Today on the podcast I’m joined by Paul and Anita Day from Vuegarden for a conversation that goes far beyond just gardening. We chat about their garden journey, their inspiring off-grid home, and their work in bed and breakfast hosting, all of which reflect a lifestyle built around nature, simplicity, and connection. We also dive into Paul’s work teaching compost and compost tea workshops, and the influence of people like Dr Elaine Ingham in shaping the way he understands soil biology and the power of living systems in the garden. This episode brings together practical ideas, personal story, and a shared passion for healthier soil, healthier food, and a more intentional way of life. If you’re interested in regenerative gardening, compost, compost teas, off-grid living, or just hearing from people doing life a little differently, there’s a lot to enjoy in this one.Follow VueGarden HERE:https://www.instagram.com/vuegarden/#1 Blend Fertiliser:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/1-blend-complete-organic-fertiliser-mixFREE Beginners Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-beginner-s-guide-to-growing-organic Intermediate Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-intermediate-guide-to-growing-organic__________________________________________________________Follow The Shed Organics HERE!Website: https://www.theshedorganics.com.auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theshedorganicsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshedorganicsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheShedOrganicsTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theshedorganicsTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/theshedorganicsLinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/jordan-alexander-794469333
This episode I am joined by Swedish biologist and macro-photographer Olle Amcoff, who is taking the world by storm with his incredible shots of the world unseen. Exploring Swedish forests and landscapes, Olle has managed to capture some incredible plant and insect species that have to be seen to be believed. To see an insect at such detail and blown up to life size, we can see the complexity and unusual forms of these unique creatures, and Olle helps us to understand how these organisms operate in our ecosystems. In this conversation we touch on Olle's process of capturing these shots, as well as how he got into the field through his love of biology and studies into different moss species. I have no doubt that you will be inspired by Olle's work and will be wanting to follow along on his journey. If you enjoyed the conversation please consider subscribing and leaving a thoughtful comment!Follow Olle HERE:https://olleamcoff.picfair.com/https://www.instagram.com/mossranger/#1 Blend Fertiliser:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/1-blend-complete-organic-fertiliser-mixFREE Beginners Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-beginner-s-guide-to-growing-organic Intermediate Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-intermediate-guide-to-growing-organic__________________________________________________________Follow The Shed Organics HERE!Website: https://www.theshedorganics.com.auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theshedorganicsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshedorganicsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheShedOrganicsTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theshedorganicsTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/theshedorganicsLinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/jordan-alexander-794469333
This week I had the pleasure of chatting with Scott Hall from Syntropia - a mastermind when it comes to understanding syntropic agroforestry and a leading educator in the field. We spoke about exactly what is meant by a syntropic system and the way in which it differs to neighbouring concepts like permaculture and regenerative farming. Many of these terms have become popular again with a resurgence towards understanding and working with the land. Scott is here to help us dissect it all and understand the best way in which we can practically manage land, in a way that maximises efficiency for both the people within the system, and the ecosystem itself. If you enjoyed this conversation, please consider dropping a comment to let me know - as well as hitting subscribe as that is the #1 thing that you can do to show your support to the podcast!Follow Scott HERE:https://www.syntropia.com.au/https://www.instagram.com/syntropia_regenerator/https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057323564737https://www.youtube.com/@syntropia_regenerator#1 Blend Fertiliser:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/1-blend-complete-organic-fertiliser-mixFREE Beginners Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-beginner-s-guide-to-growing-organic Intermediate Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-intermediate-guide-to-growing-organic__________________________________________________________Follow The Shed Organics HERE!Website: https://www.theshedorganics.com.auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theshedorganicsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshedorganicsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheShedOrganicsTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theshedorganicsTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/theshedorganicsLinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/jordan-alexander-794469333

