Appearing as the final tale in his short story collection, Dubliners, James Joyce builds the complex atmosphere of a Holiday dance in Dublin.   One thing to look out for is how the point of view of the narrative changes constantly, almost like it's a living thing. The use of phrasing is also noteworthy, sometimes sharp and staccato, and sometimes smooth and flowing. It's as though the language itself has a tempo, texture, and pitch all its own. As though the story were a musical piece in and of itself. Hopefully this becomes even clearer in an audio format. Over the course of 30 years, Bierce nearly weekly wrote a cynical definition of a common word, sometimes consisting of poems, which he sold to various newspapers and periodicals. After 30 years, he collected all of these into one volume which came to be called The Devil's Dictionary.
