In this week's podcast, I work through the often-thorny topic of recruitment and onboarding, and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, outline my approach when a hire is just not working out and facing down the challenge of letting staff go.   You'll hear all about:  How promotion of strong content and a creative approach to recruitment can pay off for both recruiters and applicants  Why going with your gut instinct is key (hint: don't ignore those red flags!)  Why I believe oversharing on information and expectation levels, right from the very beginning, is key to matching the needs of the business with your hire (because the former should always come first)   How to fire effectively and manage an exit in the best way possible  Why hiring slow and firing fast is a mantra I am now firmly subscribed to.    I also offer some simple tips on:  Making sure you stand out to potential employees in an incredibly competitive market  Putting together a polished, supportive, and professional onboarding process  Considering how accessible you need to be as a recruiter, and once your hire is in post  Embedding performance management from day one, giving your new joiner the best possible opportunity to flourish in their role      About Tara Humphrey and The business of Healthcare Consulting: With nearly a decade of experience in healthcare consultancy, Tara Humphrey, founder of THC Primary Care, has successfully supported over 200 Primary Care Networks across England. Now, Tara is here to help you take your healthcare consultancy to the next level. In this episode, I share my perspective on what it feels like to deliver bad news. People in leadership positions go through this all the time, but their perspective is often not documented and it is just as hard to give bad news as it is to receive it. Join me as I share my planning and thought process on how to go about it. I share the questions I ask myself as I approach it. I talk about how to do it whether it's a formal conversation or chat over coffee, how I prepare and gather evidence and I talk about how to move on from it in a positive and constructive way. Key points to listen out for; My planning and thought process when giving bad news. How to raise the issue. What you can do to be prepared ahead of the conversation. How to look at your part in the problem. How to move forward once you've given the news. Looking at what you want to happen next. Let's get event planning!   We are all well versed in mandatory training and where development within our individual roles is measured by the 'must do' workplace-based courses but when it comes to the events we choose, how do we target those which are most likely to make the biggest impact on our personal growth, and in our learning and progression as businesses and business leaders?  I bring to you a podcast episode focused on my own approach to events planning; both in terms of benchmarking and recognising my own personal development goals, and when considering the design and delivery of THC Primary Care's own events.    Listen on to hear my advice and experiences about:    Why not to book events too far in advance (unless there are more complex travel and logistical implications When timing matters (especially when it comes to release of new guidance or embedding new process locally)  How attending events which are not necessarily role or sector-specific can also be incredibly empowering What to consider when choosing your events, and thinking carefully about what you really want to get out of them, be it; opportunities to network or connect with peers, access to industry insights and policy development, completion of formal professional development, and / or marketing your product or services   About Tara Humphrey and The business of Healthcare Consulting: With nearly a decade of experience in healthcare consultancy, Tara Humphrey, founder of THC Primary Care, has successfully supported over 200 Primary Care Networks across England. It's something even the most confident of people can worry about and I have to remember that even with the best planning in the world, sometimes you then have to take a step back. We need to prioritise, think about the pressure to contribute and become better at saying no, it's not a bad thing. It's difficult trying to balance all the plates sometimes, but take a step back, breathe and look at the bigger picture.   About Tara Humphrey and The business of Healthcare Consulting: With nearly a decade of experience in healthcare consultancy, Tara Humphrey, founder of THC Primary Care, has successfully supported over 200 Primary Care Networks across England. #8 Designing my Career

#8 Designing my Career

2025-01-0824:50

I am just following my passions, saying yes to the opportunities that interest me, taken a few risks, investing in myself and to a degree, I'm happy to make a bunch of mistakes along the way. I think that's how you design your career is unique to you. If you have the desire to do something different, a create a side hustle, or take on a project that maybe pushes you outside of your comfort zone or even change your job entirely, maybe this year is the year to do this. You do not have to be one thing or do the same thing you have always done, but it's up to you and down to you to create opportunities. I believe, in order to make this happen, you need to be a bit braver and give yourself the permission to try something different, knowing that the worse thing that could happen is you would be to simply fail. It's OK to try something and it not work. It can be emotionally painful, time-consuming and financially costly BUT lol…. Don't let that put you off. Be smart and take steps that will help you to minimise the risks. I absolutely love the career I am building, and I feel both content and excited to do more and try more.   About Tara Humphrey and The business of Healthcare Consulting: With nearly a decade of experience in healthcare consultancy, Tara Humphrey, founder of THC Primary Care, has successfully supported over 200 Primary Care Networks across England. I am discussing how to build legitimacy and enhance your creditability. Having a boundary spanning role and building legitimacy go hand in hand.  It can feel like you are constantly trying to build legitimacy and when you join a new organisation – you have to start from scratch and you have to show who you are and share your values.  Other people can build your legitimacy by word of mouth testimonial / referral and this is really important, but you still have to live up to this expectation.  Do this by trying to get to know people, make it personal and make it not all about you but showcase your experience.  Points that are discussed  Offer your help with no expectation  Quietly putting out fires in the background that other people don't know that is there.  See the light at the end of the tunnel  It's hard but so rewarding  Reflect on those little successes The most practical piece of advice I can offer is, be visible do what you say you are going to do and make the time to genuinely get to know people and be yourself.  Book mentioned in this episode  Systems Convening    About Tara Humphrey and The business of Healthcare Consulting: With nearly a decade of experience in healthcare consultancy, Tara Humphrey, founder of THC Primary Care, has successfully supported over 200 Primary Care Networks across England. Tara returns to discuss the importance of considering outside help from consultants for healthcare leaders facing challenges.   Tara provides a list of important questions for leaders to reflect on and determine if they would benefit from external support..   Tara's key takeaways: Consider hiring a consultant if you consistently miss targets, have the same recurring issues, lack clarity on strategy, or face staffing and morale problems. Be ready and committed to investing time and resources to improve the situation before seeking outside help. Think about the potential impact of resolving the issue and consider if it can be resolved internally or if outside help is needed. Ever wondered how you can turn a series of diverse job experiences into a thriving healthcare consulting business? This week, Tara shares her personal journey, recounting the thrill and challenges of negotiating her first clients, how word of mouth was crucial in securing opportunities, and the importance of patience and hard work in building a client pipeline. Here are Tara's key takeaways for this week: Mindset is key in running a business. Visualisation and manifestation can be powerful tools. Making choices that align with desired outcomes can lead to positive shifts in business. Self-awareness and honest evaluation of leadership skills are important for personal growth. Building a supportive network and choosing people carefully for support can be beneficial. It's okay to not always have a positive mindset and to seek support when needed. Financial literacy is essential for running a successful business. Don't be afraid to try new things and accept that not everything will be successful.
