In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews longtime friend and collaborator Christa Orecchio, a clinical and holistic nutritionist with nearly two decades of experience in gut, adrenal, and lung health. They discuss a cutting-edge integrative approach to healing asthma, mold illness, long-COVID lung damage, and respiratory inflammation, with surprising connections to emotional trauma and nervous system regulation. Christa shares how salicylates, environmental toxins, and even repressed grief can lead to persistent lung dysfunction, and how her new lung rejuvenation program combines herbal therapy, postbiotics, trauma healing, and targeted breathwork to reverse symptoms and restore cellular vitality. Tune in to learn more about: Why lung issues go beyond inflammation or allergies: Trauma, mold exposure, antibiotics, smoking or vaping, unresolved grief, and even early childhood infections can create deep dysfunction in the lungs. Addressing them is essential for lasting healing. How environmental toxins silently damage lungs: Everyday exposures such as flame retardants, formaldehyde, pesticides, glyphosate, wildfire smoke, and nanoplastics can scar lung tissue over time. Detox support and air purification become essential, even for those living “clean.” The surprising role of foods and oils in asthma: High-salicylate foods and products including dried fruits, apples, strawberries, plums, tomatoes, cucumbers, coffee, wine, and peppermint oil can trigger respiratory flares. Short elimination trials combined with salt therapy often bring quick relief. The emotional-spiritual link to breathing: Unprocessed grief and trauma can lodge in the lungs, showing up as asthma, chronic cough, or shallow breathing. Healing through grief work, somatic therapies, or homeopathy can restore vitality and ease of breath. Herbs and nutrients that rebuild the lungs: Lungwort, golden seal, lotus root, boswellia, DNA and RNA tissue factors, postbiotics, and mitochondrial supports such as CoQ10, PQQ, and L-carnitine help restore tissue integrity, reduce inflammation, and strengthen resilience. Why nervous system healing is non-negotiable: Breathwork, EFT, and somatic trauma therapies shift the body out of fight-or-flight and into parasympathetic rest-and-heal mode. This nervous system reset unlocks true recovery for both lungs and thyroid. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Aimie Apigian, physician and author of The Biology of Trauma. Together, they explore how unresolved trauma – often overlooked in thyroid care – can predispose the body to autoimmunity, create nervous system imbalances, and keep people stuck in chronic fatigue or thyroid symptoms despite “doing everything right.” Dr. Apigian shares her journey from biochemistry and foster parenting to becoming a leading trauma expert, as well as her own experience with autoimmunity. She explains how trauma physiology differs from stress, why unresolved attachment wounds fuel thyroid issues, and what tools can help rewire the nervous system for safety and healing. What you’ll learn in this episode: Trauma isn’t always what you think. Many people dismiss their experiences because they didn’t have “big T” trauma. Dr. Aimie explains how even subtle or forgotten childhood events can rewire the nervous system, making the body feel unsafe and setting the stage for autoimmunity. Autoimmunity can be a trauma response. The body’s immune system reflects what the nervous system has learned: “it’s not safe to be me.” This creates a biology of trauma that keeps us in fight, flight, or freeze, driving thyroid imbalances and chronic fatigue. Why stress management isn’t enough. Breathwork, meditation, or cold plunges may help stress, but if the body is in trauma physiology, those tools can backfire. Healing requires working within your body’s capacity and building a “window of tolerance” for safety. How attachment wounds can affect thyroid health. From not being held enough as a baby to learning to suppress needs in childhood, these early experiences train us to abandon ourselves. Dr. Aimie shares how these patterns directly connect to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. Signs you might have stored trauma. Feeling constantly unsafe, being stuck in cycles of overwhelm, having unexplained fatigue, or always waiting for the “next shoe to drop” are all red flags that your body may be carrying unresolved trauma. Tools that create a biology of safety. Somatic practices, EMDR, neurofeedback, and Dr. Aimie’s five somatic self-practices can shift the nervous system out of trauma and into safety – often in under five minutes – without needing to rely on substances or old coping strategies. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz sits down with integrative nurse practitioner Lexi Yoo, founder of Yoo Direct Health, to explore unconventional, but highly effective, therapies for Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune conditions. From low-dose naltrexone and hormone optimization to cutting-edge peptides, ozone therapy, and semaglutide (Ozempic), Lexi shares how she personalizes care to help patients finally see progress when standard treatments fall short. They also dive into how to measure true healing using labs and symptom trackers, and why these innovative therapies should be accessible to everyday patients – not just biohackers. Whether you’ve hit a plateau or are just starting your healing journey, this episode offers fresh, practical tools to help you move the needle on recovery. Tune in to learn more: Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is a powerful, underused tool for modulating the immune system in Hashimoto’s. Lexi shares how she tailors dosing based on individual tolerance and symptoms, starting as low as 0.25 mg in sensitive cases. It can help improve mood, reduce inflammation and pain, regulate appetite, and support sleep – all of which are commonly disrupted in thyroid and autoimmune disorders. Peptides like BPC-157, KPV, and Larazotide offer next-level support for gut healing and immune balance. These naturally-occurring compounds repair gut lining, reduce inflammatory triggers, and can be used strategically in gut protocols alongside supplements like glutamine and zinc carnosine. Lexi shares how using these together can accelerate healing in patients with Hashimoto’s, IBS, SIBO, and even post-surgical recovery. Wellbutrin and semaglutide (Ozempic) aren’t just for depression or weight loss – they’re strategic tools for Hashimoto’s healing. Lexi explains how combining these medications with LDN can quiet food noise, stabilize dopamine and insulin signaling, and reduce inflammation