“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” – JFK   Host Keerthi travels back to the inauguration of George Washington to give a humorous, yet informative history of Presidential inaugurations in the United States. She even talks about the fashions, frills, and forgettable faux pax, including the lessons from the 2021 storming of the Capitol with the not-so-peaceful transfer of power.  The most important thing we all need to remember about the presidential inauguration: whether it’s 1789 or 2025, whether it’s George Washington or Donald Trump, the inauguration is a reminder that in this country, democracy is the star of the show. It’s a moment of transition, a symbol of unity. Let’s hope January 20, 2025 is a great day for America.   Follow us: https://www.starstyleradio.com/expressyourselfteenradio •       https://www.facebook.com/ExpressYourselfTeenRadio/ •       https://www.facebook.com/BTSYAcharity/ •       https://www.instagram.com/expressyourselfradio/ Sign up for FREE Newsletter: https://cynthiabrian.substack.com/ Buy shirts and hats with BTSYA logos: https://www.bonfire.com/store/be-the-star-you-are-merch/ Listen to all  Express Yourself!™ Teen shows at https://sites.libsyn.com/560220 Listen to StarStyle®-Be the STAR You Are!® shows: https://sites.libsyn.com/556617 Find out more about Express Yourself! at https://www.starstyleradio.com/expressyourselfteenradio
There has always been a large debate on if social media is positive or negative because there are so many opinions about this topic. On one hand, your friends might be telling you to download these apps and post some pictures, and on the other hand your parents might be telling you to measure your time spent on social media. Host and Reporter, Diya, gives the low-down on the positive aspects of being on social media and also the truly negatives things that transpire. How much are you on social media? “Don’t use social media to impress people; use it to impact people.”- Dave Willis    Follow us: https://www.starstyleradio.com/expressyourselfteenradio •       https://www.facebook.com/ExpressYourselfTeenRadio/ •       https://www.facebook.com/BTSYAcharity/ •       https://www.instagram.com/expressyourselfradio/ Sign up for FREE Newsletter: https://cynthiabrian.substack.com/ Buy shirts and hats with BTSYA logos: https://www.bonfire.com/store/be-the-star-you-are-merch/ Listen to StarStyle®-Be the STAR You Are!® shows: https://sites.libsyn.com/556617 Find out more about Express Yourself! at https://www.starstyleradio.com/expressyourselfteenradio   Listen to all Express Yourself!™ Teen shows at https://sites.libsyn.com/560220
"Climate change is the most severe problem that we are facing today, more serious even than the threat of terrorism." - Anonymous The answer is YES! Host Keerthi starts off the show with this message: “We are concerned. You know why? Because we live here! You can’t just order a new planet from Amazon Prime.” The concern is real. Studies show that over 70% of teens say climate change makes them anxious. Teens are creative, resourceful, and a little desperate—an excellent combination when it comes to change. Keerthi interviews the newest reporter, Hanna, who recognizes the injustice of the world teens are inheriting. Young people see that previous generations lived with fewer limits and more consumption, while ours will inherit the bill. And that sparks outrage, but also responsibility. Hanna shares how teens are turning worry into productivity with youth activism. They have hope, courage, and are making noise! “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.”— Mother Teresa In today’s episode, host Julia with new reporter Hanna talk about what concerns teens the most…mental health, the climate crisis, waste, eco-anxiety, and more. Julia dives into “doomism”, doom-scrolling, and advocates for her generation that has lived through “historic” tragedies: terrorism, endless wars, “orange alert” paranoia, the 2008 financial crash, the pandemic, cost-of-living crises, natural disasters, and the climate emergency. Studies show empathy levels plummeted after 2000, but this generation of youth is pushing for political accountability. She believes that cynicism doesn’t have to mean paralysis. Julia introduces our new reporter on Express Yourself Teen radio, Hanna. Hanna’s segment is called Political Philosophy, and in today’s broadcast, she discusses upcycling, donating, and even selling secondhand. These aren’t just eco-friendly actions, they’re ways of living out our responsibility to others and to the future. Studies show that over 50% of young people say climate change makes them very worried, and almost half say it impacts their daily lives. Upcycling means taking something old or “useless” and transforming it into something new, valuable, or beautiful. Unlike recycling, it doesn’t require breaking things down—it just reimagines them. The U.S. generates 292 million tons of trash every year. The fashion industry alone creates 92 million tons of textile waste. Making a single cotton t-shirt takes 700 gallons of water. Every time you upcycle—or even keep something in circulation instead of tossing it—you’re saving resources and reducing harm. Hanna offers ways to make a difference. In the final segment, Julia and Hanna engage in a conversation about moral obligations to to future generations, questions about justice, fairness, and responsibility to others globally, ways to live sustainably, and ethical responses to big problems like climate change.   Teens care about everything! Have hope!     Bio: Hanna Yu is a high school senior from the Bay Area who is passionate about political philosophy. She has conducted research with university professors, written articles, and presented her work at national symposiums.  Hanna is also a dancer, debater, and sculptor, whose work brings together art and political thought. In her spare time, Hanna pursues her passion for sustainable fashion by leading closet swaps and secondhand clothing sales. “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” Norman Vincent Peale   Host Saanvi Phaneendra take you on a journey into the world of rockets, space, and the story of her nonprofit, Galactic Getaway. Her Eagle Scout project turned into a mission: bringing museum-quality rocket exhibits into libraries and universities across the San Francisco Bay Area to inspire kids, teens, and adults about the future of space exploration. Over the next half hour, she shares the vision behind Galactic Getaway, the rockets she chose, how she researched and curated their specifications, where the exhibit has traveled, the impact it has made, and where she hopes to take it in the future. To learn more about the project or how to bring the exhibit to your community, visit galacticget.org.   Space exploration is unfolding, and it starts with the curiosity we inspire today. Is Democracy Dying?

