All indications out of Chapel Hill point to the university being ready to move on from Davis following the shocking first round NCAA Tournament loss to VCU. The mechanics of how the separation happens appear to be the remaining variable. But the direction the university is heading seems clear enough that Ovies & Giglio are treating this episode as the honest accounting of how Hubert Davis ended up here — and how dramatically different everything looked just three weeks ago. And when UNC makes Davis' status official — who do the Tar Heels go after? North Carolina basketball has a standard. It was set by Dean Smith and sustained by Roy Williams. In five years under Hubert Davis the Tar Heels have not met it. Making it more complicated — Jon Scheyer has built something real at Duke under the similar circumstances or replacing a legend. Start with Duke — because Giglio needs a moment. The Blue Devils come into March Madness as back-to-back ACC Tournament Champions with the most proven defensive identity in college basketball.
