Description

For over 25 years Cinematic Sound Radio has been playing the very best soundtrack music from film, TV and video games. We feature music from the golden age classic scores of the 30, 40 and 50s, the retro silver age scores from the 60s and 70s, all the way through to the 80s, 90s and the modern-day classics of the 21st century.

When tuning in you'll hear interviews with composers, orchestrators, musicians, authors, soundtrack experts and industry insiders. We also do deeper dives into some of the best scores ever composed. And, of course, you'll hear LOTS of great music.

We feature 10 unique shows exploring one of the most underappreciated art forms by people who are passionate about the art form. We hope you enjoy the programming as much as we do producing them.

Welcome to the inaugural episode of PLAY MORRICONE FOR ME on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO. You have no idea how thrilled I am to welcome Jack Criddle and his terrific program into the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO family. I've been an admirer of Jack's show for quite some time; it reminds me a lot of Ley Bricknell's FILMIC program... eclectic, unique, exceptional, and downright entertaining. Similar to Ley, he plays stuff on this show I never would have thought to play. So, strap yourself in because once you hear the words "Play Morricone For Me," you are in for a ride. Please give a warm CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO welcome to Jack in the comments below. - Erik Woods —— SHOW NOTES Producer & host Jack Criddle started broadcasting PLAY MORRICONE FOR ME—a film music radio show with an inclination towards cult and genre scores—in 2017, on the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts’ station. The program switched to a prerecorded format in 2020, has highlighted everything from spaghetti westerns to cannibal movies to Disney songs, and has featured such guests as John Sayles, Fabio Frizzi, Ben Model and the B-52’s Pat Irwin. To celebrate the beginning of PMFM’s new home on Cinematic Sound Radio, Jack turns his attention to debut film scoring gigs by some of the world’s great composers. These range from the relatively obscure, like Morricone’s IL FEDERALE, John Barry’s NEVER LET GO, and Quincy Jones's THE BOY IN THE TREE, to the well-known and celebrated, like CITIZEN KANE, CAPTAIN BLOOD, DEEP RED, SHAFT and more. Over the past decade, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO has produced numerous programs celebrating the life and music of James Horner, including a standout three-part documentary by Jason Drury that remains essential listening. I’ve also contributed several Horner-focused episodes myself, from explorations of his re-recorded works and end credit suites to in-depth analyses of Sneakers and Aliens alongside Randy Andrews. I had assumed I’d said all I wanted to say about Horner, but over the past year I’ve come across a few unusual scores while filling gaps in my CD collection, titles like The Name of the Rose, Where the River Runs Black, and Southpaw, that pulled me back in. Horner is widely known for his emotionally rich, melodic style, blending sweeping orchestration with subtle electronic elements and crafting memorable themes that carry a film’s emotional core. But beyond that familiar sound lies a more experimental side, where he embraced unconventional techniques and textures. In scores like The Name of the Rose and Commando, he explored eerie vocalizations, dissonant electronics, and unusual instrumentation, revealing a composer willing to take creative risks. Today’s program is dedicated to those bold, avant-garde Horner works that showcase his more unexpected musical voice. Jason then continues the show with a suite from the album DEBBIE WISEMAN: MUSIC FOR FILM AND TELEVISION (Silva Screen Records) and more Jerry Goldsmith with music from the deluxe edition of MEDICINE MAN (Varese Sarabande Records), as well as music from the deluxe edition of Brian Tyler's score for TIMELINE (Varese Sarabande Records). Simon Franglen is a multi-award-winning British composer and record producer whose music has been included in some of the most critically acclaimed films of recent decades. Franglen composed the acclaimed score for James Cameron's AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER in 2023, after his collaboration with the late James Horner on the original film in 2009. He received a 2023 World Soundtrack Award and a 2022 IFMCA Award for his efforts. His score was praised for expanding the sonic world of Pandora with both epic scale and profound intimacy and was a global hit, with the soundtrack album surpassing 750 million global streams. Over the past two years, he has continued his collaboration with Cameron on AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH, released in December 2025, a score that introduced major new themes, textures, and innovative electronica to the AVATAR musical universe. In January 2026, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury had the pleasure of talking to Simon via Zoom at his home in Los Angeles. During the interview, they talked about Simon's work on the AVATAR franchise, how he became involved in film music and his relationship and collaboration with the late great James Horner. Today’s episode is all about personal favourites. Over the next seven episodes of THE FLAGSHIP SHOW, I’ll be counting down my  TOP 25 SCORES OF THE 21st CENTURY.  These are the soundtracks that have resonated with me the most, scores that I believe deserve a special place in any discussion about the best music of the last quarter-century. While my list may not align with everyone’s tastes, it’s a reflection of the music that has left a lasting impression on me. In this special series, you’ll hear a mix of fan-favourite classics and perhaps a few surprises along the way. These are the scores that have stuck with me over the years, whether for their emotional depth, unforgettable themes, or the way they perfectly enhanced the films they were written for. I invite you to join me as we celebrate the music that has inspired and moved me personally. