares how he saw God’s provision firsthand in the early years of owning a business (one that he ran for 46 years!) and how that experience allowed him to learn to trust God with his whole heart – even when he would pay off one loan on Friday and have to ask for a new one on Monday for quite some time. While we do discuss generosity from a financial standpoint in some of this episode, it is not the sole focus; my hope is that you walk away from this conversation with a renewed mindset of stewardship in terms of your time, talents, gifts–spiritual and material–and service. Thank you so much for listening! I hope you are having a blessed Advent season thus far! Have you ever wondered what to do with thoughts that take up too much real estate in your mind? Have you ever wished you’d stop having certain thoughts in the first place? That is exactly what we’re talking about in today’s thought-provoking (pun most definitely intended!) episode. We’re swapping things up by having my husband Mohammed interview me about this important topic–one that’s been near and dear to my heart for years. During this conversation, you’ll hear me explain my initial reaction to hearing that the Bible instructs us to take an inventory of our thoughts, my journey of putting it into practice, and the freedom I’ve gained by being a “doer of the word” in this respect. I also share my heart behind the resource I created to serve women who’d like support in this area (myself included!): The Miraculous Freedom Journal: Take Your Thoughts Captive & Become Free Indeed🤔 If you’ve ever asked yourself: Where did THAT thought come from?Do I have any power over what I think? Why can’t I stop thinking this? How do I get this thought out of my head? Then you’re in the right place! We make this clear in the episode, but I want to add it here as well: if you’ve come to a place where you can’t make sense of your thoughts and feel stuck in them, please reach out to a counselor, or even a trusted mentor. New Season Alert!! After spending time this summer delving into a few things that God can free us from (The Summer of Freed From), today we’re launching Season 3: What the Gospel Frees Us to Do. I couldn’t think of a better way to start this season than by honing in on where it all begins: our minds! So in today’s episode, I get to sit down with my older sister, Elizabeth Carpenter, to talk about what it really means to love God with all of our minds, the importance of thinking critically as Christians, and some practical ways to engage our minds as we go about our days. Elizabeth shares candidly about her journey of NOT enjoying thinking deeply to making countercultural decisions in order to create a home culture that prioritizes it. And spoiler alert: something that has never happened before on the podcast happens at the end – WE BOTH CRY!Truth be told, we talked about BOOKS for about 20 minutes in the middle of this episode, and in order to give that segment the attention it deserves AND keep this episode at a manageable length for y’all, we will be releasing that as a separate episode in the near future, so stay tuned! COLLEGE STUDENTS…we’re looking at you for this one!! What happens when a sophomore, a senior, and an adjunct instructor sit down to talk about faith-life in college?? You’re about to find out! Today’s uplifting & inspiring episode features Abigail Dorgan of Jones County Junior College and Kenzie Loomis of the University of Mississippi. Each shares about her mindset entering college (which, you’ll hear, were very different!), how their relationships with God changed while at college, and how they’ve learned to maintain strong relationships with Him even while being in secular environments. If you’re heading off to college for the first time, are returning and want to do things differently, or just want to be encouraged to continue pursuing Christ, first let me have a Proud Mama moment & just say how much I admire you and am rooting for you🤍 You’re a part of a special generation, and I’m so glad you have the desire to seek the Lord. Secondly…I think you’re gonna love this episode!! Abigail and Kenzie share practical tips from how to be disciplined enough to get out of bed for church on Sunday mornings all the way to how to say “no” to old patterns of life even if it means losing friends. If you’re wondering…Will there be other Christians at college? How do I find my people once I get there? What’s the best piece of advice an upperclassman would give me starting out? What’s the best piece of advice an upperclassman would give me starting OVER??And even…is it “cool” to be a Christian at college? 😆Then you’re in the right place!!Thank you so much for listening, and we’d seriously LOVE for you to stick around! Welcome to the last episode of the Summer of Freed From and part two of my conversation with my dear friend, Kelly French! Last week, Kelly graciously shared about getting through a dark night of the soul, and this week, you’ll get to hear some of the practical things she’s put in place in order to connect with God more deeply. As you’ll hear on the episode, none of what we say is meant to be prescriptive or burdensome; in fact, Kelly posed an excellent question near the beginning of the episode: How do YOU connect with God? We both hope this conversation acts as a springboard for you to answer that question and provides you with ideas of different practices you could include in your daily/weekly rhythms. If you’ve ever wondered…How to create an awareness of God as you go about your dayHow to overcome lies that may be keeping you from approaching GodHow to know if it’s God speaking, the enemy, or your own thoughtsHow to keep technology in its proper place in your lifeWhat you can cut out of your life to free up some of your mind spaceThen this episode is for you!Book mentioned in this episode: Walking with God by John EldredgeWanna follow us on socials?IG: @miraculousfreedomFacebook: Miraculous Freedom Ministries YouTube: @MiraculousFreedomCheck out our website for freebies (including my top 3 summer reading recs) & more!