Is Democracy Dying?

2025-08-0815:10

“Democracies may die at the hands not of generals but of elected leaders—presidents or prime ministers who subvert the very process that brought them to power. “ - Steven Levitsky   Host Keerthi brings substance and humor to a very serious topic: democracy. Democracy is a mess. It’s a beautiful, chaotic, meme-worthy mess. Democracy has made mistakes. Big ones. But she’s evolving. Citizens should be worried about voter suppression, disinformation overload, political polarization, cynicism, and apathy. Democracy isn’t perfect because people aren’t perfect. When this country was founded, there was one clear goal: No kings. Because, despite all the chaos… More young people are voting than ever before. More women and people of color are running for office. Protest movements—from climate to racial justice to gun reform. Democracy isn’t dying, but it is up to us to protect it. "To every child – I dream of a world where you can laugh, dance, sing, learn, live in peace, and be happy" - Malala Yousafzai   Host Sharanya Roy doesn’t believe brilliance is limited by borders. She recently returned from Africa where she witnessed children eager to learn and study, with a profound quest for knowledge. Learning is freedom. It’s power. And it deserves to be shared. To bring computer science education to underprivileged societies, Be the Star You Are!® teenager, Sharanya, founded the organization PlotLyft.  She is currently working with the young Maasai students in Ngorongoro, Tanzania. She says, “We have so much to learn from each other. Real impact doesn’t come from giving things. It comes from listening. From sharing. From showing up, and staying committed.” If you’d like to help bring education to the Maasai in Africa, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/together-lets-bring-classrooms-to-the-maasai You can also email Plotlyft@gmail.com for more information or to get involved in the program. Staying Fit for Summer

