Description
"loves music" is a podcast, hosted by me, Julian Jones, that celebrates music and the moments that made us fall in love with it. It’s for music-lovers who, despite the demands of life, remain passionate about their beloved albums and artists and still seek to discover new talent, whether online, internationally, or within the sweaty crowded bars of your hometown. It’s in us! We don't know why we do it; we just do… and we refuse to grow out of it.
Every Thursday, I interview artists past and present about making music: their inspiration, their challenges, and the moments they will never forget.
If you love or even have a dysfunctional relationship with music, come along, and share this show with someone who loves music.

Ep.025: Some artists build their sound around what’s trendy. Others build it around what’s true. Matt Fell falls into the latter. A Philly-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Matt blends raw vulnerability with polished production, pulling from classic rock, indie pop, R&B, and everything in between. In this episode, we unpack the emotional weight behind his debut solo album Flashbulb Memories, how his degenerative hearing loss has become an unexpected creative advantage, and why he initially struggled to share his work with the world. It’s a conversation about perfectionism, ego, identity, and the kind of growth that only happens when you stop hiding and start telling the truth. We Chat About:Why he didn’t promote Flashbulb Memories after release—and what changedDegenerative hearing loss and how it shaped his attention to productionThe inspiration behind songs like “Living a Lie,” “Coffee,” and “Breakfast”Rewriting identity without substances, and how coffee became a metaphorThe moment music went from chore to calling (shoutout to Mr. Gonsi)Making music that’s both deeply personal and weirdly universalRejecting genre rules and still writing bangersNavigating vulnerability, rejection, and being “enough” without performingHow songwriting often starts with… ice cream cake debatesThe myth of the starving artist vs. creating from a place of wellnessWhy the next wave of pop might sound like it was made in a bedroomAbout Matt Fell:Born outside Philadelphia in 1993, Matt has been involved with music since he was young. Through grade school he picked up piano, trumpet, drums, guitar and bass. In high school, Matt discovered his love for recorded music and has been writing and producing since and has appeared in various bands and acts through the years. In 2022, Matt released his debut solo album Flashbulb Memories, which he co-produced with close friend Matt Weber. In 2023 Matt released a song called Keep Going alongside Luke O’Brien that has been featured on WHYY. Also in 2023 Matt composed the film score for the movie I Think I’m Sick with co-writer John Wiater, which has gone on to win many awards at The Rhode Island Film Festival, New York Film Festival, and Philadelphia Film Festival to name a few. In 2024 Matt released a new single called Living A Lie and opened for singer/songwriter Marielle Kraft on tour. Ep.023: Kevin McClure isn’t interested in chasing trends; he’s here to build something real. In this conversation, we get into the tension between commercial appeal and creative integrity, and how Kevin navigates that tightrope without losing sight of the why. He opens up about the scrappy hustle behind his early national tours, his songwriting process that prioritizes both resonance and risk, and why he thinks pop music deserves more respect when done right. We talk metaphor, mental health, and the quiet discipline of making timeless music in a culture that wants fast and forgettable. Whether you’re in a creative rut or trying to figure out how to stay true to your sound, this one will speak to you.We Chat About:The songwriting philosophy behind his EP Cheating DeathHow his song “Dancing Bears” uses metaphor to explore fear, control, and human natureWhy he believes music should be boiled down, not watered downTouring the country before building a local fanbase—and how that workedHis DIY approach to booking shows, building an audience, and staying in the blackBalancing authenticity and accessibility as a pop songwriterThe power of relatability in short-form video (and how he accidentally went viral)What keeps him centered as an artist, dad, and creatorHis side project podcast This One’s a Doozy, made with his wifeThe mission of Good Life Records and how to support independent musiciansAbout Kevin McClure:Kevin McClure has two criteria for his music: the lyrics must be written earnestly and the instrumentation must be ambitious- utilizing a broad scope of music theory, timbre, and genre. Whether it’s music written for a quiet night at home or for blasting loud while driving down the highway, his songs are for people who want profound lyrics and eclectic musicality. In this episode, I reconnect with the powerhouse vocalist and songwriter whose voice first landed on one of my records over a decade ago. Since then, Brookelyn has carved out her lane as a genre-bending force, mixing country grit, soulful edge, and pop-rock power into songs that hit as hard as they heal. We talk about the business of staying