On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by blogger and podcast Chris Ostrander to discuss a handful of Buffalo Sabres and Bills topics, including a few fixable but nonetheless late season issues creeping into the Sabres as they get ready to embark on a playoff run soon.
Just saying the Sabres are readying to embark on a playoff run is amazing given where this team was at in early December not to mention the previous 14 seasons. They're not exactly "struggling" either as the season winds down but in the interest of staying objective, there's a handful of things going on that could be concerning. The guys discuss some, including the third line defense that seems significantly worse without Zach Metsa in the lineup, some leaky goaltending from Alex Lyon, a handful of offensive players struggling a little bit and penalty kill unit that's gotten destroyed two times in the past eight days.
Also, Chris is asked which team is closer to winning a championship right now--the Sabres or Bills?
Speaking of the Bills they're discussed too and Patrick explains why he's starting to very much get behind taking a wide receiver with their first round pick. That plus will Lindy Ruff stay on with the Sabres after this season and much more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to discuss several Buffalo Bills topics, including evaluating each of Brandon Beane's free agent classes since becoming GM of the team in 2018.
While not a fan of Beane in general, Joe has confessed to liking what the Bills have done so far since free agent season began earlier this month. It got the guys wondering and then researching of Beane's offseason classes and where this one stacks up.
Also, the Bills re-signed Damar Hamlin this week and a few sarcastic tweets from Patrick set off a firestorm of criticism from the Damar truthers. Patrick responds to all of it.
Meanwhile, the somewhat slumping Buffalo Sabres won a shootout game against Seattle on Saturday that even if it actually wasn't----it felt like a "must win" type of game. The guys discuss it, where it feels the team is at as we get ready for the playoffs and much more.

On this Saturday episode of Talking Buffalo, it's an edition of The Podbag featuring listener submitted questions and takes about the Buffalo Bills that Patrick Moran is answering, including potential trade candidates currently on the Buffalo Bills roster.
It's not likely the Bills will trade anyone who's already currently on the roster, but it's certainly a possible. Patrick explains why he thinks Keon Coleman is the obvious choice, why Sedrick Van Pran Granger is lowkey a realistic choice and why if you want go with a little shock value----O'Cyrus Torrence could be a big time dark horse candidate.
Also, what's the current biggest Bills strength beyond Josh Allen? Running back, tight end and offensive line rooms all remain strong but Patrick thinks the Bills secondary could potentially be the strongest part of this 2026 team.
Who's Patrick's current preferred first-round pick for Buffalo? That plus Terrel Bernard will be a critical piece for the Bills, a few TV show recommendations and much more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran discusses a pair of Buffalo Bills defensive players in Max Hairston and Terrell Bernard that appear sharpied in as starters that have plenty to prove in 2026.
Terrel Bernard is a starting off ball linebacker, dictated by the contract he signed before the 2025 season and enforced by the Bills lack of additions to the room so far this offseason. The potential is certainly there, as evidenced by his breakout 2023 campaign but the past few years have been filled with injuries and pedestrian production. Can Bernard be a good fit in this new Jim Leonhard defense? Brandon Beane is banking on it.
A first-round pick a year ago, Max Hairston's first season was hampered by two injuries, one that kept him from the field until almost the middle of the season and another that knocked him out of the playoffs. Last season he semi-platooned with Tre White but this time around it seems Hairston's locked in as a starter alongside Christian Benford. What's the confidence level of Hairston taking the role and running with it?
That plus a few conclusions you can make about Sean McDermott based on this offseason and plenty more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren from SB Nation to discuss some of the work Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills still have to do for the shaping of a roster they hope will be good enough to finally get them over the hump here in 2026.
Beane entered the offseason in less than ideal cap shape but the Bills have still managed to make a handful of meaningful adds to the roster, from trading for DJ Moore to signing Bradley Chubb, CJ Gardner Johnson, Dee Alford and Geno Stone, not to mention re-signing center Connor McGovern. Matt has thoughts on what the Bills have done so far during this process.
