Description
Join Luke Westaway and Andy Farrant as they talk about cinema's greatest achievement: Disney Channel Original Movies. From X-TREME rollerblading, to Mermen, to homicidal smart homes, there's something for everyone in these brilliant, baffling films. Also, usually the mom character in the film is unable to cook, and this is considered richly comic. Hence the name.

John Scaduto has a problem. If he can get through the school term without getting in trouble, he stands to get a $10,000 check from his grandma. Unfortunately, he has already set into motion an epic prank that will maim his headmaster and earn him up to one demerit on his permanent record. But when his headmaster is incapacitated by a second, unrelated Scaduto attack, John realises that the answer to his problem is simple: hire a random drifter to pretend to be the Principal and hope against hope that he doesn't turn out to be some kind of sex criminal. Enter Fitz, a free-spirited traveller who takes on the role of Dr Vernon Baxter, the substitute Principal, in exchange for some drumsticks and the chance to mess with the system. But before long, Fitz's methods are causing anarchy at the school, plus about 14 other plot lines that I don't really have the space to go into here. But can John reign in Fitz's anarchic spirit and bring the school back under control? Why is there a second Vernon Baxter running around? And why is there a THIRD Vernon Baxter running around? If you've ever wondered what the Lawrence brothers, stars of such DCOMs as Horse Sense, Jumping Ship and The Other Me were up to in 2020, the answer is making Money Plane, a heist movie about a high stakes casino in the sky where you can bet on a man having relations with an alligator. Look, it was a bad year for everyone, alright? The film follows Jack Reese (Edge), a retired Special Heisting Guy who is forced into taking down the Money Plane by the baddest mother-effer on the planet, Darius Emmanuel Grouch III AKA The Rumble (Kelsey Grammer). But will Jack's ragtag heist crew have what it takes to tussle with the Money Plane's clientele of arms dealers and Yosemite Sam cosplayers? Can they steal a billion dollars worth of crypto and make it out unscathed? And what are we actually betting on when we bet on a man f***ing an alligator? Listen and find out!If you crave bonus episodes of Mom Can't Cook!, monthly livestream watchalongs, or a shoutout at the end of the show, remember to check out our Patreon at Patreon.com/extrahelpings.If you've watched Money Plane and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show. We've all imagined how we would build a better boy (built in jetpack/hair made of candy/is actually a dog instead) but few of us have the technology at our disposal to make our dreams a reality. Not so teen geniuses Gabby and Mae, thanks to advanced character creation technology belonging to Mae's dad, a famous videogame designer who doesn't appear to have actually designed any games. Except get this: Mae's dad actually works for the Department of Defence, and by fiddling around in his office trying to make the perfect super hunk, Mae and Gabby have accidentally created the military cyborg X17, AKA Albert, who is more than just the perfect prom date: he's the perfect weapon to defeat America's Enemies At Home And Abroad. But can Mae and Gabby keep Albert safe from the military? How will he navigate high school life? And will he revert to his original programming and just kill *everyone*? Are celebrities human beings who deserve basic respect and human dignity? Of course not, you're thinking, they're scum and deserve everything bad that happens to them and more. But to that I say: watch the Disney Channel Original Movie Starstruck. You might learn a thing or two.Starstruck follows the adventures of Jessica, a girl with no hobbies or interests who goes to Los Angeles to visit her grandmother and ends up being violently abducted by teen singing sensation Christopher Wilde. So far, so Hollywood. But before long, Jessica realises that Christopher isn't the unfeeling monster she thought he was, and starts to fall for this sunglass-centric singer. Can Jessica and Christopher find love despite coming from two different worlds? Can Christopher maintain a perfectly neutral reputation with the press? And does Jessica's family care *at all* about her vanishing for long stretches of time and returning with head wounds? Listen and find out!If you crave bonus episodes of Mom Can't Cook!, monthly livestream watchalongs, or a shoutout at the end of the show, remember to check out our Patreon at Patreon.com/extrahelpings.If you've watched Starstruck and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show. While not officially a DCOM, Susie Q (1996) offered an opportunity for the Disney Channel to start experimenting with what works and what doesn't in a Disney Channel film. For example, high concept premise? Great, love it. Cute romance blossoming between reluctant companions? Also good, let's keep that. Shot of one of the main characters' smashed up corpse in the first four minutes? Probably we don't need to do that one again. And yet without that smashed up corpse we wouldn't have Susie Q (Amy-Jo Johnson), a plucky ghost from the 1950s who shows up in the go-go nineties to right a terrible wrong with the help of the only person who can see her, Zach (Justin Whalin). But can Susie and Zach solve a decades-old mystery without everyone thinking Zach is crazy? Can the town's evil property developer be stopped? And did Zach really kill his own father with an incredible basketball dunk? Listen and find out!If you crave bonus episodes of Mom Can't Cook!, monthly livestream watchalongs, or a shoutout at the end of the