So for today’s second part of this episode, we’ll be dissecting the idea of degrowth. Degrowth, which prioritizes ecological sustainability and social well-being, is the deliberate reduction of energy and resource consumption to bring economies into harmony with the natural world. Degrowth challenges the status quo of measuring economic well-being based on the capitalistic hegemonic order. It is not just a recession; rather, it is a purposeful process meant to lessen the negative effects of economic activity on the environment while maintaining a fair and balanced allocation of resources. It's also become a hot topic in popular debate of what constitutes a successful economy under the guise of the free market and consumerism, and measuring growth solely based on Gross Domestic Product GDP. I had the opportunity to learn more about degrowth during a perceptive dialogue with Claudius Gräbner-Radkowitsch, who is a Junior Professor at the Europa University Flensburg in Northern Germany. We learn why degrowth is such a contentious phrase because it questions the conventional wisdom that measures standard of living and prosperity using the capitalistic system, as degrowth advocates to protect natural resources and guarantee environmental justice for all through sufficiency. Stay tuned to learn more about this hotly debated idea for part two of this episode. Here's the episode overview:Assessing Degrowth in a Degrowth EconomyEnsuring Fairness in the Shift to DegrowthPublic Policy and Regulations Supporting DegrowthThe (Carbon) Emission Trading System and its ImpactsSustainable Swaps: Public Facilities/Transportation in the EUThe Future of Degrowth: A Pragmatic ApproachTechnology’s Role in a Sustainable FutureFinal Thoughts on Degrowth and Sustainability------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Music creditsBe Forest (2014).Sparkle. From Reefer Madness to being 4/20 friendly, the culture around cannabis or “pot,” “marijuana,” ”hash” or what have you culture is ever expanding. I had the opportunity to learn more about hemp and cannabis and their potential as a sustainable swap or eco-friendly alternative in today's episode. I had a thoughtful conversation with Julyan Levy, a PhD candidate and researcher from Coventry University in the United Kingdom. In addition to being a strong supporter of small-scale urban agriculture methods for the medical and recreational use of cannabis, Julyan's research interests center on the link between humans and cannabis as well as plant agency itself. We also go into greater detail on how the cross-comparison between the legalization of cannabis differs in the UK and Canada. To find out more about how cannabis can help create a more environmentally friendly future, stay tuned. Here's the episode overview:Personal reflectionsJourney into Cannabis ResearchUnderstanding Cannabis and Its BenefitsDefining Cannabis, CBD & HempSustainability and Its ChallengesResearch Focus: Non-Capitalistic Economic RelationshipThe Complexity of Human-Plant RelationshipsMaking the Invisible VisibleAcknowledging Indigenous KnowledgeInnovation in Cannabis ProductionMedical Marijuana and the Opiod CrisisEnvironmental Justice and AccessibilityAdvocating for Sustainable PracticesEnvironmental Issues in the Cannabis SectorEnvironmental Impact of the Cannabis SectorMisunderstandings about Cannabis and SustainabilityRacism and Cannabis ProhibitionLocal Sourcing and Sustainability in CannabisPolicy Interventions for Sustainable Cannabis Practices------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Music creditsBe Forest (2014).Sparkle. So for today's episode, we explore sustainable fashion and AI by sitting down for an insightful convo with OpenWardrobe AI's founder, Julia Dietmar. OpenWardrobe is an AI-powered digital wardrobe and outfit planning tool that helps users organize their belongings, put together looks, and choose eco-friendly items. By uploading or taking pictures of clothing, it digitizes closets, classifies them, provides styling tips and outfit recommendations, and even schedules outfits according to the weather and calendar. By uploading pictures of their clothing, users can build a virtual closet that the software can organize by color, neckline, pattern, style, and occasion. It integrates pieces from their digital wardrobe and makes outfit recommendations based on future events and personal style preferences. By assisting users to become conscious consumers in utilizing their existing clothing collection and making informed purchasing decisions, the app advocates for mindfulness and minimalism. So today is an exclusive, in-depth spiel on my personal experience studying abroad in Sweden. As a Canadian who relocated to Visby, Gotland, Sweden in August 2023 for graduate school I detail my experience of my exchange from the getgo, for example, from why I chose Scandinavia/Sweden for sustainabe development and business management studies, the coursework itself, my eco-friendly lifestyle chanage in which I embarked on an island challenge, advice for those hoping to study abroad and why I recommend it. So today we do an in-depth spiel for the second part of the so-called “Anthropocene.” According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) the "Anthropocene" is a geological epoch believed to have emerged due to human-driven changes to the Earth's composition and operation, particularly the climate system. But in terms of climate change, some detractors of the Anthropocene claim that it ignores alternatives (that is, there is no direction on how to genuinely maintain human progress within safe operating space) and supports a weak sustainability agenda and green growth using the disputed terminology of the SDGs about climate change. Consequently, it normalizes capitalist/industrial modernity as the only viable option for humanity. Economic