From there they spend time discussing a handful of positions that at the very least, are screaming for veteran and/or rookie draft pick help when it comes to depth. The guys go over potential solutions at positions that include defensive tackle, edge rusher, off ball linebacker, cornerback, wide receiver and possibly the offensive line.
They also highlight a handful of draft prospects and positions that most intrigue them when it comes to the draft. That and plenty more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by broadcaster Steve Bermel to discuss a handful of Buffalo Sabres and Bills topics, including how the Sabres have managed to avoid a complete slop of a playoff race in the Eastern conference.
While it's not mathematically locked in yet, the Sabres are going to break their historic 14-year NHL playoff drought within the next few weeks. Buffalo currently leads Tampa in the Atlantic division (though Tampa has two games in hand) and are only one point back of Carolina for most points in the conference. Regardless if the Sabres win the conference and/or division or not, one thing Sabres fans have been saved from is the anxiety of a playoff spot race. Buffalo's torrid place has them a full tier above several other teams in the conference and that's a good thing of course, because the East is just a slop with a half dozen teams within three points of being in the playoffs or out entirely. Montreal, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Boston, New York Islanders and Columbus are all stacked near each other with points, not to mention Ottawa still having a fair shot at getting in as well.
The guys talk about while there's the pressure of trying to get a high seed and home ice advantage, at least they can enjoy the next few weeks without having to worry about making the playoffs.
Also, is there again a good chance Alex Tuch re-ups with Buffalo after the season now?
On the football side, Steve gives his thoughts on what he's seen from the Bills so far this offseason and if it's enough for him to be confident in this roster going into the NFL draft in about a month. That plus an update on the Buffalo Bandits and much more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to discuss several Buffalo Bills and Sabres topics, including an explanation of what the "Josh Allen Rub" is and means in addition to noticing Sabres fandom is as alive as it's been in 20 years.
Most wrestling fans know what the terms "getting the rub" and "go away heat" mean. Joe recently used those wrestling terms to tie into a blog post about the Bills MVP quarterback in addition to Bills general manager Brandon Beane. Joe explains exactly what he meant by it and how the Bills have used Allen in situations to gain popularity points.,
The guys also talk about the Bills offseason to this point so far, with Joe arriving at that the team has done a pretty good job but many fans don't see it because they're mad at Beane. Meanwhile, Patrick is looking at a defense that is badly (very badly) lacking depth not to mention a questionable starter or two currently at the top of the team's depth chart.
Also, the Sabres remain ridiculously hot and Patrick's noticed a huge trend of fans sporting Sabres game recently at bars, restaurants and basically everywhere. It's been a long time coming and wonderful to see. That plus Joe's binging The Pitt and plenty more.

On this rare Saturday edition of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is sharing his thoughts on every addition the Buffalo Bills have made so far this offseason in addition to what he thinks may lie ahead for the organization.
After yesterday's episode focused on what the Bills have lost since the end of last season, today's about what the Bills have gained and how much of an upgrade he thinks Buffalo's made at some important positions.
Patrick has thoughts on the Bills surprisingly retaining Connor McGovern to keep the offensive line mostly intact, swinging a significant trade for wide receiver DJ Moore, adding defensive edge/linebacker Bradley Chubb to the defensive front seven, rolling the dice with the high risk/high reward safety in CJ Gardner Johnson, adding safety depth in Geno Stone and finding Taron Johnson's likely replacement.
Also discussed are what Bills free agents are still available as of this recording and who Patrick may have an interest in seeing returning in addition to what could still be in play for Bills additions in the weeks to come, how much of an upgrade does this team feel like right now and much more.

Today on Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is back from a vacation (of sorts) in Florida and shares his thoughts on every move the Buffalo Bills have made so far this offseason, big and small in the first part of a two episode series.
Today's first part focuses primarily on what the Bills no longer have. Patrick has thoughts on the releases of Taylor Rapp, Curtis Samuel and Dane Jackson as well as a late round pick swap in the Taron Johnson trade, and while Johnson's time with Buffalo certainly looked like it was over when Sean McDermott was fired, Patrick hopes that history shows Taron as one of the better clutch players in this era of Bills football.
