On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder,  and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.”  David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death & Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish?New episodes of The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance are available every Tuesday and Friday wherever you get your podcasts. You don't want to post all of the Crime scene photos on social out of respect for Yvonne, but... if somebody wants to see them they can pay your patreon prices and suddenly your respect for Yvonne disappears. 🤔

So we're expected to believe you went to all the lengths in the previous 17 episodes, contacted all those people, invested all that time and resource before you did a deep dive in all the police files available? This podcast just lost all it's credibility, this isn't an investigation it's a docu-drama

Maggie, You and your team have done an amazing job on this case. I am in no way saying David is innocent, but wouldn’t testing the fingerprint and the DNA give NEW evidence, if it did NOT match David ? Why was this not tested 22 years ago ? Since the first investigation team failed to do this, I believe the bill should be picked up by the state at this point. Thank You.

Hunches and beliefs still isn't proof David did this. Even if he was a brute to other women and did want custody of his child, still doesn't prove anything. This case is based on testimony only. A person can spend the rest of their life in prison based on a hunch.

Dude tells 12 different stories and now all of a sudden he doesn't remember and had a blackout. I get you guys letting him bullshit you for the sake of more episodes and a longer story line. But I know you don't actually believe this guys bullshit. He's guilty and so is the guy who hired him. This is a interesting case and if he was actually innocent there would be a broad array of interesting other suspects. I just wish in the interview the guys pulled some Josh Mankiewicz type shit and called him on his bullshit. see how he reacted when it was made clear no one was buying his lying ass. like nice try, you almost could pull this off considering the Shady people that she was hanging around. But bro, you blew up your spot early on, give it up. Changing your story won't work. admit you're guilty and maybe try for parole

This episode had some brutal self-reflection & honesty. I'm enjoying the approach to the case & the team's journey. Information could have easily been ignored or swept under the rug when it doesn't fit the narrative.

come on you guys. you let this dude talk you around the evidence. and you don't ask him how the jeans got there. that's really important. this guys lying and you could have called him on it. he might be smart nowadays, but at 19 I'm sure he did some stupid things. I know he did actually (murder). I'm tired of podcast buying into innocent claims from killers to extend or make a show. the police work was sloppy and the Interrogation was horrible. but this guys guilty

Girl... I got emotional too! I'm not even sure if I believe either of the men are behind this murder at this point. But knowing what I've heard of Alliance as a whole, I believe the cops are hiding so much!

I'm curious.....Why is it an act of congress to simply answer a question at face value ? Why all of the ,ums, well you know, you know what I mean ?....If they knew what you "meant" , they wouldn't ask you ?.....It all sounds "shady".
