In this special episode of 'And Then They Were Gone', Kona and Ethan return to a case they’ve been following for years, the disappearance and murder of Shane Donahue, to break down everything that unfolded inside the courtroom during the trial of Tim Hickerson.Kona attended the trial in person, witnessing each day of testimony, every witness, and the prosecution’s strategy as they laid out their case against the man accused of taking Shane’s life. This episode walks listeners through how prosecutors presented their evidence, how witnesses held up under cross-examination, and what key moments left those sitting in the courtroom confounded.Throughout the conversation, Kona and Ethan reflect on what they’ve learned since first covering Shane’s disappearance in 2020, and what this trial revealed about the events leading up to his death, the investigation that followed, and the long path toward justice. This is a deep dive into one of Prince William County, Virginia's most controversial cases, and a look at what it’s like to sit inside a courtroom when a 15-year-old case is finally put in front of a jury. Subscribe to Day by Day: True Crime StoriesBuy the ebook! - And Then They Were Gone: True Stories of Those Who Went Missing and Never Came HomeSubmit a caseFind us everywhereGet episodes early and ad-free on PatreonMerch storeOur Sponsors:* Check out Acorns Early: https://acornsearly.com/ATTWG* Check out Avocado Green Mattress: https://avocadogreenmattress.com* Check out Earth Breeze: https://earthbreeze.com/attwg* Check out Everyday Dose and use my code ATTWG for a great deal: https://everydaydose.com* Check out Happy Mammoth and use my code ATTWG for a great deal: https://happymammoth.com* Check out Kensington Publishing: https://www.kensingtonbooks.com* Check out Mind of a Monster: The Killer Nurse: https://podcasts.apple.com* Check out Mood and use my code ATTWG for a great deal: https://mood.com* Check out PharmaNutra and use my code ATTWG for a great deal: https://pharmanutra-us.com* Check out Quince: https://quince.com/ATTWG* Check out Uncommon Goods: https://uncommongoods.com/attwgAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In the days following the 1980 presidential election, 44-year-old political fundraiser Nancy Marleine Snow returned home to Maryland — and vanished.A multilingual world traveler and political professional, Nancy had spent the fall working on a Senate campaign in St. Louis. On November 4, she flew to Baltimore, attended an election party, and the next morning, was picked up by a man she trusted — her housesitter, Paul T. Collins III. That was the last confirmed time she was seen alive.Days later, Collins told police that Nancy had met a mysterious man called “Captain Jay,” who offered her a job crewing a yacht from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean. He claimed she left Annapolis with $1,000 in cash and would be home by Christmas. But investigators never found a “Captain Jay.” No boat, no records, no passport use — nothing to support the story. As weeks passed, Nancy’s daughters in California grew frantic. When her oldest daughter’s birthday came and went with no call, they knew something was wrong. They filed missing-person reports, searched Florida marinas, and pushed police in Maryland to investigate.Decades later, detectives would call Nancy’s disappearance what they believe it truly was — a homicide. The man who last saw her, Paul Collins, remains a person of interest. The supposed boat trip? Still unverified.Nancy’s remains? Still missing.Forty-four years later, her daughters continue to fight for answers.Subscribe to Day by Day: True Crime StoriesBuy the ebook!

We’ve all heard of people who have used children as pawns in a divorce. Maybe they’re fighting on visitation or child support payments because they don’t want to give their soon-to-be ex what they want. But in some extreme cases, the animosity and need for control can be destructive. Charles Vosseler needed to be in charge. He needed to decide where his two sons, 3-year-old CJ, and 2-year-old Billy, were at all times. So when it was clear that his marriage to his wife, Ruth, wasn’t working out, Charles hatched a plan.On October 9, 1986, this plan culminated in him kidnapping his children and keeping them hidden for decades. Over the past 30-plus years, Ruth has never given up on her children. Today, she is still out there fighting to keep their names and their faces in the public consciousness, in hopes of finally bringing them home. There is a $25,000 reward offered to anyone who can provide information leading to the location of Charles Vosseler, CJ, or Billy. If you have any information, please contact your local FBI Field Office, your local American Embassy or Consulate, or the Rochester Police at 603-335-7529.Se ofrece una recompensa de $ 25,000 a cualquiera que pueda proporcionar información que conduzca a la ubicación de Charles Vosseler, CJ o Billy. Bonus: I Got Arrested

2025-10-1301:44:03

In this bonus episode, we're not talking about a missing person. Instead, Ethan and Kona are sitting down to discuss how she got arrested in front of their house on June 11, 2025. What started off as an evening at home with family turned into her getting thrown into the back of a cop car, two court dates, and a formal complaint against a Loudoun County Sheriff's Deputy. You'll hear the whole story, including how the Sheriff's Office may be using a county statute in order to intimidate members of the community who have interactions with their deputies. This is a conversation that isn't in our normal format or subject matter, but we'll be back next week with a regularly scheduled episode.Subscribe to Day by Day: True Crime StoriesBuy the ebook!