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this journey through 25 years of remarkable film music. Last time on THE FLAGSHIP SHOW, I presented part one of my two-part interview with film music journalist, Cinematic Sound Radio host and friend, Jason Drury. If you haven't listened to that episode, I highly recommend you do so before listening to this episode. In part two, Jason and I talk about feedback from the public, Jason’s James Horner audio documentary, how he came to be a member of Cinematic Sound Radio, his future aspirations, and his relationship with the late recording engineer, Mike Ross-Trevor. I thank Jason for taking the time to talk with me and to open up candidly, not only about his passions but also about sharing some of the deeper personal stories. Here now is part one of my chat with Jason, a discussion which took place on a warm fall evening in my dimly lit studio on September 25, 2025 —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Joe Wiles, Maxime, William Welch, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Jim Wilson, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Alex Brouns, Randall Derchan, Angela Rabatin, Larry Reese, Rudy Amaya, Stacy Livitsanis, Carl Wonders, Lee Wileman, Nathan Blumenfeld, Daniel Herrin, Scott Bordelon, James Alexander, Brett French, Ian Clark, Ron, Andy Gray, Joel Nichols, Steve Daniel, Corey O'Brien, John Leggett, Mim Williams, Grace Hamilton, Rob Kemp. —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. Today's program is a special one. This is the first interview that I've conducted since way back in 2000, when I interviewed Michael Giacchino during the MEDAL OF HONOR: UNDERGROUND recording sessions in Seattle. Maybe one day I'll unearth that interview for you all. Back on September 25th of this year, I sat down with CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO's own Jason Drury, who will be releasing his 50th episode of THE ARCHIVE on this podcast soon. Jason was visiting Robert Daniels and me once more, and during one of his last evenings here, he made his way to the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO studios to have a chat about his lifelong fascination with film music, which began at an early age with his discovery of the music of Barry Grey, John Williams and James Horner, among others. We also chatted about turning his passion into broadcasting, first on the internet radio station KASPAAR in his home of Kent, England, and then joining CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, where he completed his magnum opus, a three-part documentary on James Horner. Afterwards, Jason created two new podcast series for CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, called THE ARCHIVE and TALKING SOUNDTRACKS. Since 2021, Jason has expanded his influence as a writer and interviewer for FILM SCORE MONTHLY, engaging with many of today’s leading composers. Beyond his broadcasting and journalistic work, he remains an avid movie-goer and cricket enthusiast. As a proud member of the INTERNATIONAL FILM MUSIC CRITICS ASSOCIATION (IFMCA), Jason continues to champion the world of film music, sharing his insight, enthusiasm, and deep appreciation for the art form with audiences around the world. We also delve into Jason’s personal journey, including his experiences with bullying and the lasting impact it had on his confidence. He shares how film music became a vital source of comfort and strength during those difficult years. Ultimately, that passion led him to podcasting, which helped him rebuild his self-belief and connect with others who share his love for the art form. Sadly, and without much fanfare, we lost another dedicated film music fan and a very good friend, Tom Kiefner. November 2, 1947 – June 13, 2025. He was a gentle soul, a passionate baseball fan and a skilled photographer. I initially met Tom in the early 2000s when I joined a message board on scorereviews.com, which is now maintitles.net. There, I read Tom’s enthusiastic postings about melodic, orchestral Golden Age scores, and classical music. He would wax poetic about Korngold, Rozsa, Waxman, Herrmann, Tiomkin, Newman and Hugo Friedhofer who peened his favourite score of all time, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. He would often express his admiration for early television shows and the music composed for them including Lalo Schifrin’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE and Morton Stevens’ HAWAII-FIVE-O. I befriended Tom, and we talked about film music and his other interests, such as photography and baseball. He once told me that he casually chatted with Wayne Gretzky, whose son played for one of the teams Tom was photographing that day. The discussions would continue to include Hammer Horror films, Les Baxter, Charles Gerhardt, and Tom’s dream of starting a website dedicated solely to Golden Age scores. I thought it was a great idea. He then offered me money to create the website for him. Even if I could… I don’t have the skills to do so… I would never take Tom’s money. I then suggested he contact Bregt De Lange, who designed the maintitles.net website. GoldenScores.com launched in 2006. After the site closed a few years later, Tom moved his film music essays and reviews to his new WordPress blog, Film and Classical Music: Neglected Art. There, Tom’s writings, which began in 2006, are archived. His last review was on May 4, 2022. In 2010, Tom accepted an invitation to guest-host his own episode of Cinematic Sound Radio. I told him he could play whatever he wanted, as long as it was Golden Age-themed. These are the original show notes. FILM MUSIC MIX | GOLDEN AGE SCORES with guest host TOM KIEFNER from FILM MUSIC: THE NEGLECTED ART On this edition of FILM MUSIC MIX guest host Tom Kiefner from the film music blog, FILM MUSIC: THE NEGLECTED ART, will take us on a journey through the wonderful sounds of Hollywood’s Golden Age. You will hear music by Bernard Herrmann from the film HANGOVER SQUARE featuring the Concert Macabre. You’ll also hear a couple of selections from THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES by Hugo Friedhofer (Tom’s favorite score) and a spectacular suite from HORROR OF DRACULA by James Bernard. Afterwards, enjoy the Americana sounds of Aaron Copland with THE RED PONY and finish off with the tune that got Tom into film music; the up tempo theme from PETER GUNN by Henry Mancini. So, on today’s very special episode, and in honour of one of the great champions of film music and my friend, we proudly rebroadcast Tom’s show, which first premiered on September 3, 2010. Rest in peace, my friend! —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Joe Wiles, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Jim Wilson, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, William Burke, Rudy Amaya, Stacy Livitsanis, Rick Laird, Carl Wonders, Nathan Blumenfeld, Lee Wileman, Daniel Herrin, Scott Bordelon, James Alexander, Brett French, Ian Clark, Ron, Andy Gray, Joel Nichols, Steve Daniel, Corey O'Brien, John Leggett, Mim Williams, Grace Hamilton, Rob Kemp. —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. The best podcast too keep up-to-date with the world of film scoring. Eric Woods does an excellent job with the Flagship Show to showcase the very best of what is coming out (with often generous selections). The other shows provide nice nose-dives in to specific sub-genres. Kudos in particular to Jason Drury for his interviews and to Ley Bricknell, whose voice I love.