Patrick also goes over the free agents who are now former Buffalo Bills. While it sucked losing David Edwards, Patrick is happy to see him to get paid and doesn't blame Brandon Beane for not paying him the contract Edwards got with New Orleans. However, Patrick's definitely not happy about losing Cam Lewis and borderline incensed that Reggie Gilliam went to New England.
That plus thoughts on Dawson Knox staying, why QB2 matters more than most think and plenty more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Chris Ostrander to discuss several Buffalo Sabres and Bills topics, including a four-game road trip this week for the Sabres that could go a long way in determining where they finish in the Eastern conference standings.
The Sabres have been the best team in the NHL over the past three-plus months, literally. They're best in the league in points, goals scored, goal differential, save percentage and percentage of time playing with a lead. It's seriously mind blowing. The guys talk about how this team has somehow been able to put together a prolonged stretch of Sabres hockey that has fans as excited about this team as they've been in at least the past 20 years.
Buffalo embarks on a four game western swing this week that could ultimately have serious ramifications on where they finish in the standings. The Sabres are (unofficially) locked into the playoff but with seven of their final 11 games at home, having a good road trip keeps them in serious play for winning the Atlantic division and perhaps even the Eastern conference.
Also, is Lindy Ruff looking like a lock to win the Jack Adams trophy for NHL Coach of the Year? That plus Chris has thoughts on the Bills offseason so far and much more. Be sure to follow Chris on X at @2ITB_Buffalo and check out the Two in the Box blog in addition to the Instigator Podcast.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by PK from the Buffalo Sports Collective to discuss among other topics Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane taking a big swing by signing defensive edge Bradley Chubb and if his biggest moves over the past few years should be considered aggressive or reckless?
When healthy, Chubb is a dynamic run defending edge with plenty of pass rushing juice. That said, he's torn both his ACLs throughout his eight year career and it continues a trend of Beane signing big named defenders with significant injury histories in his attempts to help get the Buffalo defense over the hump. The guys give their thoughts on the Chubb signing and if they think Beane did the right thing or is once again playing with fire.
Also, the Bills lack of moves to this point in a mostly dried up free agent market certainly gives indication that Buffalo plans on relying on young guys like Dorian Williams, Dorian Williams and Jordan Hancock to play a lot of very meaningful snaps for the defense this season.
They also talk about the Buffalo Sabres and this amazing season that continues to keep getting better. That and plenty more today.
That and plenty more thoughts before Patrick travels south and catches up to whatever Bills news is missed on tomorrow’s show. You can follow PK on Twitter @PK_BSC and check out the Buffalo Sports Collective podcast.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran shares thoughts on several Buffalo Bills and Sabres topics, ranging from thinking people are prematurely writing off Bills receiver Josh Palmer to giving props to Alex Tuch for how he's been able to bury contract talks and focus on playing elite hockey.
Prefacing by saying this episode is being recorded the morning before a release---typically a big no-no during a busy week like the start of NFL free agency, Patrick has plenty to say about the Bills before leaving to travel. Among the topics is starting to realize that the Bills may be counting on some younger guys on defense to be factors more than fans are---a list that could include Dorian Williams, Jordan Hancock and TJ Sanders. Patrick also takes a look at what some of the receivers are getting in this year's open market and concludes that if he can stay healthy this time around, Palmer has the ability to become a nice bargain for the Bills this year as opposed to being resigned of having the same fate that Curtis Samuel just had previously.
On the hockey side, the Sabres just continue to roll over teams as they emphatically march towards ending their historic 14-year playoff drought. Tuch has played a big role in that. He never received the contract he was hoping for in the last year of his deal and that could've been a distraction for him in the team. Only it hasnt----Tuch has kept the business stuff away from his game and has been magnificent for the Sabres throughout the season.
That and plenty more thoughts before Patrick travels south and catches up to whatever Bills news is missed on tomorrow's show.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to discuss how the NFL legal tampering is coming to an end and the Buffalo Bills added very little and meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres may never lose a hockey game again.