Keith Reinhard

On August 7, 1988, Chicago sportswriter turned aspiring novelist Keith Reinhard locked up his antique shop and set out for the same mountain he’d spent the summer writing about. Keith told friends he’d be back by nightfall… but he never returned. What’s even more chilling, was that he wasn’t the first person to disappear from the small mining town of Silver Plume, Colorado. Just under a year earlier, a bookstore owner named Tom Young had similarly locked up his store and set off, only to seemingly vanish into thin air.Two vanishings, one old mining town. What dark secret connects them?If you have any information about the disappearance of Keith Reinhard, please contact the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Department at 303-679-2376.Subscribe to Day by Day: True Crime StoriesBuy the ebook!

Re-Release: Ben McDaniel

Re-Release: Ben McDaniel

2025-09-0501:02:20

“Go no farther. There’s nothing in this cave worth dying for.” Those were the words printed on the sign at the entrance of an underwater cave in Vortex Springs, Florida. Despite this plaintive warning and the drawing of the Grim Reaper that accompanied it, many divers of differing skill levels failed to heed these words in search of adventure. On August 18, 2010, 30-year-old Ben McDaniel was seen entering the water in his scuba gear. He was never seen on land again. What was at first assumed to be a tragic, yet straightforward diving accident came into question as days went by without Ben’s body being found. Did Ben get deeper into the cave than anyone could have imagined? Or did someone remove him from the water before searchers could find him? Some have questioned if Ben was ever in the water at all that night, or if something completely different happened on the ground. The only thing we know for sure is that after a decade, despite an extensive search, no one knows for sure what happened to Ben McDaniel.Anyone with information on the disappearance of Ben McDaniel is urged to call the Holmes County Sheriff's Office 850-547-3681.Subscribe to Day by Day: True Crime StoriesBuy the ebook!

Never get into a car with a stranger. That’s something everyone’s parent has told them at one point or another. Someone with whom she felt safe. But Trudy wasn’t safe, and she was never seen again after that day. Over the years, suspects have been named, and suspects have died. Now, in 2025, 29 years after Trudy was last seen, a grand jury has indicted Jamison Fisher in the murder of Trudy Appleby. This episode was originally released on September 1, 2021. We're re-releasing it this week so you can catch up before listening to our update episode. When Dennis Appleby came home during his lunch break and didn't see his 11-year-old daughter Trudy, he wasn't initially worried. It was the last days of summer and he assumed she was outside or over at a friend's house enjoying herself. But when he returned from work that evening and there was still no sign of Trudy, he knew something was wrong. Despite witnesses and even Dennis himself saying he knew who was responsible for his daughter's disappearance, Trudy Appleby's case has remained unsolved for the last 25 years. But that could all be changing soon, as police believe they are closer than ever to having the proof they need to put her abductors in prison.Subscribe to Day by Day: True Crime StoriesBuy the ebook!

Had hopes that these two intelligent podcasters would not be on the "sarah did it" bandwagon. Yet they give all benefit of the doubt to the male persons of interest, and consider Sarah with all her mental health and IQ issues as some kind of mastermind. of ANYTHING! sarah sounds like the suspect most distressed by the crime, not the most coldblooded of them. There better be some evidence to support this very wild story. conveniently there are sex offender neighbors who are somehow "uninvolved".

this case sounds similar to Arkansas's Rebecca Gould case, and in a way the Holly Bobo case. a lack of imagination in the true crime community is so annoying. like, there were neighbors; were any of them bad people? how secure was that abandoned house, with no utilities, kept? could anyone have been inside the house that did not belong there? why not burn her belongings while "destroying" evidence"?