that worsens autoimmune flares. These therapies can also support emotional resilience, especially in women juggling hormones, motherhood, careers, and chronic fatigue. Testosterone replacement can be a game-changer for women with Hashimoto’s – and no, it won’t make you look like a bodybuilder. Lexi explains how testosterone supports the thymus gland, improves libido and energy, and can even reduce thyroid antibodies. She discusses various delivery methods including pellets, creams, and new oral options, emphasizing that personalized dosing and monitoring are key. Ozone therapy is an emerging powerhouse for lowering thyroid antibodies and enhancing mitochondrial health. By delivering oxygen in a unique oxidative form, IV ozone helps improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and support immune function – especially in patients with chronic infections, high TPO levels, or autoimmunity-related fatigue. Lexi also shares how she pairs ozone with UV light, rectal insufflation, and topical applications for targeted healing. Semaglutide (Ozempic) can be a safe and strategic option for Hashimoto’s when used properly. Lexi clarifies the misunderstood connection between GLP-1 agonists and thyroid health, and how this medication – when supported by labs, nutrition, and exercise – can reduce systemic inflammation and support metabolic healing. She’s also seen benefits for PCOS, food addiction, joint pain, and even fertility in Hashimoto’s patients. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews integrative pediatrician Dr. Sheila Kilbane, who guided Izabella to get her son 100% eczema free, about the often-overlooked root causes of childhood eczema. Dr. Kilbane shares how a combination of gut-focused strategies and targeted topical therapies can transform the lives of children suffering from chronic eczema without extreme elimination diets. Listeners will gain insights into the link between eczema, histamine, food allergies, and the skin microbiome, as well as the importance of supporting detox, digestion, and the immune system as a whole. We’ll discuss: How Dr. Kilbane helped Izabella’s son become 100% eczema free. Izabella’s son developed eczema around age 1. She consulted with numerous experts to no avail, until working with Dr. Kilbane. Within weeks, her son’s eczema improved by 80% and after completing recommended tests/treatment, the eczema vanished within days.  Why eczema needs a “both/and” approach. Eczema healing often requires both external skin support and internal gut healing. Combining gentle topical treatments (including a compounded antimicrobial cream with diluted steroids) with targeted nutrition and gut support can reduce symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Relying solely on diet or creams can lead to frustration, while this integrative strategy supports faster, more lasting healing. Histamine overload may be at the root. Beyond itchy skin, excess histamine can cause sleep issues, irritability, poor appetite, and mood swings, especially in kids with eczema. Environmental allergies, gut dysbiosis, and Staph on the skin can all increase histamine levels. Short-term antihistamines, quercetin, or vitamin C can offer fast relief while deeper root causes are addressed. Why elimination diets alone aren’t the answer. While food sensitivities can play a role in eczema, extreme elimination diets, especially for picky eaters, often backfire, leading to nutrient deficiencies/stress. In many cases, kids actually tolerate more foods once the skin barrier and gut are healed. Rather than removing more foods, Dr. Kilbane’s protocol focuses on restoring gut integrity and calming inflammation. How the Aron Protocol can stop flare-ups in their tracks. This compounded topical can reduce Staph bacteria and inflammation on the skin, calming eczema flares without the rebound many parents fear. Used alongside gut healing, it allows for longer-term remission and more resilient skin. Gentle changes can make a big difference. Simple tools, like filtered bath water, dye-free detergents, probiotics, enzymes, and nutrient-rich fats, can reduce inflammation and restore the skin barrier. Even changing how and when kids bathe can make a difference. Her protocols emphasize layering small changes rather than overwhelming families with a massive overhaul. Food allergies may fade when the skin heals. A damaged skin barrier can actually trigger food sensitivities, especially when children scratch food particles into open eczema patches. Once the skin is healed and histamine levels drop, kids often become more tolerant to foods that previously caused issues. In some cases, even anaphylactic food allergies can be re-evaluated safely under medical supervision. Tune in to learn more about treating eczema from the inside out! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Carly Brown, a wellness entrepreneur and thyroid cancer thriver who took her diagnosis as an invitation to dig deeper into root cause healing. Carly shares how she used daily juicing, emotional therapy, detoxification, and dental intervention to drastically reduce her tumor before choosing thyroidectomy on her own terms. Carly’s story is a testament to resilience, integrative medicine, and the importance of advocating for yourself every step of the way. She also dives into the tools she continues to use to stay cancer-free, including molecular hydrogen water, CrossFit, and combined T3/T4 hormone replacement. Tune in to learn more about: ✅How Carly reframed her diagnosis and chose healing over fear. Instead of identifying with the illness, Carly made a conscious decision to say “I am healing” rather than “I have cancer.” This subtle but powerful shift helped her stay focused on recovery and resilience. She used affirmations and mindset work as the foundation for her healing journey, reminding herself daily that her body was capable of vibrant health. ✅The juicing protocol Carly used to support detox and cellular regeneration. Her daily anti-inflammatory routine consisting of 64 oz. of raw, organic, cold-pressed vegetable juice made with ginger, turmeric, garlic, beets, green apple, and more helped her regain energy, shrink her tumor, and launch her own juice business, Alchemy. ✅A root canal infection was the hidden root cause of her cancer. A cone beam scan revealed a decade-old jaw infection from past dental trauma and root canals – silently suppressing her immune system and likely fueling cancer growth. Multiple oral surgeries cleared the infection, bringing back her energy and triggering rapid tumor shrinkage. ✅The emotional healing that was just as critical as the physical. Carly worked with