Staying Fit for Summer

2025-07-2528:43

“The body achieves what the mind conceives!” Napoleon Hill   Julia and Kirpa host a program about how to stay fit during the summer and beyond. Reporter Milan talks about ways to exercise, participating in sports, enjoying healthy foods, and having fun. Kirpa shares that summer is a great time to switch up your fitness routine and take advantage of the outdoors. To stay motivated, she encourages exercising with a friend, joining a summer fitness challenge, or even mixing in fun outdoor sports can keep you accountable and inspired. Summer heat can pose real risks during physical activity. Overheating or heat exhaustion happens when your body can’t cool down fast enough. Kirpa also tells us that sleep is just as important as your workouts and nutrition. Julia chimes in with important intel about the darker side to the idea of staying fit, “winter arcs” and “summer bodies,” and what that means for everyone. Our bodies aren’t seasonal products. They don’t need to be “summer ready” or “bikini approved.” The “summer body” mindset is problematic. An umbrella will help with sun protection. Slather on the SPF. Go for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, all year around, even on cloudy days. Stay away from tanning beds. “We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” — Anonymous Travel is more than just moving from one place to another—it's a doorway to discovery, growth, and wonder. Every journey, no matter how short or far-flung, carries the potential to shift perspectives, awaken the soul, and spark adventure in the most unexpected ways. “In 1919, when the world was grounded by war and pandemic, a few brave souls looked up—and dared to fly into history." – inspired by The Big Hop by David Rooney In 1919, in Newfoundland, four teams of aviators raced to be the first to fly, non-stop, across the Atlantic. Only one team, after a death-defying flight, made it to Ireland. Host Saanvi Phaneendra interviews author, David Rooney, about his book THE BIG HOP, the inspiring story of the pathbreaking journey and the aviators who risked their lives to make history. In segment two, Saanvi flies from the edges of the solar system to the pulse of distant planets. She dives into the incredible stories behind six spacecraft that didn’t just leave Earth, they rewrote how we understand the cosmos and our planet. They aren’t just metal and machinery floating in space… they’re storytellers, detectives, and explorers. These missions show that space exploration isn’t just about reaching the stars. It’s about understanding where we come from, how our planet is changing, and what’s still waiting out there. History isn’t just in the past. It’s in every takeoff, every challenge, and every leap we make.   Bio: David Rooney is a British historian and museum curator. He was born in north-east England and moved to London in 1995 to take a traineeship at the Science Museum, where he encountered—and was later responsible for—the airplane flown across the Atlantic in 1919, the subject of his book, THE BIG HOP. www.davidrooney.uk ·         ·         ·       Follow us: https://www.starstyleradio.com/expressyourselfteenradio https://www.starstyleradio.com/guests-express-yourself https://www.facebook.com/ExpressYourselfTeenRadio/ https://www.facebook.com/BTSYAcharity/ https://www.instagram.com/expressyourselfradio/   Sign up for FREE Newsletter: https://cynthiabrian.substack.com/ Buy shirts and hats with BTSYA logos: https://www.bonfire.com/store/be-the-star-you-are-merch/   Listen to StarStyle®-Be the STAR You Are!® shows: https://sites.libsyn.com/556617   Listen to all Express Yourself!™ Teen shows at https://sites.libsyn.com/560220
“ The environment is no one’s property to destroy; it’s everyone’s responsibility to protect.” - Mohith Agadi ·       In most cultures around the globe, the planet Earth is portrayed as a powerful female god, a nurturer, and a creator. This interdependence among the living organisms and our planet impacts our daily lives. Reporters Kirpa and Milan join the discussion. Kirpa focuses on climate change, environmental impacts, biodiversity, and ways that young people can contribute to protecting the Earth. Milan talks about what can happen when we don’t take action. Summer!