growth and ecological modernization result in technological solutions to biodiversity loss, and human life, especially that which is consistent with the capitalist/industrial mindset, is prioritized over the planet's other flora and fauna. So to understand more about this phenomenon I had a conversation with an American academic Erle Ellis, an American academic from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, teaches geography and environmental systems, focusing on human landscape ecology for sustainable biosphere stewardship. According to Ellis, the term and its authentic meaning has been contested and given numerous interpretations over the years, with Paul Crutzen coining it in 2000 to describe the impact of human societies on the environment. However, the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy rejected the idea in 1952, disregarding the overwhelming evidence of human societies' global changes. Stay tuned for part 2 of this episode to learn more on what the Anthropocene entails. Here's the episode overview:Intro to Dr. Ellis and his workUnderstanding Sustainability and DevelopmentThe Concept of the AnthropoceneThe Role of Human Societies in Environmental ChangeResearch Philosophy and Core ValuesExploring the Anthropocene’s Impact on Climate ChangePerspectives on the Anthropocene and its MiusesUnderstanding Systems Thinking in Environmental ContextsBeyond Zer-Sum Thinking: A Positive FutureDegrowth: A Controversial PerspectiveHuman Activities and their Impact on the Planet -------------------------------------------------------------Music creditsBe Forest (2014).Sparkle. So today we are all about championing youth activism towards climate action, especially in an international/global context, from Sweden to South Korea and Canada. I had a dialogue with a Swedish academic and post-doctoral researcher from Lund University, Yi Hyun Kang, whose specialty is environmental politics. Currently, she is conducting a BECC study on the governance of biodiversity and the global climate, paying close attention to institutional reactions and interactions. Her areas of interest are international relations, development on climate change and biodiversity, policy process analysis, and the decision-making processes of environmental politics with an emphasis on climate change and biodiversity. Her job experiences in research, international development, and journalism have shaped her interests. For today’s episode, I learned more about how the upcoming generation of young people is mobilized and influenced towards organizing strikes and engaging in policy advocacy. Here's the episode overview:Icebreaker and Personal InsightsCuriosities and Uncertainties in ResearchTransition from Journalism to Environmental ResearchDefining Sustainable Development and Its ChallengesPolitical Perspectives on Environmental Governance Core Values in Environmental ResearchYouth Activism and Climate ActionEnvironmental Justice and Its ImplicationsComparative Perspectives on Climate Activism The Role of Media in Climate MovementsCitizen Activism and Just Sustainabilities Environmental Justice and Social Equity Skills For Change Makers in Environmental PoliticsThe Role of Climate Action in Scandinavian CountriesCultural Perspectives of Environmentalism in South KoreaEducation and Environmental AwarenessPolitical Campaigns and the Ecological TurnGreta Thunberg: A Symbol of Youth Actvism Ecological Modernization and Sustainability Advice for Citizen Activism and EngagementSustainable U End Note-------------------------------------------------------------Music creditsBe Forest (2014).Sparkle. The Reb Rebel Brigade is an international performance activist troupe that utilizes silent, slow-motion performance and non-violent civil disobedience towards climate action, drawing attention to the burgeoning global ecological crisis, symbolizing the loss of life from environmental destruction. Participating members in the acts of protest are depicted for their distinctive appearance as they don vivacious scarlet red robes, veils, and gloves alongside opaque white face paint. The color itself is symbolic of the “lifeblood that connects all species,” as the mantra goes, advocating against animal cruelty and for environmental stewardship. I first came across the RRB during my travels overseas studying abroad in Visby, Sweden last summer in June 2024. I was simply mesmerized by their unwavering dramatics as the red rebels drifted elegantly through the heart of the Old Town’s main square. It leaves a worthwhile and lingering impression for onlookers who fussily try to clue in on what the act itself depicts. It was fascinating to discover how the artistic medium of performance activism can mobilize others to gain a sense of agency and adopt an ethic of care toward combating the climate crisis. In this inside scoop and in-depth two-part episode series, we invite you to learn more about the Red Rebel Brigade and its revelation with its founder Doug Francisco, a multidisciplinary artist, activist, and storyteller who has a background in music, street performance, and theatre. In today's somewhat playful episode, we discover that we gotta catch em' all using the popular gaming app Pokemon Go, particularly about digital gamification and educational practices. Pokemon Go, which celebrated its 25th anniversary, has gained popularity due to its portrayal of domesticated pets as magical creatures competing on the field. Initially, this led to criticism for encouraging animal cruelty and other issues. However, as the app gained popularity, it has been used to explore ecosystems, habitat preservation, and the impact of human activity on wildlife.Australian researchers Amber McLeod and Kelly Carabott discuss the potential of using Pokemon Go's purpose to promote environmental stewardship. Amber focuses on using technology