At least as of late into Tuesday night, the Bills have only added cornerback Dee Alford and backup quarterback Kyle Allen to the roster externally with a market that's quickly drying up. Sure, they've already traded for DJ Moore, re-signed Connor McGovern and worked out a deal to keep Dawson Knox and that's meaningful of sure, but Patrick's already mighty frustrated at Brandon Beane seeming to be a little too content with personnel on the defensive side of the ball, at least so far.
One major name being connected to the Bills is edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. However, with the Max Crosby trade falling apart for Baltimore, Patrick thinks it's a formality that Baltimore ends up with Hendrickson, possibly even by the time you listen to this.
Meanwhile, the Sabres remain an absolute wagon as they defeated San Jose in front of an excited Key Bank Center crowd, improving to a perfect 8-0 since the Olympic break. That and plenty more today!

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is reacting to several of the biggest moves made around the NFL in day one of the legal tampering period in addition to a few Buffalo Bills moves unlikely to move the needle much.
Prior to Monday's start of unofficial free agency the Bills had already pulled off a trade for wide receiver DJ Moore in addition to re-signing center Connor McGovern to a lucrative extension over the weekend. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that the Bills didn't make any kind of real splash on Monday. They did add Atlanta slot cornerback Dee Alford to the team as well as bringing back former quarterback (and Josh Allen buddy) Kyle Allen and re-signing punter Mitch Wishnowsky. Patrick has opinions on all three moves.
The Bills, as expected did lose some veterans to other teams on Monday. Patrick has thoughts on guard David Edwards going to the New Orleans Saints, Mitch Trubisky to the Tennesssee Titans and the New England Patriots poaching fullback Reggie Gilliam away, something that Patrick's admittedly bothered by.
He also discusses some of the biggest moves around the league in what was a very (very) active and eventful day, including Mike Evans off to San Francisco, Tyler Linderbaum blowing up the center market and John Franklin Myers heading to Tennessee. That and plenty more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to discuss how the time is now for Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane to pull the pin on at least a handful of moments that could determine if the Bills realistically remain in the Super Bowl hunt in addition to the Sabres winning one of their most exciting games in the history of the franchise literally right before this recording.
NFL free agency, or at least the "legal tampering period" starts here on Monday and the Bills certainly got a decent amount of holes to fill on the roster. A less than ideal amount of cap room coupled with a plethora of needs both with starters and depth will force Beane and his staff to be at his best starting today and over the next few months. The guys discuss some of those roster holes the Bills have to work on and what some solutions may ultimately lead to being.
They also react to a trio of big Bills news items that've went on over the past handful of days leading into the start of free agency: trading for DJ Moore, cutting cornerback Taron Johnson and re-signing center Connor McGovern over the weekend.
For fun, they also play a game of trying to guess the next team several of their recently released and pending free agent Bills end up with.
Of course, the Sabres remain steaming hot and won what could be argued as one of the greatest games in franchise history on Sunday night. The guys talk about them and much more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran has a bunch of reaction both good and bad to the Buffalo Bills pulling off a big trade on Thursday, acquiring wide receiver DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears along with a fifth-rounder in exchange for their second-round pick in this year's NFL Draft.
To say the immediate reaction among Bills fans, media and content creators is a mixed bag is an understatement, and Patrick thinks there's plenty to like about the move as well as a few things that certainly give him pause.
First and foremost, Moore immediately becomes the Bills best pass catching option in the intermediate to long yard situations and it's not close either. He comes to Buffalo with plenty of proven success as he turns 29 years old this week including four seasons of over 1,000 yards receiving. Two of those, by the way came with Bills head coach back when Brady was offensive coordinator in Carolina in 2020-21. Also, while Moore may not be definition a "true No. 1" receiver, Patrick thinks more of his ability than had the Bills signed Romeo Doubs or Rashid Shaheed in free agency, who felt more like extensions of Curtis Samuel and Josh Palmer types.
However, this isn't a win for the Bills without some issues. Giving up a second-round pick for a guy who's had consecutive down years feels risky, not to mention the guaranteed money they're giving him that essentially makes his contract a three-year deal worth $74 million that's pretty much all guaranteed now. Also, there's at least a handful of clips out there that show Moore's effort when not being targeted has been less than stellar in the past.
