Description

HIDE FM - Podcast is a work of art by artist Garrett Phelan. It takes the form of 28 imagined and performed monologues on 28 birds that are visitors to the Rogerstown Estuary, Lusk, North County Dublin, Ireland. They were performed by Garrett from October 2023 - January 2024 in Millbrook Studios, Rathfarnham, Dublin. They were originally transmitted via an independent radio station HIDE FM during Spring 2025. The podcast is a sensitive exploration of the Fragility of our ecosystem. Garrett explores the status, sound, diet, breeding patterns, movement and folklore of each bird type, with ‘sonic interruptions’ interspersed into the podcasts. They were performed and created to depict viewing birds during the seasons of Autumn/Winter/Early Spring at the location of THE HIDE SCULPTURE, Lusk, Co.Dublin. 12 of the 28 birds he features are on the endangered RED list. 10 of the birds are on the endangered AMBER list and 6 are on the GREEN LIST. The HIDE FM - Podcast IS NOT REAL. It is an ‘IMAGINED, PERFECT’ landscape. Each week we will release a podcast that will focus on one particular bird from the area.

SPARROWHAWK. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Spioróg’.  The Latin name is ‘ACCIPITER NISUS’. It is a GREEN LISTED bird in Ireland. Some collective nouns for this bird and other hawks include, a cast of, a lease of, a kettle of, a boil of. A male Sparrowhawk was orignally called a 'musket' in Norman times. The name given to the bolt on a cross bow and again the name of a hand gun. You can find it spontaneoulsy eating its kill in your backgarden, quite a sight to behold. They usually symbolise grace and power and in some cultures are are seen to represent, courage, strength, rebirth, hope, good luck and fortune. In celtic mythology it is often associated with warriors and queens.Listen to more slurping tea, munching nuts, drawing, scribbling sounds whilst humming and random ramblings from Garrett while he imagines to look at this lovely bird from THE HIDE SCULPTURE.HIDE FM is a Per Cent for Art commission by Fingal County Council. Please FOLLOW / SUBSCRIBE!Send all of your questions regarding this podcast to info@garrettphelan.com

Garrett also talks about the Heronry in Bushy Park and how in the early twilight hours the forest can evoke an eerie prehistoric scene.Listen to more slurping tea, munching nuts, drawing, scribbling sounds whilst humming and random ramblings from Garrett while he imagines to look at this lovely bird from THE HIDE SCULPTURE.HIDE FM is a Per Cent for Art commission by Fingal County Council. Please FOLLOW / SUBSCRIBE!Send all of your questions regarding this podcast to info@garrettphelan.com

CURLEW - NUMENIUS ARQUATA

CURLEW - NUMENIUS ARQUATA

This week Garrett is imagining to look at a well talked about bird called a CURLEW. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Crotach' which means humped or hump-backed.  Their large, long bill is soft and flexible. The Latin name is ‘NUMENIUS ARQUATA’. Sadly this bird is being hugely recognised as a highly endangered bird and is a RED listed bird in Ireland. It is estimated that there is only 100 - 138 breeding pairs in Ireland. It is one of our most beautiful waders with a fabulous, distinctive, yearning call. Garrett says when he hears the Curlew call, it gives him a great sense of belonging and relates it similarly to when he hears the sound of the Uilleann Pipes. Curlews can live up to 20 - 30 years old.HIDE FM is a Per Cent for Art commission by Fingal County Council. Please FOLLOW / SUBSCRIBE!Send all of your questions to info@garrettphelan.com
This week Garrett is imagining to look at a bird called a GOLDEN PLOVER. Its name in the Irish Language is ‘Feadóg bhuí’. The Latin name is ‘Pluvialis Apricaria’. Sadly this bird is a RED listed bird in Ireland. Some interesting trivia here. Garrett relays the Origin of Guinness World Records where on 10 November 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Breweries, went on a shooting party in the North Slob, by the River Slaney in County Wexford, Ireland. After missing a shot at a Eurasian golden plover, he became involved in an argument over which was the fastest game bird in Europe, the golden plover or the red grouse (the former being correct). That evening at Castlebridge House, he realised that it was impossible to confirm in reference books whether or not the golden plover was Europe's fastest game bird. Beaver knew that there must be numerous other questions debated nightly in pubs throughout Ireland, but there was no book in the world with which to settle arguments about records. He realised then that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular. A Guinness employee told Sir Hugh of two twin brothers, Norris and Ross McWhirter, who had opened a fact checking agency in London. Sir Hugh interviewed the brothers and, impressed by their prodigious knowledge, commissioned the book. Later, he published the first Guinness World Records which became a best seller within months.HIDE FM is a Per Cent for Art commission by Fingal County Council. Please FOLLOW / SUBSCRIBE!Send all of your questions to info@garrettphelan.com
This week Garrett is imagining to look at a bird called a LITTLE GREBE. It’s name in the Irish Language is ‘Spágaire tonn’. The Latin name is ‘Tachybaptus ruficollis’. Happy to say it is a GREEN listed bird in Ireland. It swims like a duck, it looks like a duck, but it's not a duck! It is a small bird and the smallest of the GREBE family. AKA 'Dabchick'. It has a bonkers but lovely distinctive shrill type call. A brilliant little diver. Due to its Hydrodynamic missile like shape underwater, it finds it hard to walk on land.HIDE FM is a Per Cent for Art commission by Fingal County Council.
This week Garrett is imagining to look at a bird called a LAPWING. One of his favourites.  It is a WADER. It’s name in the Irish Language is ‘Pilibín’. The Latin name is ‘Vanellus Vanellus’. It is RED LISTED in Ireland. The collective noun for Lapwings is a Deceit of Lapwings. One of the best birds to listen to, sounds like a mobile phone. Beautiful to watch in flight while roding the air with its round tipped wings. Lots of other facts and finds also and an array of other bird life in the background.
