The Weekly Scramble features Mike Frattallone and Chris Reuvers’ light hearted look at daily life in the State of Minnesota. Twice a week they bring their unique, common-sense conservatives approach to the current headlines. Minnesota’s nearly $9 billion hospitality industry “is on the brink of no return,” according to a new report warning that years of mounting regulation and economic uncertainty threaten to decimate a key part of the state’s economy. The new survey from Hospitality Minnesota found that only a third of restaurants, hotels and other tourism businesses expect a better spring than last year. In contrast, nearly three-quarters expected a better spring in 2021.“We’ve not recovered since the pandemic,” said Angie Whitcomb, Hospitality Minnesota’s president and CEO. “We are at a point now where it is dire and we’re starting to see the effects of this.”ALSO: (Courtesy of Alpha News and Liz Collin)EXCLUSIVE: Spending on nonprofits has doubled in a decade in Minnesota’s most-populated county, says entrepreneur"I think that people, as they've learned more about how those tax dollars have been wasted and defrauded, they're surprised at first and I think there just comes to be this point of, candidly, just a little bit of anger," said Kevin Peterson.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Minnesotans could pay upward of $20 billion every year in a few decades if the state doesn’t adapt to climate change, according to a new study from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The Legislature-mandated report, which was released Monday, March 16, says the costs of not adapting to the warming climate are higher than if the state began to make necessary changes.Minnesota has seen heavier rainfall, smokier air and warmer summers in recent years as a result of climate change, according to the report.“Investing in adaptation reduces costly risks to the state and its residents,” the report said.If the state invests more in climate projects, it could cost $2.5 billion to $4.1 billion annually, considerably less than what the long-term negative effects are expected to cost Minnesota. Expenses for failure to adapt could balloon up to $57 billion by 2070.After a bill to lower license tab fees failed in the Minnesota House transportation committee, the cost is unlikely to go down anytime soon.In 2023, the legislature increased the tax rate for license tab fees, while at the same time dramatically slowing the rate of depreciation, so you pay a higher rate on an artificially high valuation on your vehicle. There’s a bill in the house to lower the license tab tax rate from 1.575% of your vehicle’s value to 1.285%, while also speeding up the depreciation of your car.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
A professional cornhole player and quadruple amputee has been formally charged with murder and multiple related offenses in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred in Charles County on March 22, 2026. Dayton James Webber, 27, of La Plata, Md., was arraigned in the District Court of Maryland for Charles County after being located in Charlottesville, Virginia, and arrested following the fatal shooting of 27‑year‑old Bradrick Michael Wells, according to court documents. United Airlines is launching the North American version of the Air New Zealand Skycouch idea: a dedicated row of three economy seats whose leg rests flip up after takeoff to create a couch or bed-like surface, with a mattress pad, extra bedding, pillows, and family-oriented amenities. It launches next year, sits between Economy and Premium Plus, and United calls it the “Relax Row.” They plan for ‘up to’ 12 sections per widebody aircraft and a rollout to 200+ widebodies by 2030.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he’s replacing Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem with a Republican U.S. senator from Oklahoma.Trump revealed his decision in a post on Truth Social, saying Sen. Markwayne Mullin will take over on March 31.“The current Secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida. I thank Kristi for her service at ‘Homeland,'” Trump wrote. The president’s announcement comes two days after Noem faced a grilling on Capitol Hill from both GOP members and Democrats. During that hearing, Noem defended DHS’s immigration enforcement tactics and pushed back against criticism from Democrats who say she wrongly disparaged Renee Good and Alex Pretti after they were killed by federal agents in Minneapolis.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Lumber Exchange building in Minneapolis is set to change hands for a dollar this week, going to Kristi Oman—the same person who two years ago bought the Kickernick Building, another old downtown property, and transformed it into a hub for artists. That, or something like it, is likely to be the fate of the 12-story Lumber Exchange building. In chats with Twin Cities Business, Oman mentioned she wants to keep the roughly 140-year-old, 225,569-square-foot space commercial (rather than making residencies out of it), converting it for artists and folks in the fashion industry. The official sale price will be $20,001, Oman says. In addition to the $1 price tag, she must pay a $20,000 fee for taking the property off auction. Oman owns Space Unlimited, a Minneapolis real estate company specializing in restoration of historic buildings.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
BREAKING: Gavin Newsome’s California is attempting to make history by electing the first registered sex offender into office in the Fresno city council. This isn’t clickbait, Rene Campos says he has ‘been given the chance to rehabilitate through the courts and back into the system.’Campos also says it’s time to ‘choose somebody outside the box, somebody who knows the system from inside out, because me, I have experienced the laws that we are trying to reform right now.’If Rene wins he still will be prohibited from entering a school site or being around children. California state law does not prevent a registered sex offender to run for office. This is what Democrats have created, it’s not a joke anymore.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced his brand new $127 Billion dollar annual budget, it was nice knowing you New York.......Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a record $127 billion budget Tuesday — with an ultimatum to Albany to tax the rich or he’ll slap the Big Apple with a massive property tax hike. The democratic socialist framed his proposal — which would also include pulling from the city’s $10 billion rainy day fund — as a “last resort” to balance the budget if Gov. Kathy Hochul doesn’t agree to increase taxes on millionaires. “I do not want to raise property taxes,” Mamdani said of his preliminary budget plan, which would hike property taxes 9.5% to raise an additional $3.7 billion in the next fiscal year.“When faced with this crisis, the question is who should pay these taxes? I believe that it should be the wealthiest New Yorkers, the most profitable corporations. I believe that they can afford to pay a little bit more,” Mamdani said.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