creative, the trap of perfectionism, and how her music lives at the intersection of soft strength and fearless storytelling. Ep.021: There’s no one like IMVNI. Born on “Planet X” and raised in Louisiana, her music folds jazz, R&B, rock, and soul into a sonic experience that’s both otherworldly and deeply rooted. In this conversation, we break down her incredible debut album The 11th Hour, a genre-defiant project woven with love, grief, prayer, and psychedelic grooves. She opens up about how addiction shaped her storytelling, how recording her grandmother’s voice gave the album its soul, and why she nearly walked away from music altogether. But it’s her belief in art as medicine that carries this conversation, and her music, straight to the heart. We Chat About:The story behind her debut album The 11th HourHow soulful, genre-fluid music is making a quiet resurgenceWhy she records everything, from jam sessions to her grandma’s voiceThe healing power of vulnerability in songwritingCrafting emotionally complex songs in Audacity and sending them into the worldNavigating suicidal thoughts, grief, and creative block through soundWhat she learned from SZA, Tyler the Creator, and Travis ScottThe importance of intimacy in live performance, and how she brings the whole room into her setHer message to anyone feeling overwhelmed, alone, or creatively stuckWhy she believes music (and life) should leave you with one clear truth: you’re gonna be okayAbout IMVNI:IMVNI (IMANI) means FAITH. IMVNI (IMANI) is a genre bending artist born on an unknown Planet, Planet X. Her style is a fusion of experimental R&B, Soul, Jazz , and Rock with a sad edge. Her family left planet X in the 90s and moved to Louisiana. Her love for southern Hip Hop influences her sound with heavy bass and robust drums. IMVNI’s hypnotizing vocal style ranges from soft and angelic to gritty and diabolical. She credits her lively stage presence, which includes vignettes of inspiration, to being brought up in a small southern church. On her debut album, The 11th Hour, IMVNI talks to her Grandmother (Grammy) as they explore love, loss, and heartbreak.Connect with IMVNI:Instagram: @imvni.musicSpotify: IMVNI on SpotifyApple Music: IMVNI on Apple MusicYouTube: IMVNI on YouTubeTidal: IMVNI on TidalWebsite: imvni.comOther Resources:Follow the OFFICIAL “loves music” playlist on Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/library/playlist/p.4Y0J406i03DQrX“loves music” playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0qE3kq89oyg3tFNbmRfHEO?si=vopaKQnNS8OHn0r2fFTVBgCheck out the “loves music” podcast website: https://www.podpage.com/loves-music/Julian on Facebook:
Ep.020: What happens when a film composer decides to stop playing it cool and finally puts his own name, and heart, into the music? In this episode, I talk with RIMENY, the alt-pop project of Zak Engel, who’s flipping the script on what it means to “arrive late” as an artist. We get into the personal stories behind his debut singles, the decade-long detour that led him back to performing, and the surprising beauty in releasing music that feels earnest, not engineered. If you’ve ever wrestled with timing, self-doubt, or finding your creative lane later than expected… this one will hit.We Chat About:His journey from film composer to front-facing pop artistWhy he waited over a decade to release his own musicLetting go of imitation and learning to write honestlyBuilding a music career while raising a familyThe magic of creating songs that feel “happy, cool, and earnest”How Sweet Tea and Matt capture real friendship and nostalgiaThe tension between chasing perfection and letting goWhy confidence (and not playing it cool) can change your whole approachThe beauty of building slow, sustainable momentumAbout RIMENY:Who is RIMENY? RIMENY is the alt-pop alter-ego of Zak Engel. Hi! It’s me, Zak. I’ve spent over a decade behind a desk scoring films, mixing, and geeking over sound design. Songwriting and performing have been stuck in the backseat–RIMENY puts them at the wheel. The Sound I’ve been listening to The 1975, Mk.gee, Dijon, Bon Iver, Bleachers, Holly Humberstone, Jack’s Mannequin, Brand New, Miles Davis, Paul Desmond, Charli XCX, Armlock, Small Pond…and…yeah they’re all in the RIMENY sound. But I’m in this music more than any “band” I’ve ever had. I’m a late bloomer, and I feel like I’m finally hearing my influences in my songwriting without having them dominate the whole sound. It’s new. I’m figuring it out :) What’s Out Now: Three singles: Matt, Sweet Tea, and Treat Me Like a Stranger, are streaming. They are a taste of the debut album, set to drop in a few months. One more single is coming in a few weeks. Some of these songs are old…like ten years old…and are finally getting the attention they deserve–in some cases reworking an intense imitation track into something much more honest. Time…this all takes time. The Team RIMENY has already had a stellar crew of collaborators: Molly McDevitt, Justin VanDommelen, Sam Kyzivat, John Waugh, Leo Egan, Dave Weingarten, Ruairi O’Flaherty, Jared Hazelton, and Joe Murphy. Secret sauce and helping hands behind RIMENY’s sound. What’s Next Once the album’s out, I want to get in front of YOU. Hit the stage…dance…you know. Put something together that’s somewhere between a Bleachers show and a Mk.gee show. :)Connect with RIMENY:Instagram: @_rimenyTikTok: @_rimenySpotify: RIMENYOther Resources:Follow the OFFICIAL “loves music” playlist on Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/library/playlist/p.4Y0J406i03DQrX“loves music” playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0qE3kq89oyg3tFNbmRfHEO?si=vopaKQnNS8OHn0r2fFTVBgCheck out the “loves music” podcast website:

