How much revenue can a private practice actually generate? In this episode, I break down the simple equation behind private practice revenue and show how the math works in both insurance-based and cash-pay practices. We’ll talk about how revenue ultimately comes down to two numbers: the number of patients you see and the revenue you generate per patient. Once you understand that formula, it becomes much easier to model what your future practice could look like. If you’re planning a private practice and want help running the numbers, I walk through this exercise step-by-step inside my Plan to Practice digital course, where you can plug in your own assumptions and explore different revenue scenarios. 📌 Resources: Wondering if Private Practice is right for you? Today’s episode is a little special — it’s my birthday. 🎉 And in honor of that, we’re talking about something I hear all the time from physicians considering private practice: “I’m too old to start now.” Maybe you’re 40. Maybe you’re 48. Maybe you’re 55. You feel like you missed your window. Like it would’ve been easier 10 years ago. Like starting over now just doesn’t make sense. In this short Thursday Shift episode, we reframe that thought completely. You’re not starting from scratch, you’re starting from experience. We’ll talk about: Why mid-career physicians often have a strategic advantage The math of how much runway you actually have left Why clarity and alignment matter more than age The real question you should be asking instead If private practice has been quietly pulling at you, this episode is your reminder: courage doesn’t expire. And if this podcast has encouraged you at all, I’d be so grateful if you’d leave a review as a birthday gift — it helps more physicians realize that private practice is still possible. Opening a private practice? Don’t overlook your medical supply strategy. In this episode, I walk through how to create a master medical supply list before you open, how to evaluate and find a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO), why you shouldn’t over-order inventory in the beginning, and how to track usage from day one. One of the best pieces of advice I received when starting my own practice was this: buy only what you need...you can always order more later. Because inventory sitting on your shelves is cash not in your bank account. If you’re launching an insurance-based or cash-pay private practice, this episode will help you protect your margins and build smarter operational systems from the start. 📌 Resources: Wondering if Private Practice is right for you? Asking other physicians to refer to your private practice can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. In this Thursday Shift episode, I explore the mindset behind that hesitation — and why asking for referrals isn’t self-promotion, but leadership. If visibility feels awkward or you’ve been quietly hoping patients will “just find you,” this episode will help you reframe the discomfort and take small, courageous steps forward.   Ready for more support? If you’ve ever thought, “I can’t do this by myself,” when it comes to starting your private practice — this episode is for you. Building a practice can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to figure out legal structures, billing, marketing, EHRs, and operations on your own. But here’s the truth: you were never meant to build this in isolation. In this 5-minute mindset shift, I’ll help you reframe the fear of “doing it alone” into something far more powerful — strategic support. Private practice isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about building wisely. Ready for structure and support? If you’re in the early stages and want a clear, step-by-step roadmap, my course Plan to Practice will walk you through building your business plan and mapping out your private practice with clarity. Choosing an EHR is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when building your private practice — and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed during demos and sales calls. In this episode, I walk you through five EHR red flags to watch for before signing a contract, including: Clunky workflows that drain efficiency Unclear or hidden costs Limited reporting capabilities Rigid contracts Weak support systems You don’t need the “perfect” EHR — you need one that supports your practice model and protects your time, energy, and revenue. 🎁 Download the free checklist mentioned in this episode: 15 Questions to Ask Before Choosing an EHR   📌 Resources: Wondering if Private Practice is right for you? Social media doesn’t have to feel overwhelming — and it definitely doesn’t have to wait until your practice doors are open. In this episode, I’m talking directly to physicians who are building or preparing to launch their own practice and know they need to start marketing, but aren’t sure how to use social media strategically without burning out. Instead of chasing trends or trying to be everywhere, this episode reframes social media as a marketing tool and walks through four key questions every physician should answer before they start posting. In this episode, we cover: Why social media is infrastructure — not a personality test How to decide where your ideal patient already spends time online How often you can realistically post (and why batching matters) What to talk about without giving away everything you know Why engagement after you post is just as important as posting itself I also reference Episode #7: How My Facebook Launch Got 700+ Shares as a real-world example of what’s possible when social media is used intentionally. Ready for a real plan? If social media still feels overwhelming, that’s not a personal failure — it just means you don’t have a strategy yet. I offer a 90-minute strategy call where we build your social media plan together — platform choice, posting rhythm, content focus, and engagement — all aligned with the practice you’re building and the season you’re in. Have you ever thought, “I don’t trust myself to figure this out” when it comes to private practice? In this short mindset shift, I’m talking directly to that fear—and gently dismantling it. In this episode, we cover: Why you don’t need to have everything figured out to move forward The myth that successful private practice owners did it all on their own Why private practice isn’t something to rush into How learning and adjusting is part of the process—not a failure Why private practice is meant to feel like freedom, not judgment If this mindset has been quietly holding you back, support can help you slow the process down, make decisions in the right order, and stop feeling like you have to recreate the wheel. Ready for next steps? If you want focused clarity, you can book a 90-minute strategy call. If you’re looking for ongoing guidance, 1:1 coaching is available. You don’t need to know everything. What services should you offer in private practice—and what can you leave out? In this episode, I break down how to decide your service offerings intentionally, whether you’re building an insurance-based or cash-pay practice. You don’t have to offer everything you were trained to do, and starting focused doesn’t limit your future—it protects it. We cover why clarity matters, how to avoid recreating burnout, and how your services shape your schedule, systems, and sustainability. Defining your services is a foundational part of building a practice that actually works.   📌 Resources: Wondering if Private Practice is right for you? Take the Private Practice Readiness Quiz! Admin time is one of the most misunderstood parts of running a private practice. In this episode, I walk through what admin time is actually for — and why it shouldn’t be used to catch up on notes, inbox messages, or other unpaid clinical work. This is the same framework I use with my 1:1 coaching clients when we’re building out their clinic schedules. We’re not just deciding how many patients they’ll see — we’re deciding how they’ll lead their practice. I share how I intentionally create and protect admin time, how I structure my own admin day, and what should happen during that time to keep a practice running proactively instead of reactively. If your practice feels heavy, chaotic, or constantly behind, this episode will help you rethink how admin time fits into your schedule. If you’re interested in working with me one-on-one as you build or refine your private practice, I'd love to work with you! Admin time isn’t a luxury. Physicians are trained to look for red flags — and that skill saves lives. But when it comes to career decisions, that same instinct can quietly keep you stuck. In this short mindset shift, we talk about how fear can disguise itself as logic, why collecting worst-case scenarios doesn’t equal responsibility, and how changing the question you’re asking can open the door to clarity instead of paralysis. We spend so much time planning the dream that when it finally happens, we rush right past it. In this episode, I share a moment from a recent ribbon cutting for one of my 1:1 coaching clients—and a realization that stopped me in my tracks. As physicians, we’re wired to plan, execute, and move on to the next thing… but skipping the celebration comes at a cost. You’ll hear: Why big milestones often feel quieter than we expect The emotional weight of building something from nothing Practical ways to pause, reflect, and actually feel your progress How honoring the moment can make the journey more sustainable If you’re planning a private practice—or already in the middle of building one—this episode is a reminder not to rush past the moments you once prayed for. ✨ Interested in 1:1 coaching? Many physicians believe that being a good doctor and being a good business owner are opposites. In this short mindset shift, we unpack where that belief comes from — and why it’s often the most thoughtful, patient-centered doctors who struggle with it the most.