In the modern world, when we are plagued by illness and disease, we turn to modern pharmaceutical medicines to help us feel better again. Unfortunately, many of these prescribed fixes don't actually address the root causes, and only mask symptoms. Today we are joined by Naturopath Carmen Lizasoain, who is here to discuss with us the power of healing found in our own gardens. For centuries, humans have turned to their gardens as their medicine cabinet, discovering a treatment for pretty much all that threatens our health in the plants we find around us. In this episode I’m joined by Ambre Whatley from Eden Seeds, and we dive right into the world of heirloom seeds, seed saving, and why any of this actually matters in the real world. We talk about what heirloom varieties really are, how they differ from a lot of modern commercial seed lines, and why saving seed is more than just a nice gardening hobby. It’s about independence, resilience, and keeping genetics alive that have been passed down through generations of growers, not locked up behind patents or chemical dependency.Ambre shares practical insights into how seed saving works, what people should (and shouldn’t) start with, and how everyday gardeners can play a role in protecting diversity without needing acres of land or fancy gear. We also unpack the reality of how much of the global seed supply is controlled by a handful of big corporations, including the rise of glyphosate-ready and chemically dependent seed systems, and what that means for food security long term. This conversation naturally drifts into seed sovereignty — especially in the context of uncertainty, climate pressure, supply chain disruptions, or times of crisis where access to seed really matters. It’s not about fear, it’s about preparedness, common sense, and reconnecting with systems that worked long before industrial agriculture took over.If you’ve ever wondered where your seeds actually come from, why some plants just seem stronger than others, or how saving seed could be one of the simplest acts of quiet resistance and resilience, this one’s worth a listen. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts — are you saving seed yet, or is this something you’ve been curious about trying?Follow Eden Seeds HERE:https://www.edenseeds.com.au/https://www.instagram.com/edenseedsau/https://www.facebook.com/EdenSeeds/Check out the CHILLI Side by Side series:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8JLrNZ6--BqQJ9423StG_qo_VDANQwkD#1 Blend Fertiliser:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/1-blend-complete-organic-fertiliser-mixFREE Beginners Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-beginner-s-guide-to-growing-organic NEW Intermediate Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-intermediate-guide-to-growing-organic__________________________________________________________Follow The Shed Organics HERE!Website: https://www.theshedorganics.com.auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theshedorganicsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshedorganicsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheShedOrganicsTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theshedorganicsTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/theshedorganicsLinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/jordan-alexander-794469333

This week I sat down with Cass from PlantWithCass, a Sydney-based terrarium maker and workshop host who’s all about helping people grow better little ecosystems inside glass. In this episode we dug into what actually keeps them healthy long term – the water cycle, the soil balance, airflow, light and the natural progression of plants as the system matures.Cass shared heaps of practical insight from running Sydney workshops and seeing the same questions (and mistakes) pop up again and again. We spoke about choosing plants that work not just for the first few weeks, but months down the track, thinking about how things grow upward and outward, which plants eventually create structure or shade, and why understanding that slow succession inside a closed system makes such a difference. We also talked about why glass ecosystems can sometimes look perfect when they’re built, then struggle later, how humidity, compacted soil or still air can quietly throw the balance out, and how a good terrarium is really just nature doing its thing on a mini scale.Big thanks to Cass for joining me, and thankyou as always for tuning in. In this episode I sit down with Bohdi from Fran’s Hydroponics here in Brisbane to dive into a world I’ve been genuinely curious about for a long time — hydroponics, and what it really means for the future of growing food.We chat about the big differences between soil-based gardening and hydro systems, from how the plants feed, to the role of nutrients, to what that means for the flavour and quality of the final harvest. I loved hearing Bodhi’s perspective on why hydroponics isn’t “better or worse”, just different, and how each approach has its place depending on what you’re trying to grow.We also dig into the idea of hydro as a potential solution for the challenges we’re facing in today’s food system. Could urban apartments, small homes, and high-rise buildings become mini farms? Can people produce genuinely healthy food for themselves even without soil and space? It was a really grounded and refreshing conversation that opens up a lot of possibilities.Bohdi walks me through the gear too — lighting, humidity, airflow, nutrient management, and how to set up an indoor grow space so plants actually thrive. If you’ve ever looked at hydroponics and thought, “It’s too complicated,” this episode will make it feel a lot more achievable.Really enjoyed this chat and I think you will too.If you want to learn more about what Bohdi and the team are doing, check out Fran’s Hydroponics in Brisbane.Follow Fran's Hydroponics HERE:https://franshydroponics.com.au/https://www.instagram.com/frans_hydroponics/NEW Intermediate Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-intermediate-guide-to-growing-organic#1 Blend Fertiliser:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/1-blend-complete-organic-fertiliser-mixFREE Beginners Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-beginner-s-guide-to-growing-organic __________________________________________________________Follow The Shed Organics HERE!Website: https://www.theshedorganics.com.auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theshedorganicsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshedorganicsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheShedOrganicsTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theshedorganicsTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/theshedorganicsLinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/jordan-alexander-794469333