Kirsten Izer isn’t trying to find her sound; she’s already living in it. Her debut EP The Perfect Hire is a genre-blurring, emotionally precise collection that pulls just as much from ambient indie pop as it does from confessional folk and sludgy alt-rock. In this conversation, we unpack how Kirsten built this body of work from the ground up: writing, co-producing, self-directing her visuals, and filtering every choice through her exacting taste. She opens up about moving through heartbreak, making space for imperfection, and the long game of building a real career while holding a full-time job. Through it all, Kirsten shows us what it means to take your time and still show up with something undeniable. We Chat About:The emotional and sonic process behind The Perfect HireLetting go of old versions of songs (and self) to stay true to the visionLearning to shut out noise and trust your gut as a young artistHow heartbreak and mental health show up in her lyricsBuilding a cohesive visual aesthetic without losing authenticityThe balance between promoting and preserving your mental healthWhy she’s staying active post-release instead of disappearingTouring dreams, pop girlies, and what she listens to on repeatAbout Kirsten Izer:Kirsten Izer has been writing songs since she was 11-years-old. Born in New Jersey to visual artist parents, Izer has always felt a deep need to tell stories. Her father taught her the chords to Pink Floyd’s “Vera”, the same chords she used to teach herself a Taylor Swift song. Since then, her inspiration has expanded to the likes of Kate Bush, St. Vincent, Caroline Polachek and more; it is still that same juxtaposition that shows up in her work today—an equal amount of affection for an instrumental break, but also a well-told story. After a five year stint in New York as a music publicist and journalist, Izer decided it was time to tell her own story as an artist and packed her bags for Los Angeles. She’s released various singles and self-directed music videos to much acclaim, and is gearing up to release her debut EP, The Perfect Hire, on June 5, 2025.Connect with Kirsten Izer:Instagram: @thekirstenizerYouTube: Kirsten IzerTikTok: @thekirstenizerSpotify: Kirsten IzerConnect with Julian:Check out the “loves music” podcast website: https://www.podpage.com/loves-music/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/julian.jones.9484Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/julianjones417/Threads: https://www.threads.net/@julianjones417Buy my book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B6QYX6RLMusic Mentioned in this Episode:Songs:“The Perfect Hire” – Kirsten Izer“The Messenger” – Kirsten Izer“Electric Blue” – Kirsten Izer“You” – Kirsten...

In this special Father’s Day edition of “loves music,” I sit down with my dad—James Jones, drummer of the legendary Philly funk band Breakwater—for a conversation that’s part history lesson, part love letter to music, and part family moment. We dig into his upbringing in Germantown during the golden era of soul and jazz, how neighborhood bands shaped his ear, and what it was like coming up in one of the funkiest bands of the late ’70s. From backing singers in church basements to opening for Earth, Wind & Fire, he breaks down the journey with honesty, humility, and a few laughs at my expense. We Chat About:The culture of music in 1960s Philadelphia and how it kept kids off the streetsSneaking down to the basement to play records and mimic drummers with makeshift kitsHis natural talent for rhythm, and the scarcity of snare drum spots in schoolEarly jam sessions in church that led to forming BreakwaterWhat made Philly’s funk scene competitive but collaborativeBreakwater’s unique sound and why they didn’t want to be the “next Earth, Wind & Fire”Opening for icons and the moment they almost had to cut a disco trackWhy he stepped away from the band, and how becoming a father changed his prioritiesThe unexpected comeback, playing shows in London, and Daft Punk sampling their work in Iron Man 2His thoughts on legacy, musical advice for young artists, and what’s next for Breakwater’s third actAbout James Jones:James Jones is most widely known as the drummer of Breakwater. The band, still comprised of five original members, was met with a warm reception and continued to sell out venues as if they had never split. A musical cameo in Iron Man 2 helped expand their visibility. At seventy-plus, the band still has new music on the horizon and concert dates on the calendar.James currently resides in Telford, PA. Now, a grandfather (and great-grandfather), he is known for his warm smile and generous spirit and is a joy to all those he encounters.A world-class musician. A top-tier human being. A loving father.
