I’ve been known to start every sentence with “I’m doing a PhD in body image”, which is true. But I haven’t always explained WHY I’m doing a PhD…I mean, that’s a loaded question. Is it so I can humble brag about barely making minimum wage whilst thinking I might be the stupidest person alive? Is it so I can say ‘just what the doctor ordered’, when my ASOS package gets delivered? It is because I have an unrelenting desire to achieve and prove my worth, and only by making it to the perceived pinnacle of academia will I convince myself that maybe I am a person of value? WHO KNOWS…I mean the answer to all of those questions is a resounding “yes!”, but the real answer, the real catalyst for me studying relationship with food and body image in the fitness industry is a lot more simple…And for once it’s not about me!-Work with me:CoachingDisordered Eating InformedBody Image & Nutrition Review@michellecarroll1

Less than 50% of coaches can recognise the signs of disordered eating in sport. This means that clients often struggle alone, and we have no idea how to help. But, I say that's not good enough - for us as business owners or for our clients. Every single coach, no matter whether you're coaching bodybuilders or relationship with food, should be asking your clients about relationship with food and body image. And that's what we're discussing in today's episode. You'll learn:What disordered eating isWhy screening mattersHow to screen your clients (+ what to do!)-Work with me: Online coachingDisordered Eating InformedBody Image & Nutrition ReviewInstagram: @michellecarroll1
If I had a euro for everytime I heard that... I wouldn't be in Edinburgh, I'd be living in a hot country with a questionable rights record. Your body is your business card is one of the most contentious topics in the fitness industry, and thinking that your body is your business card is enough for fitness coaches to start working with me on their body image. In today's episode, we touch on all the research, and discuss:Why coaches think their body is their business cardWhy that can be harmfulWhat to do insteadAnd if you liked today's episode, make sure to like and subscribe!- Research papers mentioned:Hutson (2013) - your body is your business cardBoerner et al (2021) - PT physique & perceived competence and knowledge-Work with me: Online coachingDisordered Eating InformedBody Image & Nutrition ReviewInstagram: @michellecarroll1
Performance ≠ health - but half the fitness industry isn't ready for that conversation.
While performance goals can have positive effects on body image and self-worth, they’re not always a guarantee of a healthy relationship with exercise or food.
Michelle explores how the fitness industry often conflates performance with health, masking disordered habits like overtraining, obsessive goal-chasing, and underfuelling.
Whether you're a coach, client or somewhere in between... you need this episode!