show, remember to check out our Patreon at Patreon.com/extrahelpings.If you've watched Susie Q and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show. The 2008 Writer's Guild of America strike was responsible for many things: Increased pay for writers, especially in the context of the burgeoning streaming era. A boom in unscripted reality television. And, most regrettably of all, the plot of the Disney Channel Original Movie Dadnapped, in which a dad gets kidnapped. But not just any dad. This dad is Neal Morris, author of the Tripp Zoome spy novels, and with him missing, it's up to his plucky daughter Melissa to get her father home safe, despite the notable drawbacks of a) being constantly haunted by intrusive hallucinations of popular character Tripp Zoome, b) there being two separate competing sets of kidnappers vying for possession of Neal and c) her dad quite liking being kidnapped. Will Melissa be able to save Neal and rescue Zoome Con? Can some non-union rando you found hanging around the YA aisle in Barnes & Noble write an entire movie screenplay? And why is everyone in this film always being covered in stinking fluid? Dedicating your life to scientific pursuits can have countless benefits for humanity, but you have to bear in mind the potential drawbacks. You could study something before its dangerous effects are known, like Marie Curie, invent something monumentally destructive, like J. Robert Oppenheimer, or accidentally fall through a time hole to the court of King Arthur like Dr. Vivian Morgan, the protagonist of the film we're here to talk about today.Luckily, Vivian isn't the sort of person to get bogged down in things like 'trying to understand what happened' and 'attempting to get back to her home time', and instead throws herself wholeheartedly into her two passions: speedrunning the industrial revolution and murdering her rivals at court. But can she truly make life better for the serfs of England? Can Arthur be persuaded that the King's Law isn't always right? And why does Merlin keep spinning in a circle, emitting colourful gas? What would you do with the incredible power of time travel? No, look... no, you can't stop historical tragedies from happening because you can only go back in time 48 hours so- no, you can't buy a lottery ticket either because you're a teenager in this scenario, so you- no, you can't see wonderful things all over the world, you have to remain within a 20 minute travel radius of your school. You'd use it to stop nerds embarrassing themselves two days in the past? Yeah, that's probably as good as it's going to get, isn't it.That's the decision the heroes of this week's DCOM, 2008's Minutemen, also come to and before long they're popping out of a time hole to stop a nerd from getting pantsed, and barreling through the space time continuum to prevent a geek from walking around school with toilet paper stuck to his shoe. But when their chronovigilantism offers one of them a chance to undo his greatest mistake, will he take it? Imagine the situation: the Walt Disney company wants to turn your life story into a movie! It's a dream come true. That is, until the movie comes out, and you realise it's a crushingly boring series of basketball games and for some reason they've decided to name it "Double Teamed". You'd be livid.Still, I suppose it has to feature some basketball, as Double Teamed tells the real life story of Heather and Heidi Burge, twin sisters and pioneers of the WNBA. But their rise to the top wasn't always smooth, if this film is to be believed, and they had to deal with among other things, not liking basketball, evil teammates, and since this is a DCOM, the world's worst dad. Being a princess is hard work. You're the best person in your whole kingdom, and yet you're somehow expected to set an example for the scum who live there, and occasionally military dictators will stride into your throne room and declare a military coup. Luckily for those situations, we have the Princess Protection Program, a secret service just for young, female royalty, who will spirit princesses away from dangerous conflict zones and force them to live in a stinking bait shack in a Louisiana swamp. Hooray! This unlikely situation is where Princess Rosalinda (Demi Lovato) finds herself in 2009's Princess Protection Program, much to the chagrin of one of the bait shack's current occupants, Carter (Selena Gomez). However, as Rosalinda's exile continues, the two find themselves growing closer, and both of them start to realise the true meaning of being a princess: pop rock montages. Will Rosalinda be able to return to the kingdom of Costa Luna? Can Carter win the coveted title of Homecoming Queen? And why doesn't General Kane just strafe everyone involved with his F-16s? The title of this week's DCOM, Camp Rock, is misleading, because while it does take place at a camp, the only rocking taking place is the rocking back and forth by harrowed students who can't face another day of impromptu unaccompanied singing, people drumming on every available surface, and hip hop dance classes taught by Joe Jonas. Apparently though, there are people who actually want to attend Camp Rock, on purpose, people like Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato), who scores a coveted spot at the camp thanks to them hiring her mom's catering business. But when Mitchie lies about her background to impress some popular girls, she starts building a house of cards that could come crashing down, taking a Jonas Brother's feelings with it. Will Mitchie learn to be true to herself? Why did one of the Jonas Brothers allow himself to be characterised as a backwards idiot? And is "Brown Cesario" a real name? Listen and find out! Parents might seem like