Description
An entertaining conversation from friends, Rhys and Kane, as they marathon films that share the same series, director, actor or themes. The movies explored, reviewed and ranked could be anything from cinema mastery and mindless entertainment, to visual and auditory assaults - as long as they're viewed as part of a movie marathon.

THE LAST MARATHON MEAfter close to four years, 150 episodes and a hell of a lot of movies, Marathon Me comes to a close. But who knows, maybe this will be a "final chapter" the likes of Friday the 13th Part 4 or Saw 7, that end up being nowhere near the last entry!Rhys is going to Europe for an undisclosed amount of time, and the time differences, nomadic nature of the trip and different cuisines overseas, it looks like putting the podcast to bed for a hot minute is the best approach for now. What the boys have to leave you off with is a little bit of a reminisce and overview of their experience over the last few years, including some favourite and least favourite memories from their time.Who knows what the next step will be for Marathon Me... a sequel? a remake? a reboot? KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONA bit unreal to think that Kevin Smith has become Marathon Me's longest series; the boys travelling from a convenience store, to the mall, a Christian cult camp, meeting God, and back to a convenience store (many many times.)The journey proving to be as close to a mixed bag as one could imagine for a filmmakers' career.Rhys and Kane rank every film from the once iconic director, break down the several phases of his career, and explore what other media and appearances connected to Kevin exist out there, as well as his prolific creations, Jay and Silent Bob.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONAfter being stuck in development hell for seemingly forever, Kevin caps off the 'Clerks' trilogy with a third and final entry; and if it wasn't for one more film to follow, fittingly bookend his entire filmography. But this is the world we live in: one where Kevin's film career appears to come to a sentimental and existential close, ending where it began, in the Quick Stop.Rhys and Kane revisit one of the most impactful cinematic experiences of their lives with this episode and see if the earnest ending is one deserving of praise.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONAfter Yoga Hosers, something quite big happened to Kevin Smith. Not a new child. Not a new big culture-shifting movie. But a heart attack. What happens to Kevo's career and filmography when the man is faced with death itself and has to confront it? Jay and Silent Bob Reboot happens: the most Kevin Smith movie ever made.In this View-Askew installment, determined to avenge their legal defeat to Saban Films, Jay and Silent Bob set out for LA to try and stop the shooting of a film being produced by the company (sounds a bit familiar). And on top of this, Kevo brings out an anthology horror film in the shape of an NFT (the less said about this one, the better).Rhys and Kane explore the start of a very existential version of Kevo, that has now shifted to a worldview that every day he has on earth is one gifted to him by fate.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONJust what the world asked for... a pseudo-sequel to Tusk. How did a get a film like Yoga Hosers from Kevin Smith? The answer: a lot of weed. It also seems you get an over-the-top vulgar animated film as well as a nice bonus. When Yoga Hosers sees Harley Quinn Smith and Lily Rose Depp play disinterested teenagers who fight-off tiny Bratwurst-Nazis, Jay and Silent Bob become hardcore superheroes in their own ugly cartoon dimension.Rhys and Kane take on a double billing of probably the strangest that Kevin has had to offer so far. Projects that you can't help but get a little confused about.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONAfter making a name for himself in the raunchy comedy space and becoming a becoming a bit of an icon for his relatable yet lightly flawed characters; Kevin changes course once again to something no one could have ever expected, horror movies.Opening this new chapter for Kev is 'Red State,' a pre-MAGA ultra-conservative threat cult thriller that keeps the vulgarity, but adds a layer of intensity - showing the visual literacy possessed by the film maker. Then comes a 70s homage body-horror, informed by so much stoner-energy that you can smell the weed-smoke emanating off of it, in the shape of 'Tusk.'Kane and Rhys unpack this new era for the director and how the change of style could hinder or build up his profile, and if the now prolific podcaster/stoner-icon/internet-personality knows how to do horror properly.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONIt seems the View-Askew bible is ACTUALLY closed now and we're onto a new phase for Kevo. Who would've known this next phase was making other people's movies? On one hand, the director steals Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks to make his own Judd Apatow movie, and on the other, he borrows Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and someone else's script to make a buddy cop film. Is this even the same guy we came to know and love as teenagers?Rhys and Kane dive head-first into this new phase and see which proves to be the kindest for the film maker that if anything... seems a bit lost at this point in his career.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONNow that the View-Askewniverse is all tied up and finished, Kevin decides to break the mold, pave a new course and go for a film he's never done before. Then he goes right back to where he started.Where Jersey Girl tells the world that Kevo is more than profanity and deadbeats working shitty jobs, Clerks II shoves the man right back into his comfort zone. Back to the Quickstop, with the same characters, the same banter, but a new coat of paint and a new era of their lives. How did this happen? How did the man so quickly go back on his promise to the world and to himself? Rhys and Kane investigate how a 'new era' for Kevin Smith ends up leading his right back to the beginning.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONThe KS universe finally comes together in a mega-mashup akin to the MCU's Infinity War. Just trade Spiderman for Bluntman, and infinity stones for joints. Jay and Silent Bob are the heroes this city needs. When best friends, Jay and Silent Bob discover that a major movie based on them is in production, the pair head to Hollywood to rightfully claim the royalty money they deserve.Rhys and Kane revisit the MOST Kevin Smith film there is: one that is solely made for fans of Kevin Smith.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONDid not think it would take only four films for Kevin Smith to take on Catholicism, Alan Rickman and God Him(Her)self. Looks like we're here and Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and along for the ride. Two fallen angels who were ejected from paradise find themselves banned in Wisconsin. They are now headed for New Jersey where they find a loophole that can get them back into heaven. The only catch is that it will destroy humanity. A group bands together to stop them.'Dogma' sees Kevin with a much larger budget and scale for this outing. Going from comments on young adult passivity, and relationship dynamics, to how religion should be overhauled entirely. A big task. Does it turn out to be a Revelation? Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONOur friend Kevo takes a step in a new direction - one towards a more mature film... a Spike Lee film (in Rhys' opinion). When two comic book artists meet a girl, one of them falls for her but the man's hopes are crushed when he finds that she is a lesbian.Kane and Rhys jump on this third entry to the View-Askew-niverse and debate over whether its the best direction for Kevin to take his subject matter a little more seriously, or if it comes across as too pretentious for anyone's good. KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONSo you've made "Clerks". You're the new hot kid on the block. You can make something great for almost no money. Hollywood is throwing you an opportunity to break it into the mainstream. Whatever you do: don't screw it up. "Mallrats" sees two best friends seek the comforts of the mall when their girlfriends leave them on the same day. After a day of distractions and discussions, they eventually decide to win their girlfriends back.Other than a magically appearing CD in Rhys' car one day, "Mallrats" has never had a massive impact on the hosts of Marathon Me. But this time, they're older, wiser, and recording a podcast about it. Will it be as much of a failure to them as it was critically? KEVIN SMITH FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONMarathon Me takes on another director. Feels a bit soon, doesn't it? Well, this one has been a long time coming. Rhys and Kane dive into the View-Askew-niverse, and look at all the films of Kevin Smith. The rightful and only place to start is Smith's first major hit that took indie-wood by storm. A simple and humble effort filmed entirely in and around a convenience store, all self-funded from Kevin's own credit card. The 90s gem is none-other than 'Clerks'.This old favourite of Rhys and Kane's holds a special role to play in their friendship - but this watch is a bit different: with this being the first time they're watching it as individuals older than our main characters. How does this change their impression of 'Clerks'?Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
BLACK CHRISTMAS FRANCHISE MARATHONChristmas 2024 may have already passed, but Marathon Me has one more Christmas task: to rank this trilogy of remakes. An oddity that Black Christmas never got any direct sequels, but instead reinvention after reinvention, all spanning from a spine-tingling original classic slasher.Kane and Rhys probably undertake one of the easiest rankings they've done so far - with some clear winners and clear losers. But filled with Christmas spirit and an apatite for some great holiday horror films, neither of the boys are losing. Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
BLACK CHRISTMAS FRANCHISE MARATHONA far more modern interpretation of "Black Christmas," all inclusive with a nice sheen of amateurism and (attempted) elevation. With holidays around the corner, Riley and her friends prepare for a Christmas party. But when a masked stalker targets girls and goes on a killing spree, they decide to fight back.Following the 2006 remake, Kane and Rhys' hopes are not very high for this one. Ultimately, they find themselves tasting a whole new flavour of bad, but at least this one has a vision?Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
BLACK CHRISTMAS FRANCHISE MARATHONIn the thirty years since the original, movies changed quite a lot. But horror changed A LOT. From a film that inspired Halloween, how do we think this 2006 Dimension slasher film with fare?A murdering sociopath escapes prison and returns to his childhood home. However, he finds out that his house has been converted into a sorority house and begins killing the students living there.Kane and Rhys go into this remake with hesitancy, but an open mind, only to find that there is a bit of a reason this remake has been forgotten to time.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
BLACK CHRISTMAS FRANCHISE MARATHONMarathon Me gets festive this holiday season; but of course with a bit more blood, plastic bag kills and a freak in the attic than you're usual family Christmas (most of the time). The boys take on the trilogy of remakes that is the 'Black Christmas' franchise. As winter break begins, a group of sorority sisters begin to receive anonymous, lascivious phone calls. Soon, some of the sorority girls go missing from the house, and a local adolescent girl is murdered, leading the girls to suspect a serial killer is on the loose. But no one realises just how near the culprit is.This original 'Black Christmas' is a grand-daddy of the slasher genre, meaning Rhys and Kane not only explore the spirit of Christmas, but also the spirit of a staple Marathon Me genre for the pair.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONOne marathon, spanning three decades and nine films.PTA touches on many themes, taking our hosts from the porn industry on the 1970s, to the oil rush on the late 1800s, and what it means to grieve in a contemporary turn into the 2000s. But one thing runs true... this director knows what he's doing.Rhys and Kane try to rank their individual favourite Paul Thomas Anderson films, to varying results; as well as discuss some predictions of the future of this auteur.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONThere's very little stranger than the transition from adolescence to adulthood... and the fact that maybe it may never happen. Licorice Pizza is one of those 'vibe movies' where you're transported to another era, an earlier time in your life, and a place where maybe your ethics are put on hold temporarily so that you can feel something pretty intenseThe film follows the story of Alana Kane, an adult afraid of losing her youth, and Gary Valentine, a teenager trying to suppress his. They go through the treacherous navigation of first love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973.The boys watch PTA's most recent film, diving in on if they thought the romance was necessary to go in the direction it did, and if it means that you're a freak if you're into this movie.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHONThe first PTA film set outside of L.A., this journey puts us in a new location, and on a new path for the director. Quiet, slow, serious and mature. Renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril are at the center of British fashion in 1950s London. Women come and go in Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship. His carefully tailored existence soon gets disrupted by Alma, a young and strong-willed woman who becomes his muse and lover.Kane and Rhys enter a more elevated lifestyle, escaping the chaos of the 70s adult film industry, or American Western oil-rush, and instead explore something with a bit of... order.Podcast Instagram: @marathonme_officialPodcast Facebook page: @marathonmeofficalEmail: marathonmepodc@gmail.com