That plus if Patrick feels this was the right deal to make, does Beane deserve praise or heat for this move and plenty more from the reaction department.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Steve Bermel to talk about the Buffalo Sabres being absolutely electric on the ice that has clearly resonated with fans as well as discussing if the Buffalo Bills should take a big swing at pending free agent wide receiver Alec Pierce.
The vibes were immaculate at the Key Bank Center in Buffalo the other night before the Sabres took on Vegas as Tage Thompson was honored by the organization for helping the United States win a gold medal. The crowd gave him a thunderous applause (as well as Jack Eichel) and the electricity carried over into the game, as Tage scored a goal and Buffalo would hold on to beat Vegas to win their fourth in a row since coming back from the Olympic break.
The Sabres aren't slowing down and the league is noticing. More and more people are talking about the Sabres as not only a team poised to end their historic playoff drought but a team that can win multiple series in the playoffs. The guys talk about the team, the fans that have been yearning to have something to get behind again, trade rumors involving Buffalo and some prominent players around the league in advance of Friday's deadline and more.
On the football side, it appears Pierce can test the open market if he chooses. The Bills certainly have limitations, at least that's the way Brandon Beane portrays it again, but in football you can always take a big swing if you really want to. Should the Bills use that on Pierce---a guy who will surely get overpaid in the open market but still fits the Bills biggest offensive need like a glove? Also, it looks like the Bills are set to lose both David Edwards and Connor McGovern in free agency---how worried should we be about the offensive line? That and plenty more!

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren from SB Nation to discuss positional needs and potential solutions beyond wide receiver.
Understandably so, the wide receiver position attracts the most attention among fans and the media. There's certainly a need to add to the position and Buffalo will, but there's plenty of room and need to add talent to several if not most other positions.
The guys go through them, talk about needs are bigger than other and discuss a handful of potential pending free agents, trade candidates and draft prospects for each. Some positions, like edge rusher and safety seem pretty clear but others, such as offensive tackle and running back could be a bit more of a mystery.
They also talk about what they're expecting to see from Buffalo in the coming weeks based on comments by Brandon Beane and Joe Brady. That plus the Sabres are going to make March even more fun and plenty more.

On the episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by hockey writer and media personality Joe Yerdon to discuss among other topics if it's time to move the goalposts when it comes to managing the Buffalo Sabres' expectations.
It's not a done yet but the Sabres find themselves in incredibly well position to end their historic 14-year playoff drought. Their 24-5-2 record over their past 31 games has them and us as consumers thinking that just ending the drought isn't the end of their story for this season. Joe gives insight on why Buffalo's primed not just to make the playoffs but potentially do some damage while in them.
They also spend a time talking about an underrated reason why this team is turning their fortunes around---goaltending. UPL and especially Alex Lyon have paved the way for the Sabres winning ways to stay sustainable for a long stretch. Is Lyon the best unrestricted free agent signing of anyone in the league this past summer?
Also, Mattias Samuelsson has been one of the remarkable turnaround stories we've seen on the Sabres in a long time. That plus Tage Thompson being honored, trade deadline buzz and much more.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to discuss several Buffalo Bills topics, including examining if Brandon Beane is as aggressive as he thinks he is when it comes to roster construction and the draft.
During the NFL Combine this week, Beane when speaking to the media described himself as being aggressive, sometimes even needing coworkers on the Bills staff to reel him back a little bit. Is that actually true? Is Beane really that aggressive? The guys dig into that and other than three instances since 2018 don't really agree with the Bills general manager.
Also, a recurring theme emerging this offseason (again) seems to be Beane and new Bills head coach Joe Brady jumping in to talk about how much Josh Allen's contract effects the Bills. While that is indisputably true, there's plenty of other Beane roster decisions with bad contracts and/or dead cap hits that could wreck havoc on their chances to get some of the things done they're hoping for.
The guys also wonder (sort of) if the Bills could take a look at Stefon Diggs if he ends up released by the New England Patriots. That plus the Buffalo Sabres are going scorched earth right now and more.