therapists and healing practitioners to process suppressed grief, trauma, and inherited emotional wounds, especially surrounding her father’s sudden death and her own perfectionism. She emphasizes that unresolved emotional pain can manifest physically, and that healing often requires looking inward. Tools like guided therapy, ancestral healing, and even plant medicine helped her release stored emotions that had been weighing on her health. ✅Why she eventually chose thyroidectomy, and how she did it on her own terms. Although she initially declined surgery, Carly returned to the idea 18 months later after dramatically improving her health through nutrition, detox, and emotional healing. She entered surgery stronger, calmer, and more informed – an empowered patient instead of a fearful one. Her case is a beautiful example of how holistic and conventional approaches can work together, especially when we take the time to listen to our bodies and build the right support team. ✅Thriving post-thyroidectomy: Carly’s protocol for hormone balance and vibrant energy. Carly now takes both T3 and T4 thyroid hormones and works closely with a functional provider to maintain optimal levels. She also follows a gluten-free, high-protein diet, drinks molecular hydrogen water, strength trains several times a week, and continues regular detox practices like juicing and clinic retreats. These habits have helped her not just manage life after thyroid removal, but truly thrive with more energy, muscle tone, and purpose than ever before. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz shares the surprising discovery that became the foundation of her bestselling book Hashimoto’s Protocol: a simple liver reset that helps 80% of Hashimoto’s patients feel better within two weeks. She explains why toxins are such a hidden driver of thyroid symptoms, how the liver plays a central role in converting thyroid hormones, and why conventional detoxes often backfire. Listeners will gain actionable strategies to reduce toxic exposures, support natural detox pathways, and use gentle nutrients and foods to restore energy, focus, and balance. What you’ll learn in this episode: ✅Why toxins are such a hidden driver of Hashimoto’s symptoms. From environmental exposures like pollution, jet fuel, mold, and fluoride, to hidden household sources such as cleaning products and plastics, our bodies are constantly dealing with toxins. For those with Hashimoto’s, this toxic load can overwhelm detox pathways, leading to fatigue, brain fog, pain, skin issues, and stubborn weight gain. ✅The “aha moment” that changed my approach. When my most sensitive clients weren’t responding to diets or supplements, I tried targeted liver support. Within two weeks, their brain fog lifted, energy returned, and pain diminished. This confirmed that liver congestion and toxin buildup play a central role in keeping many Hashimoto’s patients sick. ✅The four key elements of my liver reset process. Healing begins by reducing toxic exposures (makeup, candles, plastics, cleaning chemicals), removing common trigger foods (gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, alcohol), incorporating healing foods (cruciferous veggies, beets, blueberries, sprouts, lemon water), and supporting natural detox pathways like sweating, hydration, and bowel movements. ✅Why supporting the liver is better than “forceful detox.” Harsh cleanses, chelation, or high-dose supplements can overwhelm the body and worsen symptoms. Gentle liver support using nutrients like NAC, magnesium, and milk thistle – paired with sweating, hydration, and fiber – works with the body’s natural systems for safe, effective toxin clearance. ✅How this protocol improves thyroid function. The liver is essential for converting T4 to active T3, clearing out estrogen metabolites, and reducing the backlog of toxins that sabotage energy and mood. By supporting the liver, we improve hormone balance, reduce antibodies, and create an environment where Hashimoto’s remission is possible. ✅Real-world results from thousands of clients (and myself). From reduced joint pain and brain fog to improved labs and weight loss, this simple process has created life-changing outcomes. I personally experienced clearer skin, more energy, and even emotional release after going through the liver reset. Tune in to learn how a gentle liver reset can help you reclaim your energy and move closer to remission. What do MTHFR, thyroid disease, gallbladder removal, and fatty liver all have in common? In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews nutritionist and methylation expert Lisa Windbourn, who specializes in helping women with MTHFR gene variations, liver dysfunction, and no gallbladder, feel better using methylation-focused nutrition. They explore the impact of sluggish methylation on thyroid health, detoxification, and bile flow, and how to support your body naturally even if you have complex symptoms. Lisa breaks down the role of folate (vitamin B9), how to safely choose B vitamins, and food-based strategies to help you feel energized, clear, and on the path to optimal wellness.  Tune in to learn more about: What the MTHFR gene variation really means, and why it’s not a mutation: Lisa explains how this common genetic difference affects folate activation and detoxification. You’ll learn why this variation doesn’t guarantee symptoms and how stress, toxins, and lifestyle choices determine whether symptoms appear. How MTHFR relates to thyroid, liver, and gallbladder issues: This single enzyme plays a key role in hormone clearance, bile flow, and nutrient absorption. Sluggish methylation can increase the risk for Hashimoto’s, fatty liver, and digestive challenges, even in people following a clean diet. Why folic acid may be making things worse: Folic acid, the synthetic version of vitamin B9 found in many processed foods and supplements, can interfere with detox and methylation in people with MTHFR. Lisa shares how to spot it on labels and how to choose more effective forms like folate, methylfolate, or folinic acid. How to personalize your supplement approach: Not everyone does well with high-dose methylfolate. Lisa explains how your mood tendencies, such as anxiety or low energy, can guide your choices. You’ll also learn about gentler options like riboflavin, glycine, and TMG. How to support detox naturally, even without a gallbladder: Lisa offers practical tools, including salt flushes, breathwork, food-based nutrients, and bile support. These simple habits can help reduce inflammation, improve energy, and restore digestive function without intense protocols. Why balance is better than perfection: From enjoying dessert to skipping extreme wellness trends, Lisa and Izabella talk about real-life healing. They remind us that joy, flexibility, and self-awareness are just as important as supplements and lab tests.  Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews holistic nutritionist Divya Gupta about a rarely discussed but deeply important topic in thyroid health: the liver and gallbladder connection. Divya shares her own story of gallbladder removal and Hashimoto’s diagnosis, and how it transformed her career and healing philosophy. Together, they explore how impaired bile flow, liver overload, and fat malabsorption can all disrupt thyroid function, and what you can do to support your body, especially if your gallbladder has been removed. Tune in to learn how practical tools like bitters, beets, ox bile, TUDCA, functional lab testing, and strategic food swaps can be game-changers when it comes to supporting your gallbladder, thyroid, and overall wellness.  What you’ll learn in this episode: Why gallbladder issues can be a hidden trigger for thyroid symptoms: Even subtle signs like shoulder pain, sticky stools, or poor fat digestion may indicate early gallbladder dysfunction, and it’s more common than you think in those with Hashimoto’s. How bile production supports your thyroid at every level: Bile isn’t just for digesting fats, it helps clear toxins, absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and even plays a role in T4 to T3 conversion and gut health. Impaired bile flow can sabotage thyroid function silently. What happens after gallbladder removal and how to thrive without one: Divya shares her firsthand experience and offers practical strategies to support digestion and hormone health, even after surgery – including the use of ox bile, bitters, TUDCA, and targeted nutrients. The thyroid-liver connection that often gets missed: The liver helps activate thyroid hormone and regulate cholesterol. Yet many people with "normal labs" still benefit from liver support, especially when fatigue, brain fog, or inflammation linger. Why high cholesterol isn’t always the enemy, but can be a clue: Rather than jumping to statins, Divya explores what elevated cholesterol can reveal about thyroid dysfunction, sluggish bile flow, estrogen metabolism, and more. Everyday strategies to support your gallbladder and feel better: From lemon water and dandelion tea to gentle liver detox, bitters, and beet recipes, this episode is packed with tools to boost bile flow, improve nutrient absorption, and support thyroid healing from the ground up. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Jenny Pfleghaar, double board-certified physician and author of the upcoming book, The Perimenopause Reset, about how to thrive through the hormone rollercoaster of perimenopause. (She has Hashimoto’s too!) Perimenopause symptoms can feel overwhelming and confusing, and we’re finally lifting the curtain. We share practical insights and cutting-edge solutions, including how progesterone, cycle syncing, and peptides can help you rebalance hormones, support detox pathways, and navigate this life stage with more ease and joy. Tune in to learn: Why perimenopause feels unpredictable and what’s actually happening hormonally. It’s not just a slow decline in estrogen. Dr. Jen explains that during perimenopause, estrogen can spike and crash wildly, while progesterone steadily drops. This hormonal mismatch is why symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, and irregular cycles can appear seemingly out of nowhere and why the traditional “wait and see” approach doesn’t work. The overlooked role of cortisol, and why stress hits harder now. As progesterone levels drop, its natural calming effect on the nervous system fades. Dr. Jen highlights how women in perimenopause become more sensitive to stress, and how cortisol spikes can drive insomnia, anxiety, and fatigue. She emphasizes daily tools like HRV monitoring, breathwork, and parasympathetic support to calm the system and rebalance hormones. Blood sugar swings aren’t just about food; they’re a hormone issue. Perimenopause shifts metabolic function, increasing insulin resistance even in healthy women. Dr. Jen connects the dots between blood sugar instability and symptoms like belly weight, brain fog, and energy crashes, and shares why protein-forward meals and strength training are non-negotiable for midlife women. Sleep isn’t just rest, it’s hormonal therapy. Poor sleep amplifies cortisol, disrupts blood sugar, and worsens estrogen/progesterone balance. Dr. Jen underscores how addressing the cause of poor sleep, like stress, late-night eating, or alcohol, can unlock profound hormonal improvements without starting with medications. Progesterone might be the missing piece for mood, sleep, and calm. As levels drop in perimenopause, many women experience anxiety, restlessness, and disrupted sleep. Dr. Jen explains why bioidentical progesterone, particularly in oral form, can be a safe, effective way to restore balance and help women feel like themselves again. Magnesium can be a game-changer for people with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, but only if you’re using the right form for your body. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz shares her experience with magnesium deficiency, how to spot it even when labs are normal, and why forms like magnesium glycinate can make symptoms worse in some people. She explains how magnesium connects to thyroid health, and why magnesium citrate and Epsom salt baths are often the best choices for those with autoimmune thyroid conditions. Tune in to learn: Why more supplements aren’t always better: A client of Dr. Wentz was taking 12 different supplements but continued to struggle with anxiety, insomnia, and migraines. Once her magnesium deficiency was addressed with the right form of magnesium, nearly all of her symptoms resolved (and she stopped the other 12 supplements). This shows how one targeted intervention can be more effective than a whole shelf of supplements. How to spot magnesium deficiency even when your labs look normal: Muscle cramps, constipation, sensitivity to noise, and menstrual pain are just a few of the common signs that often go unnoticed. Since conventional testing may not catch low magnesium levels, Dr. Wentz shares a more symptom-based approach. The connection between magnesium and thyroid function: People with Hashimoto’s are more likely to be low in magnesium. This nutrient has been linked to higher thyroid antibodies and an increased risk of hypothyroidism. It also supports mood, energy, digestion, and overall immune health. Why magnesium citrate can be a helpful tool for thyroid-related symptoms: This form is often best for those dealing with constipation, anxiety, and cramps. Dr. Wentz also shares clinical findings showing that magnesium citrate may help normalize thyroid appearance on ultrasound. Why magnesium glycinate isn’t the right fit for everyone: Even though it’s popular, this form can trigger anxiety, joint pain, or panic in some individuals, Dr. Wentz explains who may need to avoid it and what to try instead. How Epsom salt can improve magnesium levels without taking a supplement: This topical option bypasses digestion and can quickly relieve joint pain, headaches, and stress. Dr. Wentz shares how to use it. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Shawn Tassone, America's Holistic Gynecologist and author of The Hormone Balance Bible. Together, they explore how archetypes like The Mother, The Nun, and The Underdog can help women understand hormonal imbalances in a more personal and empowering way. They also dive into testosterone therapy for women, the myths surrounding hormone replacement, the limitations of conventional birth control, and Dr. Tassone’s SHINES protocol, a holistic roadmap to hormone balance. Tune in to learn:  Dr. Tassone created hormonal archetypes to make hormone healing easier to relate to. Instead of just reading lab results, women can see their patterns reflected in archetypes like the Mother, the Underdog, and the Nun, and learn how their imbalances can affect their emotions. The three most common hormone issues Dr. Tassone sees are low testosterone, estrogen deficiency, and subclinical hypothyroidism. These imbalances often show up as fatigue, low libido, mood swings, or weight gain. Many women are told their labs look fine, but a closer look reveals the real story. Testosterone is not just a “male hormone.” In fact, it’s the most abundant hormone in a woman’s body. Dr. Tassone explains that women can still have symptoms like brain fog and lack of motivation when their levels are at the low end of “normal.” Just nudging them to the right level can bring a huge shift in energy and drive. Many women still worry that hormone therapy causes cancer, but that fear is based on outdated data. Dr. Tassone breaks down how the original study that sparked this concern used synthetic hormones, and newer research shows that bioidentical estrogen may actually improve longevity and reduce disease risk. Birth control pills are often used to mask hormonal symptoms rather than resolve them. Dr. Tassone sees young women with low libido, mood changes, or fatigue caused by the very medication meant to help. He encourages a deeper look at root causes, especially when birth control is being used for anything other than contraception. Dr. Tassone’s SHINES protocol goes beyond medication. By including elements like spirituality, nutrient support, movement, and even energetic therapies, it gives women multiple paths to feel better.  Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In Episode 51 of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Lauren Noel, founder of Shine Natural Medicine, to explore the surprising overlap between ADHD and thyroid dysfunction. Together, they unpack how symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, fatigue, and mood swings often stem from deeper imbalances in the gut, immune system, nervous system, and environment. Dr. Noel shares her functional medicine framework for uncovering the root causes behind ADHD and thyroid symptoms, from childhood trauma and gut dysbiosis to heavy metals, mold, and hormone imbalances. This episode is packed with clinical pearls and real-world healing stories that will inspire anyone who’s been told “it’s just in your head.” What you’ll learn in this episode: Thyroid dysfunction and ADHD share many symptoms, and may even be connected. Low thyroid function can mimic or worsen ADHD symptoms like brain fog, mood swings, and anxiety. Dr. Noel explains how even suboptimal thyroid labs can significantly affect cognition and emotional regulation. For many women, optimizing thyroid health leads to improvements in focus, motivation, and energy. Childhood trauma and stress can lay the foundation for chronic health issues later in life. Emotional trauma and chronic stress can show up as brain fog, digestive issues, and mood instability decades later. Dr. Noel explains how early emotional wounds dysregulate the nervous system – and why therapies like EMDR and neurofeedback are crucial to true healing, not just symptom relief. The gut-brain connection plays a key role in both ADHD and thyroid dysfunction. Chronic digestive issues, food sensitivities, and gut infections like H. pylori and SIBO can contribute to systemic inflammation that impacts the brain and thyroid. Dr. Noel walks through the testing she uses to identify gut imbalances and the protocols that support both digestive and mental wellness. Heavy metals, mold, and environmental toxins are common in both thyroid and ADHD clients. Dr. Noel often sees exposure to mercury, lead, mold, and chemical sensitivities as hidden drivers behind fatigue, neurological symptoms, and thyroid resistance. She shares her process for identifying these toxic burdens and outlines how to detox safely through drainage and liver support. Standard ADHD treatments often miss the mark for women. Stimulant medications might provide temporary focus, but they don’t resolve the deeper imbalances, and may even worsen anxiety or sleep issues. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Ginny Mahar, also known as the Hypothyroid Chef, about the most common pitfalls people face when trying to follow a thyroid-friendly diet – and how to avoid them. Ginny shares her personal healing story and the foundational food and lifestyle principles that helped her turn her health around. Listeners will learn how to identify their own food sensitivities, overcome perfectionism and overwhelm, and adopt simple, sustainable habits that support thyroid healing… without the stress and burnout. The episode also touches on the importance of mindset, community, and looking beyond food to help you thrive and embrace a holistic approach to healing. Tune in to learn more about making your thyroid-friendly lifestyle joyful and practical! What you’ll learn in this episode: Why identifying your own food triggers is not only essential, but empowering. While common culprits like gluten, dairy, soy, grains, and nightshades can drive inflammation, Ginny emphasizes the importance of personal experimentation to uncover what truly works for your body – and what doesn’t. Using flexible frameworks like Paleo or AIP as a starting point, she