they've got everything figured out, but it's worth remembering that they're just one failed time travel experiment away from crying, throwing temper tantrums, and liberally pissing themselves at the slightest provocation. Not so high and mighty now, eh? That's the premise of 2001's The Poof Point, in which accomplished husband and wife scientist team Norton and Marigold Ballard decide to let a dog wander into their time machine and start pulling things out at random. Because of this, the pair starts rapidly de-aging and it's up to their kids, Eddie and Marie to save the day before their bickering parents reach the fatal 'poof point' and poof out of existence. Will the Ballards be able to figure out what went wrong with the experiment? Should Eddie still attend his audition for the band The Urban Slugs, considering that his parents will die very soon? Did Norty make a mess? Listen and find out! We're back in the Wonderful World of Disney this week, to check out Life-Size, the 2000 comedy starring Lindsay Lohan as a grieving little girl who uses a necromancy grimoire to try and resurrect her dead mother, and Tyra Banks as a doll who comes to life and tries to have sex with that little girl's father. Lohan plays Casey, a young girl who uses a mystical book to try and bring her mom back to life, but when some doll hair accidentally gets into her dark ritual she ends up with a life-sized doll named Eve (Banks), who is eager to experience everything the world has to offer, especially Casey's Dad (Jere Burns), and every other man at his law office. Will Casey be able to find the book containing the reversal spell and send Eve back to her home town of Sunnyvale? Will dad realise that his daughter is more important than making partner at his law firm? And why is this film a dark erotic thriller instead of a fun kids' film? Listen and find out! High-schooler Jamie Bartlett finds herself thrust onto the world stage when an email error sees her fictionlised journal become a nationwide best-seller. But what will happen if her fellow students find out some of the characters are loosely based on them?! If your answer is 'probably nothing?' then boy does Read It and Weep have a problem with you, buddy. Brace for one of the most incoherent DCOMs Luke and Andy have ever encountered, made only slightly more palatable by a Green Goblin-esque mind shattering and roiling masses of hyper-aggressive iguanas. High School Musical is back in High School Musical 2! Will this one contain an actual musical? No! And also it's not even set in a high school this time! With school out for the summer, the Wildcats of East High find themselves working at a snooty country club owned by the parents of objectively best characters Ryan and Sharpay Evans. But as sports star Troy starts being groomed for a scholarship to the prestigious University of Albuquerque, he finds he has to choose between his friends and his future, for some reason. Will Troy and Gabriella be able to overcome Troy having a job? Who will win the coveted Star Dazzle award? And why do Ryan and Chad swap clothes at one point? Mom Can't Cook! returns on 20 Jan with High School Musical 2, but until then we thought we'd treat you to a feed drop of a classic episode of Extra Helpings, Mom Can't Cook's Patreon-exclusive bonus podcast. This episode originally aired on 22 April 2024, and covers Disney Channel Original TV Show So Weird season 2 episode 10, 'Oopa'. Get access to over 40 (and counting) hours of bonus episodes by going to Patreon.com/ExtraHelpings. In perhaps the most hatstand episode of So Weird yet, Fi and the gang run into the world's richest computer genius, Tad Raxall, in the lobby of a modestly priced tiki-themed motel in the small town of Paradise, Virginia. It turns out he's here at the behest of the nearby CIA to investigate what appears to be an ancient computer, and what follows is the funniest 20 minutes of television ever committed to the Disney Channel as Fi and her friends repeatedly break into the CIA headquarters and put their hands all over everything. my favourite thing about this ep is that until they mention the onion knight in passing there's no way to know they're games journalists due to only being able to name among us, sonic and pacman 😂
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Paddington is cocaine bear
How am I supposed to climax to this?
To be fair to the movie, I think it makes sense that the movie wouldn't focus very much on the babies when the target audience it kids and teenagers who probably don't find babies that cute or entertaining. That being said, wow this Marnie is hands down the worst protagonist we've seen yet. Great episode as always guys!
I gotta say, I don't think the Mom's decision is one that I can respect to forever lock away her kid's powers. That's the kind of decision that forever ruins the relationship between a child and a parent.
Please hurry up with the Ramp Warriors! merch. especially the Tshirt with the final scene of Andy and Luke kissing with the ramp in the background. I can only stand here with my credit card in my hand for so long....
way to go, luke and andy! this show is amazing, and you two are so much fun to listen to. Thank you for saving me from watching these movies 🤣❣️
Oh my goodness the bit about the mole people pulling apart the dad had me laughing the hardest I have in probably years! Best podcast ever
I laughed more listening to this episode than I have at any other media this year. Their absurd extrapolations of the father's misadventures are just so beautifully silly. Loved it.
In true dcom fashion I watched this movie last Halloween having remembered it fondly as a kid, and then was sooo disappointed in it. Glad to hear you cover it!