In this episode, I sit down with Nick from Belvedere Farms here in Queensland — a family who’ve taken run-down, chemical heavy land and turned it into a living, breathing example of what real, regenerative food can be. Our conversation isn’t just about farming techniques; it’s about the slow, steady work of building soil, nurturing community, and letting the land teach you as much as you shape it.Nick shares openly about the journey he and his family have been on and the joy in seeing healthy soil come back to life. It's the bigger purpose behind growing food that genuinely nourishes people. We dive into what it means to grow with intention, to work with nature rather than pushing against it, and how these small, daily decisions can ripple out into something much larger than a single farm. This is one of those grounded, honest chats that leaves you thinking about where your food comes from and how much is possible when people commit to doing things the right way!Remember, if you enjoyed the conversation, be sure to show it to your friends, or even let me know what you liked in the comments below... thankyou!Follow Belvedere HERE:https://www.belvederefarm.com.au/https://www.facebook.com/belvederefarmers/https://www.instagram.com/belvederefarmers/NEW Intermediate Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-intermediate-guide-to-growing-organic#1 Blend Fertiliser:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/1-blend-complete-organic-fertiliser-mixFREE Beginners Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-beginner-s-guide-to-growing-organic __________________________________________________________Follow The Shed Organics HERE!Website: https://www.theshedorganics.com.auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theshedorganicsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshedorganicsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheShedOrganicsTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theshedorganicsTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/theshedorganicsLinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/jordan-alexander-794469333

In this episode, I sit down with Miles Filipeli to take a clear and practical look at fermentation for soil health — focusing on Fermented Plant Extracts (FPEs) and how they can improve nutrient availability, plant resilience, and overall garden vitality.I'm a huge fan of Miles, and he has extensive experience teaching growers and home gardeners how to create their own biological inputs using local plant material, microbes, and time. His approach is rooted in observation, simplicity, and working with natural processes, rather than relying on synthetic or imported products. We discuss:• What defines a true fermented plant extract• Selecting plants with intention — and what local “weeds” can indicate about soil conditions• The microbial dynamics that make nutrients more plant-available• How ferments support disease resistance, mineral uptake, and flavour density• Key principles for brewing successful FPEs at home• Common mistakes and how to avoid them• When, where, and how to apply ferments effectively in the gardenThis conversation is centred around practical skill-building, improving soil function, and gaining confidence in creating your own fertility inputs on-site. Whether you’re growing a home garden or managing a larger-scale system, this episode offers grounded guidance on working with living biology to build healthier soil and healthier plants.Follow Miles HERE:https://fermentedplantextracts.com/https://www.instagram.com/fermentedplantextracts/https://www.facebook.com/fermentedplantextractsNEW Intermediate Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-intermediate-guide-to-growing-organic#1 Blend Fertiliser:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/1-blend-complete-organic-fertiliser-mixFREE Beginners Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-beginner-s-guide-to-growing-organic __________________________________________________________Follow The Shed Organics HERE!Website: https://www.theshedorganics.com.auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theshedorganicsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshedorganicsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheShedOrganicsTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theshedorganicsTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/theshedorganicsLinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/jordan-alexander-794469333

In this episode I’m joined by Jade Miles, co-founder of Black Barn Farm in north-east Victoria — a thriving u-pick orchard and learning space where she and her family live out the values of what she calls Futuresteading: living like tomorrow matters. We talk about the growing ache so many of us feel — that sense of disconnection from land, food, and community — and how small, intentional choices can help us find our way back. Jade shares stories from her life on the farm, what it means to live regeneratively, and why ritual, belonging and slowing down matter more than ever. It’s a gentle, grounding conversation about remembering our place in nature and rebuilding the threads that hold us to each other and the earth.Follow Jade HERE:https://linktr.ee/blackbarnfarmfuturesteadinghttps://www.instagram.com/black_barn_farm/NEW Intermediate Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-intermediate-guide-to-growing-organic#1 Blend Fertiliser:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/1-blend-complete-organic-fertiliser-mixFREE Beginners Organic Growers Guide:https://www.theshedorganics.com.au/product-page/ultimate-beginner-s-guide-to-growing-organic __________________________________________________________Follow The Shed Organics HERE!Website: https://www.theshedorganics.com.auFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theshedorganicsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theshedorganicsYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheShedOrganicsTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theshedorganicsTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/theshedorganicsLinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/jordan-alexander-794469333