encourages a “detective” mindset to find your ideal food roadmap. The perfectionism trap: why “all or nothing” can stall your healing. Many thyroid patients feel they must follow their diet flawlessly to succeed. But the stress of trying to “get it perfect” can backfire. Ginny shares how defining your non-negotiables (like gluten) while allowing for personal “wiggle room” can relieve pressure and make healing more sustainable. How to cut through the online noise. Carnivore, keto, oxalates, AIP… with so much conflicting advice, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Ginny shares how to tune out confusion, identify thyroid-savvy experts, and reconnect with what your body needs – not what’s trending. She encourages simplifying your inputs, trusting your intuition, and staying grounded in what actually works for you. Start simple and make healing sustainable. Instead of chasing complex protocols or recipes with 20 ingredients, Ginny recommends focusing on nutrient-dense staples like organic produce, clean proteins, and healthy fats. Her strategy: build a weekly foundation with batch-prepped basics like roasted veggies, shredded protein, and a go-to sauce for fast, nourishing meals. The power of mindset and community. Reframing your journey from deprivation to empowerment – focusing on what you can eat, celebrating small wins, and leaning on a supportive community – can radically shift your relationship with food, healing, and yourself. Ginny walks through mindset tools like “tiny celebrations” and the joy of finding thyroid-safe foods you love, plus the importance of not doing it alone. Why lifestyle habits matter as much as food. Thyroid healing isn’t just about what’s on your plate. Ginny explains the eight foundational rituals – from sleep and self-care to stress reduction and gut repair – that build energy, calm the immune system, and support long-term wellness. Her “8 Daily Rituals” framework offers a doable, whole-life approach to healing, one habit at a time. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Jenn Simmons, a breast cancer surgeon turned functional medicine leader. After overcoming her own health crisis, Dr. Jen now works to revolutionize how breast cancer is diagnosed, treated, and prevented. They discuss why mammograms aren’t saving lives, how modern imaging tools like QT ultrasounds offer a safer option, and why root causes like gut health, toxins, and dental infections must be addressed for true prevention. You’ll also hear practical steps every woman can take to build breast health and resilience, starting today. Tune in to learn more about: Why the “tumor is the problem” mindset misses the mark. In conventional medicine, breast cancer is treated by attacking the tumor, but Dr. Jen explains why the tumor is actually a symptom of deeper imbalances that must be addressed for true healing. She now uses functional medicine to identify what’s fueling the tumor in the first place, from immune dysfunction to hormone disruption. The surprising risk factors that aren’t discussed enough. Gut health, constipation, mold exposure, mercury amalgams, and hidden oral infections like root canals and cavitations can all create an environment that fuels breast cancer… yet they’re often overlooked. Dr. Jenn walks through how to test for each and why addressing them is critical to changing your internal terrain. Why conventional breast cancer screening isn’t saving lives. Decades of data show that mammograms aren’t reducing breast cancer deaths or saving breasts – and may even lead to overtreatment and harm. Dr. Jen breaks down the statistics and explains why self-awareness, targeted testing like the AURIA tears test, and safer imaging options offer a better path forward. The breast-friendly screening technology you need to know about. Learn about QT ultrasound, a breakthrough imaging tool that offers safe, painless, radiation-free breast screening – and how it compares to mammograms and MRI. Dr. Jenn has opened centers offering this advanced scan, and shares how it’s changing the way women approach screening with less fear and more clarity. How Dr. Jenn rebuilt her health after hitting rock bottom. From nearly dying during her own healing journey to emerging with a new understanding of breast cancer prevention, Dr. Jenn shares the most important lessons she learned along the way, and how you can apply them too. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with hormone expert and bestselling author Dr. Anna Cabeca about how to thrive during perimenopause and menopause. Dr. Anna, also known as The Girlfriend Doctor, shares her story of reversing early menopause and infertility, and explains how women can reclaim their energy, libido, and joy in midlife and beyond. Together, they explore simple and effective strategies for balancing hormones naturally, including keto-alkaline eating, urine pH testing, topical DHEA, and the underestimated power of oxytocin. This episode is filled with actionable insights to help women transition into their “second spring” with confidence, vitality, and pleasure. Tune in to learn more about: Menopause is natural, but suffering doesn’t have to be part of it. Many women are told to brace for hot flashes, mood swings, and weight gain as inevitable. Dr. Anna explains why menopause is a transition, not a disease, and how targeted support for hormones, inflammation, and adrenal health can help you thrive in your “second spring.” The Keto-Green method balances metabolism and mood, especially during perimenopause. Traditional keto diets can worsen symptoms for some women due to increased acidity and stress. Dr. Anna’s approach combines a modified keto approach with alkalinizing foods, intermittent fasting, and hormone-friendly nutrients to support brain health, insulin sensitivity, and energy without the typical keto crash. Your urine pH and ketones tell the real story. Instead of guessing how your body is responding, Dr. Anna recommends simple at-home urine testing for pH and ketones. These biomarkers reveal how food, stress, sleep, and even emotions affect your physiology, and guide personalized adjustments for hormone and metabolic balance. Oxytocin is a missing piece in the hormone conversation. Often overlooked, this “connection hormone” helps regulate cortisol, improve mood, and restore vitality. Dr. Anna highlights how pleasure, laughter, and even playing with pets can naturally raise oxytocin, shifting the body out of burnout and into healing. Topical DHEA for v@ginal rejuvenation can be a game changer From discomfort and dryness to incontinence and low libido, vaginal atrophy can erode quality of life. Dr. Anna explains how products like JULVA®, along with DHEA and pelvic floor support, can restore comfort, sensation, and confidence, at any age. Yes, you can reverse premature ovarian failure. Dr Anna’s story proves it. After being told she was infertile and in early menopause, she reversed her symptoms, conceived naturally at 41, and now helps other women do the same.  Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews integrative psychiatrist Dr. Achina Stein and patient advocate Silvia Covelli, co-founders of the Healing Depression Project, to explore a revolutionary new approach to treating depression. They reveal how depression often stems from underlying root causes like gut dysfunction, inflammation, trauma, and nutrient deficiencies. Listeners will gain valuable insights into why the conventional model falls short and how addressing biology and lifestyle can lead to real emotional transformation.   Listeners will learn about: Conventional psychiatry often misses root causesDepression is typically treated with a diagnosis and a prescription — often skipping deeper evaluation. Labs like B12, iron, vitamin D, and thyroid markers are rarely run, even though deficiencies can cause depression-like symptoms. Dr. Stein notes, “We used to do this routinely. Now it's fallen off the radar.” Inflammation is the true root — not a chemical imbalanceNeurotransmitter imbalances are a downstream effect of chronic inflammation. Dr. Stein emphasizes the need to investigate inflammatory triggers like poor gut health, nutrient deficiencies, mold toxicity, and hormonal imbalances — especially during perimenopause and postpartum. Mold toxicity is a hidden and devastating triggerOver half of the Healing Depression Project participants had elevated mold toxins — often without visible mold in their environment. Symptoms ranged from depression and anxiety to fatigue and skin rashes. Mold exposure requires immediate detox support, often with binders, before any other treatment can succeed. Therapeutic ketogenic diet led to remission in 50% of participantsIn just 26 days, half of the program’s participants — who had treatment-resistant depression for an average of 25 years — reached full remission using a gluten-free, dairy-free ketogenic diet paired with foundational lifestyle changes like sleep hygiene, movement, and meditation. Psychodrama therapy offered powerful trauma releaseTen days of immersive group-based psychodrama provided the equivalent of 50+ hours of traditional therapy. Participants processed and rewrote core traumatic experiences, contributing significantly to emotional breakthroughs. Sustainable recovery requires daily actionDepression healing isn’t passive — it requires intentional shifts in daily habits. Silvia Covelli emphasizes: “This isn’t a magic pill. It’s a system. But when you commit, it changes everything.” Supportive nutrients and testing are essentialTools like betaine HCl, bile salts, selenium, zinc, and testing for hormone imbalances, mold toxins, and gut dysbiosis were critical in individualizing care. The team emphasizes personalization and ongoing support after the in-person retreat. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. David Jockers, an expert in functional nutrition, gut health, and mitochondrial medicine. Together, they explore the intricate connection between gut inflammation and thyroid dysfunction, breaking down the gut-liver-thyroid axis and why mitochondrial health is often the missing piece in healing.  Dr. Jockers shares his insights into how the gut microbiome contributes to thyroid hormone activation and why common protocols like keto and intermittent fasting may not work for everyone, especially without foundational healing steps like improving sleep, digestion, and mitochondrial function. The discussion also dives into practical, research-backed strategies that support metabolic flexibility and reduce thyroid antibodies, including the use of postbiotics, immunoglobulins, and nutrient therapies.  What you’ll learn in this episode: Why your thyroid symptoms might be a gut problem in disguise. Even if you’re producing enough thyroid hormone, poor gut health can block the critical T4-to-T3 conversion needed for energy, mood, and metabolism. Dr. Jockers explains how gut inflammation and microbiome imbalances often go undetected and how supporting the gut can unlock better thyroid function. When your cells go into “wartime mode,” your thyroid pays the price. Chronic stress, infections, or environmental toxins can flip the mitochondria, your body’s energy producers, into a defensive, low-energy state. This cell danger response damages the gut lining, fuels autoimmunity, and halts healing unless reversed through targeted mitochondrial support. You could have leaky gut, even if your digestion seems fine. Many people with thyroid conditions have silent intestinal permeability, driving inflammation and autoimmunity. Dr. Wentz shares how symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, or infertility may actually stem from gut damage that began years before a Hashimoto’s diagnosis. Bone broth isn’t a gut cure-all; root causes matter. While nutrients like glutamine or collagen can soothe the gut lining, they won’t fix what’s breaking it down. Dr. Jockers highlights overlooked drivers like vagus nerve dysfunction, parasites, poor stomach acid, or EMFs, and why deep healing starts with identifying and removing those triggers. Mitochondrial nutrients can be a game-changer if you start them early. Supplements like butyrate, magnesium, carnitine, and immunoglobulins can help repair the gut lining, restore energy, and reduce thyroid antibodies. Supporting cellular energy is often the first step in getting out of burnout and finally feeling like yourself again. Keto and fasting can help, but only when your body’s ready. These popular strategies can backfire if you have adrenal fatigue, poor digestion, or constipation. Dr. Jockers and Dr. Wentz stress the importance of building metabolic flexibility gradually, starting with sleep, digestion, and blood sugar regulation before jumping into advanced protocols. Tune in to learn more about the root causes of thyroid dysfunction, the importance of gut and mitochondrial repair, and how to personalize healing strategies for lasting energy and resilience. In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Kyle Lasota, a wellness entrepreneur and Hashimoto’s patient who has spent over $250,000 on his health journey to uncover root causes and simplify the path to healing. From mold toxicity and long COVID to an early Hashimoto’s diagnosis, Kyle shares what truly worked, what didn’t, and how mindset, time freedom, and