2025-06-1328:03

Summer “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” ― F. Scott Fitzgerald   Keerthi and Julia offer a fun-filled sunshine show about summer. Keerthi starts off with a hysterical riff on how she is now a senior citizen at the old age of 16 with all the wisdom that entails. With oodles of humor with concrete ideas on how to spend a productive summer. A few of her suggestions include starting a business, volunteering, reading, interning, and sleeping. Then Julia takes the stage to share her experiences with triathlons. Swimming, running, and biking are the stuff of superheroes, and Julia breaks it down with tips on how to get started this summer. She says that the triathlon is one of the hardest things she’s ever done and the most rewarding. Learn how to suffer and smile. Move forward when your body screams stop. Fall apart and keep going anyway. Don’t miss this fabulous program with two terrific teens who express themselves. Happy summer! May your sunscreen be strong!
In segment two, host Saanvi is honored to interview Steven Zhou, PhD, with his book, From First Job to Career, which blends real-life first-job stories with expert insights from vocational psychology. This engaging guide helps readers navigate the complex, non-linear world of modern work, offering inspiration, research, and practical tools to build a meaningful career path. Steven was the first radio host of Express Yourself!™and helped shape the early vision of the program in 2011 and even wrote and played the guitar for the iconic theme music you hear at the beginning of every show! Fast forward to today, and Steven has taken that same spirit of creativity, leadership, and impact into everything he does. (Read his bio) Steven recommends visiting MyNEXTMOVE.org to discover where your skills and interests may be for a career. But before interviewing Steven, Saanvi dives into big data, data analytics, and space in segment one. Big data is a huge amount of information. Think satellite images, temperature readings, rocket sensor logs, or even social media trends. Data analytics is the magic process of finding patterns, insights, and answers in all that information, so we can make smarter decisions. Every day, satellites orbiting Earth collect terabytes of data, monitoring climate patterns, tracking urban development, and even predicting natural disasters. This cosmic influx isn't just for astronauts or astrophysicists; it's a goldmine for data analysts, researchers, and curious minds ready to make an impact right here on Earth. Whether you're gazing at the stars or crunching numbers on Earth, remember that the skills you develop today can propel you into exciting, uncharted territories. Embrace the data, explore the unknown, and let your curiosity guide your career journey. Data isn’t just numbers—it’s a story waiting to be told.   Bio: Steven Zhou completed his PhD in organizational psychology at George Mason University and is an incoming Assistant Professor of Psychology at Claremont McKenna College. His primary areas of research include leadership, psychometrics, and quantitative methods (including the application of LLMs and machine learning algorithms), careers and calling, and science communication. During his time at Mason, he published over 20 peer-reviewed articles, brought in almost $40k in external research funding, and taught almost a dozen course sections at both undergraduate and graduate levels in both psychology and business. What she’s learned is that leadership teaches time management. She’s learned to be calm under pressure, how to communicate effectively, how to delegate, and of course, to fake it until you make it. Youth leadership shapes your future. It makes you bold. It makes you curious. It teaches you that even when things go completely off-script, you’re capable of stepping up, laughing it off, and finding a solution. Keerthi encourages every young leader—whether you’re the president of five clubs, the captain of your team, or the unofficial motivational speaker in your friend group. In segment two, she gives listeners the six “Stages of Youth Leadership Creation™”. Youth leadership isn’t about being perfect—it's about being brave enough to try. And remember: if all else fails, just add “Youth Empowerment” to the name and you’re golden. Effervescent teen host, Julia Howe, orchestrates a lively radio broadcast focused on movies and interviews two radio reporters from KIDS FIRST. Julia says that teen movies shape the way teens think about growing up, relationships, and offer a sense of identity. The movies she highlights have been a mirror to high school lives and, at times, an escape from them. From Ferris Bueller, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Clueless to Mean Girls, Lady Bird, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, High School Musical 2, and more, today’s teen films are breaking new ground. Julia then interviews Ashleigh and Kinsley, two KIDS FIRST film critics. They talk about how their backgrounds in debate and acting have helped them be KIDS FIRST reporters. They also offer their opinions on what they’d like to see changed or modified in the entertainment industry. KIDS FIRST empowers youth to navigate today's media through film-based learning, developing critical thinking, communication, and cultural understanding. Ashleigh and Kinsley discuss how they have grown from their involvement with KIDS FIRST.   Bios Ashleigh C. (20), of Virginia, is a researcher at George Mason University, studying Youth Participatory Action research and an advisor for Bridge USA’s High School Program for retooling civic/political discourse in today’s youth. She teaches STEM to girls through a female-led, non-profit named Posse Empowerment. She loves sharing her opinions about entertainment through KIDS FIRST! She loves the film, Just Go With It because it’s fun, inspiring actors and has a clear message. She admires Chris Evans, for his acting and his contribution to ending political discourse, just like Captain America. Danai Gurira is her favorite actress, for portraying a strong African American female in The Walking Dead. She is a Speech & Debate Champion and President of her high school speech and debate team. Kinsley H. (age 13) lives in Missouri. She joined KIDS FIRST! because she wants to be more involved in the entertainment industry. Her favorite actress is Millie Bobby Brown, because she plays characters that are strong role models. Kinsley enjoys musical films such as 13: The Musical and Matilda the Musical and has performed in many of them at her local community theater. Recently, she played HeeShe in Giants in the Sky: A New Children’s Musical,Ballet Girl in Freckleface Strawberry and Jim Hawkins in Treasure Island. Her biggest accomplishment was being cast as Jane Banks in Mary Poppins, Jr., which was her first role in the big theater. She intends to pursue an acting career and perform on Broadway.