to promote student learning and develop transferable skills, while Kelly focuses on how digital technology is used in homes, schools, and childhood. Both researchers explore how gamification can support educational learning and development. In conclusion, the use of Pokemon Go and digital gamification in education can have a positive impact on environmental stewardship and student learning. By examining the use of technology in education and gamification, we can better understand the potential benefits of using digital technology in education. So today we had the opportunity to be more experimental in addressing sustainable development, gender equality, and environmentalism. I sat down for a conversation with a researcher from my alma mater at the University of Calgary, Professor Joe Kadi, a researcher based in the Gender and Sexuality Studies department whose research focuses on intersectional feminism, environmental issues and social justice and community. One of the more popular fan favourite courses in gender studies chosen by students is “ecofeminism” a course that has been taught by him as he utilizes experiential and interactive role-play learning to engage students to understand the more than human world. In shedding light on International Women's Day (#IWD) 2025 and the theme of "accelerate action" elaborating on the urgency of advancing gender equality the emerging ecofeminism movement is more relevant than ever. So for today’s episode, we opted to learn more about the so-called green transition in the Canadian workforce by conversing with Geni Peters, the Research Lead for ECO Canada. If anything, this is quintessential for enabling a skilled workforce for the environmental sector to ensure a net-zero future by 2050. ECO Canada is an environmental steward for the Canadian environmental sector. It does so by championing initiatives such as promoting sustainable economic growth and by supporting innovative labour solutions that will foster a new era of climate change advocacy across Canada. For example, through educational seminars, workshops, and professional environmental designations. For today’s spiel, I had the chance to connect with the head of research development to learn more about Canada’s trajectory in championing a sustainable tomorrow. Here's the episode overview:The Role of ECO CanadaPersonal Journey and ActivismChallenges and Rewards in Non-profit WorkMotivation and Burnout in Climate ActionUnderstanding Calgary Climate HubDefining SustainabilityCommunity Cohesion and EmpowermentSkills for Changemakers in Climate ActionCitizen Activism and Just SustainabilityEmpowering Citizen ActivismMeasuring Social ImpactMobilizing Marginalized CommunitiesYouth Leadership in SustainabilityCommunicating Sustainable InitiativesThe Debate on DegrowthPolicy Interventions for SustainabilityGetting Involved in Climate AdvocacyAdvice for Innovative Sustainable ChangeFuture Vision for Climate Advocacy Sustainable U End NoteMusic creditsBe Forest (2014).Sparkle. So today I had a lively discourse with an Australian neuroscientist based in the UK and the Lead Policy Fellow for Mental Health at Imperial College London whose research focuses on environmentalism and mental health. Dr. Lawrance is a Mental Health Innovations Fellow at the Institute of Global Health Innovation where she works in digital mental health support and climate change initiatives. We particularly want to learn more about climate anxiety for today's recount. And in doing so, have a hearty dialogue on this emerging crisis. Stay tuned to be awed again by this unwavering eco-lution of knowledge. Here's the episode overview:Introduction to Sustainable U PodcastIntroduction and Personal InsightsNavigating Uncertainty and CuriosityStruggles and Aspirations in Climate ActionSatisfaction and Challenges in Climate ResearchMotivation and Coping with BurnoutCore Values in Research PracticesDefining Sustainable Development and its ChallengesThe Intersection of Climate and Mental HealthDirect Effects of Climate Change on Mental WellbeingUnderstanding Climate Anxiety and Eco AnxietyThe Psychological Responses to Environmental DegradationResistance to Change and the Path ForwardCorporate Accountability and Climate CommunicationFinal ThoughtsEngagement and Community FeedbackSustainable U End Note------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Music creditsBe Forest (2014).Sparkle. Green Calgary is a leading urban environmental charity supporting Calgarians to become more sustainable in working, learning, living and playing. Originally begun as an initiative in the late 1970s Green Calgary has been advocating and encouraging others to adopt a more eco-friendly and greener lifestyle allowing for a healthier local community for our city and beyond. Green Calgary showcases a diverse palette of public educational programming from the getgo of providing experiential learning from grade school children to transitioning blue/white collar professionals. So for today’s recounting of environmental literature and climate action storytelling, I reached out to a UK-based author and researcher of sustainable business practice at the University of Southampton, Dr. Denise Baden. She is showcased on the Forbes list of Climate Leaders Changing the Film and TV Industry. Dr. Baden’s research aim focuses on how we can utilize mostly fictional Narrative motifs to motivate green or eco-friendly behaviours. But we’re particularly interested in her published work and eco-themed novels such as “No Habitat Man,” which she’ll speak about later. And of course, the Green Stories Writing project which brings together like-minded creative writers to compete in a literary competition. For today’s episode, I had an in-depth dialogue on how we can conjure up various climate storytelling tropes toward environmentalism positively and effectively.