identity shifts can fast-track recovery. Tune in to learn more about Kyle’s unconventional healing journey and the systems, products, and philosophies that helped him recover his health and build a business that supports it. We’ll cover: Why knowing your root causes changes everything. After being misdiagnosed several times, Kyle’s health breakthrough came when he found a practitioner who ran the right tests — revealing severe mold toxicity and early-stage Hashimoto’s. Once he had real data, he could finally target the true culprits behind his symptoms. How to protect your time and energy so healing becomes possible. Kyle explains the concept of “time wealth,” and how outsourcing low-leverage tasks like grocery shopping or cleaning can create the space necessary for deep healing. Without it, stress and decision fatigue can keep you stuck. How shifting your identity can support healing. Kyle explains how redefining himself beyond illness (as the “Wellness Daddy”) helped accelerate his recovery — and why mindset changes like this may be just as critical as diet or supplements. The power of doing less — and doing it better. Instead of chasing every biohack or supplement, Kyle talks about the underestimated value of fundamentals: sleep hygiene, sunlight, hydration, movement, and community. How to make lifestyle upgrades that are sustainable. From blue-light blocking glasses, air filtration, red light therapy, and meal prepping to building a non-toxic home , Kyle shares his favorite healing tools and how he vets products so others don’t have to waste time or money. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Robin Urekar, a naturopathic doctor specializing in thyroid health and autoimmunity. Together, they uncover the often-overlooked truth about thyroid antibodies — why they matter, what they reveal about the progression of Hashimoto’s, and how to lower them naturally. Drawing from both personal and clinical experience, Dr. Wentz and Dr. Urekar explain how symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, fertility issues, and mood disorders can persist even when thyroid hormone levels look “normal” — and why addressing thyroid antibodies is essential for long-term healing. They dive into the hidden triggers behind elevated thyroid antibodies — and what you can start doing today to turn things around, help support your immune system, and bring those antibodies down. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why thyroid antibodies matter more than you think: Thyroid antibodies aren’t just diagnostic markers — they’re active players in autoimmune thyroid disease. Elevated levels can indicate how aggressive the autoimmune process is, and they often drive symptoms like fatigue, inflammation, and brain fog, even when hormone levels look “normal.” Symptoms beyond the thyroid – what antibodies can really cause:High thyroid antibodies have been linked to a surprising range of symptoms — from anxiety, insomnia, and infertility to joint pain, cognitive issues, and even increased risks for thyroid and breast cancer. Recognizing these connections can help you finally explain symptoms that conventional lab results may have overlooked. Why you need more than just a TSH test:TSH is often the only test run in conventional medicine, which means many people are diagnosed years too late. A full thyroid panel, including TPO and Tg antibodies, can catch Hashimoto’s in its early stages — before permanent damage occurs. The six common triggers behind elevated antibodies: We dive into stress, leaky gut, nutrient deficiencies (like low ferritin, B12, and vitamin D), toxins, inflammation, and blood sugar imbalances some of the most common drivers of thyroid antibodies. Addressing these underlying issues — not just symptoms — is key to lasting healing. Everyday strategies to lower antibodies and feel better: From daily breathwork, PFF-style meals (protein-fat-fiber), nervous system support, and meal planning to ditching excess iodine and healing the gut, this episode is packed with practical ways to start lowering antibodies naturally. You’ll also learn why going gluten- or dairy-free might help, but how gut repair can often bring food freedom back. Tune in to learn more about how to reduce thyroid antibodies and uncover the true root causes behind persistent Hashimoto’s symptoms. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz explores the surprising foods that may look healthy on the outside — but secretly sabotage thyroid healing for those with Hashimoto’s. From high-iodine “superfoods” to seemingly innocent whey protein and gluten-free treats, she breaks down what makes these foods problematic and what to eat instead. What you’ll learn in this episode: The truth about iodine and Hashimoto’s. While iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, excessive intake — especially from kelp, spirulina, and seaweed snacks — can trigger autoimmune flares. I’ve seen clients go from mildly symptomatic to completely bedridden after unknowingly overdoing iodine! Which protein powders are the best options for those with Hashimoto’s. Up to 80% of people with Hashimoto’s react to dairy, and whey is a major culprit. If you’ve been loading up on whey smoothies and are still dealing with bloating, skin issues, or joint pain, you may want to reconsider your protein powder. Even “healthier” grain products can still be harmful. Einkorn, sourdough, and sprouted wheat may be easier to digest for some — but for people with Hashimoto’s, they can still contribute to leaky gut and molecular mimicry. A survey I conducted years ago found that about 88% of my thyroid community feels better going gluten-free. Why soy can be sneaky and disruptive. Soy products can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption and increase antibodies. Even fermented versions like miso may cause issues in sensitive individuals. For many clients, removing soy dramatically reduces anxiety and brain fog. Gluten-free junk food is still junk. Yes, it’s free of gluten, but it’s often high in sugar, low in protein, and filled with inflammatory ingredients. Blood sugar imbalances from gluten-free cookies, pizza, and crackers can make thyroid symptoms worse, not better. Personalization is everything. Just because a food is labeled as a “superfood” doesn’t mean it’s super for your thyroid. From sushi to smoothies, what supports one person’s wellness could hinder someone else’s healing journey. Bioindividuality matters.  Tune in to learn how the “healthy” foods you might be eating could be making your symptoms worse! Plus, you’ll discover plenty of realistic swaps so you can eat to nourish your thyroid, not aggravate it.