I live about 30 miles from circle mt and this part of the country has nothing but farm fields and open land. you can see for hundreds of miles it seems like. It doesn't make sense where she went or how she disappeared because of this reason. Regardless it's a sad heartbreaking story!

have the others in the homeschooling group ever spoken about the case or the incident with the four year old?

gross to hear the host normalizing child neglect in the name of "the '80's", while claiming not wanting to make light of it. I was raised by neglectful parents in that era but they did not leave me alone at age four. it was not as widespread a practice then and was not considered okay. parents do not generally neglect their kids "for survival" either, but because they have an agenda that caring for children interferes with. the comparison with the mom charged during the job interview is unwarr

James sounds like someone having difficulty adjusting to psychiatric medication. the shaky voice, the 'lack of feelings and emotions', the perception that something is wrong with his brain, the uncharacteristic behaviors. also there may be very good reasons for the mom being "uninvolved", and perhaps for the father and others to protect her privacy.

they were not "treating her like an adult" ffs. when someone is "treated like an adult" it often has the connotation of according some respect, perceiving one as an equal, etc. what is taking place here is exploitation via "adultification" of a child. she wad being groomed, used, and exploited. have the courage to say it. and take some of the blame off the fourteen year old.

was it really common practice to leave four year olds alone in the '80's? Neither myself nor my most neglected friends were left alone at that age regardless of whatever blatantly neglectful or "normal for the 80's" parenting practices we were subjected to. why the Podcaster would even try to make this a point is odd. It seems as if she is going to great lengths to identify with this particular father on this one point. And just because he is a combat vet is no reason to lionize him. this might in fact mean he is more dangerous as a father and a husband or partner.

the father was violent with the mother while she was pregnant. He threatened to kill her. He left three little kids, under the age of five years old, all alone for three hours. So I am not really having this image management of him as some poor loving papa, wronged by police and in jail for unjust reasons, who is being denied the opportunity to look for his son -- which is how the podcasters begin this episode portraying him as.

I'm from Kingman. My only comment is, the Hualapais are pronounced Walla-pie, not who-a-la-pie

I really think the guy that groomed her online was narcissistic and abusive. I think he probably love-bombed her at the beginning which would make sense that she started doing things that were out of character for her. And then started making her feel like she needed to prove her love. So from that perspective, the way she got out of the yard makes it seem less like her being coached and more like desperation. And if he is manipulative and controlling, (which I think he obviously is) he could have convinced her that if she goes back to her family, they'll separate them.

Wait why did u not mention any of the stuff Candiss said about her day, prior to summer’s disappearance? The whole thing about the dry drowning and the milk jug and the vape pens and twisted tea and the ex-friend’s teenage son? I don’t buy into that stuff but u can’t just vaguely refer to conspiracy theories and not mention what they are.

i gotta call bs on the investigation of this case.. no detective ever who heard the highly questionable story of an intelligent, educated man choosing to irrationally dive, fully clothed, into the cold, notoriously shark infested waters of the sf bay in the middle of the night unprovoked, would merely accept this acct of circumstances on its face.. in any other instance, anywhere, at any time, if this statement were offered to an investigating officer, the first thing that would occur would be, the subject audacious enough to attempt to give that acct would b arrested, charged, and could count themselves extremely lucky if they were even afforded any semblance of a fair trial.. who is this "neighbor"? and why did he murder that poor man?

Gambling debts? It is more likely that Yong is running from slavers/human traffickers/pimps, and that they were somehow able to reach her from South Korea. She may owe them money, a ridiculously huge amount, that she cannot pay. The concept of human trafficking conveniently did not exist in our laws back then so there would be NO protection for someone like Yong, in the situation I theorize she could have been in. Our police would have laughed in her face and treated her like a criminal and a subhuman piece of garbage. If her presence endangered her older daughter, it would be best to cut that connection forever.

wow, you seem to be crying racism while breaking everything down by race, hmmm... are you also trying to say there are no all black communities that speak only, English, in the home? somehow you are trying to say that's wrong......Americans are so intolerant, so, I guess you're right.......jeez, don't have a personal agenda, just tell the story. that will go a lot further for you

"stranger danger" may be blown out of proportion yet it is perfectly justified and should not be mocked or ridiculed. I mean, ffs, they never found johnny or Eugene. although, people should be equally terrified of "law enforcement gaslighting, failure to protect, collusion, and obstructionism" when it comes to missing persons especially missing children.

You imply a lot in your introduction. Brian is doing the smart thing. The whole country is out for his blood, and none of us know the facts. Nobody with any brains would talk to the police without an attorney present. Brian is innocent until proven guilty. It is highly irresponsible of you to be putting out episodes about this case because you DON'T KNOW THE FACTS.
