On today's episode of Mariette's On The Move we have a very special guest! @thekevinbay comes on today and we talk about 'Rental Arbitrage.' It came from a conversation we were having about 'robustness', which is part of my FRED Framework (physical strength) when it comes to moving, and he mentioned something about how he's doing rental arbitrage. I was like, 'time out- what is that??' I had never heard of it, have you?? It's when you do a long term rental agreement with a landlord to rent out that place short term. It's a great alternative to buying a place and rent it out on a short term basis, but there are some pros and cons. Tune in to find out what they are!Kevin's a former college and professional athlete who now owns a fitness business called Hybrid Performance Center in Peoria, AZ where he trains all levels of baseball players from young high school kids to players that play for major league baseball team. Want to check out some of my favorite things from the show? What if you decided to travel the world for 3 months, and it turned into over a year? That's what happened to my friend Hollie. She went to several countries in Asia, North & Central America, Europe and Australia. In June of 2023, we talked about her move back to America, discussing what cities she was considering and what they needed in proximity for her to thrive. I advised her on her job search and resume, and we discussed what she needed to consider when searching for neighborhoods in her new city. Hollie is a very confident, mentally strong individual- what transpired between her decision of the city she would move to, and landing in Chicago was surprisingly emotional for her! In this very raw interview, we talk about the darker side of loneliness in the moving journey, and we set realistic expectations on what supports you need to put in place to ensure that when you have doubts, unanticipated life events, and setbacks, you have healthy coping tools, so you don't feel so alone, especially if you have uncertainty about the future.Hollie was only 3 weeks into living in Chicago; we will check back with her in a few months to get her perspective and reflect on those first few months in her new city.Want to check out some of my favorite things from the show? This episode is an interesting one because we’re talking about a hard topic—the correlation between ADHD and moving a lot. I’m talking with Stacy Colgan, LCSW and therapist with Watervliet Counseling. Stacy and I both have ADHD, and she specializes in ADHD counseling and therapy, which is one of the 4 components of treating ADHD. The act of relocating can be especially challenging for someone with ADHD. The process requires planning, organization, and follow-through – areas where individuals with ADHD might face challenges. We go deep into what the FMCSA does to protect consumers, what to do if you feel you’ve been scammed and what resources they have for consumers at ProtectYourMove.gov such as a rights and responsibilities handbook, a moving checklist, and most importantly, the database to search for the moving company you’re considering hiring to make sure they’re in good standing with the Department of Transportation and the FMCSA. Relocating can be smoother with smart planning. Start early, declutter ruthlessly, and label everything clearly. Use sturdy, eco-friendly supplies like reusable moving bins to avoid cardboard chaos. Services like https://www.jpurbanmoving.com/services/moving-bins/ offer convenient rentals that simplify packing and reduce waste. Don’t forget to create a first-night essentials box with toiletries, chargers, and snacks to make settling in easier.