Today’s conversation was SO meaty that we had to divide it into two parts! I’ve got the privilege of sharing the first half of that conversation with you today, and I am so excited for you to hear one of my dearest friends, Kelly French, share her heart about connecting with God and developing a close relationship with Him. As you’ll hear in today’s episode, Kelly grew up as a PK (pastor’s kid!) and truly admired her mother’s faith as a little girl. Her parents intentionally modeled and taught her to cultivate and nurture a personal relationship with the Lord at a young age, and she truly does have one of the deepest relationships with God that I’ve observed as an adult. However, Kelly experienced a “dark night of the soul” a few years ago, during which she felt distant from God, and as if she was unable to hear from Him like before. Today, she vulnerably opens up and explains how she persisted through this incredibly trying time, what God taught her through this, and how she ended up experiencing His nearness in new, fresh ways on the other side. If you’ve ever wondered…What it means to “enter into God’s presence” What to do when you feel “far” from GodWhat the benefits of pursuing a closer relationship with God areThen this episode is for you! And if you like this one, I know you’re gonna LOVE next week’s because it’s with Kelly again, and we go even further into the details and get super practical in how to implement some of the concepts we talked about today. Don’t forget to check back here next Tuesday to, as Larry King would say, hear the rest of the story :) In the meantime, you may want to go back and listen to Episode 004: Conversations with a College Student: Does It Matter If I Pray? to hear a conversation on the ins and outs of prayer! Y’all – what a FUN, rich, thought-provoking episode! Today, I have Nicolet Bell on the podcast to talk about her latest book Choosing Cheer: Experiencing the Joy of Jesus in the Everyday and Unimaginable. And I have to say…after reading it, I feel as if my joy has been refreshed! Nicolet is a gifted speaker, author, and podcaster, and the new president and CEO of Million Praying Moms. As you’ll hear in the intro, God crossed our paths while we were in college, and I’ve remembered Nicolet since then as two things: someone who had a deep prayer life that honored God AND a cheerleader, as she was on the cheer squad at our university! It is no coincidence that she is now in charge of a ministry focused on prayer & has written a book on cheer/joy! Nicolet’s passion for Jesus and joy shine through as she speaks, and I think you’ll be really motivated to pursue the joy of Jesus after listening. If you’re looking for…A fresh perspective on joyAn explanation of the difference between joy & happinessThe reason that control zaps the joy out of lifeHelp with releasing control & holding your plans more loosely Encouragement to INCREASE joy in your life as you age rather than decrease itThen you are in the RIGHT PLACE! Oh, and Nicolet shared some VERY exciting personal news with me early in the conversation, so I hope you enjoy hearing that as well! You can get your copy of Nicolet’s book Choosing Cheer on her website, Amazon, or anywhere books are sold. It is most definitely worth the read, and I highly recommend it! In today’s vulnerable episode, I’m delving into an area of my past that I’ve never shared before: the ins and outs of the 2.5 years that I struggled with disordered eating. If you’re in the midst of a similar battle, please know: I have done my best to strike a balance between sharing enough detail that you can see how subtly the enemy works and expose the lies I believed at the time, WHILE avoiding being specific enough to accidentally provide an unhealthy plan for weight loss. I do not discuss anything number-related, and I avoid discussing exact behaviors that I engaged in at the time (I do briefly mention allowing my relationship with food to interfere with my social life). I intentionally focus on the internal battle in my mind, rather than sharing minutiae that could potentially be triggering to some listeners. I bet we’ve all heard a conversation that gave us more details than we needed and left us feeling a tad traumatized; you can rest assured that this conversation is not one of those. My goals in this episode are to: Reveal the tactics of the enemy that led me down this path (so that you can recognize & avoid them!)Highlight the moment that God set me on my journey to freedom Explain how I learned to LIVE INTO this freedom over timeOffer hope for anyone in a similar situation (or anyone who loves someone in a similar situation), that they, too, can be rescued from this strongholdInstill confidence that no matter what your problems are in life, whether related to body image or not, God delights in you and desires your freedom. Scriptures from today’s episode: Psalm 18:6 Psalm 34:4Psalm 139Matthew 12:43-45Psalm 119:11Galatians 5:1 (I second-guessed myself and said it was verse 13 first – overthinking at its finest! We corrected it on the video, but not audio) Romans 12:2 (Another correction needed!! So sorry! I said it was verse 1)1 John 4:1-6James 4:7Thanks so much for listening! Welcome to the second episode of the Summer of Freed-From! I am so excited for you to hear this powerful conversation with a guest I've seen overcome fear and anxiety with my own two eyes: my mom, Debbie Haire. And she's here to share her secrets with YOU!You'll hear her explain how she got started on her journey of defeating fear and even the moment she learned what fear actually is, how she pressed forward on that journey even though it came with its challenges, and the benefits she's seen of not giving in to fear. She also set a record for the most scriptures referenced and quoted in a Miraculous Freedom episode! So if you don't know where to start in learning what the Bible says about fear or in scripture memory to combat fear, look no further than the list below!!If you've ever wondered... - Am I just an anxious person or can I live free from anxiety?- Where would I even start if I wanted to get freed from anxiety? - What does it mean to "take every thought captive"? (And how is that possible??)- What should I do when my thoughts get stuck on a loop? Welcome to the Summer of Freed-From! For the 5 Tuesdays of July, we're going to focus on something that could change your life if you let it: how to get freed from strongholds. In this episode, you're going to hear from me one-on-one, as I explain some key differences between what the Bible says about freedom and what American culture believes about it. Why does this matter? Well, if our perspectives of freedom have been shaped by our cultures rather than our Bibles, we may need to redefine the common phrase "freedom in Christ" so that we know exactly what we're after as we pursue freedom.I hope today's conversation causes you to think critically about some key questions: - Is freedom really being able to do whatever I want? And what's the point of pursuing freedom if it's NOT that?- How has my cultural background of independence influenced my understanding of biblical freedom?- Where have I crossed the line from true freedom into irreverent independence? - How can I use my freedom to serve others in love instead of serving my flesh?Scriptures from today's episode: Galatians 5:13 John 15:13John 10:17-18Philippians 2:3-8Thanks so much for listening!
