Here at The Longlist, we celebrate movies and other pop culture through the storied art of rankings. There are no wrong answers. There are no bad opinions. And hot takes are always encouraged. We love movies and we love talking about them even more. Throughout each episode we’ll dissect a given topic, be it a director, actor, genre, studio, ore even just a single movie that we really want to deep dive. And the way we really break down each topic is through a series of rankings, usually in the form of a ”top five,” ranging from serious film criticism to whimsical anecdotes. And finally at the end of each episode, we have our main top five list, which we have deemed the short list. Come for the short list and stay for the long list. Nothing we say will ever be the end all be all. On the contrary, we hope it will encourage similar conversations with you and your friends. We have a lot of fun and we hope you will too.

Music is a quintessential part of the movie experience, both from the filmmaking side and the audience side. When to use it, how to use it and everything in between. The way movies utilize music has a lasting impact on the way we as viewer consume and interact with them. In this episode, Josh and Jack are joined by Drew Wolff and break down some of our favorite movie scores to date. It's our breakdown of the year 2025. In this episode, we have a couple of classic lists, we'll give out the first annual Longlist Awards, and finish off with Josh and Jack revealing their top ten films of 2025. Another Wild Card episode. Happy New Year, everyone. Jack and Josh took last week off and are back at it with a bunch of fun lists, and an on mic strategy session that Jack was not allowed to prep for. And we finish off the episode with both brothers bringing a list that the other does not know about. It could be as long as they want and on anything they want. It was a lot of fun and we're all excited about what 2026 looks like for The Longlist.

Hey everyone and welcome to The Longlist. This is our inaugural episode and our goal this first one is for you to get to know your hosts, brothers Josh and Jack, a little bit more. We give some take on the Oscars (at the time of recording) and have some more personally oriented top fives for you leading up to our rankings of the films in our respective birth years, 1985 and 1991. But we still cover a wide range of movies and we hope you have fun with it. Enjoy!

Happy Holidays, all. Jack and Josh run through a bunch of old stand-by lists, in the spirit of rewatching the same holiday movies every year. We hit the classics and also have some fun wrinkles to add. We love holiday movies here at the long list and try to do them justice with this episode. We have a bit of a different episode today on The Longlist. Jack and Josh try to make sense of all the different angles of the Warner Bros. sale. It's an impossible task, but they gave it the old college try. At the end of the episode they touch on a few minor news stories around the world of Hollywood.
On a final note, a few hours after recording, the news of the deaths of both Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner broke. What a tragic loss that shook the world of movies to it's core. We're sure to do a Rob Reiner episode down the line, but we didn't talk about it much in this podcast because it happened after recording. Thoughts, love and prayers go out to the family and loved ones.

In this episode, Jack and Josh are joined by their good friend, Austin Thompson to discuss one of the wildest and most endearing comedies of the 90s, Dumb and Dumber. Remember when studios use to make comedies? Like, all the time? It doesn't seem to happen as much anymore, but the mid 90s were ripe with comedies and this one is one of the best. And Jim Carrey hit the scene like a wildfire and took over Hollywood for a few years. We had a lot of fun breaking down this movie and we hope you have fun listening.

It's the ROMANTIC COMEDY DRAFT!!! For this episode, Josh and Jack are joined by their respective significant others, Jack's fiance, Alex and Josh's wife, Rebecca. For the draft, the goal is to create your ideal romantic comedy using other aspects of iconic rom coms. We had 9 categories to fill out and four drafters, so that totaled 36 movies drafted in all. We had a bunch of fun talking about all these movies and left some really big ones un-drafted as well. Enjoy!

This week Josh's wife, Rebecca joins Jack and Josh to talk about one of the most beloved and endearing movies of all time, Casablanca. We ranked a bunch of lists pertaining to the movie but we also use the movie as inspiration for other lists to highlight some other movies. We love talking old Hollywood and this film is possibly the best representation of that time. It's a timeless classic and we had a blast breaking it down.

It's spooky season so we had to break down a spooky movie. Jack's hosting today and we're talking about the Stanley Kubrick classic, The Shining, one of Jack's all time favorite movies. We're taking a stab at our first draft here at The Longlist. The topic of the draft is crime movies and or goal is to create our ideal crime movie by selecting other elements from films in the genre. The eight categories we selected were: Cop/detective, Criminal, Crew, Set Piece, MacGuffin, Love interest/Femme Fatale, Twist, and Setting/Vibe. Adam Murray joined Josh and Jack again. We're doing something special for our 25th episode! Jack and I have always liked ranking movies, hence the structure of the podcast, and we decided to put it all out there and give our top 25 favorite movies of all time. It was a long and arduous journey, but we made it and we're happy with our lists. If you ask us next week, the list might change, but at some point we just need to make some decisions. In this episode, we are taking stock of the year so far. We do our first Oscar race check in, we cover some of the movies that are getting buzz from various film festivals and put our finger on the pulse that is the movie year of 2025, at least to this point. The bulk of the episode is us discussing our favorite five movies of 2025 to this point. We HIGHLY expect our end of the year list to look very differently as there are a TON of movies yet to come out. But this is our near halfway point check in. We had a lot of fun, got into some arguments and got a little serious at times too. Enjoy.

Well, we've finally come to this. We mention Titanic, quite accidentally, in a number of our episodes to this point. So we decided, for good and all, to dedicate an entire episode to James Cameron's epic Oscar winner, Titanic. Josh and Jack are joined by Jack's fiance, Alex Ball this week.
